In a series of network interviews, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin declared that she’s “not a quitter,” but “a fighter” and that attacks from her critics are “bull crap.” Palin said that she announced her resignation “because of the tremendous pressure, time and financial burden of a litany of ethics complaints in the past several months,” which she said “were without merit and took away from the job she wanted to do for Alaskans.”

“[L]eaders of the South Carolina Republican Party voted to censure Gov. Mark Sanford, reprimanding him for secretly leaving the state to visit his lover in Argentina. … Twenty-two committee members voted for a reprimand, 10 called for his resignation, while nine voted to support the governor.” The vote has no practical effect on whether or not Sanford stays in office.

Laura Tyson, an economic adviser to President Obama, said the U.S. should consider drafting a second stimulus package focusing on infrastructure projects because the $787 billion approved in February was “a bit too small.” A Rasmussen poll indicates that 60 percent of the public is against a second stimulus.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his top deputies have not formally asked the U.S. for permission to engage in military strikes on
Iran’s nuclear program
, “fearing the White House would not approve, two Israeli officials said.”

New rules released by the federal government yesterday “permit federal funding for research using many of the approximately 700 embryonic stem cell lines that are believed to be in existence.” House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) said the new rules “create incentives for the destruction of human life.” He also managed to link the release of the new rules to abortion, saying, “Health care reform should not be a vehicle to advance controversial pro-abortion policies.”

Labor unions and other progressive organizations are taking aim at the” U.S. Chamber of Commerce. While the SEIU is going after the Chamber’s “history of opposing legislation aimed at helping the working class,” a new umbrella group called Americans for Financial Reform plans to “spend about $5 million to counter the lobbying of the big banks, the Chamber and other groups seeking to water down” reform.

President Obama and Russian President Dmitri Medvedev signed an agreement yesterday committing to “cut American and Russian strategic nuclear arsenals by at least one-quarter, a first step in a broader effort intended to reduce the threat of such weapons drastically and to prevent their further spread to unstable regions.”

Binyam Mohamed, a former Guantanamo Bay inmate who has since been released to Britain, “has asked a federal court in Washington to preserve ‘photographic evidence’ that he says shows him being ’savagely beaten’ while a detainee.” According to Mohamed, guards “grabbed my testicles and punched me” and “slammed me and my Koran into the fence.”

At 12:01 a.m. today, under a law approved in May,” Washington D.C. began recognizing the marriages of same-sex couples performed in other jurisdictions.

And finally: Kal Penn goes to a new white castle. The actor, who appeared in the movie “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle” and the TV show “House,” had his “first day as an associate director in the White House’s Office of Public Engagement” yesterday. “I expect to be treated just like any other staff member,” he said on a conference call with reporters, also noting that he will be using his full name, Kalpen Modi, while working for the administration.

“Labor unions and other progressive organizations are taking aim at the” U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

    It’s about time.
Chamber of Commerce efforts, from broad tax cuts to anti-EFCA messages are anti-union, anti-social and, at times, anti-American.

For months I’ve heard about the EFCA ‘taking away the secret ballot’. That’s completely false. When an organization pays millions to support lies, it’s time they were called out.

Sarah Palin declared that she’s “not a quitter,” but “a fighter”

To quote the velvet-tongued Palin, “bull crap”.

…she announced her resignation “because of the tremendous pressure, time and financial burden of a litany of ethics complaints in the past several months,” which she said “were without merit and took away from the job she wanted to do for Alaskans.”

It’s a good thing for our nation President Clinton didn’t take the same approach Palin did.

It would, however, have been appropriate if Bush faced, then or now, a litany of charges, criminal and otherwise.

    PEACE

So Sanford gets a slap on the wrist by fellow GOPers. Would they be so generous if Sanford were a Democrat?

  5. unbelievable says:

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) said the new rules “create incentives for the destruction of human life.”

Too bad he doesn’t consider that when he votes for wars, against public health care…

  6. RUCeriousMaggot! says:

John Boehner (R-OH) said the new rules “create incentives for the destruction of human life.” He also managed to link the release of the new rules to abortion, saying, “Health care reform should be a vehicle to advance policies that would effectively overturn Roe V. Wade.”

There, Boner, fixed it to say exactly what you meant.

  7. unbelievable says:

Name one elected position you haven’t quit. You’ve quit every post to which you’ve ever been elected or nominated. That should have been obvious from the fact that you attended a different college every year for 6 years to get a 4 year Journalism Degree… Please just shut up now and go away…

  8. Zimzone says:

And while Boner is lying about the small impact of stimulus funds occurring in Ohio, President Obama just reached agreement with Russia on reducing our insane level of nuclear warheads.

Billdo is having a hissy fit about Franken being seated as a Senator today. (Yay!)

Palin continues to lie about the truth with her Governership.

    Beck is still crazy.

You can always tell a Conservative. But you can’t tell them much.

Might wanna start listening to Krugman more often. He told you guys this from the beginning… And while, you’re at it, listen o him about health care reform, and ignore the Republicans.

  10. Bobwurst says:

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) said the new rules “create incentives for the destruction of human life.”

More republican lies. Boner, here’s a hint, an embryo isn’t any more of a human than an omelet is a chicken. When boner talks like this he creates incentives for the destruction of human life however, the murder of abortion providers like Dr. Tiller. How many women will die because they couldn’t get a late term abortion to save their lives?

More rumors today that the Dems are caving even moreson on health care (public option) — this, after we heard yesterday that they are also considering banning all abortions in the health care plan.
What more can we do? We call, email, fax our opinions; polls reflect what Americans want, Democrats are in the majority, but the repugs and their friends, the DINOs are giving everything away.

Definitely a step in the right direction. Employee benefits will be extended to same-sex spouses if the employee works for a private company or for the District government. But, unfortunately, not if the employee works for the federal government. And, of course, no same-sex married couple may file a joint federal income tax return.

We still have quite a way to go.

Oh I note that when other Republicans, like say Scooter Libby or Tom Delay were facing legal action, THEY had no problem raising money for their legal defense expenses, but Palin? Apparently not so much. Guess she isn’t actually as popular as she imagines.

    From AP:

“I said before … ‘You know, politically speaking, if I die, I die. So be it,’” she said.

OMG, you just can’t make this stuff up!

There’s a post on Crook & Liars about the partners of gay servicemen and women who because of DADT, can’t risk greeting them openly when they come back from their tours, can’t risk getting involved with the official veterans post-combat support servides et cetera. Sad and outrageous and stupid, it is.

  30. Pennsylvanianne says:

Her statement just goes to show how absolutely absurd and ridiculous her reasoning is. She quits, then says she’s not a quitter. WHAT?! How does she expect the American public to 1.) Believe anything she says and 2.) Trust her with elected office ever again? She has committed political suicide and she knows it. She could have looked to Bill Clinton as an example of a public official who carried out the duties of his office while under investigation, but then, Clinton was a Rhodes scholar who can speak in complete sentences off the cuff and not make any grammatical mistakes. Sarah wasn’t, or couldn’t do any of those things. Buh-bye, Sarah. Guess she wasn’t much of a barracuda after all!

    Washington Post

MOSCOW, July 6 — President Obama told Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Monday that Russia needs more “consistent” protection of property rights to attract investment and a free press, independent courts and political opposition to fight corruption.
But he did so by endorsing Medvedev’s public positions and without lecturing or raising the politically sensitive case of the jailed oil tycoon and Kremlin foe Mikhail
Khodorkovsky, said Michael A. McFaul, the top Russia aide at the National Security Council.

On Morning Joe he an Mika were praising Palin all day while constantly saying how Russia didn’t like President Obama and wasn’t impressed with him at all. People didn’t come to hear him speak and Putin’s body language showed how much he disrespected him. When two experts (Republicans I believe) came on and brought up this story as the reason Putin was giving him the cold shoulder they were quickly ignored and dismissed.

  39. Bobwurst says:

Yeah doodlebug, I saw that too, those guys won’t be back, they didn’t nod and agree with joe. And mika drives me crazy. the fawning over that bully joe and her mugging for the camera is insulting to adults everywhere. she complains about how brutal the press was to poor sarah, like obama didn’t get hammered everyday. how many times did we see rev. wright say “god damn america”? how many times did we here how “regular guys” would never vote for him? how many times did we see that clip of him bowling? how many times was sarah shown calling him a terrorist without being called on it? Yeah, poor sarah really got picked on.

If service members would pick a day where all that are gay and the supporters of repealing DADT would stand up and say “I’m gay kick me out” what would happen? If they never have to pay for their prejudice and stupidity even if they repeal it their attitude won’t change. They need to be kicked where it hurts.

obama blew it on the stimulus package. Without proof, I’m saying that he deliberately made it about 1/2 as much as it should have been just to get repugs (3, and one later switched to dim for election purpose) to back him. biden tried the old “we were all wrong” by saying that we ALL misjudged how bad the economic crisis was and didn’t do enough. The admin deliberately ignored krugman, et.al., about what the size of the stimulus should have been. They had one chance at the “shock therapy”; there won’t be a second chance, so our economy will bump along for some years while the banks and other major corps continue to rob us (see “health care”).

“Apparently, Roark demands that an economist predict future economic performance with 100% accuracy before he takes them seriously.”

No, not 100% accuracy. However, 1.6% difference in unemployment is much larger than it looks. If he wasn’t exactly sure about how it would work out then don’t use the scare tactics on us. He was using fearmongering to convince all the simpletons that it was absolutely necessary.

And dozens of top economists were warning that the stimulus package enacted was too small to be effective. Yet it appeared to be as large as was politically achievable, thanks to predictably obstructionist Republican opposition.

So a presidential advisor offered a best-case scenario despite warnings, and you’re willing to dismiss the advisor’s authority when the best case didn’t materialize.

By the way, since you’re insisting that economic advisors be “exactly sure about how it would work out” before issuing forecasts, then you might want to note that LAURA TYSON is a “she”, not a “he”.

18% have become more liberal and 42% haven’t changed. That’s 60% who haven’t become more conservative. And young people don’t take polls. But you keep believing it by all means and rund Sarah for president. It’s all good.

So a presidential advisor offered a best-case scenario despite warnings, and you’re willing to dismiss the advisor’s authority when the best case didn’t materialize.”

A few things here. First off, Obama and the democratic controlled congress was able to do whatever they pleased to get whatever they wanted passed. To attempt to pass the buck onto republicans is ignorant at best.

Also, that graph that the administration put forth was NOT a best case scenario. They didn’t state it as one and only now are we hearing the claims that it was (damage control).

All of that being said, this is still a failure on the part of the Obama administration and congress. Let’s, for arguments sake, pretend that the stimulus package wasn’t large enough and everyone knew it. Then what was the point of passing the one they did?! If it truly wasn’t large enough then why not just increase the size, you had the votes you needed.

As a small business owner all I know is that my business started booming last month and hasn’t let down since.

  69. Roark says:

“And your complaining about the results we’re getting from President Obama. Unemployment is a lagging indicator.”

You are missing the whole point. Obama and his administration pushed the stimulus package by claiming that unemployment would top out at 7.9%. Those are not my estimates, those are his! If nothing else, the administration severely hurt it’s credibility as far as economic forecasting goes.

Shayne, you know what they say about assuming….

I didn’t vote for McCain, I can’t stand McCain, he is a dialed down Obama. An interventionist at heart.

This woman has quit every job she has taken. She quit the city council to run for mayor. She quit the mayor’s office to take the job as head of the oil and gas commission. She quit that to run for governor. She stopped being governor to run for VP. And when she came back from losing, she ran out of interest in the job. And now she has quit being governor.

The fact that none of the objective, free press ever calls her on this BS of hers, says almost as much about the quality of reporting, as the lies of this woman. She is always the victim. She juices up rhetoric, and lies and then instead of letting it go, she claims victim hood. She drags her family into her politics then is horrified when they are fair game.

What she wants is freedom from the press. Freedom to use the press and then when it becomes too uncomfortable, to make them go away. When they ask questions, which they rarely do, then she doesn’t like it. She wants it both ways. She wants what she wants, but only when she wants it. She embraces the trivial because this is all she understands. She constantly latches on to the minutia and has no concept of the bigger picture.

The fact is, this woman knows very little about much of anything. And she resents having that pointed out to her. She wants to be known and a force, but she doesn’t want to do the heavy lifting to get there. She wants to be embraced and respected but not if she has to do the grunt work.

She continually skirts the legality of ethics violations. Then when the BI-PARTISAN members of the legislature in Alaska call her on it, she is again the victim. Not once does she ask herself why she continues to risk legal ramifications regarding her administration.

Unfortunately she is with us, for the foreseeable future. And unless she finally has to account for anything. I am sick to death of her and her party.

President Barack Obama issued a clarifying statement about the administration’s commitment to a “public option” for health insurance while traveling in Russia on Tuesday.

“I am pleased by the progress we’re making on health care reform and still believe, as I’ve said before, that one of the best ways to bring down costs, provide more choices, and assure quality is a public option that will force the insurance companies to compete and keep them honest,” read the statement. “I look forward to a final product that achieves these very important goals.”

Oh, so because it took me a while to become bored enough to find an insignificant blog to comment on that means that I’m a liar?

OK, prove any of the things you’ve said, regarding your past criticism of Bush. What? You can’t prove you’re nothing but a sour-grapes critic of Obama? I already knew that.

Good job on changing the subject from an argument with substance (and one that you couldn’t win) to a meaningless argument over who I personally voted for and when I stated it.

If you hadn’t tried to establish your “cred,” by mentioning your past, it wouldn’t be an issue:

Far from it, I have frequently stated how much I despied Bush and his policies.

You’re a sour-grapes republican, who thinks he still retains a modicum of credibility after giving his support to the largest increase in government in American history. News flash: you don’t.

Obama and his administration pushed the stimulus package by claiming that unemployment would top out at 7.9%.

Is this your supposed argument? Obama claimed the rate would likely climb much higher before the end of the recession.

  81. Roark says:

    barfly-

Your entire argument against me is based on empty assumptions and conjecture. Neither of which are good tools in an argument. Look back over the discussion and see that it was doodlebug shayne that brought up my political affiliations, not me.

Have there been republicans that I have voted for in the past? Absolutely, but that hardly makes me a card carrying republican. Can I prove that I was no fan of Bush during his time in office? Sadly no, I didn’t tape all of my conversations. Conversely, you cannot prove that I did support him. So congratulations, you’ve made an a** out of yourself by making assumptions.

“Is this your supposed argument? Obama claimed the rate would likely climb much higher before the end of the recession.”

He only claimed the rate would go higher after the fact, of course, just to save face since he had little idea whether or not his predictions were correct.

Obama’s bonanza for private equity underwriters (PEU’s) includes selling bad banks and a possible second stimulus plan for infrastructure. PEU’s have trillions to invest in both areas.

SEIU President Andy Stern said employer sponsored health insurance is “dead and not coming back.”

He might need to spend of that money “on behalf of the working class” opposing himself.

What happens when the President of a health care worker union is the first to cave? He did so years ago.

If Andy is going to attack the Chamber of Commerce, he should include its neighbor, The White House. Obama, Emanuel, Orzag & Summers use Chamber of Commerce lingo for health reform.

  84. stateofthedivision says:

Labor unions targeting Chamber of Commerce and promoting the Blue version of K Street. Brunswick Group’s Business Forward got major play in the Politico piece:

Yet another new group, Business Forward, has organized to create a new, more amiable bridge between the White House and corporate world.

Business Forward differs from the Chamber in that it doesn’t lobby on issues but acts a conduit for the exchange of ideas and information between the administration and boardrooms.

Still, David Sutphen, a Business Forward board member, said his group “is an example amid a series of things that are happening that reflect a lot of people’s perspective that there isn’t one voice for the business community.”

TP missed blue influence peddling, again.
