In the first Senate hearing today on clean energy legislation supported by President Barack Obama, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) compared the Senate to the “ExxonMobil board room.” Whitehouse expressed his concern that the United States would be left behind in the clean energy race, saying, “I do not want to see American industries at the back of that parade with a broom.” Addressing the Obama Cabinet members before him — Ken Salazar, Stephen Chu, Tom Vilsack, and Lisa Jackson — Whitehouse apologized for the denial of man-made climate change by his fellow senators:
We know that this is probably — along with the ExxonMobil board room — the last place that sober people debate whether or not these problems are real, but we intend to work with you anyway, and we hope to give you strong legislative support if we can.
Watch it:
ExxonMobil, the world’s largest company, is still directing money to climate-denial front groups, and has spent more than $9.3 million lobbying Congress this year alone. Sen. Whitehouse has previously noted the insidious influence of polluter spending on the Senate’s willingness to take the threat of climate change seriously.
We have become a lazy, stupid nation in decline. Our people are addicted to junk food, junk religion, junk ideology and junk culture.
In the very near future, access to health care will be exclusively the prerogative of the wealthy. The millions upon millions of underemployed or nonemployed folks of this nation will be seen as just so much breathing junk to the wealthy overlords.
Is it too late for us to change?
July 7th, 2009 at 1:48 pmMoney doesn’t make this type of problem disappear , Senators……
July 7th, 2009 at 1:50 pmprolly.
July 7th, 2009 at 1:50 pmWe remember the results of the Titanic as many were warned the ship was sinking. Now we see the same with the GOP who are willing to lie for money then to help save millions. Greed runs deep in the US and voters should take note. Many Law Makers are doing what Mark Sanford did as they are missing with the love of the money their getting to vote against saving the World.

July 7th, 2009 at 1:59 pm“Sen.” ahead of Whitehouse in these headlines?
Good point, Katy. At first glance, the use of “Whitehouse” is a bit confusing.

Thank you, Senator Whitehouse.

Reguardless if global warming is a real issue or not, you can’t seriously think that chopping down all those trees and melting the glaciers along with tons of factory’s spewing tons of crap into the atmosphere isn’t an issue. Will cap & trade pass and make a difference? Idk personally but anything that helps change the way we operate is a step in the right direction. It’s sad to think of what condition we leave things now for our children to worry about later down the road. The last thing we need is more crap that things going on isn’t man-made.

July 7th, 2009 at 2:05 pmWell said, Sen. Whitehouse.
It’s a shame that your Republican peers insist on lying to children and stupid people on this issue.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:05 pmHi, Proud.
Last time I checked, there wasn’t a 24-second clock in politics.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:05 pmYoung republican, you can quit kissing proud’s ass, he’s not going to go to the prom with you.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:09 pmNothing done? Well. In addition to the end of offensive patrols in Iraq, the new cooperation of the Pakistani Army, and a moderation of the economic free fall, there’s this:
* January 29, 2009: Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, Pub.L. 111-2

“Proud” is either a total retard or a performance troll.
GW Bush is the worst president that I can remember. There is nothing to be proud of concerning that man’s disastrous regime.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:10 pmWhy isn’t Young Repiggie serving in the military in Afghanistan right now?
Why did he sit out the Iraq conflict?
Why does he refuse to fight in the wars that he considers so necessary to our nation’s survival?

Stop the constant whining, you have control of both houses and the Whitehouse. Why don’t the three stooges (Obama, Nancy Pe-loser, Dingy Harry) do something. The Dumbocrat party no longer has any excuses. You can keep blaming Pres Bush all you want but the people are waking up and are tired of hearing the constant blame game. The clock is ticking.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
2 wars , a screwed up economy , New Orleans still not rebuilt , cost of health care skyrocketing , our schools/education system badly in need of an over-haul , and all because of a moronic imbecile’s incompetence and uselessness , and you’re trying to place a “shot clock” on this president and his political party ?
Pipe down you little shitstick …………
July 7th, 2009 at 2:14 pmWhitehouse: Climate deniers are taken seriously only at ExxonMobil and in the Senate.

July 7th, 2009 at 2:16 pmwrong mcmetal,
well if you include evisceration of the 4th amendment, sweeping windfall profits towards conflicted interest corporations, tanking america’s image abroad, executive power grabs, corruption and scandal, that kind of stuff, you could write books on what bush accomplished.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:21 pmBush/Cheney is an international laughingstock and our national disgrace.
What’s there to be proud of, given the massive criminality and ineptitude of those two crooks and their assorted hangers-on?
July 7th, 2009 at 2:22 pmHey Prod, where do you see anybody blaming Bush for anything in this story?
July 7th, 2009 at 2:23 pmHe forgot to mention talk radio.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:23 pmFunny, despite the troll’s usual projections, I don’t hear any whining from Senator Whitehouse. He simply stressed the fact that Regressives in the Senate are owned by the oil companies. He, like most thinking adults, sounds dismayed by a political party that cares more about protecting big business then it does about the future of the planet and the state they leave it in for future generations. Unlike the gleefully mis-informed Rightie voters who fall for every lie that they are told to believe by their political reps, FOX News and rightard radio, the Senators actually know better but with a wink to their oily owners will deny the impact of global climate change because it lines their pockets.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:24 pmRHF.
I don’t post facts for the trolls. I recognize the futility of such endeavors. I just like to debunk falsehoods in case anyone with a brain gets confused.

July 7th, 2009 at 2:26 pmDoodlebug, point taken…

Increased fuel efficiency will increase the cost of vehicles.
Credit derivative options are safe investments.
Wall St. only wants what’s good for you.
Additional nuclear weapons will make us all more safe.

These lies & many more, brought to you by Madison Avenue to whoever is stupid enough to pay our exorbitant fees.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:29 pmYeah evengenital we have to remember that below average IQs are required to be a Republican otherwise they cast you out as an elitist. And we have evidence with our two dumba$$ troll.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:30 pmWhitehouse saying, “I do not want to see American industries at the back of that parade with a broom.”

July 7th, 2009 at 2:59 pmI’m afraid you might be right on that one. The European Union appears to be at least 5 years ahead of us. Even China is beginning to take action on their climate problems.
Nothing will happen here until the Greedheads in Industry and the Senate suffer a calamitous loss to climate change events. Like seeing their seaside vacation homes swept away in a huuricane. Then they’ll scream long and loud about why nothing was done to protect them while ignoring the larger and more devastating impacts on the population at large.

July 7th, 2009 at 3:11 pmSorry this might be a little O/T but I saw This a few days ago and it still boggles my mind. Glenn beck was putting down New Jersey for handing out energy saving light bulbs. The recipients were told if every American household used these bulbs then it would be like taking 800,000 cars off the road.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:16 pmSo what does beck say. NOOOO we should be putting 800,000 cars on the road with people in them driving to work. I find it hard to believe that he is that stupid to miss the point.
He just spun the sht out of it for his and foxnoises agenda.
He also knows that his viewers are to damn stupid to see through his blatant lies and misconceptions.
Thankyou fellow TP`ers and TP for letting me vent.
This is just one of a few stories that demonstrate the need for stronger lobbying and campaign laws.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:19 pmJust when did the Capital turn into a giant thermos?
Whenever it happened, we either need to break the vacuum around it or screw the lid on real tight.

As long as Republicans still exist, failure will still exist. Republicans are pure failure personified.

you’re welcome. to take your o/t a step further. wouldn’t a big government order for efficient light bulbs at least temporarily put some people in their cars to go make and ship lightbulbs and packaging? (yeah, i know in their cars, but still) those are jobs right?
i don’t even know what some of these knuckleheaded fnc placeholders are even argueing for anymore. I haven’t turned on fox since the football season, but I can tell who watches based only on their language.
July 7th, 2009 at 5:52 pmThe current push for so-called “cap and trade” is NOT based upon science! The science simply does not support the theory that CO2 is driving global average temperatures.
Let’s examine why. From about the end of WWII until 1975, global temperatures declined. From about 1975 until 1998, temperatures were on the rise. From 1998 until now, however, global temperatures have stopped rising and are actually in the beginning stage of a DECLINE. Folks, you just can’t argue with the evidence!
There is a lot of other evidence as well that clearly has put the lie to the “global warming” theory that has been peddled as “settled science” by environmentalists and certain politicians who have their own agenda.
The President keeps reiterating that his administration is making a break from the past in that his initiatives are going to be based upon SCIENCE! Well then, why is it that he is pushing so hard for “cap and trade” when science doesn’t support it?
There are several schools of thought on this: economic and political. One is that there are a number of prominent Democrats and others who are heavily invested in the upcoming carbon trading scheme that will require “cap and trade” to be a reality. These folks stand to make hundreds of millions of dollars at OUR EXPENSE. The second is power; specifically the iron-fisted power the government can wield to control every aspect of our lives. We all know the left is all about power and will use any opportunity to increase their hold on it and consolidate the mechanisms of control into law.
The bottom line is this legislation will do NOTHING to reduce global temperatures and will actually produce a large amount of economic PAIN for no GAIN. People who say the effect of this legislation on the economy will be small are either LYING or they are not presenting a full and complete picture of the severe ramifications a lot of clear-thinking people are raising the alarm about!
There is the very likely scenario that this legislation will destroy millions more jobs than it creates and increase the cost of EVERYTHING in our economy to a much higher level than the proponents would like you to believe!
It’s amazing to me that so many people in this country are willing to swallow this “cap and trade” nonsense hook, line and sinker! Many people seem to think that our President and members of Congress are smarter than the rest of us, so we should just shut up and let this thing go through.
Well folks, I’m not one of them!
