In response to a question about how long U.S. troops are expected to stay in Afghanistan, Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen said today that his “expectation is that we will have a long-term relationship with Afghanistan.” He emphasized that the “best number” he can offer right now is that we need to “turn the tide” against the Taliban in the next 12-18 months. Watch it:
Later in the press conference, Mullen said leaders in the region are “very wary” that the U.S. won’t make a long-term commitment to them. He explained that when he travels in Afghanistan and Pakistan, “the question that comes up either directly or indirectly is — are you staying this time or are you leaving?”

“Honey! Come on! You know I have to travel around the world, a lot. There’s no need to get jealous about it. Don’t you trust me? What? No, no, Honduras means nothing to me, really!”
July 8th, 2009 at 8:06 pmBREAKING: Leon Panetta of the CIA has admitted that the CIA under George Bush did deceive Congress about torture. Say wha? Nancy Pelosi was telling the truth and I believed her when she was? You betcha!
July 8th, 2009 at 8:09 pmDo the military wives know about this?
July 8th, 2009 at 8:10 pmAt least President Obama is getting our troops out of Iraq. Boy, bush sure did leave him quite a mess. I hope that nobody blames the greatest president this country ever had on leftovers from the worst president this country ever had.
July 8th, 2009 at 8:13 pmI don’t think Obama will keep us there forever but I am glad he’s taken our military to the real fight in Afghanistan.
July 8th, 2009 at 8:13 pm<<<<>>>>
Better believe it.
July 8th, 2009 at 8:14 pmI was referring to: “Boy, bush sure did leave him quite a mess.”
July 8th, 2009 at 8:15 pmI am not saying I condone this, but if one of last few things you country still manufactures is weapons, and the rest of your economy sucks, and you are not willing to make the changes necessary to actually fix Walstreet, what might you do to put a bandaid on a hemorrhage?
July 8th, 2009 at 8:20 pmWhat did the people of Afganistan do to the people of the United States of America? Why are we murdering Afgan women and children?
Bring our troops home and let them exterminate right wing extremists and right wing terrorists.
July 8th, 2009 at 8:24 pmGiven how many Afghani soldiers actually deployed in the new “surge” I’d be inclined to advise general Mullen that; “They just aren’t that into us”.
July 8th, 2009 at 8:24 pmWho said long-term relationships weren’t deadly?
PEACE
July 8th, 2009 at 8:41 pmAfghanistan is a lost cause. We should leave before more troops die. War is not the solution, we should negotiate with the Taliban.
July 8th, 2009 at 8:44 pmI hope it doesn’t take 12-18 months to get out of Afghanistan!
Good luck to our troops!
Everytime I see any members of the Bush Crime Family I want to slap their faces! Especially Rove – smug bas~turd!
July 8th, 2009 at 8:48 pmhormiga brava chavez,
July 8th, 2009 at 8:53 pmI blame Obama as well. He wants to keep fighting in Afghanistan, which is a lost cause. Obama is a war criminal.
Peace now!
“Mullen says U.S. troops will have ‘long-term relationship with Afghanistan.’”
This is something the US can’t afford, unlike the stimulus.
July 8th, 2009 at 8:54 pmSharky pffffft
July 8th, 2009 at 8:59 pmthe American military is like getting an STD……you never get rid of it.
July 8th, 2009 at 8:59 pmLooks like the young rethug still has a chance to sign up.
July 8th, 2009 at 9:11 pmtony and lido
Young repiggies have avoided Iraq and Afghanistan like the plague, even though they can’t get enough of these stupid wars, albeit from the safety of this nation.
Many of them now are agitating for a war with Iran, a war in which they naturally will refuse to fight.
July 8th, 2009 at 9:13 pmthe question that comes up either directly or indirectly is — are you staying this time or are you leaving?”
Be careful what you wish for people…Ask Honduras about our the value of our assistance…
And Timmy Vacuous can kiss my ass. Real Americans have had their lives irreparably damaged by his boy bush and Timmy can come here and crack jokes about it. What a crummy excuse for an human being.
July 8th, 2009 at 9:26 pmHey TIM the ghost spoofer,
Get a life. There’s only one Tim VACULIK, d(ickhead
July 8th, 2009 at 10:17 pmMullen says U.S. troops will have ‘long-term relationship with Afghanistan
I don’t care what he thinks that means…
July 8th, 2009 at 10:23 pmbut what i want to know is,
What has that got to do with the price of human lives? Mullen? what’s that gor to do with the price of human lives taken violently by other human lives that also get screwed in the process.
Why does Tim Vaculik wade in Republican shit?
July 8th, 2009 at 10:25 pmApe-Man,
WTF? Who pulled your chain numb-nuts?
July 8th, 2009 at 10:27 pmHe emphasized that the “best number” he can offer right now is that we need to “turn the tide” against the Taliban in the next 12-18 months.
*****
July 8th, 2009 at 10:30 pmGeez, why can’t they just get out of the way of the oil pipe already?!
Sorry, i had you confused with someone who comes here to defend and appologise for the Republicans.
July 8th, 2009 at 10:45 pmAh, the imperial USofA can always find new excuses for killing residents of third world countries, torturing them, blindfolding them, imprisoning them, torturing them, killing them and stealing their natural resources.
The imperial USofA has been pulling this crap in third-world countries, off and on, for over a century. Since 1898, over five million residents of third world countries have been served into early graves by the US military and our CIA.
It is time for President Obama to halt US imperial aggression in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan.
July 8th, 2009 at 10:49 pmWhat’s the use? If chimpy wasn’t interested in bin Laden’s whereabouts why should we now? It couldn’t have been important or the repugs would had said so, at the very least they would had throw the madman out.
That’s one of chimpy’s legacy. The jackass decimated another country under the wicked disguised of his revenge god.
Who’s worried about Rev. Wright? HAHAHAHAHA
The shell or the Three Card Monty games are fruitless. Chasing only Muslims are racist and disturbing because people like vonxxxx are overlooked. We can’t afford to chase every nutbag on earth.
We should get the nutbag(s) without invasion and occupation.
But this whole “terrorist” thing is bs, ’cause oil is the motivator and war is the outcome for these I-don’t-want-to-count-casualties-from-the-other-side murderers.
Wanton wars are wrong.
July 8th, 2009 at 11:03 pmtimmeth, generals don’t say how long a war must go on (stop thinking chimpy’s way) generals are made for war. President Obama will state that fact, as he has voiced before several times.
Mullen is out of order.
July 8th, 2009 at 11:37 pmamerican is an imperialist country
obama is going down the same road as johnson
it is starting to look like someone else is running the country besides obama or congress
only when we are completely bankrupt and countries quit loaning us money to stay afloat will our imperialism end.
or the dollar no longer is the world currency.
ike warned us about our future but no one listened in 1961
July 9th, 2009 at 1:04 amresearcher Says:
it is starting to look like someone else is running the country besides obama or congress
Yea, it’s called the Pentagon, they’ve been at it for a while now. The question now is how many more Friedman Units will they give themselves in Afghanistan after they’ve used up the 2 or 3 that they just gave themselves.
July 9th, 2009 at 4:49 amReally,….lets see how long the US stays in any war after the dollar collapses.
It’s coming…are you prepared???? But more importantly is the US government prepare….with a 185,000 ordered caskets on both coasts…there preparing for something!!!!!
