O’Reilly Tells African-Americans Whom They Can And Cannot Hold Up As Icons

Fox News host Bill O’Reilly was full of his usual hypocrisy as he went off last night about the death of Michael Jackson. O’Reilly started off on a respectful note, saying, “The family of Michael Jackson honored his memory today in Los Angeles. And I do not, do not wish to intrude on that. They are entitled to grieve any way they want.” However, he then decided to intrude, saying that he was “just about fed up with all the adulation” because it’s “basically grandstanding and pathetic in the extreme.”

O’Reilly was also offended at the “racial component” to the Jackson coverage. “The message is very clear, if you criticize Michael Jackson, you hate black people,” said O’Reilly. He, however, then injected race into the discussion by telling Fox News analyst Marc Lamont Hill that blacks shouldn’t look up to Jackson:

O’REILLY: Okay, then why is he being held up by the African-American community as a pillar of black America when he blanches his skin? [...]

But answer me this, if he is such a black American icon, why did he have his kids with white men?

HILL: That’s a personal matter. That doesn’t make him less black. There’s no blackness meter here. You don’t become less black when you have a white kid.

O’REILLY: You don’t become an African-American icon when you do something like that.

HILL: No, you become an African-American icon for producing the greatest music and being the greatest entertainer ever for being extraordinary humanitarian and for.

O’REILLY: No. You just become an American icon for that, not a black American icon. [...]

HILL: It’s not — oh, he is an American idol — icon. He is quintessentially American, but he’s also undeniably black. You can’t take black from him just because he has white kids.

Watch it:

That’s right — O’Reilly, who has said he is “terrified” about interacting with African-Americans and is amazed that a restaurant “run by blacks” is like “any other restaurant in New York City,” is now dictating whom people of color should hold up as icons.

O/T: to Stephanie of the Stephanie Miller radio talk show

    Dear Stephanie,

I turned in your radio show on “green” 960 in SF this AM and I was disgusted to hear that you thought that it was a good thing that the Russians are allowing US war material to be flown over their territory. Our imperial occupation of Afghanistan is wrong; it is criminal. We were never attacked by the Afghan people; we were attacked by 15 Saudi dupes and Cheney, Rumsfeld and Bush. Please note that the USofA, under Reagan with the help of the CIA created the forerunners of the Taliban to harass the government of Afghanistan, which was showing signs of doing something for the average man back in the early 1980s. Heaven forbid. The USoA, imperialist in the 3rd world since 1898, started with the slaughter of some 200,000 Filipinos who had the gall to resist American colonial occupation of their country back in 1899. Charming to hear that a so-called “progressive” is on board with USofA imperialism in Afghanistan, along with war criminals Cheney, Bush and Obama. Heck of job, Stephanie.

    Yours truly,

    James K. Sayre

I do not want O’Reilly to get cancer. Such a fate is far to gentle. I believe in karma or karmic destiny.

Karma has handed O’Reilly a defeat so huge, it’s tearing him apart inside. He knows he is partly to blame and that knowledge is so painful to him, his mind is probably teetering on the edge of sanity.

O’Reilly is getting exactly what he deserves. If he lost his money or his job, his punishment would be reduced. He is living in his own personal hell right now.

I am counting my blessings that I am neither famous nor an icon for anyone. I think the saddest part of Michael Jackson’s death is the exploitation of it from both his fans and his foes.

Tickets sold for a funeral? Crass. I don’t know if the tickets were originally sold, or if they were merely “issued” to the first 16,000 fans who wanted them (as a way to limit the crowd) and scalped for thousands of dollars by greedheads later. Either way, it’s vulgar.

The make-a-buck-off-death crowd will be pushing Jackson’s recordings, and they have probably already gotten white sequined gloves and t-shirts in the marketplace. I figure I will be seeing endless ads for commemorative plates and other junky knick-knacks any day now.

And even Bill O’Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, and others are using the Jackson death to further their own hateful agenda.

Yup — I’m glad I’m not famous. When I die, only my friends and family will pay attention. And I can rest in peace.

I don’t know if I’ve ever disagreed with you before, missmolly, but in the little bit of glimpses I caught of the service, I thought it was a remarkably appropriate way to honor the man and his impact on the world.

He was an entertainer, and very likely was happiest when he was on stage performing. More than that, his impact on so many other entertainers was celebrated through the event. For all of his bizarre life choices, he was truly loved by a lot of close friends and family, and by millions of fans, and the service gave them a chance to express that love.

I didn’t see it as a “funeral”. I saw it more as a tribute.

Fox is the only website that I have bookmarked under my politics favorites folder, all other news sites go under NEWS.

These comments by Billy are indicative of the repeated targeting and missed cues on minorities in America and they know it.

Fox’s faithful audience is reflective of the vitrol angry commenters at Fox Nation. My guess, very GOP and very white. I sense they would look just as the GOP national convention floor looks each 4 years; white and vapid.

Fox Nation Statement of Purpose and the type of hate they feed are indicative of a polarizing audience that doesn’t fall into America’s diverse demographics.

Fox consistantly brings up Election type buzz issues such as ACORN that only a partisan political organization would care about. Their typical priming the pumps of stories and photos or video which paints minorities in a bad light are more examples of their out of touch white GOP audience so dominant in their comments, the pundits (like Bill), their sources and maybe less so their news.

The issue with Fox and their use of resources is their ability to turn on and off their various sources of election impacting soap boxes: News, Tabloid Trash or Political Activism. Recognize this, they are good at what they do and more importantly HOW they do it to stay under the blatant race baiting radar.

By watching their pundits, viewing their editoriali placement of some stories and not others, and their audience comments, it is fair to say that they actually feed subtle ignorant racism.

The next time you watch Billo, their news or read their website trash keep this in mind: They are smart and they will start to focus on the voting demographics that went Democratic in 2008: Young, Minorities (particulary hispanic) and Women.

I could make an argument they both did the same thing (paid money in order to have a child of another race). Madonna or Angelina Jolie could have adopted a poor European kid, but chose a black child.

I see a clear double standard in O’Reilly’s thinking. Why it is not some betrayal of your race when white stars adopt black kids, but it’s a betrayal of MJ’s race to have white children through a surrogate? Why is it not a betrayal of their race when we white people suntan, or wear darker shades of makeup, or use spray tan? Aren’t we doing the same thing MJ did to his skin? Are we white people all ashamed of being white if we darken our skin? Are we rejecting our European ancestry? Should we be shunned by white society for these things the way O’Reilly thinks black people should shun Michael Jackson?

  84. The Shadow says:

Bill O’Reilly is not only an idiot, but he’s a RACIST idiot. Why to I say that? Just look at his comments when the dined at the black owned eatery in NY. He said, he didn’t see people yelling for their food or dancing in the isles or anything like that. What fair minded person goes into any ethnic restraurant looking to confirm debunked sterotype or myths like the ones he uttered with his own lips. Come on that would be like me going to a gathering of white people and saying: I didn’t see any cross burning for people wearing white sheets or anything like that. Come on people if I said that, it would be a racist remark plain and simple. I don’t walk around looking for whites to behave a certain way or saying or do things that are clearly sterotyping.

Secondly, the tone of his voice suggested he had a problem with a black man being honored for his life’s work. That’s why I don’t blame whites for the people they might worship like Elvis, Frank Sanatra, Princess Diana, Marilyn Monroe. I looked up to and admired them myself and I’m a black man. Any fool who trys to blame an entire race of people for the actions of a member of their race is ignorant. What if black people said: “Hitler was white, so all whites are evil”. When was the last time you saw a black commentator condemning all white people for admiring a white celebrity when they died? The man who was on O’Racist’s show called Jerry Faldwell racist, he didn’t say all white people shouldn’t celebrate his life.

Boot-nose Jackson wants to make a formal resolution for the molester and sexual deviant. Everyone please contact your Congressional Official and tell them “no” to this resolution.

So what I want to know is this: is Tracist’s “dark-toned individual” friend named …Darryl?

  91. Leftside Annie says:

Wow, just like Betelgeuse, here you are, Darrly, spewing your racist hatred!

So, tell me, what would Jesus say about Michael Jackson…?

Jesus will judge him, but because of his sexual acts, the outcome will not be good. Chances of him making it to heaven are slim.

“joe cantwell, go to the Al Franken photoshop thread from yesterday. Tracy and I just had the most fascinating conversation there”

Yes Joe he needs help. Scared all alone he is.

Oh Tracy. I just wanted joe to see your bizarre alternate reality. He is my witness when you deny it all later. I know ralph saw it, so he may have to be my witness.

Oh my gosh! I never thought of that! It must be Darryl! What other black guy would be weird enough to be best friends with tRacist?

Since Daryll wasn’t there, he can only guess that sex acts took place. That prejudges Jackson, and makes Daryll a hypocrite. His heavenly father won’t like that, when Daryll himself is judged.

  97. shoeless says:

Well joe, to be fair to Tracy, this is the first time he admitted that he lied. And, this is the first time he has told me he lives in alternate reality because real reality has a liberal bias.

  98. McGillipuddy says:

The man gets his jollies calling up young girls and talking dirty with a vibrator up his bum. Who cares what he says?

Poor Daryll. His fake piety won’t go over well when he reaches heaven. Unless Daryll was there, he is using hearsay to convict MJ. Just like Pilate did with Christ.

  100. shoeless says:

Daryll, are you Tracy_5’s black best friend, who’s color he can’t see?

  101. MapleStreet says:

I don’t get it. A lot of white folk like Michael Jackson and were at the memorial also.

So the blacks can’t hold him as an icon while the whites can ?

  102. lpeggy says:

Does Bill O think that Madonna, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie are less White, because they have Black children? That is his logic right? What an ass.

Note to Repugs, please stay away from any discussion of race, it only shows your true colors.

You seem to have some inside information that the courts didn’t have. Did he molest you?

  106. Purple State says:

It’s amazing how O’Reilly starts with a disclaimer that he doesn’t wish to intrude on the memory of Michael Jackson.

    Yet he does so anyways!

    Un.

    Freaking.

    Believable.

  107. Young Republican says:

O’Reilly is a God! I worship him! I love him! If he had bigger boobs, I’d be gay for him!

Good point. JESUS will judge him.

Unless O’Reilly has become Jesus (and wouldn’t that be a dilemma to liberal Christians!) he should keep his holier-than-all-of-thou judgments to himself.

  109. Young Republican says:

I’m a young gay black republican and I LOVE Bill O’reilly!!!!!!!!!!!!! He’s my hero!!! (I’m actually kinda gay for him)

  110. IndianaRaider says:

granted this story has run its course, it was however good to see Rev. Al Sharpton put Billo in the place and make him look more of an ass than normal.

  111. IndianaRaider says:

that is, if anyone happened to catch tonight’s show, lol

  112. dont be a jackass says:

First of all, O’reilly never said black people couldn’t hold Michael Jackson as an icon. He was simply wondering why they would want to hold a pedifile who didn’t want his kids (or himself) to be black as an icon for their race

  113. dont be a jackass says:

by the way lpeggy, Madonna, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie didn’t choose to have black children because they are black, unlike Michael Jackson who chose to have white children because he didn’t want them to be black. I wish liberals would think through their arguments more sometimes… It’s almost too easy to argue with them.

  114. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

Being that Bill O’Reilly is a visible leader of black American causes, he must know what he’s talking about. *snark*
