25 Latino groups hit Sessions for racial attacks.

Jeff SessionsLast week, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) claimed that Judge Sotomayor may not be fit for the Supreme Court because she served on the board of the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (now known as “LatinoJustice PRLDEF”), a highly regarded civil rights organization. On Monday, a group of 25 leading Latino organizations, including the Hispanic National Bar Association, the National Council of La Raza, and the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, sent a letter to Sessions slamming his questionable attacks on LatinoJustice PRLDEF:

LatinoJustice PRLDEF is a strong and vibrant institution and its work serves not only the Latino community, but the nation as a whole because it advances the basic American principles of equal opportunity and equal access to justice for all in our society. While we each have the right to disagree on specific issues, LatinoJustice PRLDEF’s body of work deserves our respect and yours. Attacks on Latino advocacy and civil rights organizations are not new – we have seen figures in the media mischaracterize and slander our good works, using provocative terms that fan the flames of ethnic animosity. We expect and are entitled to better from a sitting member of the United States Senate.

Sadly, however, Sessions has a long history of these kinds of attacks. Indeed, his own nomination to the federal bench was rejected by the Senate in 1986 because of Sessions’ record of bringing racially-motivated prosecutions, belittling African-American attorneys, and describing the NAACP as an “un-American” and “Communist-inspired” organization that “forced civil rights down the throats of people.” Twenty-three years later, Sessions hasn’t changed one bit.

Is Texas Harboring Torture Decider? By Ray McGovern

Editor’s Note: Prior to giving some talks in Texas, former CIA analyst Ray McGovern offered the following op-ed to the Dallas Morning News and the Fort-Worth Star Telegram. Both newspapers in George W. Bush’s home state turned it down:

Seldom does a crime scene have so clear a smoking gun. A two-page presidential memorandum of Feb. 7, 2002, leaves no room for uncertainty regarding the “decider” on torture. His broad-stroke signature made torture official policy.

This should come as no surprise. You see, the Feb. 7, 2002, memorandum has been posted on the Web since June 22, 2004, when then-White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales mistakenly released it, along with other White House memoranda.

The title seemed innocent enough – “Humane Treatment of al Qaeda and Taliban Detainees” – but in the body of the memo President George W. Bush authorized his senior aides to withhold Geneva Convention protections from suspected al-Qaeda and Taliban detainees.

Like Shakespeare, the media seem harshest on the lawyers, including Texans Gonzales and William J. Haynes II (Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld’s lawyer), who later outdid themselves trying to make torture legal.

  21. gooderservice says:

Senator Cardin was on C-Span Washington Journal this morning when two callers, republicans, definitively declared more than once that La Raza was a racist organization of which Sotomayor was a member.

NOT ONCE did Senator Cardin rebut the caller’s stated “fact” that La Raza is a racist organization. Not once.

(Granted, maybe a third person called in after I stopped watching it, said La Raza was a racist organization, and he rebutted that, but the two calls I heard, he did not) Shame on him.

The original targets of the Ku Klux Klan were Republicans, both black and white, according to a new television program and book, which describe how the Democrats started the KKK and for decades harassed the GOP with lynchings and threats.

An estimated 3,446 blacks and 1,297 whites died at the end of KKK ropes from 1882 to 1964.

The documentation has been assembled by David Barton of Wallbuilders and published in his book “Setting the Record Straight: American History in Black & White,” which reveals that not only did the Democrats work hand-in-glove with the Ku Klux Klan for generations, they started the KKK and endorsed its mayhem.

They are a male-dominated whites-only club. Older white women are allowed in only with their approval. Please notice how many of these aging “defenders of traditional marriage” discard their older wives for much younger and nubile models, quite often younger than their own children.

In the Old Testament book of Nehemiah, the nation of Israel rallied together in a grassroots movement to help rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and thus restore stability, safety, and a promising future to that great city. We have chosen this historical concept of “rebuilding the walls” to represent allegorically the call for citizen involvement in rebuilding our nation’s foundations. Interesting democrat facts…..

After The Civil Rights Act was passed Democrat President Lyndon Johnson praised Republicans for their overwhelming support.

The Republican Party was formed by anti-slavery activists to combat the pro-slavery Democrats

The Ku Klux Klan was formed by radical Democrats who opposed equality for blacks.

In 1935 Democrats defeated an Anti-Lynching Bill supported and put forward by Republicans.

The 1924 Democrat National Convention in New York was host to one of the largest Klan gatherings in American history. Dubbed the “Klanbake convention”, a minority of delegates attempted to condemn the presence of the Klan but was rebuked by the Klan supporting Democrat Majority.

On April 20, 1871 the Republican Congress enacted the Ku Klux Klan Act, outlawing Democratic Party-Affiliated terrorist groups.

Ronald Reagan, a Republican, made history on November 2, 1983 by signing into law Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday as a National Holiday. This is the first and only Federal Holiday that recognizes a Black American.

Sessions gets away with these type of attacks because his state does not have a large Hispanic population and the people of Alabama tolerate, maybe even support, his racist attitudes. The voters in Alabama put him in office and that speaks loudly about their attitudes. Sessions is a bitter white male who was denied a federal judgeship because of his racism. He will continue doing what he wants until the people in Alabama and the Republican party have had enough. At this time, change is quite remote.

  72. Frugalchariot says:

Racist bigotry is crap, pure and simple. It comes in all shapes and sizes, oozes out from behind many masks. It doesn’t come with a political party label attached (well, not until recently it didn’t) — guilt is widespread, a product of ignorance being carefully taught.

Twenty-some years ago, when my daughter was five years old and in kindergarten, she wrote something I still view as a profound example of pure rationality, unstained by culture. In her own words (transcribed from the handwritten piece of paper, still in my possession):

    [sic]:
I hav a drem that we all kood love 1 onother. I have a drem that we can de sistd’s and botr’s that wen the sun shins dow on the world that ther de pes on rth in evry plas for evry 1 of evry ras.”

For the Republicans who might happen to read the above, I graciously offer the following spell-checked version (not that will make a lot of difference to the bulk of them, but in the interest of … well, you know):

    “I have a dream that we all could love one another;
I have a dream that we can be sisters and brothers,
That when the sun shines down on the world that there be
Peace on Earth in every place
For every one of every race.”
    By Sarah, age five.

Words to live by. So ok, Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III, you’re a lot older than age five, at least chronogically (based on your pic of course). Where did you leave your mind?

  78. Nquest says:

    Republicans Love Facts posted:
“In 1979 Duke ran as a Democrat for the 10th district seat in the Louisiana State…”

LOL… Tell the whole story. Don’t leave anything out. A simple glance at the David Duke Wiki would have helped you avoid this grave error.

See, in 1979, Duke did not win his bid for the LA Senate seat; he was second with 26.6% percent of the vote. Yet, in 1989, running as a Republican, Duke won the election for a LA. House seat then followed that up by RUNNING AS A REPUBLICAN for LA’s U.S. Senate seat in 1990. He lost to the Democrat but still received 60% of the White vote.

In 1991, Duke RAN AS A REPUBLICAN for LA Governor. He lost but received 38.8% of the vote (you know, more votes than he did as a Democrat) and, according to him, 55% of his “constituency” — White voters.

In 1992, your boogie-man, David Duke RAN AS A REPUBLICAN candidate for president. In 1996, Duke, again, RAN AS A REPUBLICAN for the LA U.S. Senate seat.

So exactly what did you think you were accomplishing? The better question is: which party’s platform in the past 50 years is more in line with the David Duke’s of the world?

Simple answer: when it comes to racialized issues of crime (Willie Horton?), welfare (Reagan’s “Welfare Queens”), affirmative action, “illegal” immigration, etc. it’s clear the today’s Republican party is the next door neighbor, if not kissing cousins, to White Nationalists like David Duke (Pat Buchanan anyone?). That doesn’t make the Democrats, past or present, anything close to saints when it comes to race/racism (they ain’t) but it does highlight the hilarity of a Republican supporter/sympathizer trying to play the ‘Whose The Better White Party?’ game.

Funny how Republicans and those on the right will be quick to denounce the Lincoln era as the distant past when it comes to reparations for slavery but conveniently want to make Lincoln-the-racist-repatriationist an ever-present example of the party’s stance of racial equality.

Anyway, back to the tongue KISSING COUSINS thing…

Republicans continue to mess around like this at their own peril. Amazing that if they planned action to alienate Hispanics, it could not be better than their present behavior which will alienate Hispanics, that group of loyal Americans. The larger problem for Republicans is their tendency toward racism that demands that they misrepresent Sotomayor’s every statement. But they will not win this round. This SC nominee is particularly well qualified for the position of Supreme Court Justice. Thousands of fair minded people will lay it on the line for her. Further racism they introduce into this discussion will make them the pariah of our country. Besides, their racism is directly responsible for me changing my party affiliation and I am sure I am not alone. More and more, I am just disgusted with hate filled Republicans who have the idea it is their way or get lost.
