Rep. Steve King only one to vote against recognizing slave labor’s construction of U.S. Capitol.

steve-kingRep. Steve King (R-IA) was the only congressman to vote against a resolution yesterday that acknowledges the role that slaves played in the construction of the U.S. Capitol Building, reports Ryan Grim of the Huffington Post. According to the text of the resolution, which passed 399-1, its simple goal is to recognize those who constructed the Capitol with a marker:

“Whereas enslaved African-Americans performed the backbreaking work of quarrying the stone which comprised many of the floors, walls, and columns of the Capitol…

Whereas recognition of the contributions of enslaved African-Americans brings to all Americans an understanding of the continuing evolution of our representative democracy; and

Whereas a marker dedicated to the enslaved African-Americans who helped to build the Capitol will reflect the charge of the Capitol Visitor Center to teach visitors about Congress and its development…”

King has never been afraid to stand alone, particularly when it comes to his blatantly racist sentiments. He has referred to both the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus as “separatist groups” and immigrants as “livestock” who are waging a “slow-moving terrorist attack.” This past election season, he used Obama’s Kenyan heritage and middle name to proclaim that terrorists would be “dancing in the streets” if “Hussein Obama” won. In 2008, King also said that apologizing for slavery wasn’t about contrition, rather “White Americans wallowing in guilt.”

Update King has released a statement explaining why he opposed the resolution:

Last night I opposed yet another bill to erect another monument to slavery because it was used as a bargaining chip to allow for the actual depiction of 'In God We Trust' in the CVC. The Architect of the Capitol and liberal activists opposed every reference to America's Christian heritage, even to the extent of scrubbing 'In God We Trust' from the depiction of the actual Speaker's chair in the U.S. House of Representatives.

I am not surprised, I am sure he doesn’t answer to any African American voters, doesn’t consider any that might live in the communities he represents “constituents”, and probably DOES answer to a lot of racists and wingnuts that he calls his “base”.

Folks like him can’t keep slaves anymore, which I am sure the likes of him regrets, but they can work to keep the atrocities of that aspect of American history secret.

Well, well, Timeee is a racist. I knew he was a lot of things, but I didn’t realize he was a racist too
You don’t think slaves helped build the capital building?

King probably considers this consistent with his opposition to non-European immigrants who take away jobs from hardworking Americans by working for slave wages . . .
then again, perhaps he is just a brain dead racist hick elected by a bunch of corn fed mouth breathers. Got it on the second try.

What is so sad is that King represents the area in Iowa where I grew up (Cass County). Those Iowans deserve better representation than they are getting from King. When Ames was part of that district Tom Harkin represented it. When Ames was swapped for Sioux City following a census where Iowa lost a seat it opened the door for King. What a change!

  18. bug says:

I don’t know much about this guy, on the surface he seems racist but as far as the resolution, I don’t understand the point of the resolution. Why? Why even put this resolution out there?
My first reaction: What a waste of time.
To acknowledge that yes slaves helped build our Whitehouse and many other buildings under extreme torture? OK lets move on….
Maybe i’m insensitive can someone explain it to me?
Congressman King is probably a worthless partisan politician who happens to also be a racist but the question still stands, what’s the point of the resolution? We had slaves in our past and they helped build the Whitehouse?
Oh well, i’m sure there are far more things they are wasting their time on…. this is just another one.

  44. paleolib says:

Uh, “Republicans Can’t Recognize Facts”, the King post is about recognizing and rectifying mistakes. FDR made one with internment(with a lot of help from the Reublican Governor of California Earl Warren by the way who spent the rest of his life trying to rectify his mistake). You won’t find any Democrats defending internment today. It was evil. You will apparently find an idiot Republican congressman from Iowa either defending slavery or denying that slave labor helped build some of the buildings we now consider emblems of liberty. Feel free to defend King if you wish.

  45. winddancer says:

Are Steve King of IA and Pete King of NY related in some way…like cousins or something? Because they are both militaristic racists, as well as prone to make frankly off-the-wall statements. I mean, it’s one thing to have a father who keeps a lawyer on retainer, OK. It’s another thing to be so stupid as to think that registration on a blog constitutes filing a trademark application, and to think that your dad’s lawyer (”it”) is prepared to defend such a ridiculous claim.

Particularly when both you and the target of your ire were completely anonymous to begin with.

One thing about the law, it’s kind of based on real people being honest with each other about what constitutes reality, y’know? That doesn’t happen here. But you go talk to daddums’ lawyer, and have “it” explain it to you instead. Unlike me, “it” can offer you a real shoulder to cry on.

    From the wiki:
“In addition to African slaves, Europeans, including Irish,[3] Scottish,[4] English, and Germans,[5] were brought over in substantial numbers as indentured servants,[6] particularly in the British Thirteen Colonies.[7] Over half of all white immigrants to the English colonies of North America during the 17th and 18th centuries may have been indentured servants.[8] In the 18th and early 19th century numerous Europeans traveled to the colonies as redemptioners.[9] In addition, a substantial number[citation needed] of indentured servants were brought over from the Indian subcontinent by the British East India Company in the 17th and 18th centuries.[citation needed][10]

It has been estimated that the redemptioners comprised almost 80% of the total British and continental immigration to America down to the coming of the Revolution.[11]“

Dude, we can beat their arguments fairly.

Absolutely, it’s proven with great regularity.

TP’s trolls are already so profoundly broken and self-defeating on so many levels. They really don’t need to be exaggerated through parody.

    To everyone else;

Sorry, I know it was juvenile, but it was a lot of fun. Really.

This was a test of the emergency con-troll the troll center. This was ONLY a test.

No, what we’re working on is ignoring stupid trolls. The fact that you got few responses is a good thing.

But really, it wasn’t just juvenile, it was extremely annoying. Take up a different hobby, or go out and do some volunteer work.

Steve King dishonors all the brave soldiers from Iowa who fought to preserve the Union and also to end the institution of slavery. King would be better off taking his ante-bellum attitudes to South Carolina where his views would better align with their cultural history.

Maybe not, but I think you do and you should see a mental health professional to try and get rid of it. Ask them to talk clearly when explaining what you have because these problems are usually hard to pronounce.

Come back and let us all know how things turn out. Good luck and get well soon.

Haha… even Ron Paul voted yes on this, and that guy tries his hardest to find a reason to vote no on any bill.

  119. mild_bill says:

Wait! I’ve tracked The Young Republican down!

He’s actually a 28-year old white dude.. High
school dropout. Sells dope late at night and
babysits his 4 kids in the day, while his wife
works the local quick stop! His car is a ‘93
Chevy (the big upside down bath tub), smokes
and uses 2 quarts of oil a week. Unfortunately,
he got an eviction notice last week! He’s 3
months behind on his trailer rent. But it’s
okay. His mother in law said he can sleep in
the garage; his wife and kids can sleep in the
    other bedroom.

    Wonder why he’s angry????
