‘Paranoid’ Netanyahu calls David Axelrod and Rahm Emanuel ‘self-hating Jews.’

benjamin_netanyahu-webThe Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports today on the “atmosphere of permanent crisis” surrounding the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. According to the report, a handful of Netanyahu’s top aides “dislike each other: They are constantly badmouthing each other and blaming each other for leaks.” One aide even revealed that Netanyahu attacked President Obama’s chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and senior advisor David Axelrod as “self-hating Jews”:

Netanyahu appears to be suffering from confusion and paranoia. He is convinced that the media are after him, that his aides are leaking information against him and that the American administration wants him out of office. Two months after his visit to Washington, he is still finding it difficult to communicat[e] normally with the White House. To appreciate the depth of his paranoia, it is enough to hear how he refers to Rahm Emanuel and David Axelrod, Obama’s senior aides: as “self-hating Jews.”

An aide also said that Netanyahu thought that his recent speech tacitly endorsing a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict (an endorsement that came with enormous caveats) “would become mandatory reading at schools in the United States, and when he realized that Obama gave no such order, he went back to being frustrated.” Matt Yglesias notes that Emanuel, who has taken a leading role in the Obama administration in pushing the two-state solution, has frustrated many in the right-wing American Jewish community for being too “tough” on the Israelis.

Why in the hell would a useless speech about a two-state (non)solution be given any attention whatsoever , much less mandatory reading for anyone ?

This just shows that the disease of conservatism is the same regardless of country, or political affiliation. And it’s founded not only in hate for others, but hate for self, which then gets projected on everyone else.

  5. jrfunkenstein says:

Israel is finding itself increasingly isolated by its heavy handed approach to dealing with Palestinian soverignty, which is especially galling in the face of the Obama administrations’ refusal to grant Israel carte blanche, particularly with respect to the illegal settlement issue, among others, which is destroying Israel’s credibility when it comes to the peace process.

Perhaps Bibi should talk to former officials from South Africa about when they realized continuing policies which are seen as abhorrent by the rest of the world convinced them that such policies were counter productive to their survival as political entities.

  7. Gary Kleppe says:

And this is news? “Self-hating Jew” has been the standard knock against any Jews who question the Israeli government’s actions pretty much as long as that country has been in existence.

  8. tom says:

I doubt that there is any equitable solution to the Israel/Palestine situation so long as Bibi is in office.

The problem is the same one that plagues the neo-cons — an inability to distinguish the difference between being Jewish and being a Zionist.

As it is, Bibi is a Zionist. He and his supporters will perpetuate and deepen the divisions in the Middle East to the point of their own extinction eventually. Let’s just hope that he doesn’t take down the state of Israel in the process.

  9. Marie says:

    raynman, I agree.
Netanyahu is an agressive personality, with a tendency toward unreasonableness and belligerence — not unlike a person suffering from paranoia.

  10. MCMetal says:

The US is largely responsible for the Israeli government’s recent pigheaded and arrogant behavior ; past administrations have coddled Israel so much , they now view themselves as being able to demand and get whatever they wish , as spoiled children often do.

Israel has a right to do what they want without the US approval or support. Now the agreement in 1946 with the UN when Israel settled on Palestine land has been broken. Israel has the Nukes to defend or attack who ever they want. Yes over the many many years Israel has gotten Americans put in place to pay for all their needs and get the all the land of Palestine. One problem the World is now Global and not led by the United States. Listening to the Leaders of Israel who are demanding all, while the Israel people want peace. Sounds alot like the US during the Bush 8 year crime wave. It’s all up to the Israel people to gain peace as their leaders end up resigning in corruption and rape.

No doubt Netanyahu is not likable etc. …, but Haaretz and TP write “An aide also said that Netanyahu thought that his recent speech tacitly endorsing a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict (an endorsement that came with enormous caveats) “would become mandatory reading at schools in the United States, and when he realized that Obama gave no such order, he went back to being frustrated.”” – It is a bridge too far.

Netanyahu is not stupid, and his civics classes in High School in Philly – from which he graduated – made it absolutely clear that US Presidents have absolutely no such power, neither do Israeli PMs. Talk about the real racist nebbisha comment here and that is it.

We “self-haters” as Gary in #7 says are used to this, but the “stupid-paranoid-victim-tantrum Jew” stereotype is just as repulsive.

It is easier to disregard compromise when you claim the mantle of a holy warrior.

Yes but the religious zealotry gets in the way of negotiating.

Haaretz (and TP for the reprint). An unnamed associate spouting patent bullshit on its’ face. We are not talking about a leader that has no understanding of the US, for hell’s sake Netanyahu lived and worked here for how many years, and has had family through the whole country for generations. It is an unattributed statement made to make him look stupid and also plays the stereotype card noted above.

If this were 1978, and a report from an unnamed associate of a rural mayor in Guinea-Bissau tipping us regarding the mayor’s tantrum over required reading in US schools it would barely be believable. You would recognize it as bullshit and racist, but maybe believeable. “Ignorant, backward pygmies in darkest Africa, don’t understand the big city.”

Here, it is bullshit, plain and simple. Unless you believe “ignorant, backward Jews, don’t understand the big city.”

A critical eye would be good to develop. Netanyahu is a putz, some would say an evil putz, but he is not stupid; and, trying to make that part of the argument seems like bad High School debate.

Good point. I don’t believe that religion has nothing to do with it – there are certainly small groups of extremely vocal zealots on both sides whose motivation is religion. And rightly so – Jerusalem/al-Quds is a very significant place for the three Abrahamic religions.

But I also think a lot of the religious talk is hyped up out of proportion to create an us-v-them mindset, when the real underlying issues are economic and resource ones.

Everything starts at the beginning and this conflict started in 1946 after Jewish people had no place to settle. Yes many Jews ran from Hitler to countries all over the World. But many countries said they couldn’t admit anymore Jews so the United Nations stepped in. United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine
as agreed. But like any Country in time Israel wanted more. As America built to be a World Leader and Jews became part of the Government and insiders things changed. Now we have Israel using the Bible to say it is God who wants them to have all the land as it was written in the Old Testament. If that works Israel will have control of the World as God created earth. Few remember God and Jesus said they are not of this world, but it works on people who are like sheep.

Now that’s quite impossible. “Pygmy” tribes such as the Mbenga and Mbuti are indigenous to Central Africa, not West Africa.

More to the point, I think I would definitely read those negative African stereotypes into the story if I were determined to read those negative African stereotypes into the story. But I could also read it objectively and assume that the mayor of, say, Farim or Catió was genuinely angry about something, or that his associate wanted to make him look foolish. I don’t see backwardness or ignorance or African stereotypes in that – just politicians being politicians.

I think it’s quite possible that you’re reading far too much into Netanyahu’s alleged quote and the alleged associate who allegedly reported it. Or too little. I didn’t get the impression that he literally wanted his speech inserted into the curriculum of all U.S. public school systems. I got the impression that he thought his speech was simply a groundbreaking speech that should’ve gotten more coverage in the U.S. That’s all. No stereotypes involved – just egoes.

  48. 5th Estate says:

chiroptera toasterhead Says: Religion is just a veneer that obscures the real issues.

As I understand it, it is the religious zealots (the Hassidim and Hashemi are the names I know of) make the difference as to which Party gets into power, every time.
That being the caw, both Parties pander to the Religious fanatics in order to gain a majority, so the Religious agenda ALWAYS dominates what are supposed to be secular politics.

The zealots use what we call the Old testament to justify the re-acquisition of land that their ancient ancestors held only briefly before giving up in the face of more powerful rival kingdoms/empires–And it should be noted, that prior to the Kingdom of Judea, the Tribe of Israel ( that was formerly the Tribe of Jacob)were nomadic, like many in the region.
They abandoned ‘their land’ for Egypt and resettled there until they outstayed there welcome, then wandered back to Palestine and took it over as an invading force (killing all excpet the young girls whom they took as slaves). All this according to their own texts.

The Diaspora was their second abandonment of ‘their land’ and that abandonment lasted for around 1800 years or so.

But according to the zealots they still ‘deserve’ the land and as they breed like rabbits they are creating another justification for land seizure (and also increasing in power as a political force in Israel).
And all the while they depend on the government to serve and protect them, whilst contributing little to the modern more secular population whom they regard as apostate.

Like the most fundamental Muslims, they want to create a pure Theocratic state bounded by the land claims of 2,500 years ago (the fundamentalist Muslims only want to go back about 1400 years).

Eh. If they really wanted to overcome, they’d follow King and Ghandi. I believe nobody wants to win. They just want to kill and be killed and go to ‘heaven’.

Any Jew who thinks his sand is sacred is insane. Any Palestinian willing to bomb him/herself for some sacred sand is insane. This will only stop the same way it stopped between Egypt and Israel–from the very top, at the Presidential levels of all countries involved.
