Aspiring philosopher Palin quotes ‘Plato.’

In the wake of her resignation announcement, Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) has been devoting significant time to her Twitter account. Today, she offered advice to Alaska children, asking them to “take time to take your parents fishing.” Her tweet follows with a quotation she attributes to the Greek philosopher Plato:

So AK kids: take time to take your parents fishing: You learn more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation - Plato

Although this aphorism has been misattributed to Plato in books such as “Confidence: How To Succeed At Being Yourself,” “Training For Dummies,” and “Food Is the Frosting — Company Is The Cake,” there is no evidence that the master of dialogues ever uttered such words. Instead, this quotation is most likely corrupted from a 1670 gentleman’s etiquette guide, wherein author Richard Lindgard explains that that the true measure of a “man’s disposition” can be found by gambling against him:

Take heed of playing often or deep at Dice and Games of Chance, for that is more chargeable than the seven deadly sins; Yet you may allow your self a certain easie Sum to spend at Play, to gratifie Friends, and pass over the Winter Nights, and that will make you indifferent for the Event. If you would read a man’s Disposition, see him Game, you will then learn more of him in one hour, than in seven Years Conversation, and little Wagers will try him as soon as great Stakes, for then he is off his Guard.

*Sigh* Let’s try this one more time Sarah. Plato was a Greek philosopher whose work you never studied. Try to keep them straight when attributing quotes, m’kay?

Sen. John Ensign’s attorney acknowledged Thursday that the Nevada Republican’s parents paid nearly $100,000 to the family of his mistress after she and her husband left his staff in April 2008.

In a statement from Paul Coggins, Ensign’s attorney, said that the senator gave Doug Hampton, Cindy Hampton and their two children gifts worth $96,000 and that “each gift was limited to $12,000.”

“The payments were made as gifts, accepted as gifts and complied with tax rules governing gifts,” Coggins said.

WE destroyed her? Nah — she showed herself to be a raging incompetent all on her own. WE never did anything except to shine the spotlight she strove for, and she never complained until that spotlight showed how unqualified she was for the position and status she sought.

Incidentally, that spotlight gets shown on everyone who seeks the national stage, whether it’s Palin, Hillary, Obama, Giuliani, McCain, etc. Sarah Palin isn’t being singled out.

Hello Think Progress! I’m new. Just thought I’d introduce myself. My name is Melvin. How is everyone today?

  96. Rich H says:

    Hello Hesiod, Welcome.

Isn’t it funny Spice can’t name a newspaper or magazine she reads but she can supposedly quote Plato.

  97. Hesiod says:

Ah, but Rich H, she can name the country of Africa!

(and if she get’s on her top of her ’snow machine’ she might even see it)

  98. Rich H says:

    Hesiod,

I’m bouncing around the threads alot today – I seem to have extra time. Good to see you (so to speak). Watch out for the trolls.

  99. Hesiod says:

What’s a troll? You mean like the kind you find under a bridge?

  100. Vincennes says:

To bastardize a Mark Twain quote: “Palin. A good-looking woman spoiled.”

  101. Rich H says:

    Hesiod,

The trolls we have here should be living under a bridge, but alas, are not. I caught your response to tracy on another thread – good job.

  102. Sam Sunset says:

TP – you’re digressing from the issues! You’ve got a huge following, so let’s avoid nitpicking stories that could possibly take away from your credibility. I can’t stand Palin any more than the next guy, but there are more important and obvious things to point out to the public about this woman.

  103. mbtruth says:

I think she was really meaning to quote “Playdoh”.

  104. pete says:

I think that Bible Spice is an important issue. She’s the heir apparent to the GOP leader and it’s important that every news source in the country reports on her erratic behavior and intellectual bankruptcy.

Remember. The GOP is the party that inflicted the stupidest President in American history upon us. And they’ll do it again if we relax our vigilance.

  105. Boojum says:

Have any of you actually read Plato? Try Symposium and the Phaedo, where they come to the conclusion that the highest form of love is an old man for a young boy.

    Quote that, biotch

  106. Boojum says:

In other words, Plato was a Republican Congressman.

  107. Boojum says:

    Thereby explaining Plato’s “Republic”.

One could argue that our Nation owes as much to institutionalized pedophilia as it does to Judeo-Christian mythos. For Republicans, damn near indisputable.

  108. Scowboy says:

Hello, everyone! Here’s one of my favorite quotes. (the first two might be switched – the more learned among you, hopefully will correct me)

“To do is to be” ______ Socrates
“To be is to do” ______ Sartre
“Do be do be do” _____Sinatra

  109. Willy says:

    Scowboy:

    Also too:

    “Yabba-Dabba-Doo!” —- Fred Flintstone

  110. Caribbean Joe says:

Rule, Sarah! A contest between you and Republican Light Queen Hillary will be the Fight of the Century.
