Steele dismisses Palin as ‘old school’: ‘That’s not the generation of candidates I’m trying to groom.’ (Updated)

Michael Steele RNC Chairman Michael Steele has been sending mixed messages on Sarah Palin in recent days. On Tuesday, he said that he believed 2012 was “off the table” for Palin. He then backtracked and said he meant that talking about 2012 was off the table, adding that he welcomed Palin’s presence. But yesterday at a state GOP event in Indiana, Steele summarily dismissed not only Palin, but also Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC) and Sen. John Ensign (R-NV):

Steele on Wednesday brushed off the recent incidents as “old news, old school.”

“That’s not the generation of candidates I’m trying to groom, he said.

Steele said the party needs to get back to its small-government roots. Daniels and fellow governors Haley Barbour of Mississippi, Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota and Bobby Jindal of Louisiana are great examples, he said.

“These guys are the laboratories for the ideas we believe in,” Steele said.

David Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union, told Newsmax that Palin has to stop complaining. “You’ve got to recognize that there are people who want you to fail,” he said. “And if you spend your time worrying about them, or whining about what they say, at the very least it’ll get you off your game.”

Update Greg Sargent reports that the Indianapolis Star has edited its article to reflect that Steele was not talking about Palin.

  1. Another Joe says:

Interesting, wasn’t he proclaiming this she was “exciting” and full of potential on Monday? The powers that be in the repug/neocon party (and steele is not one of them) must have finally gotten around to issuing a “position paper” of talking points.

Too funny – going from a “maverick” to “old school” in less than a year!

  2. Mr.Bungle says:

Hopefully he’s grooming himself. That would be excellent!!

    “You da Man!”

  3. RUCeriousMaggot! says:

If he’s trying to groom candidates, is he taking lessons from Mark Foley?

  4. RUCeriousMaggot! says:

“These guys are the laboratory rats for the ideas we believe in,” Steele said. When given appropriate amounts of cheese, they find their way through the neocon maze with ease, he delighted!

  5. shoeless says:

He’s trying to groom Haley Barbour? WTF?

  6. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

Good luck with that Mr. Chairman. The new breed of young Republicans is just as out of touch with truth and reality as your “old school” losers. Most are disciples of Newt Gingrich…’nuff said.

  7. ralph the wonder locust says:

What’s the over/under on Steele walking this back?

    I’m saying 1 pm today.

  8. Parlezvous says:

As usual, I am confused by what Steele is trying to say and I believe that he is confused about what he wants to say as well. If he is attempting to “groom” candidates, they may well be as confusing as he is. If a white man were president, Steele would be looking for a job along with the other millions in America.

    Ye gods!

  9. Mr.Bungle says:

    “Old School?” Really Steele?

Will someone please inform him that his party generally loathes minorities. He himself got the not because he is qualified (thats obvious) but because the Republicans excel at tokenism.

Hey Steele? You’re about as black Brad Pitt.

  10. shoeless says:

What were the Republicans teaching in this school? Who were the teachers, Livingston and Gingrich?

  12. lvdragonlady says:

ALL of the republicans are ‘OLD SCHOOL’ between all of them they have not had 1 new thought in so long they would not know a new thought if it jumped out at them and yelled ‘BOO’.

I am growing slightly tired of the endless use of old of sate kidspeak… True Dat…

But, whining is her game. Don’t Republicans ever listen to each other?

These people are making my head spin.

  15. dbadass says:

    out of date…
Still a little sate would be nice just the same…

  16. misscoleopteramolly says:

I’m just trying to wrap my mind around Steele “grooming” candidates, since he appears himself to be about as well groomed for his position as Harriet Miers was for the Supreme Court.

If Steele is in charge of “grooming”, the results will no doubt provide as much entertainment and as little threat to the Democrats as Steele himself has. However, I suspect that the rest of the GOP will let him have his little grooming fantasy while making him as irrelevant as possible.

  17. theswan says:

What’s his solution for NEW? Anything that pops out of his ass at any given moment? He has nothing on silly sarah.

  18. Zimzone says:

The Republic’s future is Barbour, Pawlenty & Jindal?

    Good luck with that, Steele.

Maybe Jindal can exorcise the demons out of his Party.

Pawlenty can then cut the budget, while Barbour cuts the cheese.

I’m trying to wrap my mind around the idea that Haley Barbour is new school.

Oh forget it. My mind can’t wrap that far. Does Micheal Steele even know who Haley Barbour is? Good lord, Barbour would lynch Steele from the nearest tree just for fun, if he thought he could get away with it.

  21. misscoleopteramolly says:

I don’t see anybody on Steele’s short list as being all that stellar (I mean, c’mon — Bobby Jindal?), but at least Steele has discarded Sanford and Ensign as hopefuls, and he’s not even mentioning anybody named Bush. He gets a couple of points for common sense on that alone.

I have a feeling that the 2012 election will look a lot like the 1936 election, with anybody the GOP nominates being Alf Landon.

  22. dbadass says:

Why isn’t he grooming that annoying middle schooler or whatever he is?

  23. ralph the wonder locust says:

“These guys are the laboratories for the ideas we believe in,” Steele said.

Unfortunately, the laboratories are used at night as bingo parlors, which does tend to contaminate the experiments being conducted during the day.

  24. shoeless says:

Does Micheal Steele’s mother know that he’s grooming a white supremacist?

  25. Wiz says:

Steele is going draw the hate of the Palin wing of the Repubs. I suspect he will be departing soon. As far as who he thinks is the future of the GOP, not much there to pick from. I just want to take an opportunity to endorse any of the losers he mentioned.

  26. LividLib says:

“One man alone can be pretty dumb sometimes, but for real bona fide stupidity, there ain’t nothin’ can beat teamwork.”

    - E. Abbey

That pretty much sums up Steele and the repugnican party.

  27. evangenital says:

Steele is grooming the fifty-plus fat white guy generation, preferably from the Deep South.

I think that Steele is still dealing with certain white/black homoerotic dominance issues.

That guy is a total doormat for his repiggie white masters, who use and abuse him constantly.

  28. christopher wiwi says:

I saw a picture of Barbour,he looks real new (old) school standing in front of the Confederate Flag………..

  29. 5th Estate says:

I don’t have the link now, but yesterday I came across an official Young Republican site where the was a post decrying the acceptance and promotion of blatant racists in the YR organization.

Whether the post was one of heartfelt disgust or an acknowledgment that obvious racism should be expunged for purely political reasons I couldn’t be sure, but if Steele is talking about grooming Young Republicans I can’t imagine he’s even MET any of them yet, because the odds are that some of them would insist he come in to their conferences by the “Coloreds Only” door and stand in the back, serving Mint Juleps.

  30. dasm says:

With Steele grooming candidates, they’ll end up rather disheveled.

  31. Michael Lafferty says:

    Let’s see if I understand this…

Corrupt: Haley Barbour, opportunistic: Tim Pawlenty and inept: Bobby Jindal.

Somewhere in that mix, there ought to be room for the consensus candidate: Sarah Palin is easily all three!

…if Steele is talking about grooming Young Republicans I can’t imagine he’s even MET any of them yet…

He’s obviously never met his predecessor, Haley Barbour, who was in charge of the RNC’s racist “Southern Strategy” for several years.

OMG, I just realized that Michael Steele is now coordinating the RNC’s Southern Strategy to win elections in the south by scaring white rednecks with the negro boogyman! Irony strikes again!

  35. Roket says:

Steele is grooming glue factory horses. The republican party is frigging screwed.

  36. labman57 says:

Not quite right. Palin’s obvious ignorance, inarticulateness, and lack of sound judgment are a reflection of the fact that she is NO SCHOOL.

  37. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

I think everyone has misunderstood Steele. When he says he is grooming the next generation of Republicans, he means it literally.

It is likely that Steele knows Republicans will be out of power for at least a generation so he must mean he is grooming the next generation, which, of course, are children right now.

I suspect Steele is referring to the Republicans version of a Hitler youth style program where it’s Steele’s job to make sure he combs the hair of the next generation and brushes their teeth.

    /snark

  38. MapleStreet says:

When STEELE DISSES YOU, you have been thoroughly DISSED.

PALIN IS OLD SCHOOL ? I thought she was all mavericky and all. Can anyone give me an example of a repub prior to 8 years ago that Palin reminds you of ?

  43. ohsuzanna says:

I predict the future: Limbaugh will force Steele to apologize to Palin before the end of business tomorrow.

  44. ElBruce says:

“These guys are the laboratories for the ideas we believe in,” Steele said.

    More like the laboratory rats.

    Another Joe Says:

Steele is always the last person to find out just what crazy thing Steele just said.

“That’s not the generation of candidates I’m trying to groom….

….well, being a republic fascist party member that generation would be more along the lines of 12 – 16 year olds….right Mr. Folley…er…ah…Steele.

  47. Leftside Annie says:

Oh Mikey, Mikey, Mikey – you make me giggle. You be da man! You tell Sarah which way to wear her GOP hat, ok?

  48. spencers mom says:

Steele’s trying to paint Palin in the worst possible light (granted, not much effort needed) because he suspects that she’s been promised his RNC Chair!

Okay, maybe he’s not smart enough to put together the pieces, but I suspect she’s been promised the RNC Chair.

    PEACE

  53. pags2 says:

The fact that Steele has again tripped over his own tongue is old news.

  54. AmiBlue says:

I would have a slightly better impression of the gop if anyone but Steele were saying this. I don’t believe he has any clout in the party.

  55. austininc4 says:

    note to M. Steele:

“Be careful M. Steele, Ex-Gov. Palin will be unemployed in a fews weeks. She might want your JOB, and you know what that means.”

Steele has been known to put his foot in his mouth, and his head up his A…..

Look for M. Steele, at the Employment Security Commission, some times next month.

  56. SP Biloxi says:

“Steele summarily dismissed not only Palin, but also Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC) and Sen. John Ensign (R-NV)” lol Did Steele check in with Boss Limbaugh when he dissed “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” Sanford, You Betcha Palin, and “God never intended for us not to do this” Ensign [this is the exact quote from his goodbye letter to her lover].

“That’s not the generation of candidates I’m trying to groom, he said” Groom???? lol Keeping talking Mike, You da man!

  57. The Angry Republican says:

Yeah keep spinning steel baby…sooner or later your number will come up…hahahahah
