Citing ‘national security’ concerns, prison officials ban Obama’s books.

audacity-of-hopeFederal prison officials have banned an inmate from reading President Obama’s books, claiming that the books contain sensitive national security information which must be kept secret:

The federal government’s most secure prison has determined that two books written by President Barack Obama contain material “potentially detrimental to national security” and rejected an inmate’s request to read them. . . .

Prison officials cite specific pages – but not specific passages – in the books that they deem objectionable. They include one page in Obama’s 1995 book, “Dreams from My Father,” and 22 separate pages in his policy-oriented 2006 book, “The Audacity of Hope.” It was not immediately obvious what passages might have been deemed problematic, though nearly half of the pages cited are in a chapter devoted to foreign affairs.

In The Audacity of Hope, Obama writes that “the dealth penalty does little to deter crime” and explains his “basic principle that no innocent person should end up on death row.” Perhaps that’s just too sensitive for prisoners to read.

Federal prison officials. Banning the President’s books. Because reading the President’s books poses national security risks.

    Fire their taxpayer-funded redneck asses!

    PEACE

  2. calavzma says:

if a book is available on the shelves of any book store it is not “detrimental to national security”

add in the fact that our current president wrote this book and it seems incredibly strange that anyone would be denied the opportunity to read it.

this is in a FEDERAL prison?!?!

there is absolutely no way obama’s book is in any way a threat to national security.

  3. dbadass says:

I find it sort of amusing that the very economic conditions wrought by the former Administration have now become the limiting factor on the death penalty

  4. ralph the wonder locust says:

Okay, checking out the article, it appears that the inmate is a member of al Qaeda and is serving a sentence for plotting to assassinate President Bush.

Maybe there’s something to it, but it still seems like a violation of rights.

  5. rastaman says:

why don’t the NAZIs have a book burning in the prison yard?

the more they try to ban it….the more they want it.

  6. vinylspear says:

How about banning “My Pet Goat” instead?

  7. Mr.Bungle says:

    Wow!?!?!?

Why not just burn all copies in the town square. WTF!?!?!?

  8. dbadass says:

I wonder if they ban Tucker Max?

  9. kevinz says:

Are Americans becoming chickens once more, scared! First there is the issue of, Guantanamo pirsoners coming to your yards! nothwithstanding the fact that we are the most perwerful military on the planet. We already have terrorists in our yards and they never escaped as for the book, that is far fetched.

  10. Mike Hunt says:

The Bureau of Prisons is an arm of the Department of Justice and the Department of Justice is a part of the Obama Administration. I thought this was all weird until it dawned on me that the prison in quesiton is probably the super-max facility in Colorado Springs. Colo Springs is infested with right wing conservative whack jobs like Ted Haggard to list just a few. Is it really any wonder that the idiots would make a decision like this? I’ll bet the SES Warden of that prison will now wind up directing prison inmates in Barrow Alaska or Newark after making this lame-brained decision.

  11. paleolib says:

I would think prison officials would want Super Max inmates, particularly those incarcerated for plotting against the US to read Obama’s books as they are both inspirational and aspirational regarding the future prez’s love of and vision for America. Perhaps that concept is a bit too subtle for these guys.

  12. jerseyboyblue says:

And yet, they allow porn to pass freely through the prison system.

  13. dbadass says:

Is it Turkish porn by any chance?

  14. Parlezvous says:

Some things are difficult to believe and prison officials banning books written by our President is added to the list. Perhaps these prison officials could organize a book burning to entertain the inmates. There is nothing unique about printed matter that decries the death penalty. This sounds like yet another case of bureaucrats run amok.

    Ye gods!

  15. stateofthedivision says:

    So what are prisons teaching?

Perhaps these same prison officials should allow the books written by George W. Bush be read in the cell blocks. Oh, that’s right, he didn’t write any books.

Well I know our government still hasn’t arrested Bush, Rice, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz so does that count as ‘letting loose’ “5 hard core murdering terrorists“?

  40. slappy magoo says:

In this instance, the devil may be in the details. We’re talking about a guy who joined al queda, plotted to kill President Bush, and is now in a Supermax facility asking for materials written by another president. Considering that al Queda is still considered a terrorist organization, whose leaders have stated in the past that the downfall of the USA is one of their goals, maybe depriving a member of anything having to do with any elected official isn’t a bad thing.

I’d disagree if, amongst a million other examples I could eventually whip up, the prisoner wasn’t denied other Obama-related materials, like posters or t-shirts, OR if the prisoner were allowed books written by conservative politicians-turned-authors.

I will agree, though, that the “national security” citation sounds like bull.

Ahahaha, he think Faux News is “fair and credible.” What a moron. Just because Bush/Cheney had them incarcerated and tortured for five years does not mean they were guilty of anything. I don’t know who they released but they didn’t releaseany actual terrorists.

  43. chiroptera toasterhead says:

I can only assume that the idiot is talking about this:

    U.S. Frees Iranians From Iraq

In Iraq, the U.S. military has unexpectedly released five Iranians after holding them for two and a half years. After their release, the men personally met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki before being handed over to the Iranian Embassy. The U.S. had accused the men of orchestrating deadly attacks in Iraq.

And, typically, the troll assumes that they’re hard-core murdering terrorists despite the fact that they were never charged with anything and there is no proof of their involvement in any attacks, as evidenced by the fact that they have been released without charge.

His associates outside of prison have free access to the book. He’d have access to the book if he ever left prison. It’s not like there’s an AQ cell relying on a jailed member to use the prison library system to come up with their research materials.

No Keith, they were hardened terrorists! They had to be or they wouldn’t hve been in prison. And we never tortured anyone because we don’t torture, so whatever it was we did them it wasn’t torture. And bush was a war hero even though he never received an honorable discharge and kerry was a coward because he was a democrat. and republicans are fiscally sound because they are republicans so don’t pay any attention to the record deficit President Obama inherited from bush, it’s President Obama’s fault because he’s a tax and spend liberal. In fact he is the most liberal politician ever, until the next one comes along….

Yea If this troll doesn’t read all the bs faux puts out from this website, it’s no helping the troll. He’s more interested in making up shit like their idols. Not one single person with commonsense in the whole club.

I don’t know but I would be a little ticked off if I were picked up by foreigners occupying my land. Then I think I would be just a slight more concern if I were tortured, taken from my friend and family (well, what is left) posed and lied to every hour on the hour. I don’t know but I’m sure I would be interested in hearing a little from the Taliban/al Qaeda. Just maybe.

“Citing ‘national security’ concerns, prison officials ban Obama’s books.”

Oh please… Come up with another REAL reason than that lame excuse. Obama’s book is a bio of his life. You might as well as say to ban My Pet Goat that Bush was supposed to be reading [upside down] when the 9/11 attacks occurred. National security concerns for Obama’a book? No, they simply don’t want any books written by Obama to be read by the prisoners regardless if Obama written a cookbook. This smells personal and political reasons.
