Former Bush ‘domestic policy czar’ Karl Rove now rips czars as a ‘giant expansion of presidential power.’

Today on Twitter, former Bush White House adviser Karl Rove responded to questions posed by CopyChaser asking “@KarlRove What’s going on with all the czars? Is Obama’s strategy to change the engine of our success as a nation: freedom & capitalism?” and “@KarlRove And do we need both a ‘green’ czar and a ‘climate’ czar?” In response, Rove had this to say:

rovetweetweb

It is surprising that Rove finds the appointment of czars to be “a giant expansion of presidential power” because he actually served as the “domestic policy czar” in the Bush White House. In fact, President Bush himself appointed numerous czars in order to deal with various public crises and controversies, including a “cybersecurity czar,” “regulatory czar,” “AIDS czar,” “bird-flu czar” and “Katrina czar.” Moreover, Rove’s criticism of Obama is ironic, given his role in an administration that was marked by the expansion of executive power.

    A bird-flu czar? Really?

And since when did the Bush administration do policy?

And since when did Rove do anything that wasn’t politics?

BTW, I think they should just change the term “czar” to “coordinator.” Not to mention “homeland” to “domestic.”

These “czars” are not an expansion of the president’s powers. However, Rove and the rest of the White House advisers to Bush argued that the president’s powers as commander in chief trumped the Bill of Rights and he could suspend liberties of US citizens for national security reasons. This is part of what John Yoo claimed in the controversial memos. These memos were withdrawn just before Bush left office because he knew that these memos were flawed in their legal reasoning. In fact, the claims of power have been repudiated by various Supreme Court cases on presidential power. The whole foundation for some of Bush’s security plans were based on this flawed reasoning which lead to torture and unlawful detainment of US citizens. Bush, Cheney and a few others should be tried for subverting the Constitution.

The most cynical view woukd be that politics is all about power. And power yields money. It becomes an obsessive lust. I am sure this happens to one degree or another across the political spectrum, but Republicans have excelled at win at any cost politics. Truth no longer has any meaning. For example, they manipulate persons of faith hoodwinking them into believing they will do something about their honestly held beliefs. In this these hypocritical Republicans are worse for the religious people in achieving those goals, than if they had done nothing. Take the abortion issue, Republicans have pandered to the religious right on this issue ever since Roe V. Wade, but they have done nothing they claimed they woulddo related to abortion. The right manipulated these people on this issue, never intending to do anything. There are many examples of the right manipulating issues to gain power, gun control is another example. If you think Republicans give a damn about gun control, other than being able to manipulate people for power, you are mistaken. Rove should be recognize as master of this type of political manipulation, he did not invent it, but he perfected it.

  68. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    Mr. Rove,

Perhaps you forget that it was your party that created the first “czar” position in American government.

From the ever-popular Wikipedia (though I’m sure it can be confirmed elsewhere):

Drug Czar is an informal name for the person who directs drug-control policies in the United States. The ‘czar’ title was first used to refer to an appointed government official in a Time Magazine article in December 1973, referring to William E. Simon’s appointment as the head of the Federal Energy Administration.[1] The ‘drug czar’ title was first published in a 1982 news story quoting Joe Biden by United Press International which reported that “Senators… voted 62-34 to establish a ‘drug czar’ who would have overall responsibility for U.S. drug policy.”[2] Since then, several ad hoc executive positions in both the United States and United Kingdom have been established which have been subsequently referred to in this manner.

It will come when all the dirty is told. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

No it won’t – needs to be using his historic victory and the widespread support he and a more progressive agenda has had to start counteracting the noise machine NOW!

It isn’t just going to suddenly happen in congress, in fact, every time he capitulates to the repugs and blue dogs, he plays into their plans to portray his administration as a FAILURE.

He will get NOTHING from bipartisan efforts and watering down progressive ideas to the point where they no longer create meaingful change just empowers the repugs to say, “SEE, WE TOLD YOU SO!”

The economy may be a problem into the midterm and even an issue in 2012. He needs some successes to point to and not making clear, bold statements now makes this less and less likely.

  70. Another Joe says:

Rove knows he can get away with this because:

    1. He has not been held accountable for anything yet and the latest dog and pony show of his talking committee must have him believing this is behind him.

    2. Obama is actually following chimpy’s path on torture, detainees, signing statements, secrecy, and is even threatening to veto a bill to hold the CIA accountable because it constantly (and admittedly) lies to congress.

    3. From what he has seen, he can see that he has a “get out of jail free card” courtesy of the dems and the administration.

I understand why the lying liars lie and why the criminal cabal behind dur chimpfurher loots the federal treasury.

Me and a large number of progressives will not accept and support the DEMS empowering all of this.

    Off Topic Alert:

We’ve just been informed that Bill Moyers, on his show later tonight, will expose for the first time the health insurance industry’s secret campaign against Michael Moore and his film, “Sicko.” It contains a stunning revelation and admission by a top health insurance executive — the former head of publicity for CIGNA, one of the top health insurance companies in the country — that the disinformation and attacks on Michael and the film were extensive and well-planned. Their job was to stop the movie from reaching a wide audience (and, more importantly, from having the widespread political impact the industry feared “Sicko” would have).

Wendell Potter, former Head of Corporate Communications at CIGNA (which provides health insurance to nearly 70 percent of the Fortune 100 companies) admits that, in fact, “Sicko” “hit the nail on the head” and told the real truth about how much better people in other countries have it when it comes to their health care.

The show airs tonight at 9:00 PM on PBS. (Check your local listings for exact times. Many areas show it on Saturday night, too.)

It is my opinion the corporate powers that be have more control than the average American can grasp. They share monetary interests in defense, insurance, Big Pharma, media….The media will not sensationalize an interest close to America = public health care. I can not find one poll thru the media asking about health care. Those in Congress not interested in a public health plan are those that take money from insurance corp.

Again, in my opinion, the media controls another interest = defense. Such hype was for ratings, yes, but maybe also to keep the war money machine going. It was the invasion of Iraq when I canceled my cable… could no longer sucome to the propaganda.

As compared to a couple of decades ago, too many lives are filled with despair over health care, debt from credit cards, loss of jobs, less unions,…also, in my opinion, the quality of food by the giant corps has created an obese unhealthy America leading to a prescription drugged America.

If we could ever vote in campaign finance reform we could reverse some of this and put the power where it belongs. But no, our best Congress money can buy vote special interest.

Also people need to learn how to cook healthy food from scratch, give up TV, stay away from credit cards to gain control over the corporate powers that be.

To make sure this bs won’t happen again.

Unfortunately, this has happened twice where presidents have claimed extraordinary powers. The first was Nixon who made specious claims that the President can do anything he wants and it is not breaking the law. This was rejected by Nixon’s impeachment. That did not stop Bush from reasserting these claims under the guise of national security.

Can this happen again? Of course, it will happen again during the time of national crisis. There have been many times presidents have dealt with a national crisis but only Nixon and Bush have ever argued extreme broad powers. Lincoln and Roosevelt could have claimed more powers but did not because they had respect for the Constitution. The Congress passed laws after Nixon but that did not stop the Bush abuses of power. There is no guarantee that another president will not claim the powers.

  88. mari2RR says:

I just love it when the criminals make these flowery speeches. Rove is the last person who needs to comment on honest government since he was right in the center of the most illegal administration in our history. In fact, Bush’s Vice President was totally in charge of the government all those years. It is not that I excuse Bush, but I do think he was so unprepared to be President that he just signed off on all of Cheney’s illegal activities. How sad that the Bush Administration will go down in history as the most corrupt in our country’s history. In fact, when it all unravels, their conduct will read like the activites of some third word junta that stole the functi0ning government of their country and totally distorted the rules of the constitution.

Giving them a “free pass” is being complicit with the treason, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. The precedence of international law is clear – those that cover up or go along with these crimes are also guilty of them.

  90. Razor_Boy says:

Obama knows that if he changes the title ‘Czar’ to ‘coordinator’ and ‘Homeland’ to ‘domestic’ then the wacko Right would accuse him of being weak on security.

  91. Perry logan says:

Karl’s comments suggest not so much hypocrisy as acute psychological dissociation.

Keep in mind that the right have just been rendered politically impotent. To a group of people who would murder their own mothers to get into power, this constitutes a major trauma.

Unable to deal with their political impotence, the right have switched personalities. The symptoms are massive memory loss and a complete personality change.

These are the hallmarks of dissociative personality disorder, and it is ubiquitous among wingnuts today.

Everywhere you look, you find that last week’s fascists are today’s libertarians. Look at the teabaggers. I’m quite certain that the average Republican has forgotten the Bush II Administration ever happened. It’s as if massive amounts of brain tissue have been removed…and now it was all Bill Clinton’s fault.

If the Repubs ever get back into power, their memories will return and they will revert to facism again.

The “darned if he can figure sh!t out” part is right.

  93. Another Joe says:

Perry, interesting persepctive – is it also not true that, at its core, the republican party (which evolved from scandal-ridden WHIG party of the 1800s that was so corrupt it could not remain viable) has always been about:

    1. Creating and maintaining a dislike of government, to the point of irrational hate,

    2. Channeling that hate to disconnect people from government except for supporting those that complain it is evil.

    3. Using the government to enrich a few key insiders, constantly gorging at the public trough.

    4. Telling the others that government is evil and should “wither away” and be “drowned in the bathtub.

Its a very sophisticated scam really where a few steal from the many and then use the dysfunctional government that they create to convince some voters that ALL government is inherently evil.

The point I am trying to make is this – when we talk about the repugs we need to acknowledge that for a few of them, the hypocracy of their rhetoric is PROFITABLE BEYOND AVARICE.

And it takes an awful lot of propaganda to get the rest of them on board – the repug/neocon agenda goes directly against most of the population’s best interest.

  94. Whenwillthisnightmareend says:

Since when does a gay bashing homo freak make news by being a hypocrite. Why does anyone care what this piece of crap have to say.

  95. Another Joe says:

Whenwillthis nightmareend – I agree, but would add, the real topic needs to be why obama and dems have “stood down” and not held anyone accountable.

What rove says is meant to inflame – he could have been held accountable for his actions (as could many in dur chimpfurher’s administration).

The news isn’t that crooks steal – ITS THAT LAW ENFORCEMENT LOOKS THE OTHER WAY!

How come “yes we can” became “no we can’t” within the first 100 days – rhetoric about transparency, cleaning up government, and protecting our rights as “our values” have all been thrown under the bus.

  96. Another Joe says:

    Speaking of war crimes:

Report: Bush admin. skirted probe of mass Afghan slayings

When CIA-backed Afghan warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum had up to ’several thousand’ Taliban prisoners sealed and suffocated to death in metal shipping containers just days after the United States invaded the country, it did not go unnoticed by the White House.

They simply chose not to do anything about it and quietly worked to discourage efforts to uncover the truth, according to a late Friday report by The New York Times.

This is all being done in YOUR name and funded with YOUR tax dollars (and via other criminal enterprises a-la Iran/Contra).

Failure to hold these folks accountable makes those that refuse to do so accomplishes to said war crimes.

  97. Witch1 says:

Good Morning Jo and all,..The question’s always asked is why are the dem’s so spineless and allowing all this corruption to continue…Easy answer, they are in on it…With the exception of a few like Kucinich…Right now can’t think of any one in the “few” group but there must be some, at least I hope…

The fact the President Obama is doing just what I thought he would do so soon after the election is what suprises me….Thought we would have a few good change’s first…He has baught into all of bull shit bush’s bad polacies and the war along with installing reich wingers in key position’s or left much of the old guard in place…

rove is part of the most evil and corrupt, the fact he is allowed all the privledge of a protected felon, run’s his mouth and has all the freedom of a king is no suprise to me…He do’s not even have to go under oath, what the hell is that all about.? My answer, it’s all a scam…They dem’s and all play a verbal game and act like they are doing something when in full bold faced lie’s they are doing nothing but continue their little sherade of ripping us off and using flowery speeches to keep us fed little snippet;s of hope they will do their job….Oh a few will do some good localy maybe, but over all they are all 2 sides of the same coin….

We were sold a brand with Obama, the media and big business decided it was time to put a black man in power to capture all the middle age vote’s from those of us that faught so hard during the civil right’s years…Never mind we are the same bunch that are Peace activest and helped stop the Nam genocide…The war issue is not valed enough and the present young voter’s were easy to sway and capture with the flowery hopeful speeche’s…All it took was having an intelligent speeker with a nice looking family and then allow or help mcnut’s implode with the wacko palin and the plan was complete…

I know people will be critical of my post’s, claiming I am not giving President Obama a chance or it took 8 years to get here and it’s only been months he’s been in office but the fact’s remain, we are still at war and supporting 4 at present, that’s billions in tax money…Nothing is being done about holding any one accountable, in fact the present administration is going out of it’s way to block any investigation’s…They are still going to hold people even if they were pardoned..No accountability with the bulging banker’s or them recieving more fund’s, well Yah! who’s the President’s go to bank guy.? Geitner the insider when the problem’s were created….Who’s the go to guy for stopping Israel and it’s funded by us madness.? rahm…..Who are all the other’s in charge,? right leaning centerest looking out for their own self interest and to hell with all of us….

If the public want’s real change we must look to the next presidental and pick a man like Kucinich or maybe a Mckenna in the green party..There will be no change for the good here…President Obama is well aware of the law and yet he continues with the bush executive privledge and ignoring full steam ahead anything constitutional…

We the people are being held captive at the will of the political partie’s while they play out their little kabuki play on word’s and pretend banter to keep them all relevent…No longer are we the home of the free or brave..How brave can unemployed media fed people be when there is no justice just point’s of. political posturing..Stalling and running out the clock to the next election and more promises is all that will happen…

Please forgive all the error’s, hammer away and be critical all you please, these are just my opinion’s and no I don’t get paid for my post’s and am not a troll just a realety based thinker….P. B & J….Please forgive the length..

  98. pags2 says:

The president has no inherent powers to criminally prosecute because that is in the purview of the AG. The report that came out yesterday is indicative of an investigation. That does not mean it is the only investigation. There may be matters that are not completed and then the AG has to choose whether to prosecute. The report will be sent to Congress for its consideration with the appropriate committees. It is too early to say if anyone will be charge. The fact that it was made public may ultimate lead to hearings in Congress which may order the prosecution.

  99. morris1234 says:

Karl Rove is an ignorant moron who only looks at the faults of others when he should take a look at himself and realize what a scheming and lying Ahole that he is. The best description of George Walker Bush and Karl Rove is “Dumb and Dumber” or for George Walker Bush, Dick Cheney and Karl Rove is the “Three Stooges.”

  100. dbadass says:

yes yes it is and I am glad it is watching me. If you have nothing to hide why should you fear your ISP?

  101. morris1234 says:

Karl Rove will have to yet go before Congress over his involvement on sending former Governor of Alabama Don Siegelman to prison on lies that Karl Rove helped to cook up. What needs to happen is that Karl Rove needs to have a warrant issued for his arrest as he thinks that he is above the law by him ignoring this matter. He needs to be arrested, hauled back to Washington in Leg Irons and Hand Cuffs. They as well need to put him on a Lie Detector and get the truth out of him about his involvement and the next step will be a court case and then sentencing to prison for the rest of his life.

  102. pags2 says:

I think waterboarding Rove would be much more gratifying.

  103. morris1234 says:

I would agree with you pags2 as Rove should be water boarded on all matters he was involved in. They could get enough evidence against him from water boarding him to put him in prison for a 150 years, though he would be long dead before that. He is a scumbag just Bernard Madoff, who was sentenced to 150 years in prison and there isn’t much difference between them as they are both scheming liars.
