The Military’s ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Policy On Racism And Extremism

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a nonprofit that tracks racist and right-wing militia groups, sent a letter to congressional leaders today revealing the “threat posed by racial extremists who may be serving in the military”:

Evidence continues to mount that current Pentagon policies are inadequate to prevent racial extremists from joining and serving in the armed forces. In recent months, we have found dozens of personal profiles listing “military” as an occupation on a neo-Nazi website. Because the presence of extremists in the armed forces is a serious threat to the safety of the American public, we believe Congressional action is warranted.

Approximately 40 profiles on newsaxon.org — “a racist version of Facebook run by the National Socialist Movement” — show a disturbing number of Nazi and Confederate flags, white supremacist language, and identification as active duty members of the U.S. military. One hundred thirty members out of a total 7,906 users list their job as “military.” Member “geisler,” for example, identifies himself as a “human resources specialist” in the Army and says he wants to “find a woman I can settle down with and have a nice, WHITE family (unlike some in the army with all the race traitors).” Among his hobbies is “to further the preservation and existence of our race”:

63650_79133912

The problem of white supremacists in the military started gaining attention a few years ago, when recruiting shortfalls caused by the Iraq war allowed “large numbers of neo-Nazis and skinhead extremists” to sign up. A Defense Department investigator admitted, “We’ve got Aryan Nations graffiti in Baghdad. That’s a problem.” Similarly, in 2008, the FBI issued this report:

Sensitive and reliable source reporting indicates supremacist leaders are encouraging followers who lack documented histories of neo-Nazi activity and overt racist insignia such as tattoos to infiltrate the military as “ghost skins,” in order to recruit and receive training for the benefit of the extremist movement.

The Bush administration ignored the problem. The SPLC called on then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to appoint a task force to study the issue and more strictly enforce zero-tolerance. Under Secretary David Chu refused to take action, saying that the military was already doing enough. But in a 2005 report for the Defense Department, investigators found that officials were basically turning a blind eye to the problem:

Additionally, as seen in Appendix A, the relatively larger number of message board postings warning new recruits from revealing their extremist group associations exemplifies the presence of both military policy and action to disallow such activities in the Armed Forces. Effectively, the military has a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy pertaining to extremism. If individuals can perform satisfactorily, without making their extremist opinions overt through words or actions that violate policy, reflect poorly on the Armed Forces, or disrupt the effectiveness and order of their units, they are likely to be able to complete their contracts.

Of course, the right wing was apoplectic over the recent Department of Homeland Security report that warned extremists may “attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans.” This doesn’t mean that all members of the military are racist or likely to sign up with extremist groups. But with more than 12,500 valuable service members discharged since 1994 for nothing more than their sexual orientation, it seems that the military is kicking out the wrong people.

Disturbing & extremely frightening. But it certainly shows where some of the home-grown radical right wing extremists come from. And the Repubs screeched about the DHS report? Apparently Repubs are either lying to themselves about this problem, or think it’s perfectly acceptable to train/reduit home-grown terrorists.

Unfortunately, our troops are being asked to “serve” our nation by participating in an illegal war of conquest that was initiated based on lies. They are being asked to participate in war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The use of depleted uranium weapons is a war crime. The wholesale slaughter of a million or more innocent people, mostly women and children is a war crime – even if the military refers to it as “collateral damage”.

Of all the issues here, I cannot understand why some want to make DADT the lead issue.

I don’t know why anyone is surprised that they accept racists and extremists – the US military is being used to illegally kill people of color.

I’m sorry guys, but “supporting our troops” means focusing on bigger issues than this and it demands holding BOTH repugs and dems accountable.

His second? Telling Congress he’ll veto the House Intelligence authorization bill if they include a provision expanding secret congressional briefings to include the full intelligence committees from the current “Gang of 8? congressmembers now.

So just what has this man actually done to deliver the “change” he ran on and justify the slogan “yes we can”

If this kind of b.s. isn’t stopped, and that includes allowing people with felonies to sign up, our vaunted “voluntary” military forces will be comprised of more and more violent and anti-social people and may even wind up outnumbering the truly sane and dedicated. Not only is this a dangerous situation in a war zone, with atrocities committed against innocent civilians, but also a danger to US. These are the same folks that might eventually be brought in to “help” in national emergencies. And of course, the frosting on the cake is kicking gay people out of the military because of their sexual identity, but allowing the truly insane to “serve.”

Barack McNamara Obama: Why Can’t Obama See His Wars Are Unwinnable?

PORTLAND, OREGON–Robert McNamara, one of the “best and the brightest” technocrats behind the escalation of the Vietnam War, eventually came to regret his actions. But his public contrition, which included a book and a series of interviews for the documentary “The Fog of War,” were greeted with derision.

“Mr. McNamara must not escape the lasting moral condemnation of his countrymen,” editorialized The New York Times in 1995. “Surely he must in every quiet and prosperous moment hear the ceaseless whispers of those poor boys in the infantry, dying in the tall grass, platoon by platoon, for no purpose. What he took from them cannot be repaid by prime-time apology and stale tears, three decades late.”

I am all for talking about DADT and accepting racists and extremists into the military AFTER we end the illegal wars. A dialog about this does need to include the rhetoric of politicians, their actions, and holding them accountable.

-Prejudiced against helping the sick & poor

The fastest growing poverty group in the country is single women with children – single mothers.

U.S. government spends $281B/yr on single mothers.
Most recent government report shows that 40% of the births in the country are to unwed women. These children are born out of wedlock.
For the purposes of this post call the above numbers the cost of encouraging men to be irresponsible. Nonetheless, who can say what a horrific burden these mothers and their children have to bear?

What are the democrats doing to stop this horrific cost?

Is if fair to make taxpayers support the financial burden that incurred by irresponsible men? Isn’t that a justice issue? Those who are responsible about raising their offspring are force to pay for those who are completely irresponsible. Where is the justice in that? This is what OK Legislator Kern was talking about when she talks about irresponsible sexual behavior bankrupting the country.

This is, in my opinion, a very dangerous moment for the USA. With the ‘evangelization’ of so much of the military hierarchy, coupled with the ‘great man theory’ of governance held by Christian conservatives in office and in power, we could be on the edge of a real crisis. (See the thesis behind the “C Street Family” [Jeff Sharlet's book details]: they believe Christianity really means “Power to the Powerful” and admire Hitler, Stalin and Mao as leader. C Streeters include Ensign, Coburn, Sanford, et al.]

Thanks for posting this. I saw the author interviewed by Maddow last night. It made my head spin. I am a (non-church attending) Christian, and the attitude and teachings of “The Family” is the complete opposite of Christianity. If it were simply a limited cult following, that would be one thing. But the fact that government leaders we elect are following that belief system is truly frightening. Put the word opposite/against (anti) plus Christ together and you’ve got a pretty good idea where I’m coming from on this. Another important teaching is “by their fruits shall ye know them.” When people claim to be great Christians, but then violate their own self-proclaimed moral system or deny care and concern for others, including unjustified war and torture, there’s a major problem…and that is, that so many fundamentalists actually believe what they say and do is RIGHT. They begin proclaiming, for instance, GW as right in all he did, just because he also claimed to be a born-again Christian.” They begin to justify infidelity, bribery, graft, lying, and torture because those who participate or instigate and support such practices call themselves “born-again Christians.”

Whining about people you don’t agree with because they have the audacity to support your candidates but also want to hold them accountable.

Say what you want – there are many here and across the country that agree. There are some who don’t agree.

This results is a dialog of different viewpoints in a public forum. In this case, between people that probably agree on many issues and work to support the same candidates.

Some don’t want to hold those folks accountable, some do. Probably in 2010 and 2012 – the elections will be swung by the folks that hold candidates accountable.

But natter on about how awful it is that anyone even think that the standards that we apply to repugs should apply to dems. It will not be a “winning” proposition when elections come around.

But if it makes you feel good today – knock yourself out.

  87. Another Joe says:

I don’t see anyone blaming obama for congress being slow to act. I do see people express concerns about:

*Illegal wars and questions if we are actually disengaging.

*A total abandonment of the “transparency” he ran on, including directly backing chimpy and cheney withholding public documents.

*Paying lip service to torture but stonewalling us about what happened which, in turn, makes it impossible to hold anyone accountable. This can be construed as complicity – no excuse sweeping war crimes and crimes against humanity under the rug.

*Biden admits the stimulus package “assumed” things that were wrong and it will not do what we were promised. It was watered down in the name of bipartisenship.

*Even though he promised to end SIGNING STATEMENTS, he is issueing them.

When obama sold us out on FISA, directly contradicting promises he made when soliciting money to launch his campaign, may of us were willing to support him anyhow.

We did learn that he needs to be watched. Like every other politician, needs to be held accountable.

This isn’t about whether congress is moving – this is about the integrity of our elected officials.

    Sharky Says:

Why are Italains, Greeks and others called “white” when many of them are the same color and bloodline as Hispanics?

Hispanics refer to the culture and people of a country formerly ruled by Spain. The majority of whom have Spanish ancestry and speak Spanish. Primarily Mexico, Central and South America and the Great Antilles (Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico). In most cases, the European Spanish interbred with the indigenous natives of each area. This obviously doesn’t apply to Italians or Greeks, etc. They certainly don’t share the same bloodline as Hispanics. And color? All your statement reveals is an absolutely abysmal knowledge of history.

    winddancer,
Many Hispanics in Latin America are of Pure Spanish or even Italian origin. Get educated about that. Also even if someone is of mixed blood, in the Latin Countries if they look Euro Spanish they are considered that. It is only in the Racist American one blood drop rule that doesn’t do that.

Also if people in the Latin Countries are of mixed blod, they still have Spaniard in them, which is the same bloodline as Italians. So your ignorance is very obvious.

An Italian has more in common with a Mexican or Cuban than he does with the Dutch. That is why more Italians moved to Latin America (Argentina) than America. They were more more at home there.

I know, I’m Italo-Argentine and embrace, Mexicans, Bolivians, Cubans and others as my Latin brothers. Your racism will never divide us.

    Between 150,000 and 800,000 Italian-Chileans.

The US military has been so screwed by religion and politics it is barely recognizable. They allowed gang members in, because they needed warm bodies. They allow these gangs to flourish. And what they didn’t know about violence and organization when they came in, the military has given them lessons. When these gang members get out, what do you suppose they will take back to our streets?

They have allow religion to infiltrate at the highest level. Coercing soldiers to “get right with God.” Some of their units even have flags with a religious theme. And as the article said, “they are kicking out the wrong people.”

I don’t want to be living in this country when the armed and military trained gangs take over the streets. Our police won’t be able to protect us. I can see a scenario of our military coming back to fight the very people they trained. Can you say anarchy?
