GOP Responds To Cheney’s Concealment Of CIA Program With Strawmen And Shrugged Shoulders

Earlier this week, seven House Democrats on the Intelligence Committee released a letter revealing that CIA Director Leon Panetta had “recently testified to Congress that the agency concealed information and misled lawmakers repeatedly since 2001″ about an unidentified CIA operation that was an “on-again, off-again” effort until Panetta stopped it in June. The New York Times reports today that former Vice President Dick Cheney gave “direct orders” for the program to be concealed from Congress.

On the Sunday shows this morning, several Republican lawmakers attempted to defend or divert attention away from the revelation about Cheney. “I don’t think we should be jumping to any conclusions,” said Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-AZ) on ABC’s This Week. Kyl claimed that Cheney’s alleged actions were “not out of the ordinary”:

STEPHANOPOULOS: But this allegation of the vice president ordering it be kept secret, you believe that should be investigated?

KYL: Look, the president and the vice president are the two people who have responsibility, ultimately, for the national security of the country. It is not out of the ordinary for the vice president to be involved in an issue like this.

STEPHANOPOULOS: But to order it be kept secret?

KYL: What if it’s a top secret program? Of course he and the president would both be responsible for that. Let’s don’t jump to conclusions is what I’m saying.

On Fox News Sunday, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) said that while he agrees that “the CIA should brief the Congress,” any mention of Cheney is just the Obama administration trying to “blame the Bush-Cheney administration” for everything. Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that he doesn’t “know whether it was appropriate,” but dismissed the concern by saying, “the CIA is in the secrecy business.”

Also on CNN, Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH) said that it “is wrong if somebody told the CIA not to inform the appropriate members of Congress,” but tried to cast the debate as an “attempt” by Democrats “to basically undermine the capacity to protect and develop intelligence.” Watch it:

On NBC’s Meet The Press, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said he doesn’t “know what the details of this are” and that Cheney “should obviously be heard from if the accusations are leveled in his direction.” “If I know Washington, this is the beginning of a pretty involved and detailed story,” said McCain, adding that he doesn’t know if there should be “a, quote, investigation.”

Update On Face The Nation today, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) defended Cheney, saying that "some of the Intelligence Committee people are pushing back on those stories. "I don't know what the facts are. But I believe that Vice President Cheney served his country with as much fidelity as he could possibly give to it. And he tried to serve us in an effective way. And I hope that nothing like this would impact on his outstanding record," said Sessions.

What’s worse in the eyes of the GOP, A democratic president getting a BJ (because he can) or a republican administration undermining the Constitution and violating duly enacted LAWS (because they let them). INVESTIGATE these CRIMES before the GOP gets in power again.

Why should we jump to conclusions? Just because Cheney is a worthless lying war criminal? Why should we jump to conclusions? Just because Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld and the Republicans gave us eight years of torture, treason and tyranny?

Hell they do that even if a Democrat did nothing ( which is unfortunately, usually the case on the Democrat side, they do nothing but cash lobbyist checks and worry about getting Republicans mad at them )

  11. Virtual Pebble says:

What, us worry? Just us chickenhawks here, subverting everything to move forward to a glorious new day of redbaiting rePublican fascism. And apart from that, no comment, it’s all secret; sez so right here in Darth Cheney’s memo from his well known undisclosed location…

  12. Another Joe says:

This is why the Obama administrations and dems need to hold these folks accountable, enabling Americans to see the what this party stands for.

Their “gee, sh!t happens” response is not going to fly, so we need to make them get out and constantly justify and/or excuse it.

I think you would have too be extremely naive to think the GOOPers would recognize the total wrongness of this whole affair. Having said that if Obama tried such a despicable thing there would be no problem with a full throated cry for his head

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said he doesn’t “know what the details of this are” and that Cheney “should obviously be heard from if the accusations are leveled in his direction.”

What? I don’t think the guy has shut his mouth for 5 seconds since they took his key to the CIA men’s room. Cheney knew this was coming (even if the leap-before-you-look crowd doesn’t think it came fast enough), and he’s been spinning ever since, along with his whelp. We’ve heard from Cheney, now it’s time to hear some facts

  17. RUCeriousMaggot! says:

    How bizarre.

Since the program took place under Bush/Cheney, and apparently Cheney ordered the program to be kept secret, exactly how are we supposed to refer to him?

Voldemort? He Who Must Not Be Named…?

  19. The Moderate Squad says:

And Another Joe – everyone already knows what you “think.”

  20. linkwray says:

Why is this surprising anymore? What we have is a total violation of our rights to privacy, our rights to due process, our rights to just about anything except to shut up and go shopping. This is not a party issue because elected officials are saying that 10-20 million U.S. citizens could be locked up for no apparent reason other than they are ” a potential problem.” To whom? The well-oiled gov’t paranoia machine? To the machinations of the police state using martial law and trumped charges to carry out their dirty work? Inquiring minds want to know befor they’re disappeared into some deep, dark hole-in-the-ground in southern Utah.

  21. majii says:

Typical republican BS. None of them have what it takes to support an investigation into Bushco. They know it is needed but are too chickensh!t to admit it. Their game plan is to continue to restate the CIA’s right to secrecy for purposes of national security and blame the dems for playing partisan politics. They live in an alternate reality in which they sell themselves as the keepers of morality and Christianity-pushers until it is time to publicly embrace these values. If McCain, Gregg, Kyl, and Cornyn have mastered anything during their political careers, it is the art of how to lie while keeping a straight face. It makes me wonder how much time they spend asking God for forgiveness. Time that could be used on working to solve our problems if they stopped lying about everything.

And they wonder why many Americans label them as hypocrites!

Here’s what I find so interesting about the GNOP’s Excusa-palooza: They were in charge! Cheney didn’t trust them with this information! The Dems didn’t become the majority in Congress until 2007, so Cheney chose not to include his own party leaders in what he was doing!

And they’re not even smart enough to realize just how much they were dissed by that criminal administration.

Can’t wait to see the information begin its inevitable trickle, trickle, trickle with respect to Cheney and his assassination squads.

… Is Cornin calling Feinstein a liar?
… Is Cornin calling Pannetta a liar?
… Because we all know he called Pelosi a liar.

Does Cornin think that the law does NOT matter?
Does Cornin think the Senate is subordinate to an Administration?

If this man was elected to “support and defend the Constitution of the USA…” he better START supporting the tenets of the law for which he was elected to do and STOP placating the notion that a President and his Vice President are above the law and that a well informed Senate is too much to ask for.

Either: Internal numbers and feedback indicated that liz was not going to be effective as a propaganda tool – she has no credibility or expertise to be talking about anything on a national or international level

Or: Their goal was to get out in front of this, “catapult some propaganda” and then slither away so as to appear unconcerned and above the fray.

Excuse me, only the President has the legal responsibility to make these decisions. I believe it to be an extraordinary first in this country’s history to have a Vice President assume so much control from the President.

One possibility is they discovered that George Bush was so incompetent to be President that Cheney had to step in. If this is the case, the public should have made the selection for President, not Cheney and the Republican Party. I swear this sounds too much like the Reagan scenario in the 80’s.

    Who was running the country?

  51. Another Joe says:

Rich – the death of the woman that files lawsuit against bush is well documented in the mainstream media, but is officially being identified as a “suicide” – shotgun to head I believe (something women virtually NEVER do)

The DC Madam’s “suicide” certainly did save a lot of @ss in washington, and we are suppose to believe that she went to her mother’s house to do it – in the garage. Guess it was a family thing? /snark

Shortly before her death, she made specific statements that if she suddenly died, it would not be an accident or anything – it would be murder.

Then there is also the case of a cocaine/drug dealer that ended up in prison before 2000 – don’t rememember name nor details. Think he said was beaten and abused. I am sure this ran in Rolling Stones as a full-feature, some national publication. It is largely buried down the memory hole now, probably some intense googling would dig info up.

  57. DallasNE says:

Notice the defensiveness of every single Republican quoted here today. The next step will be to listen to Rush Limbaugh to see how to turn this around into attack mode. By the middle of next week the Republicans will be on the attack on this blaming Nancy Pelosi.

The Republicans should be happy overall. After all, this Cheney/CIA story knocked the John Ensign bribery story off the news cycle.

It’s gonna take years (more than 2 terms) to make a dent in chimpy’s rouge legacy.

  68. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    Game,
The indefinite detention policy Obama proposes is not about fixing dents. Nay, it’s a bigger dent! And that’s just a starter. How is this the right direction to start fixing dents? By underscoring the necessity to retain said dents?

Sure, it’s gonna take years to fix…
… But in two years, Obama will still be defending the necessity to keep that dent. And in four? Will he then have to backtrack and flip/flop on indefinite detention policy HE put in place?

Game of Life – no sh!t sherlock, not the point. Point is, he needs to provide real change to keep progressive/liberals working for him and giving him 100 percent support.

He can’t control many things, but what he advocates for he can. For example, the public overwhelmingly want universal coverage, they took single payor off the table, but many would be pleased with a public option. He needs to keep in front of this.

Allowing others to seek accountability for previous administration’s crimes might give him just enough political distance to stay above it, yet still differentiate himself from the repugs and maintain his progressive/liberal base.

He could quit issuing signing statements and writing “friend of the court” briefs to enable further coverup and block discovery.

These are the issues that will “buy him time”. It’s not about whether the mess will turn around in 4 or 8 years, its seizing the moment to also achieve what CAN be accomplished.

I’m guessing that this was probably first term which means, based on the law of averages, that it was Bill Clinton’s fault. Any transgressions after the 2004 elections will be assigned to prophetic visions of the coming Obama juggernaut, though also graded on the 2006 midterm curve.

    You should all be ashamed.

    Game,
The indefinite detention policy Obama proposes is not about fixing dents.

We don’t know what the last lying, corrupted admin has gotten us into. President Obama is making positive changes. He’s moving ahead. He hasn’t been allowed to fill his cabinet positions because of the teabaggers’ partisanship.

Remember chimpy did things lawlessly while President Obama is following the law.

I remember a few questions asked but our Law Makers fronted for the Bush Administration. Remember how the New York Times almost reported the news but was stopped. Now how many Law Makers stood up to the Bush Administration? Most folded like Speaker Pelosi and Feinstein. Reid was so far up the Bush/Cheney team I didn’t see him. Lieberman even kissed Bush so what’s that about. Look we have seen and read Evil Leaders who have sheep as followers and that’s what Cheney had as some were paid and others just wanted to be an insider. When we are represented by Law Makers who work for citizens of their State this wouldn’t happen. I mean these guys/girls are all over Obama like gravy on rice. Yes most are just angry but they all listening to what Obama is saying and watching what he does. Yes Obama is fast like that mouse but the GOP is doing it’s best to keep up.

Just because Congress was impotent does not make it acceptable for the Administration to take advantage of the situation and circumvent the Law.

  102. Max Anax junius -1 says:

  104. Another Joe says:

None of this is about giving obama more “time” and being “patient” – its about what he does NOW versus what he said as a candidate.

    * Significantly expand the reach and intensity of imperial violence (replete with the mass slaughter of civilians and the related escalation of targeted assassinations) in South Asia.

    * Promote a notorious assassin and death-squad leader (Lt. General Stanley A McChrystal – former chief of the military’s special Joint Special Operations Command) to the position of Commander of U.S. Forces in the newly merged “Af-Pak” war theater.

    * Sustain the criminal occupation of Iraq beneath rhetoric of withdrawal.

    * Increase “defense” (empire) spending, consistent with the following statement in a report issued by the leading Wall Street investment firm Morgan Stanley one day after Obama’s presidential election victory: “As we understand it, Obama has been advised and agrees that there is no peace dividend.”

    * Revive military commissions.

    * Continue the practice of renditions.

    * Maintain secret prisons for persons “held on a short-term, transitory basis.”

    * Continue the unspeakable torture of prisoners by an “extrajudicial terror squad” (Jeremy Scahill’s description of the Pentagon’s sadistic “Immediate Reaction Force” in Cuba) at Guantanamo Bay.

    * Advance the policy of “indefinite detention” (potentially permanent incarceration) for Guantanamo prisoners for whom no legally compelling evidence can be marshaled.

    * Intimidate [Britain] (with a threat to withhold intelligence data on potential terrorist attacks!) into preventing a Guantanamo victim from having his day in court on the Bush administration’s torture practices.

    * Sustain the Bush administration’s abrogation of habeas corpus rights in regard to the roughly 600 “enemy combatants” kept at the Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan (where people rendered out of other countries like Yemen and England can be considered “war [-zone]” prisoners!.

    * Advance nauseatingly specious legal and moral arguments (”better to look forward than backward”) to prevent serious federal investigation of the Bush administration’s human rights crimes.

    * Sustain George W. Bush’s domestic wiretapping program.

    * Invoke the “state secrets” (akin to the divine right of kings) doctrine to prevent disclosure of evidence in response to lawsuits emerging from Bush era rendition and surveillance policies.

    * Suppress photographic evidence of U.S. torture practices.

    * Justify all this and more in the name of the supposed “global war on terror” that was supposedly launched in legitimate defense against the supposedly unprovoked jetliner attacks of September 11, 2001.

    * Disregard qualified progressive defenders of civil liberties and human rights from consideration for appointment to succeed Supreme Justice David H. Souter and to thereby counter the hard right leanings of the court’s conservative majority.

    * Send clear signals of intent to roll back and partially privatize Social Security and Medicare benefits.

    * Betray campaign pledges to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to insert stronger labor and environmental protections.

    * Betray campaign pledges of serious intent to advance an elementary and overdue labor law reform (the Employee Free Choice Act).

    * Force and approve an automobile industry re-structuring that drastically cuts domestic autoworkers’ jobs, wages and benefits while subsidizing General Motors’ further shifting of jobs abroad.

    * Advance a tepid, business-friendly health care “reform” that leaves the leading parasitic insurance corporations (major campaign sponsors of his) in power.

    * “Methodically erase single-payer advocates from the picture” (Glen Ford) of health care reform despite the fact that a majority of Americans have long favored a single-payer (”Medicare for all”) health insurance system.

    * Spend trillions of federal dollars on taxpayer handouts to giant Wall Street firms who spent millions on his campaign and who drove the economy over the cliff. Obama’s Wall Street bailout rejects the elementary bank nationalizations and public financial restructuring that are required to put the nation’s credit system on a sound and socially responsible basis, choosing instead to guarantee the financial, insurance, and real estate industries’ toxic, hyper-inflated assets while keeping existing Wall Street management in place. It amounts to a giant effort to “keep perpetrators afloat” (liberal economist James Gailbraith) through a scheme in which the government takes more than 90 percent of the risk but private investors reap at least half the reward.

The only one who has affected Cheney’s record/”legacy” is Cheney himself, with all his negativity, hatred, & anti-Constitution garbage. Valid point, however, NONE of the candidates that the party got behind were going to fight for single payer – the few that even talked about it were mercilessly run out of the process!

That is not obama’s fault, I guess, but it does say something about the party and the process that systematically denied meaningful choices on a critical issue.

Choose to disagree if you wish, but progressives should have a right to talk about it freely. Single payer is the overwhelming choice among those that identify themselves liberal or progressive.

  139. pete says:

Some of us could stand to do some reading about the “preventive detention” flap. As I understand the formal proposal, which is still a first draft, it’s designed to form a process to adjudicate cases that don’t fit into existing frameworks. Specifically, it’s an attempt to adjudicate the botched cases inherited from Bushco without the legitimately dangerous option of releasing people who may very well be guilty.

A few other things to keep in mind are:

Appointees are still being blocked and Bushbots still infest the government which means that most anything initiated at this point will depend on political enemies for implementation. The “dog-work” of the government is still being carried out by Regent U grads. Obama is still assembling a new government and that, to me, should continue to be his very first priority.

Then there’s the fact that we are in a financial crises the likes of which most living people have never seen. It’s difficult to justify making long range plans when no one knows what the economy will be like in two months, much less two years. Frankly, I think it’s irresponsible to make long range commitments without the relevant data.

Thirdly. Obama has to temper his personal actions to avoid turning the radical right from hateful screech-monkeys into mass murdering insurrectionists.

And finally, the biggest weapon the Reichwhiners have doesn’t even garner a blip in the media. They still have control of the Supreme Court. Anything that can be seen as an edict from Obama can be challenged in court, and will likely be turned down by the Court if it’s not air-tight.

    I have 3 replies:

    1. Speculating that this is all “strategy” if you want, little evidence to support it giving the larger context of issues, but your perogative. Even if it were true, however, he still needs progressives keeping these issues on the radar for when the time is right to take action – thanks for not being insulting about this and accepting the views of other progressives.

    2. I would turn your point about the financial crisis around 180 degrees – this is precisely why he needs to differentiate himself from the repugs NOW and keep the largest block of his base intact. He will need us throughout this term and to win the next one. He and Michelle have acknowledged that.

    3. There is no evidence that not seeking change when he can justifiably claim a mandate and hoping that somehow prevents the shrill voices and SCOTUS challenges you refer to is not what we are seeing now or what we will see in the future. Assuming we can “play nice” with this crowd and get anything back in return is wishful thinking (being diplomatic about it)

    Who? ;)

  158. hanshiro the antlion says:

Personally, I’d prefer to stick to issues. Progressives benefit from passionate people, and yes, passions run high. That doesn’t mean anyone should be a doormat either.

That being said, the trend of calling motives into question, suggesting two or three or several profiles are fake, or predetermining someone’s intentions rather than answering the issues raised only detracts from tackling the issues.

  159. Another Joe says:

Just our of curiosity – does anyone know how to determine readability statistics?

There are several methods – I will challenge anyone to do this. Take some of the posts here, representing the comments of whomever you like.

Copy and paste them into word and then:

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Spelling & Grammar tab.

Select the Check grammar with spelling check box.

Select the Show readability statistics check box, and then click OK.

On the Standard toolbar (toolbar: A bar with buttons and options that you use to carry out commands. To display a toolbar, press ALT and then SHIFT+F10.), click Spelling and Grammar Button image.

You will see the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level

I personally, choose not to read anything that is below a middle school reading level, but read what you want.

Of course, you do not need a computer to recognize language on the order of:

See Dick run. Run Dick run. See Jane run. Run Jane run. See Dick and Jane. Dick and Jane run. Run Dick and Jane Run.

  160. Another Joe says:

hanshiro the antlion – They learn their lessons from rush and oliely well. But I would probably read what those two right because they at least know how to use the language.

Funny thing is, the crowd that writes at a 5th grade level doesn’t even get that others can see this.

  161. hanshiro the antlion says:

170.Another Joe Says: There are several methods – I will challenge anyone to do this. Take some of the posts here, representing the comments of whomever you like.

I have a Mac. That projects a native intelligence even without measures…

    ;-)

  162. dbadass says:

Sucks to be called out as a fake I suppose. It sort of calls into questions one’s judgement and intentions. Dodging falsehoods doesn’t make them go away.I prefer to discuss real issues with real people not pretenders and posers. See honesty and integrity are progressive values. Lying and pretending aren’t…

  163. pete says:

I usually only “flame” those who display a lack of logic and manners. But I must point out that I’ve never claimed to be a progressive or liberal. I am very much a moderate and I abhor extremism in any form. Though I have come to the conclusion that the GOP has been seized by extremists and the DNC has moved to the center. In fact. I can’t think of a prominent American “Leftist”.

    1. EVERYTHING in politics is a strategy. Some are good, some are bad, some are obvious, and some are never known.

    2. When I prioritize I start with emergencies and then work my way down the list. The best argument for that is the fact that human brains are designed that way. When one is being chased by a Sabertooth Tiger, for example, is a bad time to look for a new pigment for one’s next cave-painting.

    3. All I’m saying is that the Reich-wing control of the SCOTUS is a reality that must be included in any plans.

  164. dbadass says:

5th grade level? Please tell me pretend guy which matrix you are using. See the thing is I know how to assess grade level writing. Do you?

  165. Another Joe says:

You mean you get the readability stats via some innate harmony with your operating system? Great ;)

I wouldn’t judge anyone for spelling or grammar, but being able to organize a thought and present it in a straightforward way is a precursor to structuring a valid argument.

Those that can’t just attack and flame with the equivalent of:

“See Dick and Jane. See Dick run. Run Dick Run. See Jane run. Run Jane run.”

There is a reason that they don’t teach rhetoric to first graders.

  166. Another Joe says:

pete – didn’t mean to project and say you were either. If that is what you took from my post, I should be more careful.

Your points are all valid perspectives and I need to see them articulated the way you say them. Thanks for you understanding and willingness to share in a reasonable dialog.

Of course, the same guys who were braying and crying big tears about the sacred nature of “THE RULE OF LAW” in the 90’s have been shrugging their shoulders over and over ever since their guy was awarded the office in 2001. That’s just what you get from modern conservatives a huge, steaming pile of hypocrisy.

But, I’ve got to say, I don’t come around here very often so maybe I’m off-base here, but as I peruse the discussion, it does seem to me that the poster named “another Joe” is here to divert discussions into irrelevant and sometimes absurd discussions. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but when I sense that someone is running a game, I tend to mention it. If I’m wrong, sorry about that.

  172. Another Joe says:

My experience from earlier threads is that some here are no different than this crowd other than their vitriol hate for anyone that questions Obama and dem leadership:

Freepers refuse to apologize for calling Malia Obama ‘a typical street whore’

The popular conservative blog Free Republic is facing intensified scrutiny over its reader comments policy — and its role in the American political debate — after the blog’s moderators allowed vicious attacks on the Obamas’ 11-year-old daughter to remain on the site for more than a day.

These folks are just sick little monkeys whom I would never read. They will never change and bring nothing to the dialog. Perhaps some of them will someday grow up, perhaps not.

The good news is they marginalize and isolate themselves. They do so whether they are flaming those on the left or right.

    I disagree.

I’ve read several posts, many I agree with, some I don’t. There is, on the main, substance posted rather than just accusations or ad hom. Further, while Joe does make indirect comments, so too does a host of other posters.

Why do you single out Joe when dbadass has a running string of nonsense, uncomplicated by facts?

  175. Pachydiplax de St. Augustine says:

I haven’t been seeing any new birds, dbadass, but we officially have a new mosquito and the ash borers are spreading.

On a sad note, this year’s nest counts are showing a 20% decrease in nesting ducks. Could be drought. Could be climate change. Could be invasive species, Eurasian milfoil has invaded a lot of wetlands. Could be the recovery of goose and swans. Or it could be the better land management in the Dakotas. Some combination of those factors has resulted in a 50% drop in six years.

Someone enjoys the blog, likes to discuss and they’re targeted?

Notwithstanding the fact that several of the points Joe raised are ignored in favor of impugning someone’s intention?

    Please explain.

  182. Another Joe says:

Bradblog has a great post on a report from Newsweek about potential Holder investigation that goes on to note that Holder began reviewing the former administration’s torture policies “in April,” and “became increasingly troubled” as he did.

To connect a dot or two here, that would be around the same time — April 24th of this year — when Holder told anti-torture protesters, off mic, after a Congressional hearing at which he testified, that they would “be proud of [their] country” in response to their demands for investigation and prosecution of those policies.

Though we noted what protester David Swanson had reported as a “promise” at the time, few others took any notice of what we’d regarded as a very positive, if quiet, sign that he had intended to do the right thing here…

In a complex and well-coordinated heist, combining speed and stealth with an uncanny knowledge of automobile security systems, four tots hotwired a Toyota Land Rover and cruised along fabled Deco Drive in South Beach Miami. The merry group spent the evening crashing top night spots and easily eluding waitresses, bartenders and bouncers. Credit card receipts, obviously signed by one of the tots, showed thousands in charges for table dances, champagne and limo service. A crayon drawing left by one of the tots lent conclusive proof of their guilt, according to local law enforcement officials.

A trio of nuns broke into a North Dakota missile site in a complex and well-coordinated heist, combining speed and stealth with an uncanny knowledge of USAF security systems. The nuns quickly removed the nuclear warhead in 20 minutes from the ICBM using a crescent wrench, car jack and plastic crucifix. A nun’s habit and Gideon Bible, inscribed with the name of one of the nuns, providently found at the crime scene, indicated conclusive proof of their guilt and the trio was quickly captured.

A pair of elderly pensioners swiped two Abrams M1A1 tanks yesterday and crashed them into the Virginia state capitol after driving them 150 miles undetected. In a complex and well-coordinated heist, combining speed and stealth with an uncanny knowledge of US Army security systems, the senior citizens swiped the tanks from a National Guard armory. After crashing the tanks into the office building, the pair fled on foot, eluding hundreds of lawmen. But a dog-eared copy of National Geographic magazine, found at the crime scene addressed to one of the octogenarians, lead to the speedy arrest and confinement of the pair.

Six autistic kids, ranging in age from 12 to 19, broke into Fort Knox yesterday and looted billions in gold from the vaults in a daring daylight raid. The complex, well-coordinated heist, combining speed and stealth with an uncanny knowledge of the vault’s security system, allowed the kids easy entry. Video cameras, however, caught the six laughing and joking while entering the open vaults. Unfortunately for the plotters, an inscribed trophy from the 2001 Special Olympics, along with a group photograph of the six, was found at the crime site, foiling the perfect crime.

In a complex and well-coordinated heist, combining speed and stealth with an uncanny knowledge of nuclear submarine security systems, two teenage lovers who called themselves Romeo and Juliet, stole a Trident submarine yesterday and enjoyed a brief joyride before sinking the sub in a suicide pact in 10,000 feet of water. Although no bodies were recovered, a water-soaked library card found floating on the Pacific Ocean , belonging to Roy Meoli, age 17, confirmed to law enforcement officials that the troubled teenage boy was the sole mastermind of the daring heist.

A quintet of teenage girls swiped the space shuttle from its Florida launch pad and buzzed Disneyworld in Orlando yesterday afternoon. In a complex and well-coordinated heist, combining speed and stealth with an uncanny knowledge of the shuttle security system, the girls commandeered the aging spacecraft. Swooping low, they performed several complex aerobatics, then sped skyward. Flying above Seaworld, they paused to write the cell phone number of one of their boyfriends in bold, three hundred-foot letters in the sky. Local police traced the cell phone number and quickly apprehended the juveniles later at a slumber party, before charging them with the crime.

Several Saudi high school seniors commandeered the aircraft carrier USS Eisenhower yesterday in a complex and well-coordinated heist, combining speed and stealth with an uncanny knowledge of Navy security systems. The teens sailed the ship across the Pacific undetected and then down to Acapulco for a weekend of binge drinking, while picking up girls along the way. Navy officials had no prior knowledge of the plan to hijack the missing aircraft carrier, nor even knew it was missing. But officials found a charred credit card belonging to one of the thieves on the flight deck of the carrier proving, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the hijackers guilt.

A quartet of quadriplegics borrowed the SS Queen Mary yesterday and sailed the ship to San Diego in an elaborate navigational feat. The foursome commandeered the former luxury liner, usually berthed at Long Beach California , after attending a weeklong course in sailing. An instructor at Bob Bligh’s Sailing School said the handicapped hijackers failed the rudiments of sailing and navigation and nearly wrecked a rowboat. However, law enforcement officials quickly said that failure didn’t necessarily mean that four handicapped men, confined to wheelchairs, couldn’t have piloted a 1000 foot luxury liner usually requiring dozens of officers and hundreds of trained crewmen. As if to confirm this likely explanation, an FBI spokesman said investigators found promotional videotapes from Carnival Cruise Lines, a copy of the movie Titanic, and a Blockbuster membership card belonging to one of the men in the wheelhouse of the Queen Mary, confirming the obvious guilt of the four.

Nineteen flight school dropouts, in a complex and well-coordinated heist combining speed and stealth with an uncanny knowledge of our nation’s security systems, commandeered four jumbo jets and flew hundreds of miles before returning to crash the planes into pre-selected targets. A flight school instructor said the men performed badly in the simplest of flight maneuvers in small Cessna airplanes. But local law enforcement officials quickly claimed the 19 hijackers could easily have performed complex maneuvers in much larger and more complex Boeing jumbo jets. Video cameras captured the ringleaders laughing and joking and a charred passport, found at the scene of the crash indicated, beyond any reasonable doubt, the guilt of the men.

Can someone please tell me why farmers are always whining and looking for a handout? If it isn’t a drought or a flood, it’s their bad loans. I was always told farmers were strong, independent people who were too proud to accept help. But sure enough as soon as something goes wrong, they’re looking for the government to bail them out. And they’re the forst ones to complain about city people who live on welfare.
    F#ck the farmers.
They’re worrying about losing their land? It wasn’t their land to begin with, they stole it from the Indians. Let ‘em find out what it geels like to have your land taken away by some square-headed (explitive deleted) who just came over on a boat. They wiped out the bears, the wolves, and the mountain lions; they spoiled the land, poisoned the water table, and they produce tasteless food.
Why is it in this capitalistic society all businesses are expected to succeed or fail on their own except farming? Why is that?

The barracuda thing is wrong too. Barracuda, like other fish, travel in schools rather than “packs”. But, they only school when they are young. Adult barracuda are solitary hunters. On a humorous note, the Wiki entry says “These fish don’t care for their young“.

However, the most prophetic statement about the barracuda comes from an old California DNR pamphlet that says:

Barracuda attack from ambush. After one powerful run, they submit to the net“.

And I think that will be the historical footnote on Bible Spice. She struck out of nowhere, made one “powerful run” that lasted until the first time she opened her mouth following the Convention, and then “submitted to the net” when she quit her job due, apparently, to criticism in the blogosphere.

  244. Another Joe says:

Sarah Palin is unqualified. She is at a minimum intellectually incurious. She is unethical. And calling these things for what they are is not an anti-feminist act. Nor is Sarah Palin the individual the real issue.

This can be a delicate question because qualified, honorable women have so often been called unqualified and attacked for their ambition or assertiveness. But…c’mon. Sarah Palin’s lack of qualification for high elected office is so patently clear in just about every one of her public statements and actions over the past 10 months that to not call it out as such is offensive to women (and men) who have worked hard to develop knowledge and mastery of any skill or body of knowledge. Of course there are lines of brutal personal attack that should never be crossed. But it’s not productive either to nutpick or to try to establish equivalencies. The question here is whether it is legitimate to call out the lack of qualification of a female politician for the role to which she aspires, and the answer is a clear yes.

  248. Another Joe says:

Yesterday I wrote how reports are showing Tom Coburn counselling John Ensign to end his affair and hand over some hush money to his mistress Cindy Hampton. This story is developing quickly, though, so quickly that one expects everything to fall apart, and soon, for Senator John Ensign. We’ve got what appears to be payoffs ($96,000) in some sort of equavalence to small, unmarked bills, from Ensign’s parents. And though those payments seem seem legal, strictly speaking, there’s also a hint that a man was fired, former Ensign friend Doug Hampton, because he was upset at Ensign screwing his wife.

  249. Another Joe says:

Some things are just cut and dried, no matter how much others try to complicate, obfuscate, or bloviate. So, just to get this right:

On May 14, 2009, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi accused the CIA of lying about who was told what when at which briefing on waterboarding. She added, “They mislead us all the time.” “They” is the CIA; “us” is the Congress.

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, who, it needs to always be mentioned, scampered away from Congress in disgrace, said back in May, “To have the person third in line to be president say that the CIA misleads us all the time is so utterly irresponsible and such an attack on the men and women who are risking their lives…that she disqualifies herself for being speaker of the House.”

Fox “news” host Bill O’Reilly barely said (in an “interview” with Gingrich), “The unintended consequences of the Speaker of the House basically saying to the world, hey, the U.S. government is corrupt. You know, the CIA is a bunch of liars. And they misled the Congress and all of these terrible things, that’s got to play out in a much bigger – you know, much more important role than just Pelosi versus the CIA.”

How old are you, because I’m 41 years old and I know for a fact that you can read another’s opinion or thoughts, fall madly in love with these opinions & thoughts, and then you can spread your most favorite thought & opinion online but you have to USE YOUR OWN WORDS to do it! You cannot (as my 41 years have proven)…I repeat…you CANNOT…copy & paste THEIR WORDS…WORD FOR WORD in a comment as if they were your own…unless you give credit where credit is due. You can either say, “So-n-so on so-n-so blog said this recently” and then use QUOTATION MARKS or you can copy & paste and then give the link to where you found the direct quote.

Imagine the surprise when they found the only people who liked the New United Corporation of America, were the people that invented it.

And despite all the public confessions of Cheney, and all the memos and secrets that have found their way into the light, they still believe nothing has changed. Everything remains as they wanted. It hasn’t. They have been blinded by the old status quo. And they still think it’s here. Just rumors. Nothing to it. Cheney was a great VP. I have no patience for anyone who makes excuses for plagiarism. From a practical view, there is no reason for it, other than to take credit for other people’s words, especially on a blog like this where they’ve provided very simple tools to indicate that something is a blockquote, and to provide a link to the original source. It may be honestly lazy, but I don’t consider that an excuse, either.

It makes me angry that the neocons can’t form words in their heads to let their fingers know what to type, so instead, they copy & paste large sections of someone else’s hard work to make their points. Not giving credit to the person who did the hard work is disgusting but it proves one thing:

    NEOCONS ARE LAZY PIGS!

The End. Case closed. No further comment is needed.

You can then come back here and discredit the imbecile.

Not giving proper attribution IS taking credit, hanshiro! If any one of us did that, you’d be all over us — be honest.

There is no error involved here. Another Joe has several comments on this thread alone that he copied and pasted, including AFTER he was called out on it.

Is that the best reasoning you have for NOT discussing the valid points Joe copied and pasted here?

Or does the mere fact that Joe copied and pasted negate the validity of what Pax Christi wrote?

I’m sorry you didn’t like that Joe didn’t credit Pax Christi.
I’m over it. You? Because I happen to think that Pax Christi made some extremely valid points. You?

Yet, in all of this you’re content in bashing Joe, and me apparently, for having even bringing up the points Pax Christi raised.

Now, please understand that I do not think coppy/paste is an appropriate way of communicating, however, I find the points that Pax Christi via Joe(you really should at least link to the source/manners if anything) are valid.

That is the discussion I’m seeking to have. NOT a position of defending other posters here at TP(unless it’s a “real” troll that bashes one of us). Note, you are one of the “us” I count on and would defend.

Really, there is a bigger picture here at play and harping on whether or not someone colored outside the lines is getting lost in banal minutia…

Using someone else’s words without attribution isn’t an “error,” Hanshiro. If you did that in a thesis, it wouldn’t be an error, and it could get you a nice fat F. The little zoo buddies have once again turned the thread into an ad hom nightmare, trading accusations and throwing out baseless claims of plagiarism because Joe pasted a case against Obama. Had it been about bush, there would be no uproar.

    Hanshiro, you left something out:

One should be more conscious when using other people’s words. And using them without clarifying that they are someone else’s words is “taking credit.”

Plagiarizing in a term paper will get you an F because it’s unethical. It’s unethical no matter where you are; “just a blog” doesn’t cut it, at least in my book. If you choose to ignore or excuse plagiarism, that’s definitely your option, but don’t expect others to play along. Lying about people is slander or libel whether it’s in a newspaper or on a blog.

On a practical matter, if you make a distinction like this, then you devalue blogs and validate those who say that they are irrelevant.

Its childish, but part of an online forum. Fortunately, most that have something to say structure there comments in a way that it is obvious some thought went into it.

But even then, just scroll by a few of those too because there is nothing “progressive” about flaming, baiting, or stalking – that is what the wingnut sites do.

No…….Let’s talk about those who plotted our national security strategy and were in charge on 9/11 ; the worst attack EVER on American soil , tool…………

    That’s not stalking, it’s talking.

Stalking is gleaning every single comment for perceived slights and responding to said slights in nonsensical comments in which the alleged slighter is not identified.

    Blog Community Rules

But stalk and attack all you want, those that are here for ideas just scroll past, a few choose to point out the childishness and hypocrisy of it, but that is up to them.

If you prefer – STALK AWAY and then call the waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabulance and feign outrage over someone else’s imagined violation of the forum expectations.

  373. Ape-Man says:

Yo! there, W., it’s not OK when you do it. Take a look at yourself George. You too Dick, and your whole entourage. You really are a scourage.

    And now this! Bad boys.

  376. gummble-bee-itch says:

    Another Joe Says:
    you’re stalking…

Yes, it’s true. We’ve followed you to other blogs and whispered unkind remarks. We’ve tracked you to your home and kicked over the bird bath . . . oh, wait. That was another paranoid. Never mind.

I’ve known some real Internet stalkers, Joe, including a woman who issued death threats and made obscene comments about a bartender on his well-loved blog. And another friend actually had a stalker track down his phone number and make unpleasant comments to his wife, long distance.

You really need to grow a thicker skin.

  377. Another Joe says:

It is too rich that a “self proclaimed fanclub” is actually the largest group of terms violators here…

But anyone that reads the threads can see that and in time, they will just scroll on past or, like yesterday, leave the community.

Glad that crowd doesn’t consider me as part of their clique… Bloggers don’t need “friends” that harrass, stalk, and flame others.

  378. the great GOPsby says:

Now that you’ve arrived, we’re as far off as we can get.

  384. Another Joe says:

Even the residents trolls see it…

But its all because you’re “big fans” of TP

So stalk and flame, stalk and flame, attack, attack, stalk, and flame.

Because that is what a “big fan” would do, right?

  385. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    #361 Joe,
The law of unintended consequences is at play here.
When you do THAT, others will react.

That you are upset by their reaction is surprising to me.

YOU BEG FOR ATTENTION WHEN YOU WRITE THAT SH!T.
DIRTY HANDS DO NOT MAKE A CLEAN DEFENSE!

STOP protesting how people react to you and START becoming responsible for what you post. That you act put-off(but really your not ‘cuz you carry on about how you don’t care but care enough to push more buttons) by how people respond to you is telling.

If I were a doctor, I might recommend a good dose of personal responsibility and a side of humility.

ABC News – John Hendren, Jonathan Karl – ?1 hour ago?
Former spies and some political leaders are saying that a lack of trust between Congress and the CIA is putting the county’s security in jeopardy.

(”why’s everybody always pickin’ on me…”)

but i’m guessing the righties are thinking this is just the distraction they need to throw off the health care fix…

not sure how, considering they’ll have to defend the government they hate so much, but they’ll make something of it…

Read the About page and decide for yourself. We probably shouldn’t waste each other’s time, eh?

  395. Another Joe says:

I am not upset – just pointing out that it is flaming and stalking and those are the same folks that text in bold, feigning indignation about “violation of rules”

It doesn’t matter, they are not important and people interested in the post won’t continue reading and sharing.

    Real big “fans”, huh…

Stalk and flame – won’t chase me away cuz I don’t read ‘em anymore, but I did see others announce they wouldn’t come back yesterday.

And that is what these types of “fans” do – they “stalk and flame”

But doesn’t matter with me – was a good dialog earlier, it is all OT now, and this happens when a core group shows up and…

    Stalks and flames…

  396. Zooey says:

**playing a tiny violin for Another Joe**

  397. Another Joe says:

I don’t have to read what they say, I just skip the posts that are formatted look like teen-text messages, sometimes I see the handles.

When a few handles show up and post every few minutes, the whole thread goes OT.

And it’s the self-proclaimed “fan club”, stalking and flaming, which is what they do.

And the dialog is over, many leave the thread, and it will all start over again 2morrow.

  398. katy says:

oh no… i seem to always wander in at the wrong time…

  403. Another Joe says:

Just stalk and flame, bait and stalk, flame and bait, stalk and flame, bait and stalk, flame and bait, stalk and flame…

and then call the waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabulence, pretending that someone else is OT

  404. Tim Vaculik says:

    dbadass,

I thought I answered that on the other thread. North Korea has already attacked us. Did you miss what happened on July 4th and for about a week afterwards?

Anyway, I kinda know where you’re going with this as my son is of the same opinion. He doesn’t see a threat from Iran or North Korea and he thinks we would just squash them like bugs if they attacked.

The reality is that any country can cause quite a bit of mischief without resorting to a head-on frontal assault.

  405. Zooey says:

Now hanshiro thinks he knows what gummitch and I think about.

Lordy…it’s sad to see such a collapse.

  406. dbadass says:

Tim do you think we have probed them?

  407. Zooey says:

    Another Joe Says:

…pretending that someone else is OT
    July 12th, 2009 at 9:15 pm

Uh huh. When was the last time you posted anything on topic?

  408. dbadass says:

Tim Vaculik what is Iran or North Korea’s motivation(s)?

  409. Another Joe says:

stalk and flame, flame and stalk, its just another form of trolling, bait and flame, stalk and bait, stalk and flame.

Then complain about someone else in a childish attempt to blame someone else…

Its really very disrespectful to the editor and the people that take the time to post the topics for the threads, but if they accept it, so do I.

So stalk and flame, flame and stalk, bait and flame, bait and stalk, stalk and bait, stalk and flame.

Maybe no one else has anything about progressive ideas and values to share until there is a new thread anyhow. This thread isn’t a forum for that anymore anyhow.

So stalk and flame, flame and stalk, bait and flame, bait and stalk, stalk and flame…

  410. the great GOPsby says:

it isn’t made up. it is our life. it is our fine practice. it is the fabric of productivity upon which humanity thrives.

    Maybe I’ll just lurk…

  412. Another Joe says:

I feel sorry for the regular trolls that come here to dump wingnut talking points into this thread – its is emberrassing that a self-proclaimed “fan club” has already disrupted the dialog by stalking and flaming and flaming and stalking and baiting and flaming…

The likes of dung republican, timmy and gooper must be so disappointed because they can’t disrupt the thread with OT flaming and baiting, because the self-proclaimed “fan club” already did it by stalking.

  413. KayInMaine says:

Another Joe are you sure you’re not WayneBRO? LOL! OMG, man. You’ve been pasting large sections of other people’s work and giving the impression it’s your words when it’s not. You need to come to grips that what you’re doing is wrong. Jees. I can’t stand WATBs no matter which party they claim they’re a part of!

And, if you want to stay on topic, great. But don’t plagiarize your comments please because it pissed a couple of us off tonight! We are progressives for a reason….we have original thoughts and ideas for crying out loud!

  415. dbadass says:

You’re delusional, hanshiro. I speak only for myself, of course, but I have a life, a job, family, problems, joys and sorrows. I may obsess over Callie Thorne or Carla Gugino on occasion, but you? That’s hysterical. Like I said, cookies and rescue dogs.

  418. Tim Vaculik says:

    dbadass,

Who knows? I tend to think that we are keeping our powder dry so to speak.

I suppose that enduring a cyber-attack in peacetime is actually a blessing in disguise because it allows us to see where we need better internet safety measures.

One last thing to keep in mind. North Korea doesn’t actually have to nuke one of our cities. All they have to do is send over a bomb to explode high in the atmosphere. This would fry nearly all computers, networks, radio and TV.

  419. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    Joe,
The real trolls are upset because you have hijacked their spotlight!

  420. Reggie says:

The irony meter exploded when AJ posted that!

  421. Tim Vaculik says:

It seems “Another Joe” is peeved for some reason. I hope he has a reason for using all this real estate…

  422. dbadass says:

Sure Tim Vaculik but still you fail to answer the to what benefit question…

  423. Another Joe says:

Its so on-topic to flame and bait and stalk and flame and flame and bait…

Wearin’ out my scroll wheel cuz no one has a chance to post anything on topic, would get lost in the flaming and stalking of the “fan club” and a couple of regulars that feign indignation over the posts of others, all the while

stalking and flaming and baiting and flaming and stalking and baiting and flaming and stalking…

Real “progressive” of ya – one of them sometimes even has the audacity to post a link to ABOUT TP… and it’s stated purpose to “provide a forum that advances progressive ideas and policies.”

I don’t know how you could be more disrespectful to Faiz Shakir, Amanda Terkel, and the rest.

At least the trolls will be honest that they don’t support the site. The people that stab you in the back are the ones to watch for – posting a “fan club” blog and the flame and stalk…

Sure, stalking, flaming, baiting, and stalking generate “hits” and long threads, but it isn’t going to build a community that will continue to give financial support.

  424. pete says:

Is this what Timmeh’s blathering about?

Some public information about the cyber attacks has been emerging via lawmakers with contacts to South Korea’s main intelligence agency. They say the virus has been traced to 86 Internet protocol addresses in 16 different countries, including both the United States and South Korea.

North Korea is not on that list.

    http://www.voanews.com/english/2009-07-10-voa8.cfm

  425. the great GOPsby says:

one good thing about obama is that he is going to create lots of jobs on the cyberwarfare front. so for all you pot-smoking art majors, this is your chance to toughen up without getting any dreaded blood on your hands. get it while the getting’s good. i’m a cs major so all i have to do is declare a specialty. i hope to know the government as well as dick cheney does. he used to head the constitutional purpose of government, the pentagon.

  426. dbadass says:

Screw that dude Tim. He is a poser.

  427. dbadass says:

  428. Max Anax junius -1 says:

  429. pete says:

Yeah, Timmeh. That EMP is dangerous. That’s why all the electronics in the country were frieed with every Nuke test we d…

Wait a minute. EMP is a local effect.

  430. Another Joe says:

I might as well use the real estate to point out that there is a small clique that has effectively ended a meaningful dialog of different opinions by stalking and flaming.

One of them even acknowledged it in the thread yesterday, feigning an apology to the editor. But that same one is back doing it again today – does it each and every day.

Point is – they know who they are, they know they are doing it, and they are doing it under the false pretense of being “fans” while being more disrespectful to the forum than even santo.

I have no malice or anger about it – just if the thread is going to be OT and anther flame war like yesterday, I will be sure that anyone that scrolls through the thread has an opportunity to see it – scroll on by if you like.

But people that want to see who disrupted this thread can easily see who was participating in a dialog that others were respectfully engaged in and who came by to just stalk and flame.

  431. the great GOPsby says:

You’re delusional, hanshiro. I speak only for myself, of course, but I have a life, a job, family, problems, joys and sorrows.

    No doubt, Max. :-D

  436. Another Joe says:

So very disrespectful to the forum…

And a person has to be pretty immature to think they can proclaim they are “BIG FANS” while being the biggest disruptors here.

But folks that wanted to share ideas, links, comments, and opinions on cheney and concealment of cia left a long time ago.

I understand why the editor accepts it, but I know editors understand rhetoric, logic, and argumentation well enough to see what is happening here.

    But 12 year olds don’t.

  437. dbadass says:

Do I really have to. Just scrool around for the endless Another Joe lines, you’ll find it. It is the one where we had to look atthose kids, and the music teacher and all that feel good about your yuppie ass art center in your stepford town in the oh so cool Pacific Northwest…
