The Republican establishment has often appeared worried that attacks on Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina nominated to the court, could appear racist. But the activists of the conservative movement are less concerned. In May, blogger Debbie Schlussel called Sotomayor “Justice J-Lo.” Now, the Washington Independent’s Dave Weigel reports that Jason Mattera, the spokesman for Young America’s Foundation, has posted a blatantly offensive message about Sotomayor on his Facebook page:

Why isn’t Jason Mattera serving in the military in Afghanistan?
The military is quite keen on enlisting young racists and white supremacists.
Why do all these little repiggies avoid military service like the plague?
They want these wars, but they don’t want to fight them.
Why would any of you want to vote for a repiggie, even for local office?
July 13th, 2009 at 7:06 pmThey are all in on this sort of thing, even if they protest to the contrary.
And yet they can’t understand why we call them racist.
A smart person would have whispered that to a friend (if he thought it was funny at all); a stupid one would broadcast it to all the world.
July 13th, 2009 at 7:11 pm“The Southern Strategy” transformed the Republican Party into a primarily southern racist party. Notwithstanding, they’ve been at pains to paint a very different public picture of themselves.
Now not so much.

July 13th, 2009 at 7:24 pmThe GOP is destroying itself from the inside out! The party of NO is the Grand Old Party of rascists – young and old! Just a shame.
July 13th, 2009 at 7:24 pmBut… but they’re the “Party of Lincoln”! HOW CAN THIS BEEEEE?
July 13th, 2009 at 7:28 pmAmericasBack says:
The Young Republicans are just like the Old Rethuglicans – they ARE racist. They really don’t have to worry about how they ‘appear’.
What’s really great (for us :) is that their core keeps getting smaller and smaller …kind of like a rotting apple core.
The “young Republicans” seem to have been in the news lately, with the whole Audra Shay “Racist Headache” for the Young Republicans’ election. Not the same organizations, I know, but the racist messages from these people need to stop.
July 13th, 2009 at 7:29 pmI wonder when the GOP will realize that the moderates, the ones they are driving away from their party, were the ones that were keeping them from being properly called a party of nothing but racists. Every day, it looks more and more like the racists are the only ones left. That may not be the reality, but it is the perception. And in politics, as we all know, perception is reality.

Take a good look at young Mr. Mattera. He’s the future of the Repuglican Party.
Now notice he’s not much different than the current Repuglican Party or the Repuglican Party of old.
The difference now is the Repuglican Party with their base of “Hatred” and “disrespect” for all not white, not male and smarter than them is leading to the Repuglican Party going the way of the Whigs.

July 13th, 2009 at 7:39 pmJason Mattera….typical cowardly GOP chicken hawk…. During the GW Bush years when he was cheerleading the Iraq invasion…a caller on Cspan asked why he wasn’t fighting. He said “there other important ways he could fight” Translation…I’m too much of a coward to actually fight for the country. I’d guess his “sacrifice” was a yellow ribbon bumper sticker.
July 13th, 2009 at 7:39 pmOne benefit of all the new “social media” technology is that all of the bottom-feeders are coming to light and can be exposed for who they truly are. It will get worse before it gets better, but change can’t happen unless we go through a time of examination.

Repugs have always demonstrated their racism and exclusivity (wealthy only), but when their presidential candidates are so outspoken from the podium, when their spokesmen advocate violence, and justify racism, we should not be surprised that the rank and file feel they have license to spew these kinds of hateful, bigoted comments with impunity.
If any repugs are repulsed by their own party, they are not heard from — so I don’t think we can expect them to denounce this behavior. Ordinarily embarrassment would have been sufficient – but as a whole, they exhibit no conscience, no shame, and in fact more of them are emboldened to act similarly.
There omly 3 reasons to vote republican — you are rich, racist and selfish.
July 13th, 2009 at 7:54 pmthe great GOPsby. Are you arguing that the Contras were not terrorists. Don’t tell me let me guess, you mistook them for freedom fighters. Want to define terrorist for me?

July 13th, 2009 at 9:09 pmNow a new question arises, when not to vote down an abusive troll. At some level, I want the wingnut troll to try to participate, without everyone piling on every time.

The Great GOPshite should know that the young people today already have jobs – two or three of them, as a matter of fact, and virtually all of them have absolutely no health insurance.
According to the Great GOPshite and his fellow travelers, we have no money to “waste” on a public option for health care for people like our young folks.
However, we always seem to have trillions laying around for the corporate wars that the Great GOPshite loves so much, but doesn’t go to fight.

July 13th, 2009 at 9:36 pmIt does not matter if it’s the GOP, Pat Buchanan, Jason Mattera, or Young America’s Foundation: they still have NOTHING for America.
July 13th, 2009 at 9:37 pmThe coolest part of the new system is that only ten of us have to go through the trauma of reading their crap. I may never bother to make a direct reply to a troll ever again. I can just give them a down vote and move on.
July 13th, 2009 at 9:40 pmThis story hurts me to read anymore. My folks are immigrants, I had to work really hard to transcend my class. I just can’t even read about this stuff anymore.
July 13th, 2009 at 9:40 pmpete,
I have recently become filled with hope. ;)
July 13th, 2009 at 9:40 pmThe corporate GOP never had any so-called “ideas” or anything for America. They have had the “goal” of removing the work progress and justice our fathers fought and died for and they succeeded. They wrapped it all in a commerical of sloganeering punctuated with fake emotional wedge issues and the dumbasses bought it. Now the dumbasses sit around with long faces and still don’t know what happened or what to do, but no use to continue to kick a dumb mule.
Great job, corporate America. You were relentless without seeing the long term. Now you can reap your rewards…
July 13th, 2009 at 9:41 pmJason Mattera is the face of the young Republicans: Unable to make an intelligent point, or even willing to try. They will always prefer to hurl personal insults, rather than talk about the issues (because they know they’d lose).
Their leaders Limbaugh, and Coulter taught them well…
July 13th, 2009 at 9:43 pmDr Matt,
It’s simple. What the trolls have to learn is that we won’t tolerate their stupid, useless comments, especially the ones who toss out unrelated or racist insults at other TP’ers.
When anyone with a conservative mindset wishes to have a rational discussion, there are several of us willing to do so. The ones getting flagged down tonight are not among them.
July 13th, 2009 at 9:45 pmWayne A. Schneider says:
I have recently become filled with hope. ;)
Hope is good, Wayne. But it has to be tempered with logic. We can hope the trolls will learn but I’m not about to waste any of my precious life hoping for them. As I see it, the World has moved on and it’s up to them to catch up.
July 13th, 2009 at 9:46 pmYou always think that something like the vote down is great until somebody gets hurt. What if a large enough clique votes you down for legitimately criticizing Obama?
Hmmmm?
July 13th, 2009 at 9:46 pmdbadass, I’m in.
Maybe we should form a cool “clique”. Whaddaya think?
July 13th, 2009 at 9:47 pmI’m in agreement with pete on TP’s trolls with the possible exception of backup, who strikes me as interested in a real debate more often that not.
(OTOH, I’m fairly new here and don’t know him from his Captain Mantastic posts, so those of you who do may have a clearer picture of him than I do.)
July 13th, 2009 at 9:47 pm10. Zooey says:
katy,
Parents who pour that shit into their kids’ heads should be charged with child abuse.
no kiddin’.
hey, i had to rush out to water the deck&patio garden pots…
needed to stew about that also… then otherwise preoccupied.
i really am amazed, daily… how degraded society has become…
July 13th, 2009 at 9:48 pmin so short a time… it seams…
How blatantly offensive would the GOP find it if TP said she ought to shank Scalia? O’Reilly would send one of his stalker/producers, The Heritage Foundation would actually call for hate-crime legislation, Ann Coulter would, of course, blame Obama, the Clintons, gays, Mexicans and anyone who believes in global warming – etc. It would be the WORST THING ANYONE EVER SAID IN HISTORY.
So of course I won’t say it…
July 13th, 2009 at 9:48 pmLet’s see if wingnut GOPspy can participate in the topic of the conversation.
The dictionary defines shanks as fabricated knives, but I am wondering if there aren’t alternative meanings that can be explored.
I believe if one really misses a shot in golf, it is sometimes also called a shank.
If a man said he “shanked” a woman, he probably doesn’t mean he cut her with a fabricated knife, but that he had sex with her.
Perhaps Mattera is expressing a subconscious desire to see a sexual relationship develop between two supreme court justices. Perhaps Mattera means Sotomayer will somehow make a bad shot out of Scalia; that Scalia will not be conservative after Sotomayer gets through with him.
You never know what a wingnut really means because they are not able to express themselves clearly.
July 13th, 2009 at 9:49 pmThanks for caring Bozo the Neoclown, I’ve seen the error of my ways and given gopsby an up vote.
The tenth vote is kind of fun though.
Damn.
July 13th, 2009 at 9:49 pmToday’s GOP is what happens when you shut down thinking for yourself and only listen to the likes of Limpballs and Coulter.
Nobody could have predicted they would eventually implode doing that. /snark
July 13th, 2009 at 9:51 pmI don’t see it happening. There’s plenty of legitimate criticism of Obama on these boards.
However, what I can see happening is someone voted down for repeatedly trying to make the thread all about oneself and insisting that ones own concerns are the only things that TP should be covering.
Hypothetically speaking, of course…
July 13th, 2009 at 9:52 pmThat would be really, really cool.
July 13th, 2009 at 9:53 pmYou’re right, Trollspotter. I, personally, don’t count B-kup as a troll. I didn’t make that clear.
In fact, though I don’t want it to get around, our conversations would probably be more interesting with a few more B-kups. Alas, there aren’t many rational people who still wish to be associated with the rank and file of America’s right wing. They’ve been driven away by the hate, fear, and failure of their ideology. Heck! They drove me away.
July 13th, 2009 at 9:56 pmTrollspotter, I think you’ve got a pretty good bead on b-cup. He strikes me as a lot more open to real dialogue than our garden-variety trolls.
But he’s got his trollish qualities that surface when he’s pushed.
July 13th, 2009 at 9:56 pmMr. Cobb says:
What if a large enough clique votes you down for legitimately criticizing Obama?
I am willing to take the risk. Also, I want to believe that my fellow posters at ThinkProgress won’t vote down a well-made point, even if it’s critical of the Obama administration.
July 13th, 2009 at 9:56 pmCliques could form and then alliances to counter that. Up/Down wars ensue.
July 13th, 2009 at 9:57 pmWow, only four away from banishment on #180. And I thought TPers had a sense of irony…
July 13th, 2009 at 9:57 pmI think you’re reading the numbers wrong. You’ve got the equivalent of six Recommends, not six votes down.
July 13th, 2009 at 9:58 pmMr. Cobb says:
“Cliques could form and then alliances to counter that. Up/Down wars ensue.”
Then we could go to a color coded system.
July 13th, 2009 at 9:58 pmYeah, that could happen. But I think you’re overestimating the commitment of those who you would expect to join one of these cliques.
I could be wrong, but I just don’t think it’s that important to most of us.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:01 pmMod Squad. Look for Gobsmack’s comments. You can see the negative numbers in his parentheses. Those are the ones headed for oblivion. Until hre learns to have a rational discussion.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:02 pmCan I be in the Cool Kids Clique, too? (I must confess I first wrote Kool Kids Klique, but immediately realized my faux pas!)
Dr. Matt, I’m not sure who Mr. Cobb is or who he represents. He makes some excellent points, but just when I’m ready to step on board, he starts with the “ad hominems” this and “messiah worshipers” that and “cliques” stuff so it’s hard to say but certainly off-putting. Especially coming from one who claims to be “new to this blog”.
BTW, AJ and Hanshiro also make excellent points, but I find it hard to engage with people who launch campaigns to demonize specific posters who are longtime, respected members of this community. It’s no wonder Dems lose their power position every time we get the majority!
PEACE
July 13th, 2009 at 10:02 pmLevi:
I think that “shank” means: To kill another person while forcing sex upon them using the lower leg of a sheep or pig.
Even most GOoPers don’t fall in that category.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:03 pmSee, I’ve already got a down vote down for making a legitimate point.
Baby jesus saw you do that and he’s probably crying.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:03 pmI agree completely, pete. I know I give b-cup a hard time, but it’s mostly because he frustrates the hell out of me when he gets into one of his trollish moods.
But I’ll usually give a new conservative voice here a chance to prove himself truly interested in dialogue. Sadly, few of them ever do.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:03 pmCan we get something cleared up about this “clique” stuff being thrown out there? Do they mean those of us from TheZoo? Or are there other “cliques” to whom they refer? And we are not a “clique”, we are a collection of like-minded bloggers. We are no more a “clique” than all the people who post at FDL or C&L.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:04 pmLevi:
In the twitter shank is a verb, so it’s likely he was imply stabbing Scalia.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:04 pmOK – I was looking at it wrong. I was really puzzled, because usually humor seems to have a welcome here.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:05 pmMy bad.
spencers mom, I think it’s called “Kewl Kids” but I could be wrong.
Either way, you’re a shoo-in.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:05 pmHumping is also a verb.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:07 pmWayne A. Schneider says:
Clique may be referring to the 40 posters who signed the STFU AJ list two weeks ago.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:07 pmHey this vote thing works, we havne’t had anything from gopsby since # 157.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:10 pm“What if cats learn to change their own litter?”
“That would be really, really cool.”
Oooohhhh, yeeaaahhh!
July 13th, 2009 at 10:10 pmLevi the Dungbeetle says:
Humping is also a verb.
Humping might be the best verb of them all!
July 13th, 2009 at 10:10 pmYou know Pete, I have been reading your posts for several months now, and I find a great deal of commonality with you.
Keep up the good work.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:12 pmLevi the Dungbeetle says:
Humping is also a verb.
Levi, I have no idea what this is in response to, but I gotta tell you, it made me laugh! In the midst of all this serious “who’s working behind the scenes with whom, what will become of all these vote down abuses, and OH NOS!”, along you come with “humping is also a verb”.
I must copy that single line into my “keep” stuff because I often seek just the right tone at the end of a memo, and I think this is it:
“I look forward to receipt of your updated status reports. Thanks in advance for your time. Humping is also a verb.”
PEACE
July 13th, 2009 at 10:14 pmJane E. Schneider says:
“What if cats learn to change their own litter?”
“That would be really, really cool.”
Oooohhhh, yeeaaahhh!
Nooooooo! If they learned to change their own litter they might eat us in our sleep. We must maintain our god-given place as superior beings.
I love my kitty but I have no illusions about her loyalty.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:14 pmI gotta say, after visiting the Zoo site a few times, it doesn’t seem at all like a snarky clique, and a lot of times they aren’t even discussing politics. I think the Zoo Clique myth was just a part of Another Joe’s persecution fantasy…
July 13th, 2009 at 10:15 pmIt’s a great comment, now you’re up to 9. Sorry you thought we didn’t appreciate the humor. Oh crap, now I’m going to be accused of being in your “clique”.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:16 pmThe Moderate Squad, the only reason we started The Zoo was because we’d all met here and this place had become overrun with trolls attacking us and we wanted to be able to discuss things without the children interrupting.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:17 pmOnce again, pete makes a great point.
Dogs, you know they’re with ya.
But cats, man… I know I’ve seen my cats give me a look that says, “if I only had thumbs, you humans would be toast” when I open the door for them or open a can of cat food.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:17 pmPete, if our 10 “inside” cats ever decided to eat us in our sleep, I doubt there’s anything we could do to stop them. :0
July 13th, 2009 at 10:18 pmThe Moderate Squad says:
“I gotta say, after visiting the Zoo site a few times, it doesn’t seem at all like a snarky clique, and a lot of times they aren’t even discussing politics. I think the Zoo Clique myth was just a part of Another Joe’s persecution fantasy…”
I totally agree. My only problem is I don’t know many recipes.

Thank you, Levi. I usually agree with your points too.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:19 pmFunny to see the whack-a-troll in place.
Expect to see a few newer monikers showing up for Jeffy Bovine (also known as Archie B = Republicans Blow Goats = olby sucks = Young Cabin Republican = habib = etc.)
Now, on topic.
What is wrong with this GOPiggie turds?
They are calling for violence and even murder based on their political dogmas.
For Jason Matterass: Ninguna gracia. Ve y cagate en tu madre.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:19 pmRich H,
Recipes are just one of many things we discuss at TheZoo. We are, if nothing else, an eclectic bunch of progressives.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:20 pmSorry, Rich, I don’t know why so many of our conversations over there turn to food at some point. ;)

Now, now, johnny. You know the rules. No mothers. ;)
Besides, the English-only trolls will just get even more upset at you. :)
July 13th, 2009 at 10:22 pmWayne,
I know, but I went again today and the post was all about cookes!
July 13th, 2009 at 10:22 pmWhoops, should have been “cookies”
July 13th, 2009 at 10:23 pmGeez, it sounds like it’s something similar to the old days when dbadass would try to entice Troll John Kerry to stick around and converse by offering delectable dishes…
July 13th, 2009 at 10:24 pmCan any of my fellow libs help me out here? What is a racists?
July 13th, 2009 at 10:26 pmJane, I know what you mean.
While I was growing up we had dogs that were much bigger than me and I was still the “alpha”. Cats don’t recognize an “alpha”. If cats were twice as big? They would rule the world or die trying.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:26 pmkim-jong il is a bad man.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:27 pmIf only this system was in place when John Kerry was about. He could have boldly ranked my menus…
July 13th, 2009 at 10:27 pmMost conversations eventually devolve into talk of sex or food, and let’s face it, people have food every day.

We, or I, can’t turn this into a post about cats – great stories though I’m sure could be told.
I’ve got one that can count to ten. Two that love to play fetch and another, Stinky Jr., asleep under my monitor.
All of your posts are very funny by the way. Thanks.

July 13th, 2009 at 10:36 pmI remain amazed that the pro-life party is so intent on killing people…Just today Reichsmarshall Pat Buchannan talked about drowning Levi Johnston. Now this. I guess the only life the pro-life swin care about is in utero and once its outside the uterus they want to kill it with impunity. Fcuking hypocrites.

Someone keeps voting me down :(
Could it be gopsby, after I’ve been so nice to you?
Or Cobb trying to demonstrate his clique theory?
I’ve noticed but don’t care. It’s much too pleasant in here tonight. Especially after this past weekend.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:40 pmI don’t like bullying. It’s just that simple. Nothing mysterious. When I see someone sincere being ganged up on, it hurts me inside so I will say something. That may be a foreign concept to you, though. I haven’t posted for awhile and you’re still on it trying to cast suspicion on me.

July 13th, 2009 at 10:46 pmMr. Cobb
July 13th, 2009 at 10:47 pmMs Wiseman’s work seems antiquated in many ways already. It seems it may have been the resultof reasonable marketing and promotion. Are you interested in socioecology?
You’re welcome, Rich H. I once had a cat that turned the lights on when I left her alone.
But? Cats aren’t the subject of the thread. Except in their own minds.

Ain’t that rich, dbadass? Our pet trolls don’t even know what food is.
July 13th, 2009 at 11:01 pmYa know, I, for the life of me, cannot figure out why Obama wants to solve our problems via bipartisanship. There is no such thing. You either do the right thing or you do not. It doesn’t take an even percentage of republicans and democrats all smiley faced together (as if) to accomplish anything.
And with the multitude of shitstains like Jason Mattera out there showing just how low a human being can go, you have to come to the conclusion that the future of the republican party (if you can actually claim they have a future) has just gotten much shorter. These are sickening people that have absolutely nothing of substance to offer humanity, much less America. The NSA, CIA and the FBI are corrupt, we know. But, the Secret Service too? Where are they? Why aren’t they visiting these cretins? Hopefully, they are… in secret.

There is one reason why I don’t call for all of the troll scat elimination.
One needs to know the enemy.
We can take the dive and go to the GOP crappers and see their turds floating.
Or we can just wait for the little turds to start overflowing and then call their LEADERS to clean up after them.
This is the current situation with the GOPiggies.
The de-facto leadership is cheering for further destruction of the USA while the little turds, Jason Mattera and trolls, start to overflow the GOP crapper.
They keep dumping bigger and stinkier turds and they hope to find a winner. Even Joe the Plunger saw the task and walked away at the size of that monster GOP turd.
July 13th, 2009 at 11:04 pmGOPSPUNK troll is just looking for attention and begging for pity. Flag the moron
July 13th, 2009 at 11:06 pmI’ve read comments here for years but never posted anything so I know you all, somewhat. I’ve been a ‘lurker’ so you don’t know me. I hate that term, though. Seems sort of nefarious. I enjoy spencers mom and zooey immensely and gravitate to their posts. Actually, I enjoy all your comments a great deal and that’s why I’m here.

I agree to a point, but to a fairly substantial portion of the electorate, the appearance of bipartisanship is comforting. That being said, it’s WAY easier to get a few Dems to vote across the aisle than to get a GOP to see reason.

July 13th, 2009 at 11:29 pmWay O/T,
July 13th, 2009 at 11:29 pmIm hoping someone out here might be able to help me out I would appreciate it. Im sorry to bring this up on a political blog. A friend of mine took a ferry from LI NY to conn. Her and her husband and her five year old son had a two hour drive to mass. they had to stop at a mcdonalds to change her sons clothes because he had the runs. She used a baby changing station in the womans room. The little guys poop got all over so she took her rings off and left them on the fold out changing station. she walked out to their table and then realized she forgot her rings,it was less then a minute. There was a woman in there with her child. So she banged on the door, Needless to say my friend was hysterical. The sad part is that the woman who walked in there right after her said she did not see any rings. The manager came out and they called the police to file a report. They had serial numbers inscribed on the diamond and the ring, the band and engagment ring cost 16,000 dollars. I know your going to think who gives a sht, but think if this happened to someone you love you would try anything to help your friend. So when she got home she faxed all of her info to the police department. They will give the info to local pawn shops. My question is, does anybody know if theres a national data base or anything that will show if an item is stolen? Or is there anything else that can be done if the person tries to sell stolen jewelry with serial numbers on them? I have been coming to TP for a while now and I know that we dont discuss our occupations but if there is anyone who could give me some guidance it would be greatly appreciated. I apologize for going into such detail, but I thought that it was important to tell you why I was asking for this kind of help. THANKYOU.

Which is why I never take these whines seriously, no matter which side – Republican *or* Democrat – made the first moronic comment in the first place. No doubt, what Mattera said was stupid, but it’s no different than the sataric “repug” comments others make. It’s called hyperbole. No one – including Mattera – would seriously believe Sotomayor would shank anyone, even if Scalia deserves it. :D

No need for apologies, that’s an awful thing to happen to anyone. I haven’t a clue about a possible national database (Wayne’s not here but I’m sure he wouldn’t know, either.) Tried the googles?
July 13th, 2009 at 11:36 pmYou got that right, dbadass.
I haven’t subscribed to cable in years. I like entertainment but I refuse to pay people to lie to me on the “news” channels,
And, speaking of food, my local butcher ordered too many pork tenderloins and ran a sale. Served with baby carrots in a light rosemary sauce, it’s damn hard to beat.
July 13th, 2009 at 11:37 pmWhen I see those like Jason Mattera and all the Young Repukes, I think of the predator velociraptors in the movie Jurassic Park. We live in a very competitive society but we should never become like that. I think of the Japanese with their very cautious ritualized manners developed over centuries. When you have heavy populations, you have to have certain norms when interacting with others. It’s not a free-for-all. The Repukes have been banging away at America for decades now without any understanding of consequences, long-term.
July 13th, 2009 at 11:41 pm“God, I wish I’d said that RHF.”
“You will, The Moderate Squad, you will.”
July 13th, 2009 at 11:42 pmAll I can say, sscncturn64, is to keep in touch with local law enforcement. I had my laptop stolen and it was caught at the local pawn shop. No one got arrested, to the best of my knowledge, but I got my computer back.

I think you just created a new first; GOP and reason in the same sentence. The republicans haven’t had a passing thought of anything remotely resembling ‘reason’ since Dwight D. Eisenhower.

July 14th, 2009 at 12:11 amHey GOPspey, If you want the recipe to pizzahuts thincrust all you have to do is walk down to the end of your moms trailer. Now push the paper boy off of your mother, spread her legs and scrape the crust off of her…. well you know, now you dont need the recipe. You can get the real deal everyday for free. GOPspey my comment is the kind of comment that liberals have to read all the time from you wingnuts. Its all you have.
July 14th, 2009 at 12:18 amJason Mattera appears to be quite an accomplished young psychopath. I’m sure Michael Steele has already taken notice
July 14th, 2009 at 12:20 amof the leadership qualities of this sexist, self-hating latino racist, so refreshingly free of any empathy. He shows
great promise as a future leader in the “New School” GOP.
Hey, I shank golf shots all of the time so I know what the word normally means. What is the exact meaning of the slang term “shank” in this context, sex?
July 14th, 2009 at 12:23 amThe same as “shag”, I assume, DallasNE.
July 14th, 2009 at 12:33 amI just Googled for the slang use of shank and here is what I found.
The context makes it obvious it means to knife Scalia. The irony is that the verb could well fit instead.
July 14th, 2009 at 12:39 amshank
•a weapon that can be used to stab a person or another word for a knife
also a verb
He thinks it is funny to suggest that Sotomayor might shank someone since she is Puerto Rican and grew up in the Bronx.
July 14th, 2009 at 12:41 amjinx
I have heard it many times in prison movies. There it means a homemade knife.
July 14th, 2009 at 12:42 amHmmm….
So does this qualify as reverse racism?
July 14th, 2009 at 12:54 amThe context makes it obvious it means to knife Scalia. The irony is that the verb could well fit instead.
Porto Ricans are known in prison to make shanks. They’ll take a nail or wire from a bed to make an ice-pick device by rubbing it constantly on the concrete floor to sharpen it. That’s where the term comes from.
July 14th, 2009 at 12:54 amStay classy GOP. You wouldn’t want the American public to get the mistaken impression that your bigotry drives your policies.

July 14th, 2009 at 12:57 amO.K.
Late to the party.
I see we now have a vote UP/DOWN.
That’s cool!
If Jason Mattera had a vote UP/DOWN option…

Boy, I like this new feature. I came into this thread with 300+ posts with trepidation since the number of posts indicated a severe troll infestation. How nice to not have to read the insipid troll posts! Now, if people would just vote them down rather than replying to their posts, all will be well once again with TP.

Anyone have any idea how many times a post needs to be voted down before it disappears?
Also, since they seem to have finally hired some smart programmers, why can’t they just give us an “ignore” button so if we don’t want to read anything by a particular poster, we can put them on our “ignore” list. That would work much better than the voting down, even though that is a step in the right direction.

July 14th, 2009 at 1:39 amI just had a thought. It’s kind of like we voted GOPsby off the island. How cool is that? The only problem is that those hitting the thread at the beginning will still be subjected to it’s posts until that post garners enough votes to get it off the island.

I am looking forward to hearing her discussion of “wise latina woman” comment.
As for her record as a judge – I think her heart is in the right place and thus she will make a good SCJ – She will be a good voice out of 9, she kind of scared me as a voice out of 3.
The hearings are a show though – unless the republicans filibuster the vote in the senate, she is a shoe-in. And i don;t see them doing anything like that.
so grats in advance i guess

Can you tell me of any right wing blog that even allows progressives to post?
July 14th, 2009 at 1:49 amYes, the trolls are distracting, but then that is their intention.
They remind me of two year olds that throw themselves on the floor, kicking and screaming so they can be the center of attention.
July 14th, 2009 at 1:51 amSo if you just step over them and pretend they are not there, they realize they will have to go elsewhere for the attention they crave.
It’s just another form of addictive behavior.
July 14th, 2009 at 1:58 am@317
wow what a great question – I don’t think there are lol…
As a republican though, I am much more interested in hearing what other people think. I guess that is good for me that there are so many left-leaning websites out there.
I also think that your run of the mill blogger / web surfer is a younger, “progressive” type. So by shear demographics it does make sense, but not to the degree it appears.
July 14th, 2009 at 2:02 amfound one for you Bilbo – americanthinker.com
July 14th, 2009 at 2:04 amRight wingers are frightened of creative argument and are strong believers in censorship.
Their blogs are parrot shops.
July 14th, 2009 at 2:09 am@ 322
I would argue that would happen when any group of like-minded people talk in a forum – they essentially agree and repeat any set of beliefs.
This forum has it’s own form of censorship as demonstrated above. Bilbo makes a great point in #317 “we have the right to not listen to you”.
I don’t believe in censorship, I believe in responsible citizens.

July 14th, 2009 at 2:30 amWithout wanting to speak for okie, I’d say that most of us here are advocates for free speech, but we have little time for stupid speech.
July 14th, 2009 at 2:32 amI agree with you Canare.
Actually, my best friend is a republican. (Really)
We enjoy discussing recent events and politics, and how they
influence our life.
July 14th, 2009 at 2:39 amjust wait until the young people of today start getting jobs, cars, homes and fat bank accounts. they will come to conservatism in droves to protect their assets and their identity!!
In this economy courtesy of GWB and company, that might take awhile. Lots of young people can’t even find jobs.
But you bring up an interesting point.
So are you saying that being materialistic turns you into a selfish a55 hole? Is that what happened to you? Didn’t your parents teach you any different? Didn’t you ever go to church and learn to care for your fellow man? Didn’t you learn that Jesus said that “that which you have done to the least of my brothers, you have done to me?” He was talking about feeding, clothing, and health care.
Or have you always been that selfish? Did your siblings get more love than you? Does fear of losing your material possessions make you callous towards your fellow humanoids? You can’t take it with you, you know. It won’t exactly fit in the coffin. Even the Pharaohs of Egypt tried taking it with them. All they got was a bunch of grave robbers.

July 14th, 2009 at 3:04 amI visited your american thinker site, Canare.
Sorry. Parrot shop.
I saw little but obstructionist retoric throughout the site.
Although the GOP would have you believe otherwise, progressives believe in not only free speech, but independent thought. Not so much for the conformity thing.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
It has already been gone over many times. She said nothing really controversial. While talking about gender and race discrimination cases she said she would hope her experience as a latina would lead her to make wiser judgements in such cases than a white male. To me about like someone saying their experience as a prosecuter would lead them to make better decisions on criminal cases. She went on to say she wasnt so myopic as to not see that all white courts had made good decisions on those kinds of cases. Nothing there really unless you leave the context out which is what was mostly done
July 14th, 2009 at 3:08 amWell, we can’t really know who is posting here, but if the life details that we can gather can be trusted, there are quite a few over-40s among the regulars here, and some of our best and most insightful commenters are over age 50.
Don’t know what you consider “younger” but I suspect that’s not what you had in mind…

July 14th, 2009 at 3:22 amWell, since Canare believes so strongly in free speech,

This is a private site. They have topics they want discussed. I dont believe in allowing trolls to derail the discussion or to harass people with rude or off topic rants or inane posting just to annoy those atually trying to talk about the issue at hand. That certainly DOES happen and there isnt any question that as a private site they have every right to do what they think to foster a better class of discussion.
July 14th, 2009 at 3:30 amAw, shucks, Zoo…
the feeling is mutual.
July 14th, 2009 at 3:35 amI don’t know what responsible citizenship has to do with free speech.
July 14th, 2009 at 3:36 amEugene, what I got from Canare’s free speech comment was that if we want to use our power of free speech, we need to be responsible about it.
I may be wrong but I took it as an acknowledgment that the trolls are not responsible citizens.
July 14th, 2009 at 3:38 amWell, to me responsible citizen in relationship to censorship sounds like in line thinking.
July 14th, 2009 at 3:48 amWould that be such a bad thing?

July 14th, 2009 at 6:27 amBoth the article and the comments underscore the marked verbal incontinence of right-wingers. Thanks to their efforts, political discourse in America closely resembles bathroom graffiti.
Not to insult bathroom graffitti.
But what do you expect of the people who gave us dirty tricks, witch hunts, the Arkansas Project, the “slime machine,” hate radio, Swiftboating, and Rovean politics?
In happier news, Rush Limbaugh’s Kidneys Are on Fire
July 14th, 2009 at 6:37 amYes those sites are mostly parrot shops – which was my original point. And you will be hard pressed to find any posts by me there (kind of a waste of time to pile on and really contribute nothing to a non-existent debate)
As for Sotomayor and free speech – certainly she has every right to call anyone anything. She could even tell me that she thinks white people should be exported to Sweden. I would still respect her right to free speech. However, the people interviewing her for her job are representative of the beliefs of all of us. So they are our proxies – and thus hold her accountable for things she says.
I support the trolls right to banter, although I don’t read them, equally with the people who taunt and flame those trolls (again I don’t read them).
Have a great day everyone =)

July 14th, 2009 at 5:23 pm#352 – Eugene, someone asked for an example of a right-wing site where you could post and opposing view point. I answered with one.
Disagreeing with a belief is one thing, but taking it all personal is just juvenile, and doesn’t contribute to the debate – it actually detracts from it.
great debs quote:
“When we are in partnership and have stopped clutching each other’s throats, when we have stopped enslaving each other, we will stand together, hands clasped, and be friends. we will be comrades, we will be brothers, and we will begin the march to the grandest civilization the human race has ever known.”

as to your next paragraph tell that to YOUR side. No one here is asking for a pious scold to tell us how to post. You can do what YOU want and you can be absolutly certain I will do what I think best. NOTHING in the world you have to say about it. I have read too many conservatives that never have anything to say about the rude insults from THEIR side and cant wait to attack us for our because they preferred it when liberals were just taking it without returning serve. I have decided that is a bad tactic. If YOU are reasonable I will be anyone tossing mud in my direction will be recieving a return serve thats just the way it is. A Debs quote I like better
I am not a Labor Leader; I do not want you to follow me or anyone else; if you are looking for a Moses to lead you out of this capitalist wilderness, you will stay right where you are. I would not lead you into the promised land if I could, because if I led you in, some one else would lead you out.
