Reed starting ‘hipper’ Christian Coalition.

ralphreedtime After years of scandals and political defeats, it appears Ralph Reed is going to try for a political comeback. Reed is creating a new advocacy group called the Faith and Freedom Coalition, reports the Atlanta Journal Constitution. The latest venture, Reed says, will focus on “finding and training the next generation of conservative leaders, volunteers and activists” and serve as a Christian Coalition 2.0 for conservative voters of faith:

“This is not going to be your daddy’s Christian Coalition,” Reed said in an interview to describe his new venture, the Faith and Freedom Coalition. “It has to be younger, hipper, less strident, more inclusive and it has to harness the 21st century that will enable us to win in the future.” [...]

“Even though I’ve been doing other things, this is kind of like Steve Jobs returning to Apple,” Reed said.

In 1997, Reed was forced to leave the Christian Coalition “as the Federal Election Commission was investigating whether it violated campaign finance rules. By 1999, the IRS had revoked the Coalition’s tax-exempt status for taking partisan stands in elections.” (HT: Taegan Goddard)

“It has to be younger, hipper, less strident, more inclusive”

How is that going to work? The whole idea behind the politics of today’s Christianists is that they are God’s chosen, and they have to tell the rest of us how to behave.

Are they going to abandon that?

Sounds like he has a new marketing angle, but will be selling the same ol’ swill.

I have been watching the second season of “True Blood” on HBO, the recent series about vampires in Louisiana.

in this season, there is an evangelical group fighting the vampires and their human sympathizers known as the Fellowship of the Sun.

This group is headed by a wealthy holy roller who is almost a dead ringer for the younger Ralph Reed, complete with a Georgia accent, and with a man-teasing evangelical hot babe as a wife, lots of make-up and hyper-femininity.

Each time I see this holy roller preacher in the series, I am immediately reminded of Ralph Reed.

it’s long past time to give up our myths and superstitions and start focusing on what is real

This post points up the reason why conservatives will never return to their previous position of prominence. By its very nature, conservatism seeks to conserve the way things are, which are instead rapidly progressing and leaving conservatives in the dust. Who wants to return to the bigoted, unequal, repressive 1950’s?
Conservatives will never be hip. Because. They. Just. Don’t. Get. It.

Talking to the sheeple like you care 101
Lying and deceiving with a straight face 301

And this new venture isn’t going to take partisan stands in elections? Or is Ralph Reed going to be honest and call it what it is — a political special interest group that will specifically support Republican candidates and target Democrats for defeat?

I suspect that when Reed says it “will focus on ‘finding and training the next generation of conservative leaders, volunteers and activists’”, that should tell us.

  44. pete says:

    __________________________________________________________

No, it just means they’ll gladly take anybody’s money.

“More inclusive” just means “bigger mailing list”. Which means they’ll probably have some direct mail pieces targeted to those not normally associated with the evangelical right, but on issues where they perceive a common interest. Such as mailing to black neighborhoods about the evils of gay marriage (with a plea to send money, of course). Or mailing to veterans about the evils of flag burning.

  49. Gregor Samsa says:

    dixie blood says:

I just clicked Vote Up on #46 and both icons went gray and the count went to Vote Down -1 and Vote Up 0.

    I believe it’s working correctly.

Clicking on “Vote Up” adds 1 to the count, clicking on “Vote Down” subtracts 1 from it.

A negative number in a post means it has received more Vote Downs than it has Vote Ups.

  50. stateofthedivision says:

TP’s new voting feature is brought to you by Diebold.

The idea behind this thumbs up/thumbs down upgrade strikes me as a good one, even if it’s looking a touch clunky at the moment.

Votes are not a delta; a difference value. They are 2 or more columns of numbers to be compared by the viewer. A delta is nice but not a good user interface.

    Here’s the fix…for free Faiz….

Show the Ups. Show the Downs. Then, if you like, show the delta, the difference; the simple addition and subtraction equation that means so much less than UP and Down side by side.

Oops! That’s why I included the quotation marks, McMetal. In the context I used “white” is a term for a lack of groovyness and inability to step outside 4/4 time. It has nothing to due with race. I thought that the context was enough and I was wrong. I’m sorry.

And just for a comparison. Ted Nugent is a freaking Reich-wing POS but he’s not, in the musical sense, “white”. Again, I apologize for any offense. I should have used a different term.

What amazed me about Segovia, in his later years, is that such gnarled fingers still worked at all. But I can’t use the term “greatest” for him or anyone else I’ve ever heard of.

I hold to the theory that the greatest virtuosos remain undiscovered. They are the people who play 18 hours a day for a few people in the pub or just themselves. Or they play stuff that no one else can comprehend.

BTW, MCMetal. I played guitar for about 15 years and, essentially, learned two songs. I convinced myself that I was not a musician.

Then I started writing lyrics for songs a friend of mine wrote. Since no one stepped up to sing them I tried it myself, when I was about 40. What a shock! I discovered I could sing well enough that I could bear to listen to the recordings and my musician friends insisted I keep it up.

We have a band of “old farts” with about 30 original songs and have a great time playing them. Once in a great while I even step outside my own inadequacies and sing some old favorite. But? I still don’t consider myself a musician.

    Re: Post 197:

My ex, who is Wiccan, nailed a pair of bible-bangers really good one time.

He was getting ready to do a full moon ceremony, and was dressed in his hooded black robe, when they knocked on his door. He raised his arms and thundered: “IF YOU PEOPLE _EVER_ INTERRUPT ME IN THE MIDDLE OF A SPELL AGAIN, I’LL _TURN YOU ALL INTO TOADS_!!!!!!!!!!

They _ran_ off the porch and peeled out at about 90 per.

When Ralph says that this won’t be your daddy’s Christian coalition, I guess he means that he will be helping to supply slush fund money like he did for Jack Abramoff and prostitutes like he did for Senator Vitter.

Reed is like the thing that would not die. Like all members of the theocratic Taliban, he drags himself out of the muck and comes back again to gnaw on the carcass of what is left of America. And he will not be happy until all individuality is gone and we all march in lock step to his vision of god. Where Onward Christian Soldiers is blared on the streets 24/7 to brain dead followers. He is trying for his own resurrection. He is phony and he is without ethics.

Evil does exist. And in resides in the minds and hearts of all fundamentalists religions of all kinds. The middle east is not the only place these nut jobs reside. Fundamentalism lives everywhere. They chain minds and souls. Hallelujah!!
