After years of scandals and political defeats, it appears Ralph Reed is going to try for a political comeback. Reed is creating a new advocacy group called the Faith and Freedom Coalition, reports the Atlanta Journal Constitution. The latest venture, Reed says, will focus on “finding and training the next generation of conservative leaders, volunteers and activists” and serve as a Christian Coalition 2.0 for conservative voters of faith:
“This is not going to be your daddy’s Christian Coalition,” Reed said in an interview to describe his new venture, the Faith and Freedom Coalition. “It has to be younger, hipper, less strident, more inclusive and it has to harness the 21st century that will enable us to win in the future.” [...]
“Even though I’ve been doing other things, this is kind of like Steve Jobs returning to Apple,” Reed said.
In 1997, Reed was forced to leave the Christian Coalition “as the Federal Election Commission was investigating whether it violated campaign finance rules. By 1999, the IRS had revoked the Coalition’s tax-exempt status for taking partisan stands in elections.” (HT: Taegan Goddard)
Reed must be broke?
July 13th, 2009 at 3:57 pmGOP = “Grifters Only Party”?????
July 13th, 2009 at 3:59 pmLOL “…. like Steve Jobs returning to Apple”.
Perhaps in his wildest dreams he thinks he’ll be like Jobs returning to Apple.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:02 pm“It has to be younger, hipper, less strident, more inclusive”
How is that going to work? The whole idea behind the politics of today’s Christianists is that they are God’s chosen, and they have to tell the rest of us how to behave.
Are they going to abandon that?
July 13th, 2009 at 4:02 pmSounds like he has a new marketing angle, but will be selling the same ol’ swill.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:03 pmHipper? As in “hip replacement surgery?”
Man, these old white guys are getting desperate.
Welcome to the Dixiecrat Party, Rethuglicans – enjoy your Southern dominance.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:04 pmGod save us from the christian coalition!
July 13th, 2009 at 4:04 pmAfter God’s Own Party’s youngsters just chose an avowed racist as their chairman, they really should think twice before using the term “hip” when describing their efforts.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:05 pmBut their ideas are still from the 16th century.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:05 pmMeet the new Christian coalition, same as the old Christian coalition…
July 13th, 2009 at 4:08 pmIf Reed wants to be hip he needs to hook up with Michael Steele and learn some jive talk.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:08 pmmore inclusive?? well the youngsters’ smashed that last week by electing Audra Shay:
July 13th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
it sounds like a half-baked creeper movie where the devil’s nephew takes over a bible camp
July 13th, 2009 at 4:09 pmSame clowns, different circus.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:09 pmI have been watching the second season of “True Blood” on HBO, the recent series about vampires in Louisiana.
in this season, there is an evangelical group fighting the vampires and their human sympathizers known as the Fellowship of the Sun.
This group is headed by a wealthy holy roller who is almost a dead ringer for the younger Ralph Reed, complete with a Georgia accent, and with a man-teasing evangelical hot babe as a wife, lots of make-up and hyper-femininity.
Each time I see this holy roller preacher in the series, I am immediately reminded of Ralph Reed.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:12 pm“Religion was invented when the first con man met the first fool.” — Mark Twain
July 13th, 2009 at 4:12 pmif there was a god, there would be no reed
amazing how this supposedly all-powerful being needs an army of salesmen to try to con people into believing in him
if he was real, he would make himself evident
we really need to make an effort in this country to educate people beyond religious beliefs
it’s long past time to give up our myths and superstitions and start focusing on what is real
July 13th, 2009 at 4:14 pmThis post points up the reason why conservatives will never return to their previous position of prominence. By its very nature, conservatism seeks to conserve the way things are, which are instead rapidly progressing and leaving conservatives in the dust. Who wants to return to the bigoted, unequal, repressive 1950’s?
July 13th, 2009 at 4:14 pmConservatives will never be hip. Because. They. Just. Don’t. Get. It.
The latest venture [...] will focus on “finding and training the next generation of conservative leaders, volunteers and activists”
The training curricula includes the following courses:
Cheating on your espouse without getting caught 101
July 13th, 2009 at 4:14 pmThe government as a boogieman 201
Talking to the sheeple like you care 101
Lying and deceiving with a straight face 301
Thank God I’m an atheist.

July 13th, 2009 at 4:14 pmReed is such a twisted little $#@&. It scares me to think of the demented skeletons that are undoubtedly hidden in his closet.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:14 pmPerhaps selling a “new” Christianity to teens would work – one where they can have drugs, premarital sex, and babies and be held up as national heros for doing so.
At least it worked for levi until he wrote a “kiss and tell” book about the palins.
Now the wingnuts want to kill him for it.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:14 pmThis bastard is a part of the Abrahamoff (sp?) criminal empire. How is that even close to being a real Christian.
He should be in prison. He scammed native Americans and should be in prison!!!!!!!
He’s Mr. Casino Christianista!!!
Give it up Ralph. You are DOA in the real world.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:18 pmLook at that face.
Look again.
If Reed’s life ever becomes a movie, Ed Norton just got the part.
Maybe Quentin Tarantino can direct the movie. It would be like…
Even though I’ve been doing other things, this is kind of like Jerry Garcia returning to / from The Dead
July 13th, 2009 at 4:18 pmI’ll second that.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:20 pmChristian Coalition
“It has to be younger, hipper, less strident, more inclusive…”
More inclusive? Are they including non-Christians now?
July 13th, 2009 at 4:20 pmI’m not convinced that Jesus ever existed but, if He had, there’s no way He would be a GOoPer. His shtick about separating Caesar and God, alone, would get him booted from the party if He lasted that long.
Heck, let’s face it, today’s American Evangelicals would probably shoot the poor hippie on sight. I don’t think they would be patient enough to crucify Him again.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:21 pmHoly rollerism is a great gig, with lots of off-the-books cash, rampant adultery,
Log Cabinettes to cover for clandestine same-sex affairs, luxury cars, free travel,

Wait a minute…
I am hearing the call of God to the ministry…
July 13th, 2009 at 4:22 pmSometimes I think the GOP puts stuff up like this just to give us a laugh!
July 13th, 2009 at 4:22 pmWhoa! Vote up and down… interesting and very hip, TP.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:23 pmFaiz,
This new “Vote Up | Vote Down” thang is broken. All of the Vote Ups are being counted as Vote Downs.
Where did you buy this upgrade, Diebold? Hahahhha!
Seriously. Did anybody test this “upgrade” first?
July 13th, 2009 at 4:23 pmHow can you have a Vote Down of -1 ???? Jeeeezzz!!!
July 13th, 2009 at 4:24 pmI think it just lets you know the total ‘recommends’ dixie… every ‘vote down’ is just -1 recommend.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:24 pmIs Ralph Reed out of jail? Is he setting aside any hip Christian action for Jack Abramoff?
Lot’s of Christian money is buying land in Israel. If they can’t drive out Palestinians with violence, they’ll buy them out.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:24 pmand every ‘vote up’ is +1 ‘recommends’
July 13th, 2009 at 4:25 pmTP, is up down & down up now?
…I didn’t know this was a GOP site!
Is Pat Buchanan the new moderator?
July 13th, 2009 at 4:25 pmBy 1999, the IRS had revoked the Coalition’s tax-exempt status for taking partisan stands in elections.”
_____________________________________________________________
And this new venture isn’t going to take partisan stands in elections? Or is Ralph Reed going to be honest and call it what it is — a political special interest group that will specifically support Republican candidates and target Democrats for defeat?
I suspect that when Reed says it “will focus on ‘finding and training the next generation of conservative leaders, volunteers and activists’”, that should tell us.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:25 pmZimzone says:
If Reed’s life ever becomes a movie, Ed Norton just got the part.

July 13th, 2009 at 4:26 pmI voted recommend on a comment before th software switch and it went to Vote Down.
That makes -1 sense to me!!!
July 13th, 2009 at 4:26 pmAfter testing it, the vote down is it it puts a -1, vote ups put a positive 1.
The number showing after the vote down is confusing.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:28 pmI just clicked Vote Up on #46 and both icons went gray and the count went to Vote Down -1 and Vote Up 0.
This is phucked up software and should be rolled back, sent back to development.
This is a LAME upgrade right now!!!
July 13th, 2009 at 4:29 pmThe “vote up”, “vote down”, thing may be interesting but? I would prefer it if TP just banned the IP’s of repeat offenders. They would only have to ban two of them to eliminate the entire population of sockpuppets.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:29 pmSuch a clean, well-groomed young christian man. Every time I see his picture it looks like he’s fantasizing about having a big stiffy up his ass. Will it be months or years before he’s outed?

The perfect way for RLF to hit new lows.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:29 pmReed starting ‘hipper’ Christian Coalition.
If that’s the case , he needs to leave immediately ; Reed couldn’t be hip if I gave him intense lessons for years , sat him bare-assed on the iceberg that sank the Titanic , while someone poured liquid nitrogen into his stupid , square mouth……………

July 13th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
More inclusive? Are they including non-Christians now?
__________________________________________________________
No, it just means they’ll gladly take anybody’s money.
“More inclusive” just means “bigger mailing list”. Which means they’ll probably have some direct mail pieces targeted to those not normally associated with the evangelical right, but on issues where they perceive a common interest. Such as mailing to black neighborhoods about the evils of gay marriage (with a plea to send money, of course). Or mailing to veterans about the evils of flag burning.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:32 pmdixie blood says:
I just clicked Vote Up on #46 and both icons went gray and the count went to Vote Down -1 and Vote Up 0.
I believe it’s working correctly.
Clicking on “Vote Up” adds 1 to the count, clicking on “Vote Down” subtracts 1 from it.
A negative number in a post means it has received more Vote Downs than it has Vote Ups.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:32 pmTP’s new voting feature is brought to you by Diebold.
Only vote down’s are being counted. When I clicked a “vote for” and refreshed the page, the vote count went into “vote down.”
July 13th, 2009 at 4:33 pmThe idea behind this thumbs up/thumbs down upgrade strikes me as a good one, even if it’s looking a touch clunky at the moment.
Maybe it would be helped simply by moving the location of the (#) so it’s not right after Vote Down?
July 13th, 2009 at 4:34 pmReed starting ‘hipper’ Christian Coalition.
Is a ‘hipper’ anything like the ‘gipper’?
Given it’s Ralphie Reed & the ‘I’m Holier Than Thou’ crowd, how about the ‘Zippers’.
…I’m down with that
July 13th, 2009 at 4:34 pmMore inclusive to allure Darlyy types into spending their hardly earned pittance on the ‘new and improved’ rag.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:35 pm“Even though I’ve been doing other things, this is kind of like Steve Jobs returning to Apple,” Reed said.
More like Carly Fiorina returning to Hewlett Packard…
July 13th, 2009 at 4:36 pmLittle Ralphie is rich, so he must be a good man. He has been blessed by God.
He is not one of those filthy sinful poor people.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:36 pmThumbs up to AP!
July 13th, 2009 at 4:36 pmRipping off Indians just isn’t the same without a domestic policy czar at your beck and call, eh, Ralph?
July 13th, 2009 at 4:36 pmGregor, thanks for the education. You are correct.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:36 pmSo they’re going to have a ‘rapture ready’ column>?
July 13th, 2009 at 4:37 pmTrollspotter: that seems to be exactly the problem, and your solution seems a good one — if we move the total vote count to someplace else so it won’t look like every vote is a “Vote Down”, then perhaps this whole newfangled vote up/down thang will actually be worth somethin’…
July 13th, 2009 at 4:37 pmThe previous count was 0 to 0. I voted up and it went 0 to -1. That’s not even close to understandable much less approaching a correct vote count.
The count should be 1 to 0. There are no negative numbers in voting. You start at 0 and go from there.
Plus BOTH ICONS should not indicate that they were clicked. That’s stupid to the core.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:37 pmPlus Vote Downs start at 0 and Vote Ups start BLANK. That’s stupid too.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:39 pmnew system should show both the amount of thumbs up and the amount of thumbs down
else the trolls will use their socks to skew the numbers
July 13th, 2009 at 4:39 pmWhat the fu(k is with this stupid ratings system ?
Especially with morons like RepublicansLoveCacks and the GOPGotVD lurking…………

July 13th, 2009 at 4:42 pmEasy there, dixie blood. Let’s give the new system a trial. I think that both light up to indicate that a vote has been cast. Up or down, you don’t get another vote. If it’s any consolation? Tracist is at -7 in another thread.

July 13th, 2009 at 4:42 pmIt’s been my experience in life that when someone needs to tell you that something is hip, or hipper, then it’s pretty lame. Remember when Richard Nixon got a hug from Sammy Davis Junior at the 72 repub convention?

July 13th, 2009 at 4:45 pmRepiggies just don’t do “hip.” It’s impossible.
Joe Scarborough is thought of as “hip” in repiggie circles because he plays in some sort of rock band.

July 13th, 2009 at 4:45 pmI must admit, though, it would have been nice if TP had announced the change rather than just flipping the switch.

When I read this post I couldn’t help but feel freaked out! Evangenital @ 17 – I thought the same thing when I looked at this guy’s pic. He looks like the religious fantic on “True blood.”
I hope that DHS is aware and has placed this KKKristian Coalition on the watch list!
July 13th, 2009 at 4:47 pmOh great Reed is going to create and brainwash a new generation of hateful, intolerant religious zealots for the American Taliban. Sounds like Children of the corn part????
July 13th, 2009 at 4:47 pmOther people could be voting at the same time or since you last refreshed the page. The results are the totals not just your votes. TP can only offer features Wordpress has and that they are willing to pay for. The minus totals seem easy enough to understand. I think we could show some appreciation to TP for putting in this feature instead of griping because we don’t understand it.

I predict instead they’re going to wear their negative numbers like a badge of honor, as in, “wow — look how much attention I’m getting!”
For this reason, I support continuing Operation FnF for the obvious trolls where are here for no reason but to disrupt.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:51 pmTo learn more about the corruptness of Ralph Reed, Jack Abramoff, Grover Nordquist, Tom Delay one must read the book “Follow The Money” by John Anderson.

July 13th, 2009 at 4:57 pmThanks, Dogfather. It looks like they’ve since added a | or two after the Vote Down. Step in the right direction, though there might be a better way to do it.
Incidentally, TP software updating team, will giving a comment a very negative score have any other effects? For example, hiding the post from view?
July 13th, 2009 at 4:58 pmYou’re probably right, misscoleopteramolly. The twisted little trolls will just see our contempt as “proof” of what “good conservatives” they are.
On the plus side. I think it may make it easier to avoid a direct response to the trolls. A simple “Down” vote and then move on sounds like a good plan. Though I intend to continue refuting blatant lies.

July 13th, 2009 at 5:01 pmI really wish people would not announce that something is being overhauled to become “hipper”. We didn’t need a “new Coke” announcement out of Reed.
Announcing that a coalition’s image needs an overhaul would be a clear ringer to society that the original underlying message, no matter how many layers of mascara you put on it, isn’t getting through at all.
And yes, this is where the “lipstick on a pig” metaphor is appropriate.
And by the way?
Steve Jobs >>>>>>>>> Ralph Reed

July 13th, 2009 at 5:03 pm#95,
They changed the interface to take the number out of the Vote Down style and link.
I understand the intent and math now.
However, the artist has failed to communicate the intent correctly. It looks wrong to a layman now and that’s not right either.
Votes are not a delta; a difference value. They are 2 or more columns of numbers to be compared by the viewer. A delta is nice but not a good user interface.
Here’s the fix…for free Faiz….
Show the Ups. Show the Downs. Then, if you like, show the delta, the difference; the simple addition and subtraction equation that means so much less than UP and Down side by side.

It’s that “mind vs. body” thing, dbadass. I’ve known octogenarians who were more “hip” than most teenagers. My Mom’s uncle tried skateboarding, for about 2 minutes on a nice flat driveway, at around 80 and lived through the experience.

July 13th, 2009 at 5:13 pmIf you’re agnostic, then you’re an atheist.
Theism = belief in the existence of a god or gods
Atheism = lack of this belief
If you don’t know one way or the other, then you can’t say that you believe, can you?
I know people like to say that an atheist absolutely denies the existence of gods, but then that would not follow the definition of the term theist nor the usage of the prefix “a.”

Oops! That’s why I included the quotation marks, McMetal. In the context I used “white” is a term for a lack of groovyness and inability to step outside 4/4 time. It has nothing to due with race. I thought that the context was enough and I was wrong. I’m sorry.
And just for a comparison. Ted Nugent is a freaking Reich-wing POS but he’s not, in the musical sense, “white”. Again, I apologize for any offense. I should have used a different term.

What amazed me about Segovia, in his later years, is that such gnarled fingers still worked at all. But I can’t use the term “greatest” for him or anyone else I’ve ever heard of.
I hold to the theory that the greatest virtuosos remain undiscovered. They are the people who play 18 hours a day for a few people in the pub or just themselves. Or they play stuff that no one else can comprehend.

I guess I just object to the word “greatest” on principle. With six and a half billion people on this planet I just assume it’s impossible to make such a claim. I have a feeling, which may be wrong, that there’s some kid no one has heard of who could “school” Segovia. There’s always the young disciple, or radical, who surpasses the master.

We can make some seriously cute money….
July 13th, 2009 at 6:13 pmBTW, MCMetal. I played guitar for about 15 years and, essentially, learned two songs. I convinced myself that I was not a musician.
Then I started writing lyrics for songs a friend of mine wrote. Since no one stepped up to sing them I tried it myself, when I was about 40. What a shock! I discovered I could sing well enough that I could bear to listen to the recordings and my musician friends insisted I keep it up.
We have a band of “old farts” with about 30 original songs and have a great time playing them. Once in a great while I even step outside my own inadequacies and sing some old favorite. But? I still don’t consider myself a musician.
