Mattera clarifies his Sotomayor ‘shank’ comment: ‘What I meant to say is that she’ll shoot him up in a drive-by.’

Yesterday, ThinkProgress, picking up a post by the Washington Independent’s Dave Weigel, noted an offensive Facebook message by Young America’s Foundation spokesman Jason Mattera, in which he said, “If Sotomayor gained life experience from The Ghetto, does that mean she’d have a tendency to shank Scalia?” Mattera responded to “the silly outrage from liberals” today in a message to Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey:

Okay, guys. Sorry. I got it all wrong: Sotomayor will not “shank” Scalia on the bench. What I meant to say is that she’ll shoot him up in a drive-by. Watch out, brother Antonin!

Second salvo launched! Your turn, Sonia.

Mattera, who grew up in Brooklyn, claimed that his posting was part of a joking “inner-city rivalry” with the Bronx-born Sotomayor. He also said that he was just “mocking the notion that Sotomayor is somehow better qualified for the Supreme Court because of her early days in The Bronx.”

Update Weigel responds to Morrissey asking, "why TP and the WI spends its time trolling Jason’s Facebook account,” by saying that he's friends with Mattera on Facebook and he monitors his (Weigel's) "feed from time to time."

Oops, I should use the word “think” in reference to Mattera. My bad.

Okay, Mattera, since we’re stereotyping to be funny, tell me: what is the weapon of choice for the race/religion of morons like yourself?

The only “drive-bys” and “shanking” so far have come from this Mattera skank. Does he always lurk in alleys with dagger drawn? Or does he just come out on special occasions?

  10. belaccifer lacca says:

If Jason Mattera gained a conscience or a soul, does that mean he’d have to shank himself out of shame?

Does the right wing have anything other than racist nonsense at this point? Where’s the thoughtful opposition?

  11. Gregor Samsa says:

“mocking the notion that Sotomayor is somehow better qualified for the Supreme Court because of her early days in The Bronx.

Notion which, of course, Sotomayor and her supporters have never advanced but conservatives made up out of tin air.

That’s all Republicans have at this point: Personal attacks, strawman arguments, lies, distortions… in other words, business as usual.

  12. DRxJ says:

…and didn’t Mr. Imus lose his job for referencing the female b-ball players as “nappy headed hoes”???

When should we expect Jason Mattera to step down as spokesperson for YAF???
    (Not holding my breath)

Besides, is anyone as tired of whites trying to act “hip” and “ghetto” as I am?

I can only guess there is a large gap between life experiences between those who see this type of racially tinted humor as acceptable and those who find it offensive.

Good luck on sharing that joke on the next GOP convention floor with the very small pocket of minorities you might get the privelage to mingle with.

  15. ryking says:

Mattera is in violation of Facebook’s TOS, 3.6, about hateful content. He should be banned. If I had a Facebook account, I’d report his ass.

  16. margarine says:

It’s sad that Mattera thinks Judge Sotomayor reads his shit.

Yeah, that’s the only part of it that’s actually funny. I’m not aware of her directly responding to him… TP and so forth are not Sotomayor.

  17. barfly says:

You see, I’m perfectly comfortable mocking the notion that Sotomayor is somehow better qualified for the Supreme Court because of her early days in The Bronx. For the life of me, I don’t see how living in public housing enhances one’s understanding of the Constitution. As a kid in NYC, I remember the crackheads, the hookers, the gang-bangers, the robberies, etc. Sure, it gives me interesting stories to tell over drinks, but would it heighten my ability to uphold the integrity of the United States Constitution? I’m gonna say no.

Notice, he doesn’t say that he was raised in a housing project, like Sotomayor – so he must know exactly what it was like for her. He’s just a mouthy kid with zero world experience.

  18. MCMetal says:

Mattera strikes me as someone with zero sense of self and an extreme need to put himself in the spotlight, even if he has to make a total fool of himself in the process.

    GAWD, I LOVE THAT!!!

  35. spencers mom says:

In case some don’t know about Mattera’s history on divisive issues, here are some choice bits from sourcewatch.com:

Judy Shepard, whose son Matthew was beaten to death in Wyoming, had given a talk at the Roger Williams campus about the murder of her son and had called on students to practice tolerance and respect. Mattera’s column accused her of “preying on students’ emotions and naivety” [sic] so that she could become “a mascot for the homosexual agenda.”

    And another:

In 2004, as “a protest against affirmative action,” the College Republicans at Roger Williams University offered a $250 “whites-only scholarship.” Applicants were asked to submit an essay and “a recent picture to confirm whiteness,” reported CNN. [5]

Mattera, who was a member of the school’s College Republicans at the time, said the scholarship was intended to help students “at a disadvantage because of their Caucasian descent. The university compiles scholarships just for students of color on campus. And the other kids who are not of color on campus have to fend for themselves.” [6]

When the interviewer pointed out that Mattera had received $5000 from the Hispanic College Fund, Mattera responded: “It’s fine if you want to give scholarships based — or if certain groups based on their ethnic background and striving those minority groups inside. But why should I automatically be at an advantage just because I’m Puerto Rican and why should that automatically qualify me over some people at my university?” Later, he added, “Hispanic is not a race. Hispanic is — you can’t tell me what color Hispanic is. It’s white, blank, Indian, Asian, Hispanic. It’s not a race-based scholarship.”

    And finally this:

In May 2007, Mattera weighed in on a current Roger Williams University’s complaint that a science class had made Al Gore’s documentary about global warming, “An Inconvenient Truth,” required viewing. Mattera called the documentary “a highly political movie” and the class requirement “academic abuse,” on Fox News’ “Hannity & Colmes.” [8]

Colmes challenged Mattera, pointing out that global warming and its link to human activity are accepted truths within the scientific community: “You want to have equal time for something that is not of equal scientific weight.” Mattera responded, “Who you are [sic] to say that’s not equal scientific weight? … You don’t light [sic] a candle intellectually to any of these men.”

What a lovely man. It’s surprising he’s single.

    PEACE

  41. hellinabucket says:

Mattera doesn’t “clarify” anything with this latest slur. He confuses close up shanking with a drive by? No, he confuses motion with direction, he confuses typing words with logical thoughts and volume with substance.

Let’s be clear about things; if you’re going to post garbage on Facebook, expect people to react to that garbage. If you consider that outrage “silly”, perhaps you shouldn’t have opened your mouth to step into it.

As far as the “Brooklyn 3; The Bronx 0!” comments, apparently Mattera is trying to turn this into a gang war or a Mets/Yankees series. That being said, I’m pretty sure that neutral parties operate the scoreboard when the two teams play.

MATTHEWS: You’re 21 years old, you’re eligible to serve. Would you like to serve in this war?

MATTERA: I’m fightin’ the battle for ideas. I’m fighting for–

MATTHEWS: No, I’m just asking a particular question. Would you like to enlist in this war?

MATTERA: No, cause I’m fighting a separate battle. I’m fighting, we’re fighting the culture war here, but I’m also supporting the battle that’s raging in Iraq.

MATTHEWS: Well what kind of people should fight in this war, if not you?

MATTERA: Those who want to. Those who want, who feel the desire of the passion to go over to Iraq. I have many friends who are in Iraq myself, people from my church, people who I graduated with–

    MATTHEWS: Mmm. . . .

MATTERA: –um they want to go fight over there. I’m here. I’m fighting the culture war right now. Both needs to be fought and both need to be won by conservatives.

MATTHEWS: Paul Hackett, a Democratic candidate for Congress who just lost that close election in Ohio, referred to the President as a chickenhawk, someone who supports war but doesn’t fight it. What do you think of that phrase “chickenhawk?”

MATTERA: I don’t like the phrase “chickenhawk.”

    MATTHEWS: Why not?

MATTERA: Huh. (smirks) Because it doesn’t fit and I don’t think–

MATTHEWS: It means you talk tough, but you act chicken.
