ThinkFast: July 14, 2009

sotomayoroath

On day 2 of the Sotomayor confirmation hearings, Republicans have indicated they “plan to confront Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor with her own words, taken from speeches dating back 15 years, as they try to raise doubts about her ability to judge fairly.” “Today will be the true test of how she handles tough questions,” Republicans tell Politico. The Wonk Room will be live-blogging.

President Obama vowed yesterday to veto a $680 billion defense spending bill “if lawmakers set aside funding for more F-22 warplanes than the Defense Department says it needs.” Many lawmakers who support the funding have F-22 contractors in their states. “We do not need these planes,” Obama said, adding, “I will veto any bill that supports acquisition of F-22s beyond the 187 already funded by Congress.”

Two former law intelligence officials told CNN that former Vice President Cheney is getting a “bum rap” over reports that he ordered the CIA to withhold information from Congress. While the covert program was reportedly an effort to assassinate al Qaeda leaders, Time reports, “The program could have required the Agency to spy on Americans.”

Yesterday, President Obama held a meeting with various Jewish leaders to assuage some lingering concerns that “he is being too tough on Israel and too soft on Iran.” Jeremy Ben-Ami, executive director of J Street said Obama “did a masterful job of pushing while hugging” in the meeting. “He was very clear that this is a moment that has to be seized and he intends to seize it.’’

President Barack Obama said over the weekend that he would like to tackle the military’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy “sooner rather than later.” In an interview with CNN, the president signaled that he would be pushing to “change,” rather than “repeal” the ban.

House Democrats are expected to “unveil the details of a sweeping reform measure” today “that would drastically revamp the country’s health care system.” The introduction of the proposal was delayed last week, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said yesterday that “in order for us to be on schedule, we have to roll out our legislation this week.”

“In a rare burst of public frustration,” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said yesterday that “she could not announce a new director for the United States Agency for International Development because the candidate was stuck in a lengthy vetting process.” “It’s frustrating beyond words,” Clinton said, adding that the process is a “nightmare” and “ridiculous.”

Iraqis were jubilant yesterday as the country’s “itinerant national soccer team, displaced for years by war, finally returned to Baghdad on Monday night to play a home match at home.” The stadium was “filled past capacity and genuinely festive like nothing Baghdad had experienced in years,” as the team won a 4-0 victory over a Palestinian team.

Steve Rattner is stepping down “as President Obama’s chief adviser on the troubled automobile industry at a time when an investigation into his former Wall Street firm’s role in a scandal involving public pension funds has intensified.” But it is unclear if his departure “is directly connected to the inquiry, or whether he felt that it was time to leave because” his role had come to “its natural end.”

And finally: With all the important issues facing the country, Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS) is on a crusade against…mermaids. Late last week, Brownback introduced the “Human-Animal Hybrid Prohibition Act of 2009,” banning “part-human, part-animal creatures, which are created in laboratories, and blur the line between species.” Chris Harris of Media Matters Action Network responds, “I can confidently say that the potential future existence of mermaids and Minotaurs are not a pressing concern… for anyone.”

Um, how about cancelling the 187 that are funded but not needed?

Question: How many Americans can get one year of healthcare with the money earmarked for building and maintaining 187 F-22s?

How about a bounty on any Cheney-like subhumans?

Sotomayor made a very effective opening presentation. In fact, she pre-empted a number of the “tough” questions Republicans are likely to ask. She can effectively answer those questions by referring back to her opening statement, almost making the question look stupid. She is well on her way to confirmation.

Okay, President Wordsmith, just what would “change” with respect to dismissing service members for their sexuality, or keeping otherwise eligible citizens from joining solely because of sexual preference? It’s either “legal” or it’s not.

Of course, the same logic could be used with respect to investigations of war crimes and intentially misleading Congress.

I think we have to concede one point to Prwd; back in June the President’s visit was announced as a town meeting (you can find press releases from June 24) and it has since been changed to a speech, in which he will be announcing a new policy initiative relating to community colleges.

But the math on Universal Health care doesn’t stop there.

To be fair and accurate, we must also look at the cost of keeping our current health care status quo: $65-130 billion per year.

In other words, the net cost of changing to Universal Health Care is -$31 to -$61 billion per year. NOW do you understand why the health care industry is dead-set against Universal Health Care?

But, yes, if the current cost of healthcare were factored out of all aspects of our economy it currently permeates (the cost of goods sold, for example) the true cost of our current system is closer to $2,000 billion. These CEOs and lobbyists are getting hundreds of millions in bonuses and spending over a million dollars per day to strong-arm congressmen and women into preserving the status quo. Hey, what’s with the vote up vote down buttons. Anyone else notice? Not one Vote up for anyone. What am I missing?
    ____________________________________________________________

The new “vote up, vote down” system appeared yesterday afternoon, and was confusing to all of at first, too.

Here’s how it works. Instead of “recommend” (the old way), you can now register a positive reaction OR a negative reaction to a post. The field has three distinct parts: A green button with the words “Vote Up”, a red button with the words “Vote Down”, and a number in parentheses.

It’s this number that’s confusing. Because it appears right after the words “Vote Down”, it looks like it’s the number of negative votes. But it’s really a total of all the votes combined — a “Vote Up” registers +1, and each “Vote Down” registers -1. So if I post something that five people voted up and one person voted down, my number will look like this: (4). If a troll posts something everybody hates, his number will probably look something like this: (-12).

One bonus of this system is that when total of a particular post reaches a certain negative level, the entire post disappears — replaced with a comment that says “This comment has been voted down. Click to read.” We’re not sure where this level is yet, but it appears to be somewhere between (-10) and (-12).

It didn’t take me long to get used to it. It won’t take you long, either, I bet.

Supporters of a case that disputes the legitimacy of Barack Obama’s presidency claimed a small victory today when U.S. District Judge David O. Carter told them to fix their paperwork and that he would listen to “the merits” of their case. But others present for the hearing Monday at the federal courthouse in Santa Ana stressed that the case remains a long way from ever getting a full airing in court and may never get to that point. [...]

Perhaps because of that history, Orly Taitz, the lawyer who filed the current suit, was greatly cheered by Monday’s hearing. “He’s very determined to hear the case on the merits,” Taitz said, referring to the judge. “He stated, the country needs to know if Mr. Obama is legitimate, if he can legitimately stay in the White House.”

  86. Doodlebug Shayne says:

Hi Fred, nice to see you.

  87. Doodlebug Shayne says:

DADT allowed people to serve if they were gay as long as they didn’t tell. Before that I believe gays were not allowed to serve at all. Therefore if you repeal DADT that means gays aren’t allowed to serve at all as before. That’s why there needs to be a major change not just a repeal I believe.

  88. Fred says:

Hi Shayne, I’m still around. Busy lately with family and work. Good to read you and all the others…..

Fred, I repeatedly ask you to ignore my posts and you repeatedly request “bite me”. That speaks loudly.

And I have repeatedly asked you not to present op-ed pieces as news or fact and you repeatedly ignore my request.

That speaks loudly and I’m not the only one who finds your tactics to be dishonest.

You post, I respond. that’s why it’s called a blog. If you post bullshit, I get to call it bullshit and say why. It seems fair to me so you just continue and so will I.

How much do you get paid?

  91. fletc3her says:

Oh, the CIA was trying to assassinate somebody, nevermind. As if. The CIA surely has more than one covert operation going at the same time. During the Bush/Cheney years I’m sure they had hundreds and I’m sure Cheney wanted them all kept out of sight. Trotting out one program which they can use to paint their opponents as “soft on defense” is just typical of how they cherry pick otherwise top secret details in order to poison the public debate.

Dick Cheney is one of the bastards who was supposed to be protecting this country when thousands of Americans were killed. His is the worst national security record of any administration. No amount of trying to assassinate bin Laden and, need I mention, failing even to do that, is going to make history reconsider the poor judgement of his conduct.

I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised that with the full might of the U.S. military and intelligence services Dick Cheney couldn’t assassinate one guy. He is pathetic even in the failures of his excesses.

    Jeff Bovine says:
Katy at 103, that’s the same link I provided.

NOW you tell me… how could i know?
    .

    shayne -

Taitz said, referring to the judge. “He stated, the country needs to know if Mr. Obama is legitimate, if he can legitimately stay in the White House.”

so, taitz is lying… not just spinning, twisting… lying.

    imagine that…

  93. spencers mom says:

Shayne @ 106, I know you know this, but there have always been gay people in the military. It wasn’t that they weren’t allowed to serve before DADT, they’ve never been “allowed” to serve. All DADT did was make it impermissible to outright “ask” a soldier if he/she was homosexual, and everyone turned a blind eye as long as the service person in question didn’t “tell” on him/herself.

One of my best friends was a front line Marine in ‘Nam and he’s gay. They didn’t seem to care then, either, until the rise of the vocal, judgemental Fungelicaliban.

    PEACE

What’s not news on TP? Carlyle Group bundler William Kennard was responsible for over $500,000 in donations to the Obama campaign. Insiders leak his appointment as EU ambassador.

    http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=auNhbYYP4grw

If Bush did it, it would be story 1.

It’s OK if our party does it. That’s clear from the legions of TP enforcers and apologists.

  95. Fred says:

State of dirision, your right wing rag doesn’t present facts. Just because someone worked for carlyle doesn’t make them a bush.

Obama has better judgment than bush or any goper so I will go along with his choice and for whatever reason.

You act like this ambassadorship was something really important……sad little puppy.

I guess when you have nothing you do what you do.

Just got a catalog in the mail from http://www.HistoricAviation.com
On page 41, there is a 12″ tall figure that you can order.
George Chimpy Bush in his “top gun’ wannabe flight suit.

I’m getting my husband one for target practice. I’ve been away with our pigs and am just seeing the vote up/down. I love it! I can disagree with a troll without resorting to snide attacks which often go against my better nature.

  97. Doodlebug Shayne says:

spencers mom, I guess I didn’t put it correctly but that’s what I meant. I think what President Obama intends is that gay people should be allowed to serve openly and repealing DADT alone won’t do that.

  98. Doodlebug Shayne says:

katy, here’s the article I read on the nutjob birther Orly Taitz.

  99. Doodlebug Shayne says:

Fred, stateofderision doesn’t seem to understand that if we wanted to read his propaganda we would click on his name and go to his site. Of course he waited until this thread got cold or he’d have been voted out of here.

  100. stateofthedivision says:

WhiteHouseforSale tracked Bush Pioneers and Rangers. Bloomberg is a business news site. What about their information do you challenge?

Attack the source, vilify the poster. Sadly predictable. I went against my better instincts replying to you. Have fun with the voting buttons!

Goldman Sachs made $2.7 billion in net income for the second quarter, most if it from their trading operations.

They set aside $6.65 billion for compensation in the quarter. Wall Street greed is back. The more things change, the more they stay the same…

For those still interested in Frances Townsend, TP used to be, there’s news. She was appointed to the National Security Preparedness Group, a repackaged 9-11 Commission.
