spencers mom, I guess I didn’t put it correctly but that’s what I meant. I think what President Obama intends is that gay people should be allowed to serve openly and repealing DADT alone won’t do that.

Shayne @ 106, I know you know this, but there have always been gay people in the military. It wasn’t that they weren’t allowed to serve before DADT, they’ve never been “allowed” to serve. All DADT did was make it impermissible to outright “ask” a soldier if he/she was homosexual, and everyone turned a blind eye as long as the service person in question didn’t “tell” on him/herself.

One of my best friends was a front line Marine in ‘Nam and he’s gay. They didn’t seem to care then, either, until the rise of the vocal, judgemental Fungelicaliban.

Oh, the CIA was trying to assassinate somebody, nevermind. As if. The CIA surely has more than one covert operation going at the same time. During the Bush/Cheney years I’m sure they had hundreds and I’m sure Cheney wanted them all kept out of sight. Trotting out one program which they can use to paint their opponents as “soft on defense” is just typical of how they cherry pick otherwise top secret details in order to poison the public debate.

Dick Cheney is one of the bastards who was supposed to be protecting this country when thousands of Americans were killed. His is the worst national security record of any administration. No amount of trying to assassinate bin Laden and, need I mention, failing even to do that, is going to make history reconsider the poor judgement of his conduct.

I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised that with the full might of the U.S. military and intelligence services Dick Cheney couldn’t assassinate one guy. He is pathetic even in the failures of his excesses.

DADT allowed people to serve if they were gay as long as they didn’t tell. Before that I believe gays were not allowed to serve at all. Therefore if you repeal DADT that means gays aren’t allowed to serve at all as before. That’s why there needs to be a major change not just a repeal I believe.
