This past Sunday, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez broadcasted a series of anti-Obama comments over his “Alo Presidente!” show, at one point even toying with the possibility that President Obama might be assassinated. The Hill quotes Chavez:
On the “imperial” U.S. forces that Chavez thinks killed JFK: “I hope they do not kill Obama, because Obama is biting off more than he can chew.”
Chavez also demanded that Obama “stop dithering” on the military takeover of Honduras. Obama, however, has strongly condemned the Honduran coup and “diffused” Chavez’ charges. Earlier this year, Chavez called Obama a “poor ignoramus” who has the “same stench as Bush.” Obama, however, has vowed to turn a new page in hemispheric relations and it seems that, for the most part, Latin American leaders and their constituents believe him.
Well, it is a possibility. If they did it to Kennedy, they can do it to Obama. We all know that.
July 15th, 2009 at 5:40 pmAs fo rthe rest of his comments, he just wants Obama to be as over the top as he is, sorry hugo, not the President’s style.
I think he might be a little jealous…
So Hugo Chavez is now channeling Pat Robertson, only Robertson, lovely man of god that he is, was calling for Chavez’s assassination.
Hugo, is this because he didn’t send you one of his books?
PEACE
July 15th, 2009 at 5:42 pmWait — I thought the trolls all said that Obama was Hugo’s butt-boy?
Could they have been wrong about that?
July 15th, 2009 at 5:42 pmchavez is such a silly little man.
July 15th, 2009 at 5:43 pma veiled threat against the president of the united states from a tinpot third world dictator.
HugeEgo’s got a point. And it’s not the one he covers with that cute little cap.
July 15th, 2009 at 5:43 pmSTFU hugo… keep out of our affairs or we may get involved in yours again!
July 15th, 2009 at 5:45 pmThis presents quite a dilemma for faux news. Do they show the enemy of their enemy bashing their enemy? Too hard, they won’t air it.
July 15th, 2009 at 5:46 pmWhat does a third world leader have to do to get attention these days?
July 15th, 2009 at 5:47 pmnow that the price of crude oil is depressed, hugo the mouth might want to play nicey-nice with us. it will only be a matter of time before he’s begging for humanitarian aid from us to feed his people.
July 15th, 2009 at 5:48 pmChavez seems uncomfortable dealing with a US President who doesn’t come off as an ignorant cowboy and who makes nice with Latin American leaders outside of Columbia. The threat of the return of positive US influence in his region combined with Venezuela’s diminished wealth from lower oil revenue seems to have tinpot Hugo on the verge of some serious acting out.
July 15th, 2009 at 5:51 pmfor a modest travel fee I’d go there and stomp his greasy butt into the ground
July 15th, 2009 at 5:51 pmI think some people are reading this wrong. Chavez is saying that he hopes the conservative powers in the US do not kill Obama. Like they did JFK, RFK, MLK, and Malcolm X.
July 15th, 2009 at 5:52 pmMethinks Hugo misses his foil. Obama just steals all his widdle thundery thtuff.
July 15th, 2009 at 5:55 pmChavez was pointing out a few things which are controversial but still in question among knowledgeable people in this country and certainly around the world. 1) JFKs’ death 2)the role of the coup leaders of Guatemala 3)Is Obama response to a changing Southern America going to be as reactionary as previous administrations or will he embrace a different future, etc. Hugo is an imperfect messenger but so is the message of “My country, love it or leave it.”
July 15th, 2009 at 5:56 pmKeith, I appreciate Hugo’s concern, althought I doubt that it’s genuine.
July 15th, 2009 at 5:56 pmObama must have have swapped out the nerve gas in the book during the photo opp.
Someone add magic/sleight of hand to the president’s resume.
July 15th, 2009 at 5:58 pmStop it Hugo! You’re making OUR knuckledraggers drool.
July 15th, 2009 at 6:00 pmChavez’s hyperboles aside, he is correct to point out that Obama’s stance toward Latin America is not very different from ALL past U.S. presidents toward our unfortunate neighbors to the South. Obama did not “strongly condemn” the Honduran coup. Moreover, Obama has not even called it a “coup”. He simply said that it was illegal, which is a toothless way of saying that we don’t like it, but we’ll have to let Honduras work it out. see http://www.zmag.org/znet/viewArticle/22009 for more info.
July 15th, 2009 at 6:00 pmPlease don’t act like the morons at the conservative blogs over the past eight years by idiotically accepting everything Obama says. Progressives need to push him on issues or he will compromise on them. Our policy toward Latin America is one issue. Health care reform is another (where’s the single-payer option??!!!?)
Another nut-ball who ranks up there with Kim and Achmahh(How do you spell that Irani guys name?)
July 15th, 2009 at 6:00 pmRU, I could also agree with linkwray.
July 15th, 2009 at 6:01 pmnot to worry….Obama is fully entrenched with the corporatists. He will betray and rail against Chavez just as soon as he’s told to.
July 15th, 2009 at 6:02 pmdannylauve says:
And for good money, I’d stomp YOUR greasy little heinie.
July 15th, 2009 at 6:02 pmI think some people are reading this wrong. Chavez is saying that he hopes the conservative powers in the US do not kill Obama. Like they did JFK, RFK, MLK, and Malcolm X.
July 15th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
Agree and also my fears.
July 15th, 2009 at 6:03 pmUncle Ho says:
Stop it Hugo! You’re making OUR knuckledraggers drool.
Suddenly Citgo is the new place to be seen in the red states.
July 15th, 2009 at 6:05 pmWOW it’s really amazing how the world really sees America as an instigator in everything.
Since Obama has taken office none of their claims are true and it’s surprising to them. Like with Iran, where they were trying to insinuate that America was involved in their elections when we were not. Now you got Chavez doing the same thing.
paleolib @ 10 you are 100% correct the world is so use to seeing America bully it’s way into situations and now you got Obama who is totally the opposite and they don’t know how to handle that.
Chavez is anti-American because of the Bush years which is understandable but yet his current remarks are somewhat skewed and mixed.
July 15th, 2009 at 6:07 pmThe way things are going in Venezuela, Chavez should be more
July 15th, 2009 at 6:09 pmconcerned about his own mortality.
” Earlier this year, Chavez called Obama a “poor ignoramus” who has the “same stench as Bush.”
sorry, but i can’t see the “he’s concerned about obama” perspective. hugo chavez is much like tub-o-lard rush, making sensationalistic statements in order to garner some free press.
July 15th, 2009 at 6:09 pmBut…but…but, the Republic Fascist Party says that Obama and Chavez are pals…
….could they be lying?
Naw, couldn’t be Conservatives never lie…or do they?
July 15th, 2009 at 6:10 pmThe headline of this post unfairly seems to imply that President Chavez is advocating assassinating President Obama.
July 15th, 2009 at 6:12 pm#29
I agree, the headline is very poorly wriTten and may give readers the wrong impression.
July 15th, 2009 at 6:17 pmIn no way is Chavez advocating violence against President Obama.
ranus69 says:
WOW it’s really amazing how the world really sees America as an instigator in everything.
But, the US DID instigate a coup that replaced Chavez for a short time a few years back. Also, about another 40 incursions to control everything to the south of us.
July 15th, 2009 at 6:18 pmI read this site a great deal, and i tend to agree with the authors and the perspectives and the viewpoints. However, i had never registered for the site – but i had to comment here.
I find this piece to be very misleading. Chavez has gone on the record as an admirer of Kennedy and his Alliance for Progress – a controversial position for a Latin American Leftist to take, considering some of the unsavory U.S. practices towards its southern brethren during that time (the Bay of Pigs barely scratches the surface). He has generally shown a sympathy for Obama, a sympathy that demonstrates an understanding of Obama as someone with progressive values, who is confined by the system he has chosen to work within, and weighed down by America’s undeniably brutal imperial history. He has generally eschewed the “Old wine, new bottles” analysis that most Leftists (including myself) would tend to greet a Democratic administration with. He sees something different in Obama, just as he sees something different in Kennedy, and i would say – as someone who was a victim of US intelligence operations aimed at deposing him – that he is very much within reason to make these comments.
It is still common for people (even progressives) to call Chavez “anti-American” and refer to him as an “enemy.” He opposes imperial domination and US hegemony. Those positions only equate to anti-Americanism if you believe America can only exist with its boot on the neck of the global south.

July 15th, 2009 at 6:39 pmGot to agree with Keith @ 12.
July 15th, 2009 at 6:41 pmIt appears the monied powers are running scared with all their lying ads, pitchmen , and blocking of info on Swiss Bank accounts.
As for “biting off more than he can chew”, I’m assuming he means Obama’s policy of pursuing diplomatic relations rather
July 15th, 2009 at 6:56 pmthan calling nations “axis of evil”, and giving ultimatums of
being either with us, or with the terrorists.
Chavez probably misses the attention he got when Dumbya was prez and Hugo was arch-enemy. He’s just kicking up stones now, trying to get a headline.

I was referring to Obama’s current position that the US will not meddle in other countries affairs.

You are right about Honduras and Iran. And Obama truly may not want to intervene in other countries’ affairs, but the rest of the world does not know this. They may be going by what has happened throughout history.

July 15th, 2009 at 7:53 pmExcerpt From TP’s terms of use:
July 15th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Obama is a “poor ignoramus”?
Chavez sounds more and more like a right wing jackass every day.
July 15th, 2009 at 10:48 pmChavez is not perfect. Obama is not perfect. Both have good rhetorical skills. Based on actions taken so far I’ll take Chavez as the leader of the two on progressive action.
July 15th, 2009 at 11:10 pmHi Tim Vaculik:
July 16th, 2009 at 1:20 amWhat are you whining about?
To the sap who agrees that Obama is a “poor ignoramus” here’s some facts for you.
Chavez graduated near the bottom at the Venezuelan Academy of Military Sciences with a degree in Military “Arts” and “Science”.
Obama graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law.
If either of the two is an ignoramus it’s not Obama.
July 16th, 2009 at 1:37 amWhy would you want to attract attention?
July 16th, 2009 at 8:09 amIn the end, that a president.
but he wasn’t suggesting this would be a good thing.
he was pointing out that the same capital-military interests whose power over the popular democratic electorate was threatened by JFK may be under threat as a result of BO’s willingness to speak out against the US history of foreign and domestic oppression in the name of free-market fundamentalism and exceptionalist military authoritarianism.
did Podesta hire francis fukuyama to write this headline? not sure why TP would speciously suggest this statement indicates that chavez opposes obama.
July 16th, 2009 at 9:41 amDav78 – exactly! It’s even more distressing that so many commentors on this site would buy such a facile viewpoint.
July 16th, 2009 at 9:43 amwhoever wrote this headline needs be fired for either of two reasons. 1. For knowingly misleading what he said, or 2. For being too stupid to understand what he said. It´s also embarassing to see everyone jump on it like that.
July 16th, 2009 at 11:13 amI for one like chavez. If the state owned media loathe him then i am all for him. Nobody really knows what kind of person he is. CNN is basically owned by the CIA, it´s just a imperial owned propaganda machine. whatever you hear or read about him in our media is a lie basically.
I know he was one of the first people to call out the bush administration and american imperialism before it was popular. He supports using the resources of his own country for the people and not multinational corporations. He basically supports the poor people and not the rich oligarchy.
He´s saying the same people who killed jfk, bobby kennedy, john lennon, martin luther king, osho, tupac shakur etc. etc. etc. Anyone who exposes the truth not only risks being killed but more than likely will be killed. what´s wrong with the truth.
Chavez will do or say anything to stay in power. He is like a fly at an outdoor picnic. Just a little annoying but nothing to ruin your day over. I think Chavez needs to worry much more about his safety than Obama.
