In a Senate Environment and Public Works Committee hearing today, National Black Chamber of Commerce CEO Harry Alford accused Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) of being a racist. Alford, an opponent of the American Clean Energy and Security Act, attacked Boxer for being “racial” when she cited the NAACP’s support of clean energy and climate legislation. Saying he took “offense as an African American and a veteran,” he asked why she didn’t quote an “Asian” instead:
All that’s condescending, and I don’t like it. It’s racial. I don’t like it. I take — I take offense to it. As an African-American and a veteran of this country, I take offense to that. You’re quoting some other black man — why don’t you quote some other Asian or some — I mean, you’re being racial here. And I think you’re getting on a path here that’s going to explode, in the Post.
Watch the exchange:
Alford, whose organization has received at least $275,000 from ExxonMobil, spoke on behalf of the “black community” in his opening statement. As Boxer noted, it seems “relevant” that other organizations with “a deep understanding” of the “black community,” such as NAACP and 100 Black Men of Atlanta see the threat of global warming and the opportunity in a clean energy future.
Let me get this straight… he is calling her racist, because she quoted a different black person?
July 16th, 2009 at 5:41 pmThat is just fooking ridiculous… what drugs are Alford taking to make himself so delusional?
Harry Alford sounds like Michael Steele — in over his head. At least he caught himself with his “Asian” remark as undercutting his point. Maybe Alford needs to question why it is necessary to have a separate but equal black Chamber of Commerce where he can be used.
July 16th, 2009 at 5:42 pmAlford is a good little repiggie, and was trotted out by the nervous repiggie white guys in the Senate just to show how “racially enlightened” the repiggies are.
Just listening to Alford made me feel embarrassed for him.
July 16th, 2009 at 5:44 pm“You’re quoting some other black man — why don’t you quote some other Asian or some”
Excuse me, but how is this NOT racist?
July 16th, 2009 at 5:44 pmThis is touchy. Bur Boxer is one of the most Liberal members of the Senate. Calling her a racist is not espousing his cause.
July 16th, 2009 at 5:44 pmNothing like a huge check from Exxon to help form an opinion. Love how throwing some racism in there helps deflect from the fact that the man is bought and paid for by Big Oil.

Harry Alford = Daryll?
July 16th, 2009 at 5:47 pmAlford is making a big mistake throwing the racism card. Just a couple of weeks ago, a few miles from my house, Young Black and Hispanics kids were basically kicked out of a swim club because “They changed the ‘complexion’ of the club. Now THAT is racism. This guys rant was Big Business stamping their feet because of Clean Energy. Alford is hurting people who are the real victims of racism.

Another Repignofascist reveals how completely removed from reality he really is. I wonder if he thinks this comment is “racial” also? Would he have claimed that Boxer made a “racial” comment if she had quoted the Mormon Tabernacle Choir? They seem to all be white.

July 16th, 2009 at 6:01 pmAlford sounded ridiculous in front of Senator Boxer. Boxer countering with testimony with support from another group that represents blacks that is relevant and not racist.
Now, I have to ask Alford why his organization was happy to collect a donation from ExxonMobil [one of the biggest polluters in this country and biggest robbers in profits right next to Wall Street]in a heartbeat. Alford is an opponent of the American Clean Energy and Security Act yet NAACP supports the act. It doesn’t take a rocket science to figure it out that we still have a division in this country and these two organization representing blacks. This is a prime example: Two different organizations on two different sides. One black organization is doing the dirty work for the oil companies to continue to reap profits. The other black organization isn’t.
July 16th, 2009 at 6:02 pmUmmm, what’s the name of his organization? The Chamber of Commerce? No, the BLACK Chamber of Commerce.
Isn’t that a little racial singling yourself out like that? No, it identifies your group with people of common interests and concerns.

According to the link, Boxer was citing a joint NWF/NAACP resolution. The National Wildlife Federation’s ‘Fair Climate Project’ also names the Women’s Environment and Development Organization as a partner.
I bet Alford didn’t like this paragraph in the resolution…assuming he even read it:
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED THAT, the NAACP will call on our nation’s elected leaders to ensure that the response to climate change can take a higher ground than business as usual – one that ensures that we capture real public benefits from the new energy economy;

I don’t know whose worse. You or Boxer — or Sen. Sessions who pulled the same kind of tactic this week during the confirmation hearing. Hmm… And, come to think of it, Sessions curious Puerto Rican, Puerto Rican routine didn’t receive the kind of deference here at TP that Boxer is getting. To me, to whatever extent the same posters are reacting differently, reflects some kind of weird, mindless partisanship if not some other ill-conceived notions.
Oh, Mathazar, since you don’t know… That’s not the NAACP’s famous expression.
PS:
Game Of Life… I didn’t see your post until I started mine. Anyway, thanks for trying to explain what’s at issue here. What people need to understand is that African-Americans get this kind of stuff countless number of times throughout their lives and there’s a long, nasty and unambiguously racist history of this.
The issue is not whether Boxer “is a racist.” The issue is what is it in the minds of Whites like Sessions and, now, Boxer (mere televised examples of stuff that happens all the time) that drives them, perhaps unconsciously, to think that one Black person/org (the NAACP) should be a model or example that others (Alford’s findings) should find relevant or follow.
Boxer didn’t just cite one Black organization. She cited two and, to me, acted like she was making some kind of point to Alford. What made it worse is that it took her a while to catch a clue. In fact, she was surprised that Alford would be offended and obviously didn’t have the capacity or, as they say “empathy” to listen. She thought she was being clever as indicated by her repeated and patronizing (and, yes, “racial”) use of the term “proud”… You know, because that’s what minorities are — they are “proud” of each other. Exactly what that had to do with the hearing, she and no one else here can explain. Also, no one can explain why the NAACP, in name alone (and its org’s resolution), was a relevant point in terms of the pro or con aspect of the hearing. What kind of relevant expertise does the NAACP or 1000 Black men have? That was Alford’s point.
And for the person (P.D.) who said something about Alford calling Boxer a racist (something he technically did not do — racial is often used to only convey that undue attention to race is given in a matter) was not helpful to his “cause” and acting like Boxer’s “one of the most Liberal” cred is somehow relevant… Well, that’s stuff Black people hear a lot, too.
(Link to TP thread when Sessions did it too.)

At first glance Bozo The Neoclown, Jim Wolf359 ad P.D. posted on both this thread and the Sessions Puerto Rican, Puerto Rican thread but had different and inexplicably different reactions to Sessions vs. Boxer. No matter what you think about Alford, there should be little difference in how Boxer and Sessions employing this curious ‘model minority’ tactic is viewed. That’s like the whole reason for the “rule of law”, objectivity aspiration… and I have little, if any, affection for Black Republicans or Black political, party/ideological conservatives.
And the idea that Boxer’s “Liberal” cred/status invalidates Alford’s reaction is like excusing Sessions and other Republicans with his type of sentiments, let alone his type of history, because of a favorable vote or two they’ve made or the Republican party being the “Party of Lincoln”, though a nuanced or an extent and degree view of Boxer’s full body of work, so to speak, should necessarily be considered along with the fact that she is not perfect.
July 16th, 2009 at 10:41 pmI’m really surprised at all of you would vote down the comments that suggest her argument was misguided. Come on people, don’t follow blindly. I love Babs, she’s not a racist in the slightest, but it was a racial argument to make, and she was being condescending. He has a point.
July 16th, 2009 at 11:42 pmA ‘token’ is someone appointed to a visible but impotent position in order to improve image.
The Republican Party likes doing that, and subsequently trumpeting about how non-racist they are. Condoleeza Rice, Colin Powell, Michael Steele, Clarence thomas–all appointments.
(I wouldn’t call Thomas a ‘token’ because his position has real power. But it’s still an appointment.)
How many people of color do Republicans elect?
How many black Senators–zero.
Black Representatives? Zero.
Black Governors? Zero.
The leadership may cynically appoint black faces, but the rank and file don’t elect them. For a reason.
You want to see a list of all the Brack Republican elected officials?
http://www.aarlc.org/blackgop/elected.shtml
It’s one page long, including judges and members of city councils.
July 17th, 2009 at 1:58 amArguments have been made that Thomas’ behavior on the court, including a lot of silence, amount to him being in an “impotent position” and, certainly, one harmful to policies favored by the Black political consensus/majority.
On a different note — any Republican or Democratic politician/judge who is out of step with their party/constituents the vast majority of the time would be an issue and definitely not considered as representing them; hence, the tokenism in Thomas’ case.

July 17th, 2009 at 8:17 amTo set the record straight:
- Harry Alford is a registered Independent.
- The National Black Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) is a non-partisan group. They are endorsing the Democratic National Health Care plan. Harry Alford supports this plan.
- The NBCC is a business/commerce-centric organization. The NAACP and 100 Black Men of Atlanta are not. Harry A. Alford is right- if she wanted to make her point and not be racist, why wouldn’t she compare the findings to a different commerce-centric group such as the US Chamber of Commerce, or a different ethnic business org such as the National Hispanic Chamber of Commerce? Because it appears almost ALL these groups are also opposed to the bill.
Barbara Boxer’s offers no reasoning or rationale for comparing the NBCC’s findings vs. the NAACP’s or the 100 Black Men of Atlanta’s findings. It can ONLY be based on the fact that these are “black organizations”. Like it or not folks, Barbara Boxer is being RACIST.
- To defend her only because there is a “D-” in front of her name tells me many of the respondents on this site will sacrfice any ethical/moral belief they may have and blindly defend someone’s behavior regardless of the act simply to protect one of their “team members”. If that is you, shame on you.

Secretary of State is an impotent position?
July 17th, 2009 at 2:01 pm“republicans hate facts” said (with sissy whine):
f*KKK off NQuest you IDIOT.
Nquest says: You apparently got me confused with somebody who’s affected by little childish fits of emotion (yours). Yelling “IDIOT”, ironically, because you’re too much of an idiot to make me “f*KKK off” by actually raising a substantive or direct point (not to be confused with a sissy whine — aka cowards plea) in opposition to what I’ve said is an invitation for me to laugh at you.
As for our friend who thought the famous expression, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste,” was one promoted by the NAACP… Well, I’ll help you out. That expression is promoted by the UNCF, not the NAACP.
July 17th, 2009 at 2:05 pmIt’s only racist if you are a black liberal.
July 18th, 2009 at 12:47 amDo you folks realize how bad you sound. Most of these comments are undeniably elitest and racist. Have you reached such a height in your towers that you can’t look at what you are saying? Just a reality check, but hate is hate. You really should try some introspection. No offense but … dang.

DV8tion2u: These guys don’t care about how bad they sound. Fair minded people on both sides of the aisle realize these guys and gals are just vile and disgusting. If you ever make a valid case against them they just shout (vote) your comment down. Even if they ever had a valid point it wouldn’t matter because most people don’t take seriously the hate filled rants they spew forth.
