Graham: Republicans select political appointees on the basis of race.

Capping off a day of unusual candor, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) explained to right-wing affirmative action opponent Linda Chavez, a witness at today’s Sotomayor confirmation hearings, that Republicans routinely make hiring decisions on the basis of race. According to Graham, “politics is politics in the sense that I know that Republicans sit down and think, ‘ok, we’ve got some power now. Let’s make sure that we let the whole country know the Republican party is not just a party of short white guys.’” And then, in a comment perhaps reflecting why Graham is supporting Sotomayor, he added:

What I want to tell the country is that Republicans very much do sit down and think about political picks and appointments in a political sense to try to show that we’re a party that looks at all Americans and wants to give an opportunity. And that’s just life. And that’s not a bad thing.

Watch it:

Graham’s comments come after a surprisingly friendly exchange between himself and Sotomayor in which he told her that he believes that she is “not an activist.” In other words, it seems very likely that Graham will vote to put Sotomayor on the Supreme Court.

What was in Graham’s water today?

  2. majii says:

Graham and the republicans have one major problem. They say one thing but do something entirely different. Lying and hypocrisy are their constant companions.

  3. WillWrite4Food says:

Sessions and Kyl then battered Graham with questions about his “short white guys” remark.

  4. The Moderate Squad says:

Of course minorities are all too dumb to wrap their minds around the concept of tokenisn, right Lindsey?

I’m not sure but today I’m really glad to be a tall white guy.

Well, that explains Michael Steele then. Too bad Steele really doesn’t seem to be worthy of the opportunity…

    Crack cocaine, perhaps. LOL

Off the subject but I have been laughing all day at Beckee boy’s “hissy fit” from his radio show. That makes for a great ringback tone. LOL

Sodium pentathol i.e. truth serum. Or, Lindsey had a mighty fine tap dance with the next stall over.

While I don’t think Lil Linds intended to convey the message, he basically acknowledged that the GNOP makes decisions based on how it “looks” rather than substance. Like we didn’t know that with Vagina Palin and Da Man Steele.

    PEACE

    He’s snake, can’t be trusted.
I also think that some Democrats are actually closet Republicans… otherwise they wouldn’t get elected if the ran as a Republican.

    Fixed it for ya Lindsay.

So Repugs only want old white dudes on the Supreme Court? Well, DUH!

I get the feeling that Graham`s up to no good. It seems like he is being supportive of Sotomayor. This is out of character for a repug. Any thoughts on what he might be up too.

He’ll be apologizing to Rush by Monday.

  15. Tired Of Fighting says:

I think he may need to tell this to the rest of the so-called Republicans because they dont know what the hell he’s talking about. Republicans see race? Yep they sure do, when they want to keep someone down.

Funny, that doesn’t sound like the Republican Party represented by “Drug” Rush Limbaugh to me. Which universe is this Republican Party Graham is speaking of residing?

No one said anything about “short”.

I think Graham must have realized the damage that his party’s line of questioning is doing to their chance of outreaching to Hispanics.

    Republicans take a hypocritical oath.

  21. okie dokie says:

    What is Graham’s point?

That he’s almost not a bigot? Well, no, really, he loves being a bigot so much he won’t go that far, but, since the nominee is a minority which means he must hate her, but, he would really like her if she wasn’t a minority, but, she has to be a minority because of the anti-discrimination laws that he hates, but, he doesn’t hate her even though he’s white and she’s not, and it’s such an important and prominent lifetime appointment she might be more worthy of if she was white and he could trust her more if she was more white,
    and Ken Starr likes her?

    Kenneth “Whitewater” “Monica Lewinsky” Starr?

    Translator please!

  23. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

Correct me if I am wrong, but if the Republicans are hiring people based on race, they are breaking the law.

Sounds to me like Graham just confessed that the Republican Party has been violating the law regarding hiring based on race rather than ability.

I think a supoena is in order to find out exactly which Republicans have violated employment non-discrimination laws.

Too late, Bubba. We got it all on tape, republitards! Not only have they totally crushed their chances of appealing to Latinos, their racist, sexist blitherings have cost them all other minorities, women, young people, LGBT, rational men.
The only folks left are KKK members and people in comas.

  25. Doc Rock says:

Graham trying to distance himself from Jeff Sessions?

  26. Doom Siren says:

So Graham admits that republicans are basically racists.

And we are surprised about this…how?

  27. MapleStreet says:

Hearing the clip, it sounds to me that he was likely digging a deep pit, dancing the witness around it, and hoping the witness would inadvertently jump in.

If the witness jumped in, it could be taken as Sotamayor jumping in by proxy.

I’ve heard Mark Sanford set it up so Graham and Rush have a whole weekend in the Dominican to work out all their problems.

The cover story is that Lindsey is touring the lost colony of Atlantis.

  29. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

Rush isn’t interested in Lindsey, he’s too old and “used”. Maybe if Graham is naughty enough Boss Hog will bend him over his knee though and give him a sound thrashing. It’ll be good for the two of them to get that out of their systems for awhile.

  30. lvdragonlady says:

In other words, if you ain’t a white male, you are not even considered for a position that you are qualified for.
This is the reason we have affirmative action because the white male just does not understand that you can be qualified for a position and not be one of them.

  31. CitizenE says:

Let me see if I have this correct. In an attempt to deny that women or Latinas have anything unique, thus valueable, to contribute to governance as a result of their background and experience, the first Latina to ever serve on a Presidential cabinet wants to express that she (oh the subtexts) has the same merits as any man. How very white of her.
