Pat Buchanan, thumbs up

ThinkProgress has launched a new Twitter feed. Subscribe to it here.

Last night, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow debated her colleague Pat Buchanan on the role of affirmative action in the Supreme Court nomination of Sonia Sotomayor. When Maddow pointed out that 108 of 110 Supreme Court justices have been white, Buchanan responded, “White men were 100% of the people that wrote the Constitution, 100% of the people that signed the Declaration of Independence, 100% of the people who died at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, probably close to 100% of the people who died at Normandy. This has been a country built basically by white folks.”

In his first speech before the NAACP since taking office, President Obama told the audience that, while “the pain of discrimination is still felt,” there’s “never been less.” He also issued a challenge to African-Americans: “We’ve got to say to our children…you will face challenges [but]…that’s not a reason to get bad grades, that’s not a reason to cut class, that’s not a reason to give up on your education and drop out of school.”

Senators “friendly to labor” have decided to drop card-check, the central provision of a bill that would have made it easier for workers to organize simply by signing cards saying they wanted a union. Several “moderate Democrats opposed the card-check provision as undemocratic.” Instead, “the revised bill would require shorter unionization campaigns and faster elections.”

The House Ways and Means Committee passed a health care reform package that includes a robust public option. The plan includes a surtax on the wealthy to pay for it. “We’re very, very proud of what we’ve done,” Chairman Charles Rangel (D-NY) said. The American Medical Association had endorsed the plan.

The American Conservative Union asked FedEx for a $2 million check in return for the group’s endorsement in a bitter legislative dispute, then flipped and sided with UPS after FedEx refused to pay,” Politico reports. After FedEx turned down the offer, ACU signed on to a letter supporting UPS’ position on legislation that would have FedEx “negotiate union contracts for individual locations.”

The Senate voted yesterday to extend hate crimes legislation to include “people attacked because of their sexual orientation or gender.” The bill will also “make it easier for federal prosecutors to step in when state or local authorities are unable or unwilling to pursue hate crimes.” The House passed a similar bill in April.

A new study from the San Francisco Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and UC, San Francisco “found that more than one-third of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans who enrolled in the veterans health system after 2001 received a diagnosis of a mental health problem, most often post-traumatic stress disorder or depression.” The number of vets with mental health problems “rose steadily the longer they were out of the service.”

Two suicide bombers attacked two luxury hotels in Jakarta, Indonesia early this morning, killing at least eight people and injuring more than 50. “There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attacks on Friday, but initial suspicion is likely to be directed at Jemaah Islamiyah, which the United States government has placed on its list of terrorist organizations.”

Iranian opposition leader, Mir Hussein Moussavi, will attend Friday prayer services today, making his first official appearance since last month’s disputed presidential election. “As word of Mr. Moussavi’s planned appearance spread, opposition supporters vowed to show up in large numbers to the vast prayer hall where Friday’s sermon and prayers will take place. There were reports that green prayer mats — the color of Islam and of Mr. Moussavi’s election campaign — were sold out across the city.” Check out Nico Pitney’s coverage of the Iranian uprising.

And finally: “We’re going to do that crack cocaine thing,” Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) said to a bemused witness at yesterday’s Sotomayor confirmation hearing. The hearing room quickly cracked up. Sessions laughed along with the crowd, saying “I misspoke.” He then clarified to the witness, Wade Henderson of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, that “we’re going to reduce the burden of penalties in some of the crack cocaine cases and make them fair.”

    Pat doesn’t get it.

    -Pat Buchanan

Beyond wingnuttia, Buchanan is still paid handsomely by ‘The Morning Joke’ show on MSNBC. Why?

A White, Southern racist is not, in any way, shape or form, reflective of America’s current demographics. Allowing his 19th century ideas to be broadcast to millions is defying common sense.
He claims only white folks built America. Bullshit! Whites were the property owners, sipping mint juleps while they watched their slaves do the heavy lifting & back breaking work; including building our Capitol.

Rachel basically reamed him. Thank you, Rachel.

Why aren’t there more progressive voices on the 24 hour news channels?

Why are there virtually no news programs that don’t have a reactionary repiggie slant constantly?

Why are these repiggies being shoved down our throats as the only voices of “authority” on anything?

Cracker, pleaze! (Uh oh, that will infuriate b-cup).

I don’t think his last two statistics are correct.
Slaves did fight in the Civil War, and I’m pretty sure “them blacks” were allowed to fight for our country during the second World War. I’m also pretty sure some were killed on D-Day!

I also think his analogy is completely off base. By his reasoning, Major League Baseball shouldn’t have any non-whites participating, because it was originally created by whites, for white players, financed by whites, for the entertainment of whites. Yet, eventually, it realized the error of it’s ways, and allowed “minorities” to play (albeit, it happened way too late, and not without major racial overtones and confrontations, such as the hatred and racism towards Jackie Robinson and Hank Greenberg, among others)

    Fact check for Pat Buchanan:

Subj: Gettysburg National Battlefield Interpretations and Stories.

Dec. 16 2004 — >From Superintendent Latschar, Superintendent of the Gettysburg National Battlefield:

    John_Latschar@nps.gov

    Mr. Moody -

Thank you for your inquiry about our interpretive plans at Gettysburg National Military Park, and the information regarding Richard Poplar. His is an interesting story. It is not altogether unusual, however, since it’s a well-established fact that many Confederate officers and units were accompanied by their personal servants. Some of these servants, like Mr. Poplar, were given honorary military rank, and even sometimes participated in combat, but neither Mr. Poplar nor the others could be regularly and legally enlisted in the Confederate States Army until March of 1865 when the Confederate Congress passed an act authorizing the recruitment of blacks.

At Gettysburg, to answer your question, we intend to include the stories of the thousands of blacks from both the north and south, both slave and free, that were associated with and/or impacted by the Gettysburg Campaign. As you know, this will not include the United States Colored Troops, since they were not at Gettysburg. But it would include the estimated 10,000 slaves who accompanied the Army of Northern Virginia on the Gettysburg Campaign, the free blacks and “contraband” blacks who supported the Army ofthe Potomac, the black Pennsylvania “home guard” reserve unit that was mobilized in reaction to the Confederate advance, the hundreds of free blacks in southern Pennsylvania who fled from the advancing Confederate army for fear of captured and sold south into slavery, and the unfortunate ones to whom that happened.

In short, all of our stories at Gettysburg will be told in context, so that individual stories are woven together to illustrate the larger whole.

I trust that this helps answer your inquiry.

    Regards,

    John Latschar

Bush should be made to watch his veep and henchmen swing before his turn. If he pleads for mercy he should be mocked by the hangman like he did when he ridiculed death row inmate Karla Fay Baker:

“In the week before [Karla Faye Tucker's] execution, Bush says, Bianca Jagger and a number of other protesters came to Austin to demand clemency for Tucker. “Did you meet with any of them?” I ask.

Bush whips around and stares at me. “No, I didn’t meet with any of them,” he snaps, as though I’ve just asked the dumbest, most offensive question ever posed. “I didn’t meet with Larry King either when he came down for it. I watched his interview with [Tucker], though. He asked her real difficult questions, like ‘What would you say to Governor Bush?’ ”

“What was her answer?” I wonder.

“Please,” Bush whimpers, his lips pursed in mock desperation, “don’t kill me.”"

First off a lot of hispanics, asians, and African Americans are members of the working class. It’s not just white archie bunker types. And a lot of the them are in or used to be in UNIONS! Is Pat suddenly pro-union?

Where was pat’s concern for the working class when he was using his student deferments to go to the elitist college Georgetown while the working class was getting shipped off to Vietnam? Where was his concern when his boss Nixon was escalating that war and killing 1000’s of working class soldiers in Cambodia and Laos in addition to Vietnam? Where is his concern for the working class when his fat cat friends are sending working class jobs overseas?

Working class is just code for white in pat’s pea-sized brain.

    Another fact check for Pat:

The entire body of United States Colored Troops evolved out of the Vicksburg Campaign beginning in April and May of 1863. President Lincoln authorized his Army Adjutant General Lorenzo Thomas “to raise as many regiments of blacks as I can,” according to the general’s memoirs. Thomas met with Grant at Milliken’s Bend and gave the orders to formulate 10 black regiments. While seasoned black soldiers from the Louisiana Native Guards were the first to fight against Confederate troops near Pascagoula and Baton Rouge in May, 1863, it was the three black regiments of raw recruits posted at Milliken’s Bend across from Vicksburg that would demonstrate the real fighting prowess of black soldiers.

Designated the African Brigade (or African Descent), the 9th and 11th Louisiana Infantry and the First Mississippi Infantry (African Descent) were forced into battle on June 7, 1863, by the incursion of Confederate forces who outnumbered them two-to-one.

These 1300 troops, along with 160 white soldiers from the 23rd Iowa Regiment, had been posted along the perimeter of the Mississippi, while Grant and his generals crossed over first to engage the Confederates scattered in central Mississippi and then to surround the rest of Vicksburg in preparation for the 47 day Siege that won the battle and ultimately the war for the Union.

One of the things I have always admired about Pat Buchanan (probably the ONLY thing) is that he seems to be an honest man. He speaks his mind, and doesn’t care how offensive his thoughts may be to others.

But while it’s refreshing to hear a politician or pundit give his honest thoughts freely, the thoughts themselves are disturbing — and quite frankly, Pat’s vision of the world scares the crap out of me.

Even more disturbing is that this lunatic is given legitimacy by the media. I would think that if he holds the view that whites are superior to other races (and he clearly does), that while he is on screen, his name should read “Pat Buchanan/White Supremacist”, as well as a disclaimer that his views do not reflect the views of the station or network. In other words, treat him exactly the same as if a news show was interviewing a member of the Aryan Brotherhood.

Like those tenured professors at Georgtown did to Pat? Imagine how much of a right-wing a$$hole he must have been before!

With the new voting system, a more reasoned, nuanced dialogue from the conservative side might be welcome.

I would hope so, but I suspect that most of us will vote down any comment we don’t agree with, rather than engaging those arguments and just voting down the trolls.

Good point. I hope we’ll do enough self- police-ing to stop that, otherwise we’ll just become a left-wing redstate. I’m not here to debate how many liberal angels can stand on the head of a pin with other liberals.

  83. joe cantwell says:

    . …. ..

    what’s that ya say doggie?

    :)

    :)

  84. RantingTommy says:

the best thing about the new voting system at TP is that the spam gets voted down quickly and therefore people like watchpuppy and jimmmcdosh and jeffboste can’t advertise their right wing sites here

  85. Luis Chapulin M says:

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL): “we’re going to reduce the burden of penalties in some of the crack cocaine cases and make them fair.”

They’re reducing the penalties in some crack cocaine cases, because they’re harsher than white-collar cocaine cases? I found this link, but I’d like it if anyone else can find something a little bit clearer. Thanks.

  86. Exit Stage Left says:

I wonder if Rachel is forced to have Pat Puke-cannon on her show or if she voluntarily has him on just to slap him down and show him for the ignorant, racist fool he really is.

  87. DallasNE says:

“A country built basically by white folks”.

Linger on that statement for awhile. I guess it depends on what you mean by “built”. If by that you mean the labor to build America much of that came from either slaves or immigrants. The westward expansion of the Railroads was done by Chinese indentured servants. Mexican laborors do much of the “dirty” work today. Yes, at times the immigrants were white, such as the Irish, but more often they were non-white. Granted, the master for these non-white slaves and immigrants were basically white. So Buchanan showed not only a mean racist streak, he also show a basic ignorance of history. An ignorance formed by his racism.

Don’t forget, at the time the Irish people were also the victims of discrimination, by the white people.

The ‘opposition’ has abandon all pretenses. They show themselves to be blatently racist, sexist bald faced liars.
Who in their right mind could support these people?

  90. cmac says:

“This has been a country built basically by white folks.”

Well, except for the White House. There, only the overseers were white. The actual building was done by black folks.

I so hope this will spell the end of Buchanan’s noxious public career.

  91. Tawdry says:

This has been a country built basically by white folks.”

    ————————————————
That’s right, Pat. First taken away from the Native Americans by “white folk” and then built on the backs of kidnapped and enslaved Africans. Then came the poor Mexicans who worked for slave wages. I am a “white folk” who is not so proud of us. Thankfully the majority of Americans would not agree with Uncle Pat.

  92. ralph the wonder locust says:

Hmm… watchpup spews an awful lot of statistics but neglects to include any links to verify them…

Like the claim that “46% of our population is already covered by government sponsored plains”.

Since approximately 15% of the population has no health insurance at all, watchpup would like us to believe that only 39% of the population is covered by private health insurance.

Where do those guys get the $1.4 million a day that they’re using to bribe — er… lobby Congress on this issue?

  93. The Moderate Squad says:

nellre says: Who in their right mind could support these people?

The answer lies within the question – there are a lot of people in this country who are not in their right minds…

  94. The Moderate Squad says:

    Ralph, you slay me…

  95. flavorino says:

“This has been a country built basically by white folks”

Yeah Pat, I guess all those black slaves were just sitting around enjoying a free lunch.
I believe slaves had a part in the construction of the White House and other buildings in D.C (Where I believe Pat grew up and went to college), but Pat only knows the outdated racist white man version of US history.

Pat’s too out of it to be a tv pundit. He should not be pontificating his ridiculous off the wall views on tv…..
in his own home, the front porch of the retirement home, his local barbershop…fine, but there’s no way this out of date relic from the horse and buggy era should be spouting nonsense on a national level. He’s a waste of time in 2009.

  96. ralph the wonder locust says:

Does watchpup even read the stuff he links to? The first link returns a 404 error, but the second shows the percentage of total population enrolled in Medicare at 20%.

    Once again, watchpup pwns self.

Who in their right mind could support these people?

Not EVERYONE is in their right mind.
They play to the loonies, the delusional, the disturbed, the ignorant, the racists and the angry….that probably adds up to about 20% of the national electorate.

  98. Linus says:

    RantingTommy asks (at #4):

Why is Pat the racist still on TV?

To remind the rest of us (i.e., the rational world) what we never want to become.

  99. Tawdry says:

Why in the world do you live in a place that is built on such atrocities? If I were you I would find a place that has a perfect past says Watchdog.
    ———————————
#98 Watchdog – you must be one of those Con Repubs who thinks America can do no wrong? I have news for you, there is no perfect place, but we can work to make it better. It’s clear that for you and Pat Buchanen a perfect place would be 100% “white folks.”

  100. Justice58 says:

How dare this racist bigot claim America was built by white men when slaves had their backs beaten daily with spilled blood, fingers worked to the bone from sunrise to sunset!!!

MSNBC wants Pat Buchanan on the show because those dirty dogs like what he says. Pat knows they’re pleased…that’s why he doesn’t give a damn.

MSNBC need to be boycotted until Pat Buchanan is gone. They understand money.

  101. maxamillion says:

Just when you thought Pat and Bay Buchanan couldn’t get any worst………they prove you wrong.

Obviously, there’s no such thing. But putting people who commit genocide up on a pedestal is bad. Blaming the victims of genocide is bad. That’s what Buchanan was doing, and that’s what you’re defending. Therefore, you are bad. You are a bad person.

  104. MapleStreet says:

    Let’s run with Buchanan’s argument.

The signers of the Declaration of Independence and the Constutition were white, English-derived. Therefore, we must do away with the other europeans also.

  105. joe cantwell says:

    .. … …

    doggie…?

  106. pags2 says:

Some people have already pointed out that Buchanan is wrong from a historical standpoint. I would certainly hope the this falsehood is corrected on MSNBC. But I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for Buchanan to retract.

  107. ralph the wonder locust says:

joe cantwell, one of the minor trade-offs of this new system is that it provides a disincentive for the trolls to stick around and babble.

While in most ways this is a good thing, it does tend to cut down on the chances that a troll will pwn itself, as watchpuppy did above.

  108. joe cantwell says:

    ralph,

    i think doggie likes it

like long walks, trips in the car

    and pinching a loaf.

    ***

yes, this is good for doggie

    and good for us.

    congrats, tp.
