Rep. Todd Tiahrt suggests Obama’s mother wanted to abort him.

Speaking on the House floor yesterday, Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-KS) argued that low-income mothers of African-Americans — like President Barack Obama and Justice Clarence Thomas — would have aborted their children, if only the government had agreed to pay for it. To audible boos from his House colleagues, Tiahrt stated:

If you think of it in human terms, there is a financial incentive that would be put in place, paid for by tax dollars, that would encourage…single parents, living below the poverty level, to have the opportunity for a free abortion. If you take that scenario and apply it to many of the great minds we have today, who would we have been deprived of? Our President grew up in those similar circumstances. If that financial incentive was in place, is it possible that his mother might have taken advantage of it? Clarence Thomas, Supreme Court Justice, if those circumstances were in place, is it possible that we’d have been denied his great mind?

Watch it:

Setting aside Tiahrt’s questionable decision to list only African-Americans as candidates for retroactive abortion, Tiahrt also makes the misleading claim that “70% of Americans oppose using public funds for abortions.” In reality, current law allows Americans to pay for abortion through their health plans, and a recent poll shows that 71% of the country supports maintaining the status quo by permitting a public plan to cover reproductive services. Nevertheless, many Republicans are pushing a poison pill amendment that would forbid any plan offered within a national health insurance exchange from providing coverage for abortion services.

Apparently, Tiahrt is not familiar with “the clothes-hanger method”. It never ceases to amaze me that morons like this guy think that abortion was invented by Roe v. Wade and was never performed nor heard of until physicians started providing it as a safe procedure.

  10. Lora says:

Aside from the fact that Rep. Torn-heart only mentions prominent African-Americans who might have been aborted, he apparently does not know that Obama’s mother was married at the time of his birth.

You’re trying to have it both ways…justify limiting personal rights while lying through your teeth with made up scenarios. NO MOTHER wants to abort a child, dipshit.

If Clarence Thomas is one of our Nation’s great minds, it means the USA is mentally retarded. Thomas can’t BUY an opinion, let alone write one.

You’re not in Kansas anymore, Tiahrt, so STFU.

“If you think of it in human terms, there is a financial incentive that would be put in place, paid for by tax dollars, that would encourage…single parents, living below the poverty level, to have the opportunity for a free abortion.”

So the problem, according to Tiahrt, is “free” abortion, rather than “single parents, living below the poverty level.” Let me guess, Tiahrt is a loudly self-proclaimed Christian…

I wonder if the good Congressman would extend the same courtesy to the majority of Americans who consistently favor keeping abortion legal?

After all, no matter where you’re at on the issue, those Americans deserve the opportunity to have their voices heard on the floor of the House, right Rep. Tiahrt?

I never thought about it like that. For those of us from larger-population states (at least, more than Kansas), aren’t we technically paying for the salaries of members of the senate (a little OT from the idiot headlining this article) who DON’T represent us? A whole lot of red states’ senators are benefitting from the taxes given by blue states (and Texas, I guess).

Factor in unemployment trends and annual household income numbers and I suppose you could apply that imbalance to members of the House as well. Point of the matter is, if a single tax-dollar of mine goes to pay these morons’ salaries, I should have the right to vote against them in their district. National voting for a regional candidate free-for-all!

Therefore they have a constitutional duty to listen to EACH and EVERY one of us.

To the people who have stated “Clarence Thomas and great mind” don’t go together — one of the first thoughts that crossed my mind too.

These idiots don’t want to pay for abortions and they don’t want to pay for birth control which would prevent most abortions. So, pray tell, what are women supposed to do? Just lay down, spread their legs and enjoy it? I don’t THINK so.

Each day I am more and more amazed by just how stupid the Republicons and the Republicrats truly are. It is beyond belief that so many of them are actually considered “highly educated” and have degrees and are considered leaders in our political system. No wonder we’ve gone to hell in a hand basket so quickly.

I have a friend who went into the “rural nurses” program along the W. Virginia and Ohio boarders and she tells me that the abortion rate and domestic violence and drug use is higher than some urban areas. She attributed that to the lack of education and funding in rural areas. She also told me that a women had 3 abortions when she already had 5 kids and her husband had threaten to kill her if she had another one. The women ended up getting her tubes tied and her husband beat her to almost a pulp for having this procedure done. She’s in protective custody now with all 5 of her kids.

But Tiahart won’t mention that nor will the GOP.

This is a topic most would rather not discuss as the results will make Rep. Tiahrt’s comment embarrassing for many Americans who aren’t minorities. God wants you to have children and take care of them and take them to church.
God says you’re responsible for yourself and your family.
bit thinks this is a plan, no “perhaps” about it. All this is required is belief – faith.

You think “perhaps” is vague yet claim to know what God wants?

That’s quite an ego you got there.

Whatever seems being done now doesn’t seem to be working, does it?

Let me set you clear. The ‘old fashioned way’ of waiting until marriage and not teaching anything but abstinence is what is what has been done the last eight years and it precisely what is not working.

Perhaps if we stopped viewing children and the responsibility for them as a punishment for ‘irresponsible sexual behavior’ and instead viewed them as our shared responsibility as a community and a blessing no matter when they are born fewer would turn out as hateful and selfish as Republicans.
One can do this even if the children live with their mother and father.

Precisely. And one can do this even if the children live with their grandparents, or their uncle or aunt, or their mother and mother, or their father and father, or only their mother, or their older brother… etc. etc. etc.

There’s a lot of ways we can support children and their families, I’m glad you recognize that at least.

  123. ElBruce says:

How do you make money off of an abortion if the government pays for it? Wouldn’t they have to pay more than the cost of the abortion in order for a profit margin to exist? There’s no profit margin in something that costs a net $0. And it’s still an inconvenient, messy, often painful, and psychologically troubling procedure to have to undergo. It’s not like having an abortion is fun.

I’d agree with Tiahrt’s general principle that paying women to have abortions is ethically dangerous, particularly since it could amount to a eugenics program preying on the poor, and would likely skew against minorities in short order. So his inability to think of any white people who might have been aborted is OK in that respect. However, no such thing has happened, nor is it under consideration, nor is it a potential consequence of the bill underconsideration. He might as well be complaining about orbital mind control lasers.

  124. LibertyLover says:

I know that most people won’t agree with me on this, but I’m going to say it anyway. I find the comments on this blog that have said that this Congressman should have been aborted by his mother to be just as offensive as what this man said.

And it gives the false impression to the people on the right that liberals love aborting fetuses. And it gives them ammunition that propels their cause.

I know that you are trying to be snarky, and I know you are trying to be funny.

The people that I know want women to have choice over their lives by being able to have access to fact-based sexual information, unfettered access to birth control, and the right of self-determination for their lives and those of their families. The most civilized societies empower the women in their societies they don’t repress the choices of the women.

Reducing unwanted pregnancies should be the goal of us all. The way that liberals want to achieve that is by access to birth control and fact-based education, not by telling women lies such as abortion will lead to breast cancer and other such nonsense.

As vile as the comments of this Congressman are, when liberals make similar comments, I think that it is counterproductive.

    dixie blood says:

Manners and political correctness are the hanging nooses around the necks of progressives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, you go ahead and fight that fire with fire and all you will end up with is scorched earth.

This has nothing to do with political correctness. My only point was that this is such a hot button issue that being so flippant about such an important women’s health right (that is eroded at every turn) actually diminishes that right. If you truly support a woman’s right to choose, then you must realize that it is a decision that women take seriously and do not enter into without thought.

I live for the day that abortions are safe, legal and rare because women are given the real tools to prevent unwanted pregnancies. I have lived in a time before Roe v. Wade existed and do not want anyone to return to those back alley days.

I like a good snarky comment the same as anyone. If you were not offended by the comments that appear to take lightly a women’s right to choose, fine. I have no quarrel with that and you are free to continue to make thoe comments. I was offended. And it was only my opinion that I was expressing.

Will discussing the right to choose issue with people like bitbit or Tiahrt ever convince them? Not likely. Their fundamentalism is entrenched and predictable and unwavering. But there are reasonable people whose minds might be changed by a civil discussion of the issue. But they will never listen to you if you are shouting at them or being offensive.

Now, I’d like to show you that that you have just proved proved my previous point. I am a reasonable person. I like to think I can be persuaded to change my point of view because I have a fairly open mind if you can convince me of your position.

In your last comment you have called me an apologist (please show me where I apologized for anything that this particular congressman has done or said?), have inferred that I am a “sh*thead,” and invoked Godwin’s Law.

Do you think that you have convinced me of anything? Do you think that I am interested in anything more that you have to say on this subject? Or do you think that I will be more inclined to just put you on a personal “ignore” list because of these invectives? Hmmm. I wonder which one I will choose. Pity. Because from time to time, I’ve thought that you have made some interesting points.

I wholeheartedly agree. We do not have to stoop to the gauche, shrill or name calling to have an intelligent discourse. Repeated posts with name calling serve no purpose and merely reflect the lack of forethought for the post. There are the usual people who post the same sort of comments without any discussion. When I see their posts I just skip right through them. An intelligent comment or a clever witticism gets my attention.

This conclusion: many black preachers fear the total destruction of the black family did not originate with bit, but since bit can’t remember where he read it, let’s assume this concluding remark is bit’s opinion. Bit leaves it to TP readers to decide whether or not black Christian preachers fear the total destruction of the black family because of detrimental sexual behavior.

abortion rate is high in rural America.

What do you have to substantiate this claim?

bit did note while finding this information

Table 9 The percent of abortions performed on black preborn is 35.1% or all abortions.

that about 50% of the abortions in Alabama are to black women.

Do you think that stat contributes to your assertion that
