In a story that has become so common that it is almost passé, yet another conservative official has been busted sending racist e-mails. This time, the culprit is Atwater, CA Councilman Gary Frago, who sent at least half-a-dozen racist, anti-Obama e-mails to Atwater staff and community members:
Some compared Obama to O.J. Simpson while others suggested that “n[*****] rigs” should now be called “presidential solutions.”
Perhaps the most overboard e-mail was sent on Jan. 15. It read: “Breaking News Playboy just offered Sarah Palin $1 million to pose nude in the January issue. Michelle Obama got the same offer from National Geographic.”
Frago admitted sending the e-mails, but showed no regret. “If they’re from me, then I sent them,” he said. “I have no disrespect for the president or anybody, they weren’t meant in any bad way or harm.”
When given an opportunity to explain himself, Frago somehow managed to dig himself a deeper hole by saying: “I don’t see where there’s a story, I’m not the only one that does it. … I didn’t originate them, they came to me and I just passed them on.”
he said. “I have no disrespect for the president or anybody, they weren’t meant in any bad way or harm.”
Uh, yeah….riiiiggghhhttt, you betcha, by golly….we all believe that….

July 17th, 2009 at 6:32 pmI have no disrespect for Atwater, CA Councilman Gary Frago or anything, but he’s a complete dipshit.
July 17th, 2009 at 6:33 pmOh,
July 17th, 2009 at 6:34 pmI almost O.T. this on the last thread.

… And I especially like how his one defense is, “Other people do it, too.”
Dear Gary Frago,
Other people jump off bridges, too.
Care to try?

July 17th, 2009 at 6:37 pmSounds like yet another wingnut needing to resign for immoral behavior. Damn fascist theocrats.
July 17th, 2009 at 6:37 pmMy father was a life-long Republican. He would be sick at heart at what has happened to his party.
Funny thing, though. He once told me that sometime before I die I will vote Republican. He voted for Bill Clinton a year before he died. It’s highly unlikely that I will ever vote for a Republican, especially after seeing how pitiful they have become.
July 17th, 2009 at 6:38 pm*Sigh*
July 17th, 2009 at 6:38 pmI’ve said it before, and I’ve said it again: The opposition from the conservative camp to the Obama administration is partly rooted in racism.
People like Frago do not have any respect for African-Americans, regardless of their level of education, income, personal accomplishments, etc.
I encourage conservatives to keep talking and remove all doubt as to why they dislike Pres Obama and his family so much.
July 17th, 2009 at 6:38 pm.
Let me guess…
… Gary Frago is a “Christian”.
What will he say when he looks into the eyes of his Black Jesus?

That’s pretty much the mantra of the Republics. Remember how many times they said “Clinton did it too” over the last 8 years.
The remind me of four years olds.
July 17th, 2009 at 6:39 pmFRAGO: “I have no disrespect for the president or anybody, they weren’t meant in any bad way or harm.”
Is that right?
Well, no disrespect intended, but Piss Drinkers magazine just called. They want to do a spread featuring your wife.
July 17th, 2009 at 6:41 pmGregor,
July 17th, 2009 at 6:41 pm… partly rooted?
I’d say well rooted.
Jesus Christ on a cheese biscuit! This caveman thinks he’s clever.
July 17th, 2009 at 6:47 pmFrago, no disrespect intended but you’re an ignorant moron who is on the government payroll and needs to be terminated. No disrespect.
July 17th, 2009 at 6:47 pmThis guy obviously thinks Palin is a comic book superhero and Obama’s head is meant for the pike at the end of a sexy fight.
But in a tasteful, respectful way…of course.
July 17th, 2009 at 6:48 pmHey Councilman Frago – I don’t mean you any harm or anything, but I hope you, your wife, and all your children become afflicted with the most gut-wrenchingly painful forms of cancer and that you all die slowly – unloved and alone.
No disrespect, of course.
July 17th, 2009 at 6:50 pmThis time, the culprit is Atwater, CA Councilman Gary Frago

It’s hard to understand why African Americans, like Michael Steele, Condoleeza Rice, and Colin Powell, belong to a political party that hates African Americans. These comments are directed at Rice, Powell, and Steele as well as President Obama.
July 17th, 2009 at 7:09 pm.
I find telling/passing on RACIST jokes and jargon to be quite telling of a person’s character. For when they are in possession OF the language designed for hate, HOW they use it and pass it on is up to them.
NO ONE made Frago pass this sh!t on.

July 17th, 2009 at 7:19 pmMax Anax junius -1,
Yes, I guess that was an understatement, wasn’t it?
Atwater is a small community along H99 in the Central Valley here is California (a “podunk town” as my wife would put it).
I know that California has this image in the rest of the US as a liberal and progressive state -well, that is just not true. There are many small towns in the Central Valley that are full of bigots like Frago.
They tolerate Mexicans and other Hispanics because they are needed as day laborers, but that’s about it. Frago’s “joke” and explanation are not all that surprising, as bigoted as they are.
July 17th, 2009 at 7:21 pmWhen Letterman made that joke, HE apoligized. Not like this SOB. Just like a Repug, “It ain’t my fault!” Is their battle cry.
July 17th, 2009 at 7:22 pmI thought I would share an email I just sent to Mr. Frago.
July 17th, 2009 at 7:24 pm
What’s sad is that Frago doesn’t see how wrong his actions are. He just doesn’t care. Rascism is rooted so deep in this fool that no amount of rebukes or harsh criticism will touch him.
The only comfort I can take away is that these rascist behaviors are being exposed. I have hope that one day public officials of all ranks will be forced out of office for any rascist remarks or actions.
July 17th, 2009 at 7:27 pmDear Mr. Fargo,
July 17th, 2009 at 7:31 pmThanks for showing everyone how seriously affirmative action is still needed in this country.
There is no comparison between what Letterman did and Frago. Letterman made a joke about the daughter of a V.P. candidate that was used as a prop by said candidate – and Frago’s “jokes” are just plain racist and offensive.
Besides, Letterman shouldn’t have apologized. I still don’t know why he did.

Dear Bob
it is called irony. Although now in Wheaton born and raised southside democrat. I hope to see you at the Milton Township Democratic meeting so you can say that stuff to my face.
By the way did you notice the quotation marks.
Technically, that’s snark. Irony would be sarah letting her daughter get knocked up when she’s pretending to be a “family values” candidate.
You ask for grief when you play with “irony” on the web.
PS, the Whitesox suck…

Most workplaces consider sending racist jokes to coworker’s computers a violation of the harassment policy. In 99.99% of cases, the offender is terminated on the spot. Sometimes it takes a day or two.
July 17th, 2009 at 7:53 pmJust when you feel like our country took a big step towards breaking down the racial divide in the country (electing Obama)it seems like more and more wingnut racists are showing their faces. Repugs, wingnuts, and extreme wingnuts are a fcking disease. They do so much damage to our country and our image abroad. They dont give a flying fck about America and what its supposed to stand for. Theres a black man in the whitehouse, and democrats have tha majority in both houses. Repugs and wingnuts are furious about that. They are also too damn stupid to realize that their racism, hypocrisy, lying, and only caring about the wealthy is what put them in the minority. Frago should consider himself lucky that he doesnt live in a country where you get hung for making racial comments. That and the fact that there isnt enough rope to wrap around his fat neck. Seriously look at his picture, have you ever seen such a large neck

July 17th, 2009 at 8:52 pmOne of the most shocking aspects of many of these recent revelations is how unabashedly unapologetic these people are over their blatantly racist comments or activities.
“Lots of people do it”? That’s his explanation? It seems as though the far right fringe of the GOP have been showing their true colors lately, and Pat Buchanan seems eager to be their mouthpiece.
July 17th, 2009 at 8:52 pmhbc, that’s the sign of the true, dyed-in-the-wool racist. Even sadder is that any grief he gets from this won’t make him reexamine his motives or attitudes, it will only give him (and every other neoCon in the country) another chance to claim they are being victimized by the dirty ‘ol librul media, as though the NYTimes sent a goon to his office nad made him send racist e-mails.
July 17th, 2009 at 8:55 pmAnd his “support” of Bible Spice Palin is very telling, but I suspect most of her supporters would find these e-mails hi-larious. You know, the same people who thought “Deliverance” was a comedy…

July 17th, 2009 at 11:25 pmI am not amazed by this type of behavior b/c I’ve been a target all of my life. Frago just doesn’t realize how many opportunities he’s missing to meet great people when he can’t see past their skin. I always figured the racists would react like this to Obama. Nothing he’ll ever do will satisfy them, but Obama has adopted the age-old posture of those whom society looks down upon: keep working and prove them wrong; be successful in spite of their hatred.
July 17th, 2009 at 11:39 pmThe racists never stop to think of the impact of their words. Just this week we’ve had conservatives on the Judiciary Cmte, Pat & Bay Buchanan, Tiehart, and now Frago spout this racist BS, and this doesn’t include the talk radio racists and Fuchs Noose.

July 18th, 2009 at 12:33 amYou’re welcome Zooey. I think I’ve grown to the point where Patsy is more amusing than outrageous. He’s like a televangelist. I don’t like the fact that they can get rich spreading such filth but, as long as they don’t actually have a vote in Congress, I can usually laugh it off. It helps that there are people like Cenk who can express the anger so much more eloquently than I.
That way I can save my vitriol for trolls and creationists. Plus I know it doesn’t bother Patsy in the least. Even if the public managed to get him fired he would just pop up somewhere else screeching in triumph because he’s finally the victim he’s always imagined himself to be. Lord knows it will never be apparent to him that he’s a third stringer looking in from the outside because of his own, glaring, shortcomings.
Typical Reichwhiner.
July 18th, 2009 at 12:41 ampete, I used to think Pat WAS a televangelist. :D

July 18th, 2009 at 12:50 amFor a political party trying to make a comeback, the GOP is going down in flames faster as a roll of toilet paper. Here we go again. If those emails were sent from the office computer [which I assume they were], this nimrod councilman and others who passed along the racist emails are toasted. July 18th, 2009 at 1:31 amRacism has always been the problem since Obama was elected. He is the total opposite of what Republicans think a president should be. Obama is black, from a large urban city and intelligent who does not have to resort to waving the flag and thumping Bibles to get his message across. History is written in broad strokes. I can assure everyone that 50 years from now, people will read about Obama and all the racism that surrounds his campaign and presidency because the bad will outshine the good. People will look at this official as well as many others with disdain, shame and embarrassment when these racist things are written as history.
July 18th, 2009 at 1:37 amWhy, Mr. Frago looks like a fat, greasy small-time Mafia goon.
Uh, no disrespect, of course!
July 18th, 2009 at 2:09 amLet me concern troll for a moment.
There is a problem with racism in America. The emails that Frago passed are racist. He should have to answer for them.
Separately, Obama is the President and some people oppose him because of his race. But, just like every other president we have had, many people oppose him because they disagree with his ideas.
The concern is the conflation of the two ideas. A possible political tactic to broadly generalize all of the President’s opposition with the racist views of a subset, in order to discount, not just those with racist views, but anyone with objections at all.
It happens:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IeRxVMpyDg
We should oppose racism. We should also not let the issue be usurped for political gain.
July 18th, 2009 at 2:16 amNever fear. It may appear that there are more and more racists in America now that Obama is President. However, I believe it only seems that way and that this type of sicko racist is actually a dying breed. As America grows more and more liberal (as it is and inevitably will continue doing), scum racists like Frago stand out from the crowd more and more. If racist behavior like Frago’s was so common that it didn’t receive this type of attention, THEN we would have reason to be concerned.

July 18th, 2009 at 9:15 am
Frago has received an offer to pose on all fours for Hog Farmer Heaven.
July 18th, 2009 at 9:33 am“When given an opportunity to explain himself, Frago somehow managed to dig himself a deeper hole by saying: “I don’t see where there’s a story, I’m not the only one that does it. … I didn’t originate them, they came to me and I just passed them on.””
Garbage in, garbage out
July 18th, 2009 at 9:51 amFrago would have made a great Nazi. “I didn’t do anything wrong, everyone else does it, too. I was just passing along the hate, I didn’t start it.”
Now we only have to wait for the inevitable “I apologize if anyone was offended” non-apology apology. See, it’s not what he sent, it was how the reader perceived it.
Now we’ll see if Atwater acts to remove it’s councilman.

It’s a shame, really, because, while I didn’t always agree with what they had to say or the occasional insistence on taking threads off-topic, I did respect their input.

July 18th, 2009 at 11:30 amFrago’s email: gfrago@atwater.org
Atwater Mayor’s email: mayor@atwater.org
July 18th, 2009 at 11:37 amspencers mom didn’t say that. She noted the coincidental timing of their disappearance.
And exactly how do you know why they wouldn’t have left?
July 18th, 2009 at 11:39 amjoe cantwell, I gave b-cup a “Vote UP!” for displaying a modest level of self-awareness.
I think that should be encouraged.
July 18th, 2009 at 11:40 amI don’t think that this should surprise anyone. When guys like this constantly hear, read and see racist rants all over the place. On line it’s everywhere, on radio, the racist wing nuts are in control. On TV everyone immediately thinks Faux News but to me the ‘ultra liberal’ MSNBC is much more at fault for constatly airing dirt bag and absolute racist Pat Buchanan, in addition to Ed Schultz and Chris Matthews giving forums to Tom Tancrado and other overt racists. Until the media stops giving these racists the attention they crave we’ll never ever have the slightest chance to control it. And even then its so deeply imbeded in the bowels of this country it’s likely a lost cause.

I know that they really cared about it and Another Joe is much too talky to just leave like that. Even before the up/down thing or even one comment from him.
You criticize Obama’s policies here and you’re what happens.
July 18th, 2009 at 11:47 amdbadass, do you suppose this particular booger inspector has chosen a screen name that reflects the best rating he can expect, and even that, only on a nearly-exhausted discussion thread?

July 18th, 2009 at 12:07 pmMr. Cobb, you are here, but they (AJ/Hansh) have both disappeared. Their disappearance coincides precisely with the introduction of the vote up/down, but that may well be simply a coincidence.
But as Ralph asks, if you have no connection other than your gut reaction upon reading this blog, how do/would you know whether or not their decision not to post (miraculously simultaneous for two unconnected anonymous posters) was not related to community vote function?
Just asking…

July 18th, 2009 at 12:51 pmAfter 8 years of killing 4400 young men and women for oil, we have a President that is actually trying to clean up the mess bush left and conservatives have the audacity to ridicule him and his family. It speaks volumes about the character of anyone who is a republican.
July 18th, 2009 at 1:07 pmHere is the latest on Frago: He apologized for the racist emails. And some in his city is asking for his resignation:
Although city leaders say they don’t condone Frago’s behavior, at this point, they have no plans to punish him. Atwater resident Al Mayfield feels differently. “I’d like to see his resignation immediately.”
Mayfield said no apology will make up for the damage Frago has caused.”He hasn’t hurt just me. He’s hurt the future. Those kids that heard their dad yell out and read to the mom what he sent. That’s who he’s hurt. He can’t apologize to me, and be done.”
Mayfield plans to speak at the next Atwater city council meeting on July 27th. There, he’ll ask for Frago’s resignation.
Meanwhile, Frago said he has no plans to resign. Atwater officials are in the process of implementing an e-mail policy for city workers.
http://abclocal.go.com/kfsn/story?section=news/local&id=6921180
We shall see if there is enough outcry in Atwater to have this councilman removed. Of course, Frago said that he will not resign. Well, I remember TP posted an article about a mayor in a city in CA that send racist emails of the White House with watermelons which angered the city. And the people in the city wanted that mayor removed. The mayor said he wouldn’t quit. And what happened to him? He quit. There was too much of an outcry. But, in this case, it is up to the people in Atwater who will decide whether they want the coucilman to stay or quit. And there should have been an email policy for all city employees using the office computer in place from the get go.

July 18th, 2009 at 2:07 pmJust sent this to the fat bastard.
Dear Councilman Frago,
I have been following the flap over your forwarding of racist emails and have to say that I think you are being singled out for this activity. It’s really not your fault that you happened to be born in a world that supported racism and hatred towards others because of the color of their skin.
I have seen your pictures and I understand why you might feel an impotent rage towards President Obama, he is everything you aren’t. He is smart, articulate, in good shape, young and attractive. You however, are a fat, ugly, stupid and old redneck. I feel your pain.
There is a silver lining to this. You are old. You appear to be grossly out of shape, probably have clogged arteries, and won’t be around much longer to spread your hate. Feel free to step up and make that happen just as soon as possible, the world will be a tiny bit better without your racist ass around.
You obviously know how to forward emails, pass this along to the rest of your racist fck friends.
July 18th, 2009 at 2:11 pmWell ralph, Frago does seem like he finished at least the 10th grade by the time he was 24. DMW, not so much.

I just sent the following to the mayor’s office:
Madame Mayor:
I was absolutely HORRIFIED to read about the disgustingly racist emails about President Obama and our First Lady Michelle Obama that were unapologetically forwarded by Gary Frago. Worse still, Mr. Frago has professed himself not sorry he forwarded them, but only offered the exceedingly lame excuse that he wasn’t the one who wrote them, he only forwarded them.
Disgusting. Absolutely disgusting.
I have never seen so much ugly blatant racism in this country as I have seen since President Obama was elected in November. I’m sick of it, and I believe that racists like Mr. Frago should have NO PLACE in our government, as their comments prove that they cannot impartially act to benefit the American people – they act to benefit *white* people, and act to the detriment of every other American, thus proving themselves unfit to serve.
Mr. Frago should do the honorable thing and resign immediately. However, considering the vulgarity, ugliness and racism inherent in his actions, he undoubtedly does not possess the honorable character necessary for him to feel shame at his actions. Thus, I urge you to fire him immediately, and by doing so, issue a strong statement that such ugly racism will not be tolerated in our government.
I am urging my friends and collegues to contact you, Madame Mayor. We will not let this go.
I am an American, and I love my country. I hope you do too – please do the right thing and fire this racist immediately.
Please, everyone, hound this racist until he is either fired or resigns.

That’s California for you where repulsiveKKKans speak throuth their asses.
July 18th, 2009 at 7:23 pmAw, the damn right wing conservative is pisses off at Obama because his wife had sex with a black male and his daughter ran away with another one.
Or perhaps some black male didn’t accept his sexual urges.
The guy is sick and he is a councilman? That’s what wrong with California, too many inbred bible thumping flag waving hypocrite white males trying to communicate with the nation.
I guess is, nine chances of ten. he is homosexual in need of attention.
July 18th, 2009 at 7:33 pmI’m not surprised by this, I heard this before especially at my old job considering I was only one of two minorities at the job, people still have the same bigamous mindset. In fact last year before the election one guy (who I will not mention) at my work said if Obama was president he would be shot. I was shocked to hear that from a person but it just shows that they wouldn’t care just like the wack jobs that stormed in to a Jewish Museum and the neo nazi that shot a family plan doctor at a church. For Gary Frago who is a city councilman in CA just non nonchalantly admitted these emails just shows how encouraging it is for the neo-con psycho paths.
July 19th, 2009 at 8:37 amWhen it comes to race-based, violence-provoking hate mongering being perpetuated from various members of the GOP, the official response from the party leadership is typically one of the following:
July 19th, 2009 at 2:26 pm1) ignore it (easiest way to solve a problem is to pretend it doesn’t exist)
2) deny it (hear no evil, see no evil…)
3) embrace it (when it suits a particular political objective)

July 19th, 2009 at 11:25 pmThe Sacramento and San joaquin valley counties are about as red as any western red state. They are full of hispanic immigrants, migrant workers, and red necks.
It is my hope that after the Republican’s racist meltdown during the Sotomayor confirmation hearings the Hispanics will organize and get out the vote and try to remove scum like Frago from public office.
It is imperative that brown skin people in this country understand that in no way shape or form do the Republicans represent them or have their interests at heart.
