Zell Miller: Rahm should use ‘Gorilla Glue’ to keep Obama in his chair.

zellmillerwebIn 2004, then-Democratic Sen. Zell Miller (GA) threw his support behind President Bush with an angry speech attacking Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) at the Republican National Convention. Apparently, the passage of time hasn’t softened Miller’s anger. Yesterday, he continued his assault on the left while speaking to more than 1,000 mostly-Republican lawmakers from around the country. Miller punctuated his speech with a not-too-subtle racial barb at President Obama, saying he needs to stop meeting with foreign heads of state and that Rahm Emanuel ought to get some “Gorilla Glue” to keep Obama tied to his chair in the Oval Office:

He drew more applause from the mostly Republican legislators who packed a downtown Atlanta hotel ballroom when he said Obama needed to spend more time in Washington and less time traveling abroad.

“Our globe-trotting president needs to stop and take a break and quit gallivanting around,” Miller said, adding that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel needs to put “Gorilla Glue” on his chair to keep him in the Oval Office.

In his speech, Miller fed the predominantly conservative crowd more right-wing rhetoric, claiming the U.S. is “printing money like we are the Weimar Republic” and labeling Obama’s decision to close the Guantanamo Bay prison “nuts.”

  2. DRxJ says:

    “Gorilla” Glue?
    WTF is that?

And isn’t threatening the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA with harm, illegal and punishable?

  3. ralph the wonder locust says:

I thank God for the dynamic of wingnuts speaking to crowds of wingnuts. In that protected environment, they forget that others can record their words and play them back later, and they charge full steam ahead with the red meat rhetoric that’s gonna get them a standing “O” but will make most normal Americans shudder when they hear it.

  4. tom says:

I have a much better suggestion for the use of that “Gorilla Glue”. Apply it liberally to Miller’s lips and then hold his mouth closed for fifteen minutes. Problem solved!

  5. ljm says:

I didn’t know that Zellot was still around! Save some glue for his lips. The Right continues to dig deeper and deeper into the discard pile.

  6. Mike Hunt says:

Zell who?? And since 2004 when did his opinion on anything really matter?

  7. ralph the wonder locust says:

I think Zell Miller is a good example of the kind of “Dixiecrat” that the trolls always cite as evidence that it’s really Democrats, not Republicans who are racist.

Of course, they fail to realize (intentionally, no doubt) that “Democrats” like Zell Miller are no more liberal than Arlen Specter is conservative. Less, probably. “Democrats” like Zell Miller eventually find their way into their proper home — the Republican Party, where racists are a valued resource.

  8. ranus69 says:

Zell can go to hell he is so irrelevant these days. Again, another southern racist who cares.

  9. paleolib says:

My first reaction when I read this was “Zell Miller is still alive?” The 2004 Bush endorsement was notable only in that it exposed Zell as having ridden the racist short bus. The rest of his Dixiecrat buddies drifted over to the Republicans between the late ’60s and mid ’80s. Zell either didn’t get the memo or (more likely) couldn’t read it.

  10. evangenital says:

Zell Miller is another aging southern white guy with impotence issues.

The repiggies probably pay him to stay in the Democrat party, with the hope of making themselves look a little better.

  11. John_W says:

Well maybe if Obama was cutting brush on his ranch seven days a week then maybe Zell wouldn’t be so upset.

  12. stewarjt says:

    Zell Miller.

  13. mccatherine says:

I’d like to see a Zell Miller/Pat Buchanon death match.

  14. spencers mom says:

If President Obama were President Bush, he’d already be gone on that month-long faux cowboy trip to Crawford. You know, the one where he was deliverd the PDB entitled “al Qaeda, Determined to Stike in America” that he ignored.

Zell Miller needs to set up an all-aging white boy racist summer camp. Pat Buchanan can be his first camper.

    PEACE

  15. stateofthedivision says:

A deranged Zig-Zag Zell Miller and 1,000 Repugnican’ts talking about the Weimar Republic?

At what point did they don white sheets? As an aside, Ben Bernanke turned off the printing press months ago. At least get your facts right, Zell.

  16. ralph the wonder locust says:

    mccatherine says:
I’d like to see a Zell Miller/Pat Buchanon death match.

That could be quite entertaining, as long as the referee wasn’t of another race. In that case, they’d both turn on the ref early in the first round.

  17. krystalview says:

“….speaking to more than 1,000 mostly-Republican lawmakers from around the country.”

Here’s the really scary part of this story:

There are more than 1,000 republican lawmakers in this country.. Yikes!!!

  18. epm says:

While Miller is a repugnant, hate-spewing racist, Gorilla Glue is a popular brand of household glue, a la Super Glue. So he didn’t just make up the name to be racist.

In this one specific phrase, I’m only 60% convinced it was intended as a racial slur… Nah. He’s a pig. It was intended.

  19. LeslieBurton says:

As I’ve written on many occasions, the GOP and it’s ilk are imploding all around us. I just can’t imagine how they can expect to be relevant in future elections, etc.

  20. dasm says:

If Bush hadn’t destroyed goodwill towards the U.S. around the world, Obama wouldn’t need to travel so much. Repubs want to isolate the U.S. & attack the rest of the world, if not militarily, at least verbally. Obama, thank God, does not follow that path.

  21. Shayne says:

Interesting since his boy Bush was allowed to destroy the economy and ignore domestic issues because foreign policy was all that mattered after 9/11. These racists just hate seeing a black man use all perks that come with his job.

  23. Frugalchariot says:

Zell Miller — along with the overwhelmingly vast majority of his Republicant colleagues — needs gorilla glue on his lips. Speaking for myself, I have to say I am SICK AND TIRED of never-ending GOP (Greedy Old Philanderers) boisterous bigotry, also their eternal refusal to admit that it was THEM who destroyed the US (and global) economy with their Reaganista bullshit, brought to its logical peak in the eight years following their outright theft of the 2000 Presidential election.

Gorilla Glue is good stuff, btw. I’m thinking that if used as I’ve suggested, there would be peace in the valley for a good long time to come — no untoward racket! Be fun to test the theory on Limbaugh.

  24. The Moderate Squad says:

If Obama gets Gorilla Glue, then I want to use some White-Out on Miller…

  25. spencers mom says:

I can’t speak for all women, and I don’t speak for minorities, but on behalf of many of the women I know, I’d like to apologize to all you white men out there who may be feeling put upon by the likes of me and my gender.

I had no idea just how discriminated against you guys were! To think, when I arrived at the University of Pennsylvania in the late 70’s to discover that there were 2 women for every 5 men, I didn’t realize that was affirmative action at work.

When I was being paid about half what my white male counterpart was in the 1980’s, for doing the exact same job, only better, I was thinking that somehow I was being treated unfairly. I guess all along, it was that white male coworker who had to endure pay discrimination.

No wonder the Buchanans and Zells of the world are outraged. I simply had no idea how bad it was out there…

    PEACE

  26. fergus says:

Good ole boy, Zell Miller suggested that Rahm Emmanuel use Gorilla Glue to keep that black boy in his place. “That uppity n****r has got a lot of nerve acting like he’s President of the United States.”, Zell said. (my take on the speech)

  27. joeyramonesmom says:

Wow. In the Republican party, racism is as trendy as Crocs were a couple of years ago…and just as ugly. Just saying.

  28. Marie says:

When one is a Republican he already has one strike against him. When that Republican leaves his office (and supporting staff), he becomes increasingly incoherent — then he reaches the stage in life of Zell Miller — Republicans become raving, ranting, racist lunatics, unable to keep their true selves under cover.

  29. Briseadh na Faire says:

Maybe someone should use some “White Glue” to keep Zell’s mouth shut!

  30. spencers mom says:

I wonder if Zell uses shithead glue to keep that rug of his stuck on his noggin?

  31. misscoleopteramolly says:

Normally, I’d be willing to give Miller a pass on the “Gorilla Glue” reference, as that is a legitimate brand of glue, and he may not have intended it to be the slur it sounded like. But I have to wonder if he was trying to make a point by mentioning glue, why was it “Gorilla Glue” that was at the top of his mind instead of “Super Glue” — a much more widely used and familiar term? I find it hard to believe he just liked the sound of “Gorilla Glue” because it’s alliterative.

    i don’t usually find myself defending gop’ers

granted, i certainly think zell miller is a dick, i don’t think this statement was racist.

gorilla glue is diesel, its fantastic glue whether you’re repairing your shoe or your wood floor it does the job and does it well…

so much so that lots of people make this joke, i’ve made similar jokes regarding gorilla glue (never directed at someone who was black, but thats cuz i know it could be taken the wrong way and i don’t want to have to explain it)

anyways… dude obviously wasn’t thinking, but gorilla glue is real and its super sticky… when you try to get something to stick and you use gorilla glue, it sticks

    http://www.gorillaglue.com/

(i feel like gorilla glue should throw me a few bucks for this haha)

Zell Miller should definitely think more about the potential consequences of the words that come out of his mouth, but i don’t think he was intending this comment as racist.

  37. MCMetal says:

They need to place a muzzle on this moron’s mouth …………

  38. RantingTommy says:

Considering it is Zell Miller, even if all he said was “hello”, he probably meant it as a racist comment.

Zell is a racist to the bone. Even more than Pat Buchanan.

  39. Bobwurst says:

This is the same clown who helped george bush get elected by accusing john kerry of wanting to send “our boys” into combat with spitballs. So instead “our boys” got sent into combat with unarmed humvees. When this jerkwad dies I hope the path to hell is lined with the severed limbs of soldiers he helped mutilate.

  40. amish_edison says:

The GOP doesn’t do “subtle” racism. They don’t do “subtle” anything. They are intelligent enough to. They are too proud of the racism to attempt subtelty.

    For example, from Crooksandliars.com today:

Laura Ingraham actually outdoes The Savage Nation and says Obama wants Americans to die younger, but this line about Sotomayor is pretty awful too: “She’s got ovaries, and she’s Puerto? Rican.”

It was obvious that the GOP would not go gently into that good historical night, but the recent blatant racism just shows whats truly been at the core of their inhuman, and oh so very Christian nature all along.

  41. Zimzone says:

Actually, Zell uses ‘Elmer’s glue’, because it’s white.

  42. LibertyLover says:

Don’t you guys remember the time that Zell Miller openly criticized President Bush for spending 487 days at Camp David and 490 days at his “ranch” in Crawford or a whole 1/3rd of his Presidency?
    You don’t?
    Neither do I.

  43. spencers mom says:

    calavzma says:

granted, i certainly think zell miller is a dick, i don’t think this statement was racist.

He may have been entitled to the benefit of the doubt, his racist rants passed off as plain old ignorance and the inability to think before speaking, had he not later compared the Obama admin’s handling of the economy to Nazi Germany.

Too many code words in that speech to allow overt racism the excuse of “oops! my bad…”

  44. sscncturn64 says:

When miller used gorilla glue in his speach it was most likely intentional. Why not elmers or super glue. Im sure he thought about what he was going to say before he said. Anyone with any common sense at all could see the racial overtones in his comment. He knew it.

  45. fergus says:

Zell Miller should definitely think more about the potential consequences of the words that come out of his mouth, but i don’t think he was intending this comment as racist.

You could have ended this sentence after “more”.

  46. anterior says:

I know a number of people who naturally say ‘Gorilla Glue’ instead of ‘Super Glue’ and I doubt that any sort of racial motive was behind that.

Zell Miller is an idiot, that is self-evident. Correct me on this, but I don’t think he has a history of racial comments. So I think we can give him the benefit of the doubt on this and not make a big deal about it. There are plenty of substantive reasons to criticize Zell Miller, such as the point of this comment: that Obama is talking with too many of these foreign people. These policy differences can get lost in arguments about polyurethane vs. cyanoacrylate adhesives.

  47. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

    from wikipedia:

“Miller is currently teaching a leadership class at Young Harris College.”

Leadership? Now THAT’s some funny shite!

  48. LibertyLover says:

    spencers mom @25

Excellent snark. I had similar experiences only I lived in Texas…

In my first job out of college (in the early 80’s), I was hired at a salary that I could live with, it wasn’t great, but it was decent. When the next person they hired was male and I found out the salary that they were going to pay him— about 3K more than my starting salary, I questioned my bosses about it (both male). They actually told me that they paid him more because he would eventually have to support a family. (We were both single). It was a small office.

I asked them, so, if I go out and get myself pregnant, then you will pay me more, too? Since I would then be in the same category, of having to support a family. You should have seen the look on their faces. It was like it had never occurred to them what they were doing. I kept calling them on their sexism the whole time I worked for them. I like to think that I changed the way they thought about things, and by the time I left, I got the respect and the salary that I deserved.

his age. Watching these Republicans is like watching the
Chariot Race in Ben Hur. Crazy.

  51. misscoleopteramolly says:

DINO Zell Miller, like many Republicans, really doesn’t care if what he says is factually correct or not, because he knows his audience doesn’t care.

But the “printing money like the Wiemar Republic” is a new one. I wasn’t aware we were printing more money to pay for the stimulus package — I had assumed we were borrowing the money and going deeper into debt, as our country has been doing since Bush43 came to office (difference between Obama spending and Bush spending — we expect some ROI on the Obama expenditures, whereas the Bush expenditures went down a sh!thole).

Surely if our national mint was cranking out more money and creating hyperinflation, we’d be feeling the effects of that.

I won’t even get into his assessment of President Obama’s meeting with other heads of state (I may be thinking crazy here, but isn’t that part of his job?), when his own hero, Dubya, felt that bombing, threatening to bomb, or just ignoring other countries made for a much more effective foreign policy.

    spencers mom and liberty lover,
I too can report a similar employment issue in the early 1980’s. Men were paid more, given the opportunity for overtime, and were not subjected to demeaning sexual harrassment.
They hated affirmative action — as much as they hated having to employ OSHA regulations — the old boys’ network was everywhere – they liked the status quo and were really hard to change.

  55. katy says:

  56. Bobwurst says:

    captainstormfield says:
I do agree with one of the other posters however. Gorilla Glue would be a common term with someone his age.

I’m going to disagree here. Gorilla Glue is a relatively new product. It’s been around since the 80’s in the trades, but in general use, it’s recent. If Zell was using the glue of his childhood, he’d have used Elmers.

Also, I have a hard time believing that Zell repairs anything. He’s a wealthy man and has people, most likely brown-skinned people to do his manual labor.

  57. americanscream says:

“Think about it: Today the presumption of innocence for the average American traveler has been lost,” said Miller. “And yet while we lose more and more of our daily freedoms, the cause of our loss – the terrorists – gains new freedoms through President Obama’s dangerous sense of justice.”

    RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT. Moron.

It was President Obama who implemented warrantless wire taping ON USA CITIZENS, torture, secret prisons, no fly lists riddled with thousands of errors including BABIES, and the stupid kindergarten terror alert to be used for political purposes.

  65. kennethetucker says:

    Some wiki facts:

Zell Bryan Miller (born February 25, 1932) is an American politician from the U.S. state of Georgia. A Democrat, Miller served as Lieutenant Governor from 1975 to 1990, Governor of Georgia from 1991 to 1999, and as United States Senator from 2000 to 2005.

Miller, a Democrat, was Mayor of Young Harris from 1959 to 1960, and was elected to two terms as a Georgia state senator during the 1960s. In 1964 and 1966, he unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for a seat in the United States House of Representatives. He endorsed segregation in both races, a move he later publicly regretted. He later served in several positions in state government and in the Georgia Democratic Party.

I would suggest he, like McCain, both white, southern, children of the 30’s, STILL hasn’t let go of those deeply imprinted biases. We are ALL prejudiced, it’s just a matter of how we ‘work around’ those prejudices or, in Miller’s case, just let them control him.

How, sad it is for a Marine Korean Veteran and strong supporter of education in GA to be so obviously in need of RE-education. His world (white supremacy/privilege) is gone and it hurts, doesn’t ‘Zell’.

  70. bigtime patriot says:

“When miller used gorilla glue in his speach it was most likely intentional.”

This is the old question about George Bush, were his policies so bad because he was stupid or because he was evil?

I’m thinking that Miller is stupid because he believes in stupid conservative things like tax cuts will help the economy (which after 8 years of tax cuts anyone with open eyes can see that is false).

So thinking Miller is stupid, I can’t credit every statement out of his mouth as having been carefully crafted and thought out for maximum evilness. I think Gorilla Glue (they make good duct tape also) may in this case just be Gorilla Glue and not an evil racist saying (but I don’t know Mr.Miller so I could be wrong).

Also, in rural GA, the Democrats historically were the conservative folks and also the party that stood up to the carpet-baggers. Dem from GA can often be very narrow and bigoted.
