In 2004, then-Democratic Sen. Zell Miller (GA) threw his support behind President Bush with an angry speech attacking Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) at the Republican National Convention. Apparently, the passage of time hasn’t softened Miller’s anger. Yesterday, he continued his assault on the left while speaking to more than 1,000 mostly-Republican lawmakers from around the country. Miller punctuated his speech with a not-too-subtle racial barb at President Obama, saying he needs to stop meeting with foreign heads of state and that Rahm Emanuel ought to get some “Gorilla Glue” to keep Obama tied to his chair in the Oval Office:
He drew more applause from the mostly Republican legislators who packed a downtown Atlanta hotel ballroom when he said Obama needed to spend more time in Washington and less time traveling abroad.
“Our globe-trotting president needs to stop and take a break and quit gallivanting around,” Miller said, adding that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel needs to put “Gorilla Glue” on his chair to keep him in the Oval Office.
In his speech, Miller fed the predominantly conservative crowd more right-wing rhetoric, claiming the U.S. is “printing money like we are the Weimar Republic” and labeling Obama’s decision to close the Guantanamo Bay prison “nuts.”
Zell Miller: Rahm should use ‘Gorilla Glue’ to keep Obama in his chair.
– - Let’s ALL challenge this senile old fool to a duel.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:03 am“Gorilla” Glue?
WTF is that?
And isn’t threatening the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA with harm, illegal and punishable?
July 17th, 2009 at 10:05 amI thank God for the dynamic of wingnuts speaking to crowds of wingnuts. In that protected environment, they forget that others can record their words and play them back later, and they charge full steam ahead with the red meat rhetoric that’s gonna get them a standing “O” but will make most normal Americans shudder when they hear it.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:06 amI have a much better suggestion for the use of that “Gorilla Glue”. Apply it liberally to Miller’s lips and then hold his mouth closed for fifteen minutes. Problem solved!
July 17th, 2009 at 10:07 amI didn’t know that Zellot was still around! Save some glue for his lips. The Right continues to dig deeper and deeper into the discard pile.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:07 amZell who?? And since 2004 when did his opinion on anything really matter?
July 17th, 2009 at 10:09 amI think Zell Miller is a good example of the kind of “Dixiecrat” that the trolls always cite as evidence that it’s really Democrats, not Republicans who are racist.
Of course, they fail to realize (intentionally, no doubt) that “Democrats” like Zell Miller are no more liberal than Arlen Specter is conservative. Less, probably. “Democrats” like Zell Miller eventually find their way into their proper home — the Republican Party, where racists are a valued resource.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:10 amZell can go to hell he is so irrelevant these days. Again, another southern racist who cares.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:12 amMy first reaction when I read this was “Zell Miller is still alive?” The 2004 Bush endorsement was notable only in that it exposed Zell as having ridden the racist short bus. The rest of his Dixiecrat buddies drifted over to the Republicans between the late ’60s and mid ’80s. Zell either didn’t get the memo or (more likely) couldn’t read it.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:14 amZell Miller is another aging southern white guy with impotence issues.
The repiggies probably pay him to stay in the Democrat party, with the hope of making themselves look a little better.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:15 amWell maybe if Obama was cutting brush on his ranch seven days a week then maybe Zell wouldn’t be so upset.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:15 amZell Miller.
Rabid dog comes to mind.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:16 amI’d like to see a Zell Miller/Pat Buchanon death match.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:16 amIf President Obama were President Bush, he’d already be gone on that month-long faux cowboy trip to Crawford. You know, the one where he was deliverd the PDB entitled “al Qaeda, Determined to Stike in America” that he ignored.
Zell Miller needs to set up an all-aging white boy racist summer camp. Pat Buchanan can be his first camper.
PEACE
July 17th, 2009 at 10:18 amA deranged Zig-Zag Zell Miller and 1,000 Repugnican’ts talking about the Weimar Republic?
At what point did they don white sheets? As an aside, Ben Bernanke turned off the printing press months ago. At least get your facts right, Zell.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:19 amThat could be quite entertaining, as long as the referee wasn’t of another race. In that case, they’d both turn on the ref early in the first round.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:20 am“….speaking to more than 1,000 mostly-Republican lawmakers from around the country.”
Here’s the really scary part of this story:
There are more than 1,000 republican lawmakers in this country.. Yikes!!!
July 17th, 2009 at 10:24 amWhile Miller is a repugnant, hate-spewing racist, Gorilla Glue is a popular brand of household glue, a la Super Glue. So he didn’t just make up the name to be racist.
In this one specific phrase, I’m only 60% convinced it was intended as a racial slur… Nah. He’s a pig. It was intended.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:26 amAs I’ve written on many occasions, the GOP and it’s ilk are imploding all around us. I just can’t imagine how they can expect to be relevant in future elections, etc.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:27 amIf Bush hadn’t destroyed goodwill towards the U.S. around the world, Obama wouldn’t need to travel so much. Repubs want to isolate the U.S. & attack the rest of the world, if not militarily, at least verbally. Obama, thank God, does not follow that path.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:29 amInteresting since his boy Bush was allowed to destroy the economy and ignore domestic issues because foreign policy was all that mattered after 9/11. These racists just hate seeing a black man use all perks that come with his job.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:30 amToday’s TP Twofer: Racists Buchanan and Miller
July 17th, 2009 at 10:30 amZell Miller — along with the overwhelmingly vast majority of his Republicant colleagues — needs gorilla glue on his lips. Speaking for myself, I have to say I am SICK AND TIRED of never-ending GOP (Greedy Old Philanderers) boisterous bigotry, also their eternal refusal to admit that it was THEM who destroyed the US (and global) economy with their Reaganista bullshit, brought to its logical peak in the eight years following their outright theft of the 2000 Presidential election.
Gorilla Glue is good stuff, btw. I’m thinking that if used as I’ve suggested, there would be peace in the valley for a good long time to come — no untoward racket! Be fun to test the theory on Limbaugh.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:30 amIf Obama gets Gorilla Glue, then I want to use some White-Out on Miller…
July 17th, 2009 at 10:31 amI can’t speak for all women, and I don’t speak for minorities, but on behalf of many of the women I know, I’d like to apologize to all you white men out there who may be feeling put upon by the likes of me and my gender.
I had no idea just how discriminated against you guys were! To think, when I arrived at the University of Pennsylvania in the late 70’s to discover that there were 2 women for every 5 men, I didn’t realize that was affirmative action at work.
When I was being paid about half what my white male counterpart was in the 1980’s, for doing the exact same job, only better, I was thinking that somehow I was being treated unfairly. I guess all along, it was that white male coworker who had to endure pay discrimination.
No wonder the Buchanans and Zells of the world are outraged. I simply had no idea how bad it was out there…
PEACE
July 17th, 2009 at 10:31 amGood ole boy, Zell Miller suggested that Rahm Emmanuel use Gorilla Glue to keep that black boy in his place. “That uppity n****r has got a lot of nerve acting like he’s President of the United States.”, Zell said. (my take on the speech)
July 17th, 2009 at 10:31 amWow. In the Republican party, racism is as trendy as Crocs were a couple of years ago…and just as ugly. Just saying.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:32 amWhen one is a Republican he already has one strike against him. When that Republican leaves his office (and supporting staff), he becomes increasingly incoherent — then he reaches the stage in life of Zell Miller — Republicans become raving, ranting, racist lunatics, unable to keep their true selves under cover.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:32 amjoeyramonesmom, this ought to make you feel better…

Maybe someone should use some “White Glue” to keep Zell’s mouth shut!
July 17th, 2009 at 10:36 amI wonder if Zell uses shithead glue to keep that rug of his stuck on his noggin?
PEACE
July 17th, 2009 at 10:39 amNormally, I’d be willing to give Miller a pass on the “Gorilla Glue” reference, as that is a legitimate brand of glue, and he may not have intended it to be the slur it sounded like. But I have to wonder if he was trying to make a point by mentioning glue, why was it “Gorilla Glue” that was at the top of his mind instead of “Super Glue” — a much more widely used and familiar term? I find it hard to believe he just liked the sound of “Gorilla Glue” because it’s alliterative.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:39 amHow ’bout an intravenous Gorilla Glue drip for Mr. Miller until he’s stiff as a board and ready to be propped up in Madame Tussuad’s Wax Museum for all time?

July 17th, 2009 at 10:45 ami don’t usually find myself defending gop’ers
granted, i certainly think zell miller is a dick, i don’t think this statement was racist.
gorilla glue is diesel, its fantastic glue whether you’re repairing your shoe or your wood floor it does the job and does it well…
so much so that lots of people make this joke, i’ve made similar jokes regarding gorilla glue (never directed at someone who was black, but thats cuz i know it could be taken the wrong way and i don’t want to have to explain it)
anyways… dude obviously wasn’t thinking, but gorilla glue is real and its super sticky… when you try to get something to stick and you use gorilla glue, it sticks
http://www.gorillaglue.com/
(i feel like gorilla glue should throw me a few bucks for this haha)
Zell Miller should definitely think more about the potential consequences of the words that come out of his mouth, but i don’t think he was intending this comment as racist.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:46 amThey need to place a muzzle on this moron’s mouth …………
July 17th, 2009 at 10:48 am… …. ..
i think zell’s been

:|
July 17th, 2009 at 10:48 amConsidering it is Zell Miller, even if all he said was “hello”, he probably meant it as a racist comment.
Zell is a racist to the bone. Even more than Pat Buchanan.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:49 amThis is the same clown who helped george bush get elected by accusing john kerry of wanting to send “our boys” into combat with spitballs. So instead “our boys” got sent into combat with unarmed humvees. When this jerkwad dies I hope the path to hell is lined with the severed limbs of soldiers he helped mutilate.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:49 amThe GOP doesn’t do “subtle” racism. They don’t do “subtle” anything. They are intelligent enough to. They are too proud of the racism to attempt subtelty.
For example, from Crooksandliars.com today:
It was obvious that the GOP would not go gently into that good historical night, but the recent blatant racism just shows whats truly been at the core of their inhuman, and oh so very Christian nature all along.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:50 amActually, Zell uses ‘Elmer’s glue’, because it’s white.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:50 amDon’t you guys remember the time that Zell Miller openly criticized President Bush for spending 487 days at Camp David and 490 days at his “ranch” in Crawford or a whole 1/3rd of his Presidency?
July 17th, 2009 at 10:51 amYou don’t?
Neither do I.
calavzma says:
He may have been entitled to the benefit of the doubt, his racist rants passed off as plain old ignorance and the inability to think before speaking, had he not later compared the Obama admin’s handling of the economy to Nazi Germany.
Too many code words in that speech to allow overt racism the excuse of “oops! my bad…”
PEACE
July 17th, 2009 at 10:55 amWhen miller used gorilla glue in his speach it was most likely intentional. Why not elmers or super glue. Im sure he thought about what he was going to say before he said. Anyone with any common sense at all could see the racial overtones in his comment. He knew it.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:58 amZell Miller should definitely think more about the potential consequences of the words that come out of his mouth, but i don’t think he was intending this comment as racist.
You could have ended this sentence after “more”.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:59 amI know a number of people who naturally say ‘Gorilla Glue’ instead of ‘Super Glue’ and I doubt that any sort of racial motive was behind that.
Zell Miller is an idiot, that is self-evident. Correct me on this, but I don’t think he has a history of racial comments. So I think we can give him the benefit of the doubt on this and not make a big deal about it. There are plenty of substantive reasons to criticize Zell Miller, such as the point of this comment: that Obama is talking with too many of these foreign people. These policy differences can get lost in arguments about polyurethane vs. cyanoacrylate adhesives.
July 17th, 2009 at 11:02 amfrom wikipedia:
“Miller is currently teaching a leadership class at Young Harris College.”
Leadership? Now THAT’s some funny shite!
1,000 Regressive lawmakers in one room? I’d hate to be the men’s room cleaning crew after that neanderthal circle-jerk.
July 17th, 2009 at 11:03 amspencers mom @25
Excellent snark. I had similar experiences only I lived in Texas…
In my first job out of college (in the early 80’s), I was hired at a salary that I could live with, it wasn’t great, but it was decent. When the next person they hired was male and I found out the salary that they were going to pay him— about 3K more than my starting salary, I questioned my bosses about it (both male). They actually told me that they paid him more because he would eventually have to support a family. (We were both single). It was a small office.
I asked them, so, if I go out and get myself pregnant, then you will pay me more, too? Since I would then be in the same category, of having to support a family. You should have seen the look on their faces. It was like it had never occurred to them what they were doing. I kept calling them on their sexism the whole time I worked for them. I like to think that I changed the way they thought about things, and by the time I left, I got the respect and the salary that I deserved.
July 17th, 2009 at 11:06 amBush’s first trip abroad in his presidency was in June, 2001. His ratings fell.
July 17th, 2009 at 11:07 amZell sounds like a real Ulster Scot, in common parlance a “redneck”. He may also be suffering from Alzheimers, isnt
July 17th, 2009 at 11:09 amrage a symptom? I do agree with one of the other posters however. Gorilla Glue would be a common term with someone
his age. Watching these Republicans is like watching the
Chariot Race in Ben Hur. Crazy.
DINO Zell Miller, like many Republicans, really doesn’t care if what he says is factually correct or not, because he knows his audience doesn’t care.
But the “printing money like the Wiemar Republic” is a new one. I wasn’t aware we were printing more money to pay for the stimulus package — I had assumed we were borrowing the money and going deeper into debt, as our country has been doing since Bush43 came to office (difference between Obama spending and Bush spending — we expect some ROI on the Obama expenditures, whereas the Bush expenditures went down a sh!thole).
Surely if our national mint was cranking out more money and creating hyperinflation, we’d be feeling the effects of that.
I won’t even get into his assessment of President Obama’s meeting with other heads of state (I may be thinking crazy here, but isn’t that part of his job?), when his own hero, Dubya, felt that bombing, threatening to bomb, or just ignoring other countries made for a much more effective foreign policy.
July 17th, 2009 at 11:13 amWe need to put “Crazy Glue” on Zell Miller’s mouth to keep it shut.–pastcaring
July 17th, 2009 at 11:16 amI see others beat me to the same analogy…
July 17th, 2009 at 11:21 amspencers mom and liberty lover,
July 17th, 2009 at 11:23 amI too can report a similar employment issue in the early 1980’s. Men were paid more, given the opportunity for overtime, and were not subjected to demeaning sexual harrassment.
They hated affirmative action — as much as they hated having to employ OSHA regulations — the old boys’ network was everywhere – they liked the status quo and were really hard to change.
i guess he COULD have said “elmers”, but that gorilla glue is good stuff…
July 17th, 2009 at 11:23 amcaptainstormfield says:
I do agree with one of the other posters however. Gorilla Glue would be a common term with someone his age.
I’m going to disagree here. Gorilla Glue is a relatively new product. It’s been around since the 80’s in the trades, but in general use, it’s recent. If Zell was using the glue of his childhood, he’d have used Elmers.
Also, I have a hard time believing that Zell repairs anything. He’s a wealthy man and has people, most likely brown-skinned people to do his manual labor.
July 17th, 2009 at 11:25 amTo those who think no racism was intended by Miller’s “gorilla glue”, if you prefer “Gorilla Glue”, comment, just remember what Freud said:
“There are no accidents.”
July 17th, 2009 at 11:27 amJust another bigoted, racist moron scaring the sht out of the ignorant conservative base.
Another quote from his speech:

Just another right wing has-been politician. It seems like that’s all they have to represent their party these days. Why is that? Could it be because the Republics who are still in office need to keep their mouths shut if they want to keep their jobs?
July 17th, 2009 at 11:39 amralph @ #62: Great link, thanks…
July 17th, 2009 at 11:42 amanterior says:
I know a number of people who naturally say ‘Gorilla Glue’ instead of ‘Super Glue’ and I doubt that any sort of racial motive was behind that.
I think you are wrong about that. Super glue is a way more common identifier for glue than is Gorilla Glue. The only people I know who would even know what Gorilla Glue is are people in the trades and those addicted to the shopping network.
July 17th, 2009 at 11:43 amAnyone notice that the right wing is getting more bazaar then they use to be WHEN they were in power? Nice to see them as they really are instead of the way they pretend to be when they were in power.
July 17th, 2009 at 11:45 amLook out America, these guys want their power back.
Yeah, it worked so well when his boybush stayed in DC didn’t it.
July 17th, 2009 at 11:52 amSome wiki facts:
I would suggest he, like McCain, both white, southern, children of the 30’s, STILL hasn’t let go of those deeply imprinted biases. We are ALL prejudiced, it’s just a matter of how we ‘work around’ those prejudices or, in Miller’s case, just let them control him.
How, sad it is for a Marine Korean Veteran and strong supporter of education in GA to be so obviously in need of RE-education. His world (white supremacy/privilege) is gone and it hurts, doesn’t ‘Zell’.
July 17th, 2009 at 11:56 amYou hit the nail on the head with the word privilege. If these people weren’t privileged to begin with, would we have ever been beset with them?
July 17th, 2009 at 12:00 pmWhy hasn’t the democratic party given this nutsack traitor the boot yet? Am I missing something here?
July 17th, 2009 at 12:29 pmZell Miller??? I thought he was dead.
I can see he’s brain dead.
July 17th, 2009 at 12:31 pmOur globe-trotting president needs to stop and take a break and quit gallivanting around,
Hmmm, August is coming up, maybe this senile, dimwitted, antiquated racist Zell Miller would prefer that Obama takes a couple of weeks off to cut brush on a fake ranch.
July 17th, 2009 at 1:15 pm“When miller used gorilla glue in his speach it was most likely intentional.”
This is the old question about George Bush, were his policies so bad because he was stupid or because he was evil?
I’m thinking that Miller is stupid because he believes in stupid conservative things like tax cuts will help the economy (which after 8 years of tax cuts anyone with open eyes can see that is false).
So thinking Miller is stupid, I can’t credit every statement out of his mouth as having been carefully crafted and thought out for maximum evilness. I think Gorilla Glue (they make good duct tape also) may in this case just be Gorilla Glue and not an evil racist saying (but I don’t know Mr.Miller so I could be wrong).
July 17th, 2009 at 1:35 pmThis guy is just an angry old fart. Must have had an unhappy childhood or something.
July 17th, 2009 at 1:42 pmDoes anyone still has doubts opposition to Pres Obama from the conservative camp is partly driven by racism?
Anyone?
July 17th, 2009 at 1:59 pmZell Miller and Republicans in general should take this advice. Stop talking. It’s not helping your cause in the least.
July 17th, 2009 at 2:05 pmI think Zell Miller is mentally ill.
Sad.
July 17th, 2009 at 2:16 pmI bet President Obama and his staff get a chuckled from these clowns.
Another old southern white racist narrow minded teabaggin clone.
This is just what the US needs.
They think they are “chosen” for their elected position.
July 17th, 2009 at 2:29 pmThey have mistresses if they belong to c (c=cootie) house.
They lie at a drop of a hat. It’s raining hats.
There is so much dirt, destruction and death on these clowns they should STFU and fade away.
These guys know dick about economics. Far from Weimar style inflation, we appear to be in a deflationary cycle. I feel like a vulture scarfing up on sales to kick-start my business. I would rather see prices go up some to reflect full employment.
Tip big, tip often.
July 17th, 2009 at 2:39 pmThere’s two racial slurs here. There’s the obvious “gorilla glue” statement and there’s the “Globe-Trotting President” comment, an obvious reference to the Harlem Globe Trotters.
All President’s travel the world, so referring to him as a “Globe-trotting” President is just talking to his skin color.

July 17th, 2009 at 2:56 pmLet me give Miller some slack in that “Gorilla Glue” is an actual product name of a glue which does very well of gluing almost anything together.
However, let me also say that originally being from GA, I really detest Miller. He has got to be a total idiot not to recognize the racial tones in his statement. As even I don’t think he’s that stupid, I can only think that he did this deliberately.
Also, in rural GA, the Democrats historically were the conservative folks and also the party that stood up to the carpet-baggers. Dem from GA can often be very narrow and bigoted.
July 17th, 2009 at 3:02 pmOh geez………
Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water.
Trust me when I say that those of us who know or know of Zell Miller think he is a NUT !
He is an embarrassment to United States let alone Georgia, his family and distant cousins (he married one.)
July 17th, 2009 at 4:08 pmGorilla glue, give me a break. Were did freedom of speach go. Blacks make every comment to be racist. The latino comment that Sotomayer made is worst than the glue remark but gets swept under the rug as usual. The only racist in the country are blacks and latinos.
July 17th, 2009 at 4:10 pmIt seems that these older politicians think you can do work only if you are “in an office”. Someone should remind him that due to technological advances, work can be done anywhere and as President Obama has stated, he can even multi-task. Yeah we all know how scary that is.
Everytime I hear someone speak like that, it reminds me that term limits would be a good thing!
Hey Zell, even GWB could receive daily reports in TX…although there is no proof that he read them, in TX or in DC.
July 17th, 2009 at 4:14 pmThese Republicans are absolutely hilarious. This kind of humor is so appealing- should attract thinking people to the GOP like flies to honey. Or is “stink on shit” more appropriate for this ilk?
July 17th, 2009 at 4:29 pmI’m still waiting for the first utterance of “the N word”.
You know it’s gonna happen. And you know from which party.
The only question is who.

July 19th, 2009 at 2:58 pmWhether his comment was intended to be racist or not…who can say? But I have to agree with one part of this. Obama needs to keep his butt in the country for awhile. Everyone’s talking national defecit, but our good ol’ president is certainly not doing his part to help. He’s too busy flying to different countries and wining and dining his wife and kids all over the world. By the way…who pays the tab? Oh thats right! All of us little Americans!
