Joe Scarborough Calls For Dismissal Of New Young Republican Chairman Audra Shay

audrashay_01Earlier this week, 38-year old Tennessee resident Audra Shay won an election to take over the Young Republicans National Federation. Shay’s candidacy had been supported by Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA).

Shay won the post despite the fact that she had come under heavy criticism for approving of a racist comment made by a friend on Facebook. When her friend Eric commented, “obama bin lauden is the new terrorist….muslim is on there side …..need to take this country back from all these mad coons…….and illegals,” Shay responded: “You tell em Eric! lol [laughing out loud].”

When asked about the controversy by Bill Maher last night on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough said Shay needs to be “immediately” dismissed:

SCARBOROUGH: Yeah, LOL. I hope LOL stands for something other than what I’ve been taught that LOL stands for. I mean, that’s obviously something that the National Republican Party should step in on immediately and relieve her of her responsibilities. That’s inexcusable. [crowd applause] And that’s the sort of thing, if somebody writes it, she needs to be relieved at once.

The flap over the racist comments seemed to help Shay get elected. The Indianapolis Star reported that many young Republicans flocked to Shay’s side to defend her against what they viewed as “just political mudslinging.”

Shay offered this reasoning in her defense: “An individual posted two comments on my Facebook wall, the first comment arguing against big government, and the second filled with racially charged comments. … I responded supporting the individual’s first post. … I was not aware of the racial comments until sometime later, when a third individual brought it to my attention.”

    Man, that’s weak.

    That’s some seriously weak shit.

And besides… since when is 38 years old “young”?.

  2. ralph the wonder locust says:

    Shorter Audra:

“So what am I supposed to do? … read every word in a comment that I’m replying to? Get real.”

  3. P.D. says:

Oh please! Now Joe is condenming this? The only reason Joe is calling for her dissmissal is because of the publicity. Trust me, if this was keep under wraps, Joe would be praising her. Remember the ‘Mucaca’ moment. It took days for MSM to report on it after it was all over You-Tube. Thing about MSM and their Big Business buddies, is they will try to shield Repugs no matter what. Look at the ‘C Street’ Scandal. Only Rachel has brought it up in length. Nobody else will touch it.

  4. P.D. says:

ralph@1, To Repugs, anyone under fifty is young. Repugs consist of old, white bigots. This woman would have been a champion of the Republican cause, IF she didn’t get busted for this.

  5. Rich H says:

    P.D.

I’m with you. Joe was little or no redeeming qualities. Why don’t we ask the intern he was having an affair with? That’s right, we can’t – may she rest in peace.

How much air time did this story get?

  6. ralph the wonder locust says:

    P.D. says:

Oh, damn. Good point. I forgot who we’re talking about here. Thanks.

  10. Rich H says:

It’s pretty funny Jindal supported her candidacy. Jindal’s so clueless he doesn’t know how dark his skin is and what these racist republicans say about him behind his back. If he thinks her nomination is so good, I suggest he try stoping at a truck stop in Texas in the middle of the night to get something to eat and see what reception he get.

  11. P.D. says:

dbadass@9, Yeah, maybe she suntans with Bohner? Or Ensign. She would be right at home with those hypocrits.

Gotta love that nude head-and-shoulders shot of Audra, though, huh? Republicans do like them some cheesecake.

  17. Jackie says:

Joe is not only up set with Ms. Shay’s comment but she looks alot like Joe’s secretary that was murdered and he had ordered the investigation dropped. Yes one might ask if Joe see’s dead people or how he’s a champion for Equal Rights? Let’s see Joe is a KKK member so the Equal Rights is out. Joe got away with murder and he can trick the voters into voting for him back in office. Joe knows there’s big money as he was once a Congressman and stole. Now it’s time to slide back in and get backing to stealing from the taxpayers and laughing all the way to the bank. Look Goldman Sachs was so good at stealing billions from the US Treasury they did it twice and it worked.

  41. MCMetal says:

A newly discovered Facebook thread from June 30 shows Shay’s Obama Derangement Syndrome in full bluster, when she reacted with extreme displeasure with Obama’s cautious stance on the Honduran crisis.

“This is an outrage and I CAN NOT believe this nation has him as our leader! It makes me sick!” She posted a few minutes later: “My disdain for Obama is directly proportionate for his disdain of this country.”

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2009-07-10/the-gops-young-hatemonger/2/

-someone who uses a tanning bed to cover up his ethical bareness(see Bohener,John)
    -the golden girls

That woman and her fellow repiggies are white supremacists through and through.
They see Obama as a racial abomination, and many of them regularly claim that it goes against the Bible.

Some of the anti-abortion noise machines have actually said that an abortion is okay if the fetus is mixed-race.

Why would some of you even vote for repiggies for any local offices? No matter how civilized or rational they may try to appear, the fact that they are repiggies
should tell you that they buy into this racist crap and support it without question.

Please stop voting for these repiggies for anything.

  45. oldfuzz says:

Let’s see if I’ve got this right. Joe wants the Republican National Committee to step in and remove Shay of her rightfully won election? Who will they get to do it? Katherine Harris?

Come on guys. You’re just ticked because she’s a woman. Give her two years and she may quit.

Besides the YRs are the future of the party. You can’t expect Republicans to abandon racism cold turkey.

  46. ralph the wonder locust says:

Oy. Over on the Frago thread we just had a real wing-ding show up.

Too stupid to even take seriously.

  47. Cats r Flyfishn says:

Let’s see, there is Shay, Coulter, Ingram, Liz Cheney, Hasselbach, and the woman on the Fox morning show, just to name a few, that have blond hair. Yikes… these stupid women are giving blonds a bad reputation.

  50. TeleMan says:

The flap over the racist comments seemed to help Shay get elected. The Indianapolis Star reported that many young Republicans flocked to Shay’s side to defend her against what they viewed as “just political mudslinging.”

I was trying to give the Repub’s some credit. I was thinking we, as a country, were beyond this outright racist drivel and they were just whining because they lost big in the elections and the Dem’s were in control.

    They proved me wrong again.

  51. Ed in NJ says:

When Shay first realized there was a controversy, she took down the thread on Facebook and defriended the person who complained about the racist post.

From John Avlon’s reporting at the Daily Beast:

“Shay was silent on this exchange, but soon word started spreading throughout the Young Republican circuit, open to GOP members under 40. Significantly, Shay then “de-friended” Wallender and Conner—in the world of Facebook, that means cutting off relations—after calling her out, but kept Piker as a “friend” (subsequently, it appears their profiles are no longer linked).”

Wallender and Conner has complained on the thread about the coon comment. Pike made the coon comment.

  52. Cats r Flyfishn says:

These vote up and vote down buttons are useless. It looks like everyone has “vote down” points. What’s the purpose?

  53. spencers mom says:

A Tennessee Republican. Any bets she ascended into the lofty heights of GNOPerland based on comments she made during the Harold Ford “call me” racist ad campaign?

And 38 is not young (sorry Zooey, but you know I’m a year senior to you) but I guess the racist MILF image appeals to the base they’re courting.

    PEACE

  54. TeleMan says:

…the first comment arguing against big government…
Shay responded: “You tell em Eric! lol [laughing out loud].”

Bzzzt! Sorry, for the serious subject of gov’t spending, that is an inappropriate response. Shay was agreeing with the commenter’s racist second post.

  55. pags2 says:

This is just another incident that shows the Republicans are trying to re-institutionalize racism and make it acceptable again.

  56. ralph the wonder locust says:

    Cats r Flyfishn says:
These vote up and vote down buttons are useless. It looks like everyone has “vote down” points. What’s the purpose?

It does look that way, but a positive integer represents votes up. A negative integer represents votes down.

A negaive vote can be counteracted by a positive vote, and once the balance reaches -10, the comment is considered “Voted Down” and it gets shunned behind a screen. You still have the opportunity to view the comment if you wish, but those of us who don’t can just skip on by.

  57. Cats r Flyfishn says:

Dr. Matt… thanks for the explanation.

Shay looks a great deal older than 38. What’s with the bags under her eyes? Not getting enough sleep or maybe spending too much energy on hate and racism. That will make someone look old.

  58. handwaver says:

Her comments and reaction are perfectly in line with the attitudes and biases of many (if not most) of her party affiliates. From a reich-wing point of view, she’s totally mainstream and a credit to her race, uh, party.

  70. Mr. Sonia Herecomestheangst says:

I don’t have any problems at all believing Shay has problems with Facebook if she chugs the same bottled water as Miss South Carolina, Miss California and the way under the radar Miss Arizona after spraying on her blush outlines.

Women who pay thousands of dollars in a month for makeup and spray tans, but spend little on food and consider ice cubes a solid meal are the definition of morons.

People all over the world starve because it is out of their own control, but these beauty twats starve their minds on purpose.

  71. eyesopen says:

The Republican Party has unquestionably become the Party of Overt Racism and Sedition. This is, no doubt due to the deep seated racial hatred that they have always harbored which has oozed to the foremost part of their diseased minds since a man of color, Barack Obama, has been elected President.

In the view of each of them, from the most backwards dumbass hinterlands cracker to the best educated southern gentleman holder of high office, there is no civilized restriction on their behavior. They see no reason to subscribe to American values of equality. They feel no need to put up a front of social decency. Their most finely developed skill is a sort of self-hypnosis by which they can accept their own hypocrisy as a proper perc of cleaving to their Good Book while never living up to a word in it.

These unthinking authoritarians have no use for the Constitution which is the United States, and in their efforts to destroy it are engaged in treason as well.

  72. Wiz says:

The mere fact that this story is covered by progressives makes it impossible for a Republican offical to remove someone from party leadership. Can you imagine what Rush would say, kowtowing to the liberal media elite.

  73. Badger1 says:

I’m sure that when “internet cop” Amanda Carpenter breaks this and the Atwater CA Councilman Gary Frago embarrassment, during her segment on the O’Reilly Factor, the MSM can’t ignore it for long!

    Really?
    Complete shills for the far-right?
    Pretend journalists, too?

  76. labman57 says:

Leadership, in part, is about setting the tone regarding what is and is not acceptable. Shay has set the bar fairly low with her obnoxious tone and delivering/embracing disgraceful messages to her peer group.

Unfortunately, this was a predictable outcome of the bigotry and hate-mongering perpetuated by the McCain/Palin ticket and the RNC during the 2008 campaign. These racist and right-wing extremist nut-jobs feel that the GOP mainstream has their backs.

  77. backup says:

The Republican party has to stop tolerating racism if it wants to shake the stigma, but Shays explanation is very plausible.

If she was responding to the racist comment, she should be relieved. If she was responding to the other comment, she should not.

Writing a response to one comment and finding another comment posted by the time yours posts happens here every day.

  81. backup says:

Seemed like a bigot trying to weasel out of her own words.

Maybe so, but you’ve never posted a response to something here and then found another comment had posted in the meantime?

I suggest it’s the reason that we each started our last posts by reposting the comment we are taking about. So people know which comment your addressing.

If she had said something more definitive like: “yeah, government is too big’ or ‘yeah, we do need to take the country’, there would be more information to know her intent.

I don’t know how facebook works, but is it possible that she did not refresh the screen between comment one and comment two (as it happens here at TP)?

If they come only when the screen is refreshed it makes the explanation very plausible.

Despite that plausibility, there is still a problem in that the objectionable commenter is a ‘friend’ on her network.

What is not covered in the TP thread is the rebukes from the other posters on the site:

It didn’t take long for other posters on Shay’s page to do the math. First, Derek Moss wrote “What’s disheartening is the use of the word ‘coon’ in 2009. Wow… I’m usually outnumbered about 500-to-1 on Audra’s threads so go ahead, lemme have it, I deserve it.” He apparently expected to be criticized as among this crowd for calling out the racist comment.

Cassie Wallender, a national committeewoman from the Washington Young Republican Federation, then wrote: “Someone please help a naïve Seattle girl out, is Eric’s comment a racist slur?” She answered her own question one minute later: “Okay, why is this okay? I just looked it up. ‘It comes from a term baracoons (a cage) where they used to place Africans who were waiting to be sent to America to be slaves.’ THIS IS NOT OKAY AND IT’S NOT FUNNY.”

This was followed soon after by the chairman of the D.C. Young Republicans, Sean L. Conner, who wrote “I’m really saddened that you would support this type of racial language. ..wow! Thanks Cassie for standing up…”
