President Obama today reaffirmed his commitment to reforming health care to control costs, provide affordable coverage, and ensure quality care by introducing competition and transparency into the current system. In his speech, Obama also took aim at comments made by one of the most ardent opponents of health reform, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC). DeMint last week declared that he would do everything in his power to kill health reform in the Senate. Obama struck back today by saying the debate “isn’t about me,” but rather a system that is “breaking American families”:
OBAMA: Just the other day, one Republican Senator said, and I’m quoting him now, “if we’re able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo. It will break him.” Think about that. This isn’t about me. This isn’t about politics. It is about a health care system that is breaking American families, breaking America’s businesses and breaking America’s economy.
Watch it:
Obama also extended his deadline for passing health reform. He previously called upon Congress to complete health care before the August recess, but today said, “Let’s pass reform by the end of this year.”
Think about that. This isn’t about me. This isn’t about politics. It is about a health care system that is breaking American families, breaking America’s businesses and breaking America’s economy.
For the American public, it is about fixing a broken system.
For the Publicans, it’s about partisan showmanshit.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:23 pm“Let’s pass reform by the end of this year.”
I’m very sorry to see President Obama caving to the Republics like this. All I know for sure is that as of January, 2010, I will become one of the millions of Americans without health insurance. That scares the begeezes out of me. One significant health issue could end up in wiping out all I have worked for as far as my future is concerned.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:24 pmI am pleased to see Obama single out DeMint, but I am displeased that he is giving in additionally by extending the deadline.
Why does Congress need a vacation? This is not an election year? People are out of work and not taking vacations — they are already at home!
Do the obstructionists need to regroup and perfect their strategy to ruin Obama and see the nation suffer even more?
Pelosi and (chickensh!t) Reid need to get their people in line — no vacations — keep working — no excuses. When the repugs squeal, the people will not be sympathetic.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:25 pmAbout freaking time he stood up and called the obstructionist maniacs. This is leadership. May the rest of the decent members of Congress stand up and follow suit.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:26 pmCan a virus that only targets republicans be developed? Nothing too nasty, just something that would send them all to the hospital. Then, maybe, they would see the need for health care reform.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:26 pm“Obama also extended his deadline for passing health reform.”
This is probably a smart move. It shows that he is still calling the shots but tosses a bone to the blue-dog democrats and some reasonable Republicans (if any.)
July 20th, 2009 at 2:26 pmBilbo, let’s get all we know to press congress to get this done ASAP – if this waits until year end, it won’t be in time for you. And there are many thousands more like you, if not millions.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:26 pmObama is not caving in to the Republicans but more to the Blue Dogs. He is keeping up the pressure on Congress to get the bill done, preferably by October. His statements are giving good cover to the Dems who are concerned about the bill. And his point is well taken.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:27 pmBilbo Hussein Baggins says:
That scares the begeezes out of me. One significant health issue could end up in wiping out all I have worked for as far as my future is concerned.
That is exactly the point that needs to be scaring the begeezes out of everyone.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:30 pmYou can be wiped out even if you have health insurance. Only quicker if you don’t.
Marie,I totally agree, the Dems should pull an all niter for the month of August to get health care passed. This issue is to big to take a vacation. The Dems need to play politics like the re-pukes but with a progressive heart and soul that has empathy towards the 98 percent of us who are struggling day to day.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:30 pmDeMint, yet another demented South Carolinian Republican; can we get them to secede already.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:30 pmDeMint and his ilk are focused only on “breaking” President Obama. Nothing else matters but that. The fact that we have a “health care system that is breaking American families, breaking America’s businesses and breaking America’s economy” doesn’t mean a thing.
In fact, “breaking” Obama will only make the health care system crumble further, as nobody else has any viable ideas for fixing it.
DeMint would readily shoot the sole pilot of a jetliner he was flying on, if he didn’t like that pilot. The fact that the plane would then crash means nothing to him.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:31 pmThe ONLY viable reason I can see for pushing reform off until the end of the year is to put pressure on the blue dogs to sign on to a public option. Several have election races coming up and their constituents overwhelmingly want a public option. Otherwise as history has shown delays are a very bad idea as it gives the lobbyists more time to hand our hard-earned money over to reform foes and it awards Republicans more time to flood the airwaves with the complicity of the “librul” media in their attempts to change public opinion. The delay may backfire for the regressives, though. As more reports are made public (the latest CBO report shows the cost of a public option as breaking even or even turning a profit over the first ten years) the people can see obstruction for what it is. The lies become more transparent as time goes on.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:32 pmCould someone explain the difference to me between a foreign terrorist who claims they want to kill Americans and a Republican Senator who claims he wants to break his President and hurt his fellow senators?
July 20th, 2009 at 2:34 pmWe will spend $2.4 trillion this year alone on H.C. and how much will a public option cost? a lot less than $20 trillion or so over ten years with our current private H.C. and not to mention the millions of foreclosures that will continue without a public option that will be more affordable.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:36 pmLet the blue dogs and the regressives go back home for the break and listen to their constituents. 71% of the people want a public option, a fact lost on Congresscritters in the DC bubble. Taxpayers need to take the opportunity of the August recess to pressure their representatives like they never have before. Dem and Rep alike need to see that lobby money will only get them so far. Without the support of the voters they will all be looking for new jobs soon (although they will still enjoy a lifetime of gov’t healthcare for them and their families).
July 20th, 2009 at 2:38 pmPresident Obama is not caving to the Repukelicans demands. He just changed the deadline which to me is just good politicking. And he knows he can use his signing authority as well if need be to pass the bill.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:42 pmrayall01 says:
Can a virus that only targets republicans be developed? Nothing too nasty, just something that would send them all to the hospital. Then, maybe, they would see the need for health care reform.
Better yet, it should be something that is not covered by their current plan; so they get a big bill when they get home and have to spend hours on the phone trying to straighten it out.
I am self-employed. I was denied by 3 insurance companies because of a pre-existing condition. The company I did get carved this out, so I have no coverage for it. The coverage I do have is barely adequate. If I were to get a serious illness, it would bankrupt me–no doubt. I call my representatives every week to urge them to support reform.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:44 pmBy the end of the year?
July 20th, 2009 at 2:45 pmI forgot to mention at 14 that breaking the President and hurting his fellow senators involved blocking a program that would result in the deaths of many Americans.
At least the terrorists are doing their thing for holy reasons. DeMint is doing his for money. They are both nuts.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:45 pmIs DeMint channeling Eric Rudolph?
July 20th, 2009 at 2:48 pmThe president knows that an 19th-century nostalgic senator from a crumbling state with nothing to offer has no business controlling the debate for improved access to care in America.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:49 pmHeck, anything riveting out of a place like South Carolina must come through Argentina.
Obama extending the time table for healthcare is a smart move, and just goes to show, we have a realist for President. Repugs and blue dogs have done a good job getting people to think that their taxes are going to go up and the deficit will balloon by trillions of dollars. The President needs to go into campaign mode and really get the people back on his side, otherwise there will be no healthcare reform.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:50 pmmemo to flunky card boy:
Action items for next few days:
July 20th, 2009 at 2:52 pmFetch burgers for your masters.
Find rusty barbed wire for self administered colonoscopy.
STFU.
Critics are not admitting that the projected costs of health care reform is over TEN YEARS!!!
July 20th, 2009 at 2:53 pmThe administration must get out in front, louder and more forcefully.
Republicans were banking on that August deadline for an excuse to kill off reform. Now where do you think you’re going, firebreathers?
July 20th, 2009 at 2:54 pmA Patriotic Anopheles Acting says: Let the blue dogs and the regressives go back home for the break and listen to their constituents. 71% of the people want a public option, a fact lost on Congresscritters in the DC bubble
Exactly! I’m more concerned about trying to ram through a bill that’s not well-crafted in order to meet some artificial deadline. When Congress goes home for their break, they’ll find bi-partisan support among their contituents for a public option and higher taxes for the super-rich. Let’s get this done right.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:54 pmSen. Jim DeMint (R-SC)
What with this creep and “King David” Sanford, I’m beginning to think secession was a good idea – for the rest of us!
July 20th, 2009 at 2:54 pmIn fact, “breaking” Obama will only make the health care system crumble further, as nobody else has any viable ideas for fixing it.
No viable ideas????? SINGLE PAYER!!!! IT’S THAT SIMPLE. THE BUDGET OFFICE WOULD TELL YOU IT IS THE BEST OPTION.
OBAMA IS PROTECTING THE CORPORATIONS AND HE KNOWS THAT….SO NOW IS THE EXTRA TIME REQUIRED NEEDED TO SET UP A GAME PLAN FOR SINGLE PAYER?????
Time will tell….until then , WE DO HAVE A VIABLE OPTION…JUST ONE POLITICIANS DON’T LIKE…EVEN OBAMA.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:56 pmDarn right, Marie.
Kennedy’s bill over 10 years would be the price of the pentagon for 1 year.
Maybe that’s what republicans have in mind, sending in the national guard to off those burdensome sick people.

watchdog says:
Republicans have no health reform ideas, but they sure know how to invent the next salacious talking point.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:00 pmB.O.’s Obamascare is going to go down in flames just like Hillary’s did in the 90’s.
You speak definitively on matter as if to cover up the real intent on your part: to see Obama gutted politically.
People want a public option and they should have the option to put their money where they please. If it’s in the government with reduced overhead, that’s would be none of your damn business. You’re free to continue doing business with your bloated private insurer.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:05 pmProgressives can’t wait to stick it to these greedy companies. who cares if it puts 5 Million people out of work. If the health care reform bill gets passed like it is 5 million will lose their jobs in 3 to 4 years.
Where are your stats that 5 million people work for insurance companies????
It didn’t matter that millions in the Auto industry lost there jobs over the last year.
It didn’t matter that millions of jobs were lost to FREE TRADE.
Now your worried about more jobs being lost to reform? Here’s some information for you…if single payer was enacted, who do you think the goverment needs to do the massive amount of administration work required????? Thats right, people who worked in the feild!!
Look up HR676 BILL. In the bill it addresses the transition of jobs from insurance based employers to state and federal employers.
WATCH , LOOK , LEARN and stop being so American!!!
July 20th, 2009 at 3:06 pmRealitycheck,
July 20th, 2009 at 3:06 pmAs I have always said to someone with your attitude,
may you always be blessed with good health.
Obama also extended his deadline for passing health reform.
way too bad about that…
Ed Schultz plans (or planned) to call for congress to forget about that august recess until the plan is finished…
now THAT would’ve been a great idea…
guess it’s moot now…
but, as to calling out “one Republican Senator”, we need more of that… but use names…
damn… i was thrilled until i read that extend the deadline part…
July 20th, 2009 at 3:09 pmAs I recall, there never was a real deadline for August. It seems to me that they had just said that they would devote a bunch of time to health care leading up to the recess. But I don’t recall anyone saying “we’re going to have this done by…”
Either way, as an old moderate with some conservative leanings (the old conservative, not the new batsh!t kind), I don’t have an issue with being thorough and careful or even playing politics. And, considering the inertia of old policy that must be overcome, I’m not averse to small steps and half-measures.
And we always have to keep in mind that the new leadership in Washington can’t afford a loud disaster. The Dems can solidify control without a loud success but they can lose it with one phuck up.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:10 pmHe is failing on the economy and doesn’t want to be humiliated by failing on socialized health care. It is a shame that we elected someone so unqualified for the job of President.
Shut the Fu** up ….Bush failed for eight years a-hole.
Six months in and he’s a failure….once again,, SHUT THE FU** UP!!! For the good of your country.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:16 pmIt would be expected to have a few bugs in a new health care plan for a year or so. Just as new car models and other products usually need some revisions/improvements.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:16 pmBut I do agree with the idea of having to do it as carefully as possible which sometimes takes a little more time.
Proud, you didn’t elect him, we did. That’s why you’re whining. I love the sound…….more please.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:18 pmHe doesn’t get a say. If he doesn’t want to be a doctor and all he is interested in is profit, let him go back to school and learn a new trade.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:20 pmNothing done? I love that one!
Not to mention the confirmation hearings, taking over from incompetent boobs who left a mess, two wars, international diplomacy, and reinventing the image of our country, the Congress has done this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acts_of_the_111th_United_States_Congress
You can take your “nothing done” fold it four ways, light it on fire, and ram it up your Southern orifice, stupid troll.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:20 pmGo ask your doctor how he likes the prospect of becoming a federal employee.
That’s how much you know about Single Payer. THE GOVERNMENT JUST PAYS THE BILLS…ALL DOCTORS WORK FOR THEMSELVES(private practice), HOSPITALS ARE STILL PRIVATELY OWNED.
Medical Boards set up the pricing fee’s and the government just pays the fee’s. Fees are negotiated by doctors and the boards….just so you know for next time.
SO STOP TALKING ABOUT SHITE YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT AND DO US A FAVOR….WATCH LOOK LEAR AND STOP BEING SO AMERICAN!!
Get your facts right pin head(code word for republican)!!!!
July 20th, 2009 at 3:20 pmwatchpuppy, I would check with my doctor, but first I have to check with my insurance company lackey to see if they like my doctor.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:23 pmGosh, Proud sure seems angry at Obama for not having instituted “socialized health care” yet. Who knew that Proud was short for “Proud Commie Pinko”?
July 20th, 2009 at 3:23 pmLooking around I can’t find the whole speech or any clarification of “end of the year”. Is it possible he meant “end of the session” and he just misspoke?
July 20th, 2009 at 3:25 pmHow many more Friedman Units before we get Universal Health Care?
How many more Friedman Units until our troops are out of Iraq?
Obama has one down, 7 to go in his first term…
July 20th, 2009 at 3:29 pmI’ve been on Medicare for a few years. Signing up for the prescription plan was harrowing but, aside from that, it’s the best insurance I’ve ever had. I’ve never been refused any service and my doctors seem happy and well fed.
Fraud is a problem with any human endeavor and while it’s disturbing that it exists, the fraud involved in Medicare (usually committed by one of those poor doctors who hate it so much), pales in comparison to the fraud in the private insurance industry. The fact is that Medicare works and has served tens of millions of people well. We could do a lot worse than Medicare for everyone and the increased funding could be used, in part, to try and prevent fraud.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:32 pmGlad to see Obama throw DeMint under the bus. Anyone who would wish failure on our President doesn’t give a shyte about our country and does not deserve to be a Senator.
I was hoping that Obama would put pressure on Congress to get healthcare legislation passed prior to the August break. The Congress does not deserve a break until the job gets done! How about they get stripped of their health insurance until the legislation is passed?!
July 20th, 2009 at 3:33 pmWatchdog,
Watch PBS’ wide angle program on Mozambique training midwives to do complicated C-sections. They are having excellent results.
You think maybe the doctors here might be overpaid?
July 20th, 2009 at 3:36 pmThink how much money we could save on health care if we had such a program. These women were more interested in the well-being of the mothers and babies than money.
The only reason you *KNOW* about MEDICARE and MEDICAID FRAUD is that they *TRACK* and *REPORT* IT – unlike the SCAM FEST known as *PRIVATE* INSURANCE
Thank you!!! We are not alone…we outnumber them…who’s them….the idiot americans who follow Fox and are republican.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:38 pmGo ask your doctor how he likes the prospect of becoming a federal employee. Medicare and Medicaid lose an estimated $60 billion or more annually to fraud, including $2.5 billion in South Florida.
So wrangling in some of this fraud would be a horrible idea?
Who the hell stated combating fraud would be a “horrible idea”? The same people who don’t think much of these federal programs tend to be the source of the fraud, hospitals and the like. They milk the public trough. HCA, whose hack is running TV propaganda, was fined $1.7 billion for defrauding the system. If they abuse, they will be rooted out and fined and prosecuted. Just because your corporate scam artists don’t respect the system doesn’t mean everyone has to suffer.
And you keep up the tabloidal talking points. A reformed payment system that expands access is hardly putting doctors on the federal payroll. Cut the crap.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:40 pmLooky here, stupid trolls. The “do nothing Congress” passed a Bill to prevent, investigate, and prosecute fraud cases. And they sent it to the Presidents desk the same day as another Bill.

July 20th, 2009 at 3:44 pmwatchpuppy, 75% reduction in income under health care reform bill? Facts, links to facts, please.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:45 pmThe major stumbling block with the Blue Dogs is the way to pay for the bill. There are going to be 5 versions of the bill in Congress; two of the plans have not come out of the Senate committees. It would be in Obama’s interest to get this done before August so that the Dems can work to get to a final bill during the recess. If the bills don’t come out until September then it is going to take a lot of last minute wrangling to get a bill done and that could doom health care. Obama keeps making concessions to the Blue Dogs and it is time for them to make concessions to get this done.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:47 pmIf all of the scare tactics of the Right were even close to true Medicare and Medicaid would have gone under years ago in a flurry of lawsuits.
Keep squealing, little piggies. There are systems out there that work, don’t put megadollars into corporate profits and it scares the living crap out of you. Keep paying the trolls to whine for you.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:48 pmLets recap, Obama in the White House, Majority in the House and a “Super” majority in the Senate. With all of that power you idiots still can’t get anything done. Of course Bambi has to move the goal posts, he can read the poll numbers on the teleprompter. He is failing on the economy and doesn’t want to be humiliated by failing on socialized health care. It is a shame that we elected someone so unqualified for the job of President.
He’s proven himself to be perfectly qualified, unafraid to deal with multiple issues at once. You’re simply not used to leadership based on the issues; it’s eluded you the past eight years and hardened your permanent campaign mode mentality. You’re used to having a president who moves as slow as molasses on the issues and leaves a lot of downtime in between to promote chatter against the “defeatocrats.” What new nickname did Georgie give a hapless bystander today? Did Barney learn any new tricks? (I’ll give you a moment to reign in your mouth watering.)
July 20th, 2009 at 3:49 pmwatchpuppy, answer the question. Show us the facts and links to those facts about a 75% reduction in income by the health care bill. If not, STFU.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:52 pmThe simple “crux” of the health care situation (and the endgame) is quite simple:
Reduce Cost.
Cover all Americans.
Strive for medical excellence.
If these 3 core values and objectives are not met…why bother?
Take the necessary time and get it done right…the FIRST time…once, and for all.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:53 pmObama also extended his deadline for passing health reform. He previously called upon Congress to complete health care before the August recess, but today said, “Let’s pass reform by the end of this year.”
Okay. He’s folded.
Health care reform is dead.
Now what are you gonna do?
July 20th, 2009 at 3:55 pmYes, no fraud occurs with private insurers. Nobody has to call their congressman because insurer the great refuses to pay for that breast cancer treatment. Everything should stay the same because GOOPERS like watchdog have no ideas to improve upon it and senators like Demint have no monetary incentive.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:57 pmFrom the stupid trolls article:
And some of the other numbers in the troll’s article don’t ad up. It heavily quotes a particular Miami Herald article that differs from other sources. In particulr it doesn’t differentiate between errors and fraud and I can’t find the numbers for recoveries made.
Thankfully, Congress and the Obama Administration are increasing enforcement across the board and the days of raping the economy may be coming to a close.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:58 pmHERE is a great summation of WHY we can not get a real health care program:

July 20th, 2009 at 3:59 pmTroll: Never get sick! Durrrr!
Of course it is political.
The way that the Pukes get control back is if Obama fails significantly to meet the expectations he himself set when he sought election, no matter how exaggerated or rhetorical they may have been at the time.
Of COURSE the pukes see this in terms of defeating Obama. nd, despite his rhetorical flourishes, Obama regards it as a political contest, too. One in which he ABSOLUTELY MUST be able to claim a victory. If health-care reform fails, he a lame-duck. He knows it and the Puke know it…
July 20th, 2009 at 4:08 pmMedicare fraud????? what about this;
Washington Post, May 11 2009
The effort has alarmed many Democrats and liberal health-care advocates, who are pushing back with attacks highlighting Scott’s ouster as head of the Columbia/HCA health-care company amid a fraud investigation in the 1990s. The firm eventually pleaded guilty to charges that it overbilled state and federal health plans, paying a record $1.7 billion in fines.
LOOK WHO IS DOING THE FRAUD!!!!
July 20th, 2009 at 4:14 pmWell, well. Not only did the troll provide a link to a study by a wholly owned subsidiary of United Health Group, he lied about the conclusion. Surprised?
His link is to a PDF. On page 20, C. Provider Impacts, it says that net provider income would go up, do to fewer people who can’t pay, but the gains may be offset. I can’t find anything in the document that comes anywhere near saying anyone would see a 75% reduction in income.

RICH SCOTT…..1.7 BILLION IN FINES ….WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY NOW?????
July 20th, 2009 at 4:17 pmFrom the above link to the Bill Moyers essay:
(pretty clear to me if we NEVER get health care reform…WHY).
“…meet H. Edward Hanway, the Chairman and CEO of Cigna, the country’s fourth largest insurance company. At the beginning of the year, Cigna blamed hard economic times when it announced the layoff of 1,100 employees. But it reported first quarter profits of $208 million on revenues of $4 billion. Mr. Hanway has announced his retirement at the end of the year, and the living will be easy, financially at least. He made $11.4 million dollars in 2008, according to the Associated Press, and some years more than that.
That’s a lot of oysters, although he lags behind Ron Williams, the CEO of Aetna Insurance, who made more than $17 million dollars last year, or John Hammergren, the head of McKesson, the biggest health care company in the world. His compensation was nearly $30 million.
Here’s the difference. To Dr. Regina Benjamin, health care is a service, helping people in need with grace and compassion. To Ed Hanway and his highly paid friends, it’s big business, a commodity to be sold to those who can afford it. And woe to anyone who gets between them and the profits they reap from sick people.
That behavior includes spending nearly a million and a half a day–a day!–to make sure health care reform comes out their way. Over the years they’ve lavished millions on the politicians who are writing and voting on the bills coming out of committee. Now it’s payback time. See for yourself here on our website, where you’ll find a link to campaign contributions and the politicians who right now are deciding who wins and who loses the heath care debate.”
Pretty much sums it all up, at least to me…
July 20th, 2009 at 4:18 pmIn fact. The most pessimistic figure I can find in the troll’s own document is that physician income might go down 5.4%. But that seems to be a worst possible case scenario.

July 20th, 2009 at 4:36 pmActually, RHF, what I’ve skimmed of the Lewin Group report isn’t that bad. I haven’t read it carefully but I can’t find anything like what the troll is claiming. As usual, the stupid troll didn’t bother reading his source. He heard some ReichRadio or FAUX squawker make a ridiculous claim and ran with it.
And, of course, our pointing that out to hm will just imprint the misinformation more strongly. He’s now convinced that every doctor in the country will be panhandling within hours of a health care bill being passed.
July 20th, 2009 at 4:37 pmShow me one incidence of anyone here calling him a Messiah.
July 20th, 2009 at 4:37 pmThat shites so old it’s laughable.Like most trolls.
Especially our bottom feeding ones.

1) Private, for profit care costs more
In Canada and in the United States, there is no evidence that for-profit care costs less. Every piece of evidence shows the opposite. (All dollar figures are Canadian unless otherwise noted
Exhibit A: According to the New England Journal of Medicine, between 1990 and 1994, private, for-profit hospitals in the U.S. had higher costs ($8,115 US) for every discharged patient than private, non-profit hospitals ($7,490 US) and public hospitals ($6,507 US)1.
2) Private, for-profit care does not reduce waiting times
Health care resources cannot be created out of thin air. This is especially true of human resources such as doctors, nurses and other health care professionals.
For a for-profit clinic to open, it needs to hire professional staff. It does so by poaching doctors and other health professionals from the non-profit sector. As some people pay to use for-profit clinics, the waiting list will shorten for those who can’t afford to pay.
3) Private, for-profit care exposes us to trade challenges
There is another strong argument against private, for-profit clinics: NAFTA. The health care sector is only weakly protected by Annex II (c) of the free trade agreement, which stipulates that:
Canada reserves the right to adopt or maintain any measure with respect to the provision of public law enforcement and correctional services, and the following services to the extent that they are social services established or maintained for a public purpose: income security or insurance, social security or insurance, social welfare, public education, public training, health, and child care. July 20th, 2009 at 4:38 pmYou still haven’t told me what you will do if your predictions prove false. Will you be big enough to admit you were wrong or will you project some weird shit about the media fooling the people or some such crap?
Angry??? I’m ecstatic over the beginning of the demise of the Messiah…I’m sure all of you true believers are having a hard time with America’s buyer’s remorse…
He’s slowly steering the rusted statusquomobile off the cliff and he’ll be jumping out and leaving Boner and Can’tor screaming in the backseat.
July 20th, 2009 at 4:41 pmOT:
Good afternoon, dbadass. We’re still in a drought so all the grass is brown but I’ve yet to see a mosquito. There’s a pair of purple finches that have taken residence on my deck, much to the chagrin of my cat, and lots of bunnies now that they are big enough to explore.
July 20th, 2009 at 4:44 pmLets not forget Rick Scotts old company….1.7 billion in fines!!! for medicare fraud.
This is the same ass-hol who puts on commercials telling us how bad the Canadian system is….sure it’s bad, how else am I going to rip off the public????? eh Rick?????
July 20th, 2009 at 4:46 pmpurple finch! Damn that is yet another bird which has become increasingly rare in these parts…
July 20th, 2009 at 4:49 pm“I WILL return in 2012 to dance on the grave of the Great Black Hope…if this shithole of a site still exists…”
“..I’m sure all of you true believers are having a hard time with America’s buyer’s remorse…”
Actually, I really used to really try, very hard, to believe in the people of our Nation…unlike you, who obviously relish in calamity, rather than making the Nation better for all that live here.
You sir, have truly revealed the core of that “tired” (because of the ilk of you) relevant phrase: “The Ugly American”.
July 20th, 2009 at 4:50 pmI love the way that Obama can just cut people off at the knees with his words, something that Bush could never do. He just called out DeMint. Unfortunately, it went over the heads of the trolls and all the other Limbaugh worshipers.
July 20th, 2009 at 4:56 pmI hadn’t seen a purple finch in years, before these two showed up. And I wouldn’t have given them a glance if the cat hadn’t reacted. But they seem to show up every evening and chirp until the cat starts chattering. They don’t mind me moving around and seem to enjoy the poor kitty’s discomfort.
July 20th, 2009 at 5:17 pmwell, after FINALLY reading through the comments – well, up to 50, when it started getting poopy – i can better understand and get behind extending the deadline… not much choice…
but this helped:
A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:
Let the blue dogs and the regressives go back home for the break and listen to their constituents. 71% of the people want a public option, a fact lost on Congresscritters in the DC bubble. Taxpayers need to take the opportunity of the August recess to pressure their representatives like they never have before.
guess it’s time to jump back into the letter writing…
i made up this bumper sticker real quick today before my errands:
Tell SHIMKUS you want
the SAME SOCIALIST
HEALTHCARE HE HAS.
i hope the meaning is clear… lots of dittohead teabaggers around here…
maybe it will make them think…
July 20th, 2009 at 5:30 pm51 and 10—my favorite numbers.

Make up your mind, trolls. Is Obama “doing nothing” or “overplaying his hand”? You do realize those two are mutually exclusive, don’t you?
As for poll numbers, have you checked out the approval ratings for GOoPers on the same issues? They are still trailing by more than twenty points and falling faster than Obama’s numbers.
Both of those polls match predictions, BTW. No one’s numbers will go up until the economy turns around. Stopping the free fall is a good start but it will take a recovering job market before anyone gets too excited.
July 20th, 2009 at 6:38 pmBTW. The DOW went up another 108 points today and new jobless claims went down last week.
July 20th, 2009 at 6:39 pmchuck todd just said on hardball that there is more money being spent ADVOCATING for Obama’s plan, than arguing AGAINST it…
i find that hard to believe.
anyone elce?
i think he was attempting to make the argument, ’so it’s hard to imagine why obama is having such a hard time here’…
July 20th, 2009 at 7:14 pmRealityPunk, Watchweasel, Acedickhead, you all just go down like a crackwhore. I dont even have to see any part of the ignorant, pathetic loser, talking points you spew. They are gone. Raptured. Swirling to the sewer where they belong. You are all losers and morons. The adults can talk and its like you dont even exist. I love this new feature. All of you worthless punks are just wasting your time even posting Oh yeah, life is good.
July 21st, 2009 at 12:55 amWow. The trolls are really scared of Barack Obama. :-)
It’s ok, trollies. You will benefit from health care reform, too.
July 21st, 2009 at 2:40 am“Little Johnny purposely irritates, or makes little Joey mad, in front of little Sally. Johnny decides to ‘punch’ Joey…only what Johnny forgets, is that little Joey is much larger than Johnny, and is very likely to hit back!” The point here, once taught in elementary schools, is that violence doesn’t pay; violent literary allusions, should initially, be considered as ineffective! ‘Yellow journalism’ may also be distinguished from the Manly Art of Boxing, where a skilled Referee patrols the ring, protecting two civilized boxers expositing their quick-thinking and coordination, according to clearly understood, fair, and pre-arranged rules?!
July 21st, 2009 at 7:00 amRecently Bill Moyers on PBS had on Wendell Potter Cigna Insurance Executive. Wendell revealed the dirty tricks employed by Republicans and the Health Care Industry to maintain status quo.(see interview on youtube)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-M10jDkmm0
Pollster Frank Luntz has authored a memo that the Republican Party is following word for word titled
“The Language of Healthcare”
http://wonkroom.thinkprogress.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/frank-luntz-the-language-of-healthcare-20091.pdf
The Memo is their talking points / marching orders with a decietful misinformation campaign of lies to kill the bill.
The combination of these two sources of information reveal a strong undeniable disinformation strategy that has fooled to many Americans.
July 24th, 2009 at 2:53 amIf every American would see these two sources (links) I dont think Republicans would ever attempt to lie again.
Its time we show America the facts and let Americans decide the future of the Republican Party.
The two links above are the SMOKING GUN Republicans do not want to publisize . Please review the two sources and do everything you can to get them out to the media.
God Bless America
