Fox News Guest Ralph Peters Suggests Taliban Should Kill U.S. Soldier If He Deserted

Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl, the U.S. soldier who has been captured by the Taliban and appears in a video released this weekend by his captors, “went missing from his base in eastern Afghanistan on June 30.” The circumstances of his capture are still unknown. ABC News reports, “Defense officials said it appeared he somehow left his base in Paktika Province at night, likely accompanied by several Afghan soldiers.” On July 6, the Taliban claimed that “a drunken American soldier had come out of his garrison” and was captured by them.

On Fox News yesterday, guest Ralph Peters, a retired Army Lt. Col., urged against leaping to conclusions. “I was to stress first of all that we must wait until all of the facts are in until we make a final judgment,” Peters said, but quickly added, “He is an apparent deserter,” “he is collaborating with the enemy,” and “we know that this private is a liar.” Peters then suggested that if Bergdahl is a deserter, the Taliban should kill him:

I want to be clear. If, when the facts are in, we find out that through some convoluted chain of events, he really was captured by the Taliban, I’m with him. But, if he walked away from his post and his buddies in wartime, I don’t care how hard it sounds, as far as I’m concerned, the Taliban can save us a lot of legal hassles and legal bills.

Fox News host Julie Banderas tried to soften Peters’ remark by concluding, “Regardless of what the situation is, we do not want to see any U.S. soldier in harm’s way. And we hope that this guy gets out of there safely. He’s an American – he’s one of ours.” Watch it:

Jonthan Turley comments that “Peters appears to view trials as something of an unnecessary expense.” Michelle Malkin applauds Peters’ “tough words.”

Shorter Peters, “That soldier’s death would be good for the neocons.”

  2. Chyron HR says:

Peters said, but quickly added, “He is an apparent deserter,” “he is collaborating with the enemy,” and “we know that this private is a liar.”

Of course, back in 2008 these were considered sterling qualifications to be the GOP’s presidential candidate.

  3. DallasNE says:

More right wing empathy on display. Or, rather, lack thereof.

Peters is jumping to all kind of conclusions regarding the events. First, it sounds like Bergdahl may have been suckered into a trap the Taliban had set. Did Bergdahl use bad judgement. You bet. Is he a deserter. Highly unlikely and not even a military court would arrive at that conclusion.

Peters sounds like an Oliver North wantabe looking for his own show on Fox. Was this his audition?

  4. 5th Estate says:

“he is collaborating with the enemy,” and “we know that this private is a liar.”

How the hell does does EX=Lt. Colonel Peters KNOW all this about the soldier?

Also “under duress or not he’s collaborating with the enemy“.
So John McCain would be a traitor then?

  5. Wiz says:

Even though “the facts are not in” Fox puts a guy on calling for the death of a US Soldier. It is beyond disgusting. If Fox ever has this guy on again they are in effect endorsing what he is saying.

  6. pags2 says:

The best course of action for the media is a blackout on the situation so as not to give publicity to the Taliban. Leave it to Fox to try and whip people into a frenzy. These type of comments should be condemned in the MSM.

  7. RUCeriousMaggot! says:

If Peters had a shred of decency, he’d offer to give himself to the Taliban in exchange for this soldier.
What? He wouldn’t? Wow. What a flipping coward.

  11. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

How sad that a retired army colonel would want to see a soldier, even a deserter, tortured to death. Is this the America of “good guys” I was told of as a child?

I would like to email Ralph Peters and express my opinion to him. When you wish someone would be tortured to death simply because they deserted, without even knowing why they deserted, you show that you are not one of the “good guys”.

Mr. Peters does not deserve to be given a microphone, and if FOX news were a legitimate news operation, they would never have invited this person to use theirs. FOX news is a magnet for Americans that are not “good guys”.

There must be some way FOX news can be banned from broadcasting and we best ban them as soon as possible.

  12. 5th Estate says:

This deserter charge being thrown around sounds like utter bullshit.

When was the last time anyone deserted from the US military?

Why would this soldier desert in enemy territory?

If he wanted to get out of fighting he could have “accidentally” discharged his weapon into his foot.

Why/How was this soldier able to “wander off”? What does that say about his fellow troops or the command structure?
NO soldier goes ANYWHERE alone—because of the “band of brothers” mentality if nothing else—unless a soldier is LEFT ALONE to begin with ( i.e. shunned?).

  21. Briseadh na Faire says:

Just remember, FOX has millions of viewers who agree with whatever it broadcasts. While we may find the Lt. Colonels words appalling, millions of followers agree with him.

They have a lynch-mob mentality: trial by media, then hanging. Their group-thing gives them comfort in that “majority rules” absolves each individual from individual responsibility.

If you don’t understand the enemy, you cannot defeat it. The mob will always need a leader; one who feeds its fears and provides weak victims as sacrifices. Notice how often its spokespersons portray their opponents as weak?

Those who negotiate are weak. Those who compromise are weak. Those who resort to violence first and ask questions later are strong. This is primal. This is mob-think. This is what is left of the Republican Party. This is Fox’s viewing audience.

Hi tony. But but but Democrats hate the troops.

    Democrats.

    Democrats.

    Democrats.

I tried for the life of me to read through the posts disputed by our visitors and couldn’t find anything that remotely advocated harm to Pfc. Bergdahl. Some people are quick to ignore the thouroughness of these posts just to get a rise out of their own emotions.

Lt. Col. Peters, however — no way was he taken out of context. His commentary is knuckle-dragging nastiness. Whether it opens up a debate for treason, could itself be up for debate.

  31. barrelhse says:

  32. angels81 says:

CheeseFlap, hopefully when Lt. Col Peters pulls the rip cord, the shoot doesn’t open.

  33. 5th Estate says:

I just realized that Peter’s comment about Bergdahl “collaborating” is because you can’t see any signs of physical abuse on him in the video.

If Bergdahl had a split lip and some major bruising, then Peters would call him a hero, and would be OUTRAGED by his brutal treatment.

As a PFC., Bergdahl is not going to have much in the way of useful information to divulge to the Taliban, so there’s no point in beating anything out of him. The Taliban have managed stay in the fight for 7 years and they know all they need to know in general about their enemy already.

PFC.Bergdahl has no intelligence value, but he does have propaganda and hostage value. He looks like he’s being treated humanely, and note that the video shows him eating to reinforce that impression.

Whilst POW’s duty is to deny his or her captors any useful intelligence and to misdirect or confound them if possible, it is also their duty to STAY ALIVE and that means conforming to the realities of captivity too.
If a POW acts like a cornered badger all the time, he or she will suffer physical retribution which will then compromise any escape attempt because of physical debilitation.
This is how soldiers are INSTRUCTED to act wehn captured.

EX-Lt. Colonel Peters should KNOW all this, but now he’s out of the army his duty is to his own political convictions and the “mission” of FOX News–his paymaster–and NOT to a fellow soldier.

Peters is exploiting Bergdahl’s situation for his own twisted benefit, NOT providing an expert impartial perspective.

Texas and finished up as Dep. Chief of Staff for Intelligence, retiring in 1998.

Peters’s first novel was Bravo Romeo, a spy thriller set in West Germany. His novels progressed from futuristic scenarios involving Red Army to contemporary terrorism and failed state issues. His characters are often presented as military mavericks who have the knowledge and courage to tackle problems others can’t or won’t.

    ____________________________________________________________

Or without even knowing IF they deserted. Desertion is a deliberate act, and not always synonymous with “wandering off”. We’ve heard a number of reports about the circumstances surrounding this soldier’s capture (all conjecture, it seems), including rumors that he may have been intoxicated or disoriented.

It would seem that until we get all the facts, people like Peters might find it more prudent to just STFU.

I remember during the Vietnam War, we prayed for our POWs and MIAs. We wore bracelets to remind us who they were. I don’t remember anybody putting them in categories — “those who deserted”, “those who wandered off”, “those who were taken captive heroically, kicking and screaming”, etc.

  55. gummble-bee-itch says:

Judging from face time given to Peters and some of the comments surfacing from Wingnut trolls, I think we’ll be seeing a major shift from the usual “support our troops” meme. The conflict in Afghanistan is rapidly becoming “Obama’s War”, with the implication that anyone dying over there is Obama’s fault, and any criticism of the Commander In Chief is perfectly fine. It will no longer be true that any faint suggestion of criticism of American military personnel will create calls of treason from the Wingers.

His novels progressed from futuristic scenarios involving Red Army to contemporary terrorism and failed state issues. His characters are often presented as military mavericks who have the knowledge and courage to tackle problems others can’t or won’t.

Peters supported the Iraq invasion, dismissed suggestions of a civil war (which did happen in the form of Shia and Sunni militias violent partitioning of Baghdad).

After the 2006 elections, Peters said without a trace of irony: “No matter how many troops we send, we’re bound to fail if the troops aren’t allowed to fight – under the leadership of combat commanders, not politically attuned bureaucrats in uniform” and then went on to complain that war can’t be conducted “on the cheap”—even though that’s exactly what the Bush administration had done, BUT he criticized the proposed “Surge”.
Until July 2007, when he praised “the Surge” even though it hadn’t actually accomplished anything by then (and Petraeus’s bogus report wasn’t made until September 2007).

Fifth Estate @ #63 linked: (Peters’) characters are often presented as military mavericks who have the knowledge and courage to tackle problems others can’t or won’t.

That’s why he’s retired relatively young for a career officer – in the Army, “maverick” equals lack of discipline, someone who thinks he knows better than the people above him, someone who does not follow the chain of command (a BIG sin in the Army). I wouldn’t be at all surprised if his “resignation” wasn’t voluntary. Thus the public trashing of his superiors as “politically attuned bureaucrats in uniform.”

The President and the Congress support the efforts in Afghanistan. Conservatives support the efforts in Afghanistan. Even many progressives that ardently opposed the War in Iraq and the previous administration’s handling of the war in Afghanistan, now support the war under President Obama.

With the relative unity of American support, I think the obvious attempts to propagandize this soldier under duress by the Taliban, will more likely solidify American opposition to the Taliban, than it will generate either support for their cause or calls for American withdrawal.

The Taliban should give back the soldier. If they harm or kill the soldier, it will only cause those that have doubts about our involvement in the war to concede there may be justification for it.

  80. OMPundit says:

Meh, if he was a deserter then he does deserve to die! If not, then every effort should be used to bring him home safely.

  81. dbadass says:

Wiz, Would you happen to know my friend Daryll or is it Darryl by any chance?

  82. backup says:

Wiz. I just disagree that if you retire as a Lt. Col you are a screw up or a dumbass.

This guy retired as a Lt. Col after 27 years and two tours in combat.

Listen to the audio and let me know if you still stand by the generalization:

  83. backup says:

Clarification: By this guy, I’m referring to Lt. Col Andrew Horne of the audio.

  84. Alejandro says:

Damn. Those comments are really indefensible.

  85. nanlichi says:

Repugnicunts like you give Faux it’s bad name.

  86. 4httr says:

Colonel Peters is ex-military and yet suggests that the Taliban would save everyone lots of trouble by executing their hostage.Did Peters serve in an American version of the Waffen SS ?

  87. Allegra says:

What a despicable man this Peters is.

At least Gates had the appropriate reaction.

    Why are neocons so hateful?

  88. marlow says:

You never leave a soldier behind. Ever. No matter what you think the facts are. Colonel Peters is a MAGGOT. A disgrace to whatever uniform he wears.

  89. neoconsrscum says:

Uh hunh. Caught a little on Countdown.
But I didn’t find out for sure that THIS SORRY- ASS PIECE OF S-H-I-Twas spotlighted on Fo-KKKS- “news” until reading this.

  90. neoconsrscum says:

    Hey Allegra:

Why, that would be because NEOCONS AE SCUM.

Lt Col. Peter is a POS. Who but FoKKKs would put shit like that (him) on?

  91. carlyt says:

This guy should be fired and traded to the Taliban for Bergdahl. There is a related post at http://iamsoannoyed.com/?page_id=588

  92. Bill777 says:

Lt Col Peters can go screw himself!

  93. naplesbob says:

This Lt. Col. Peters is what we called a Cheese D**K. He needs to be taken outside and pounded on for a while. In Viet-Nam this B**ch would have gotten fragged; hey that sounds like a good idea right now. Lt. Col. Peters; I Robert Jenkins of Naples, Florida do challenge you to a fist fight. I think a little B**ch like you will decline; but my offer is open. Contact me at naplesbob1@embarqmail.com, you cowardly stupid B**ch. Come on I double dog dare you!!!!!

  94. threelilbiggs says:

To the family of Bowe Bergdahl:
PLEASE don’t listen to the irresponsible words of the Lt. Col. Peters. Not all AMERICANS think as this ass does! Let us know how we can help get Bowe returned safely to the great Northwest. Our prayers are with you!
    As for Lt. Col. Peters:
It is because of the 100s of thousands of soldiers like PFC Bergdahl that jerks like you can make the unsubstantiated comments you made – or have you forgotten that?
    BRING BOWE HOME SAFELY!

  95. naplesbob says:

I figured this Lt Col Coward B**ch wouldn’t answer my challenge. I think he is such a cowardly b**ch; he just may disappear. Speaking of cowardly b**chs; did Hannity ever do the water board thing as he stated on the air? Maybe Hannity and Peters should start a new realty show; Who’s the biggest coward?

  96. soylentgreen says:

We helped out a lot of your deserters and draft dodgers from the Vietnam war here in? Sweden. The ones who had enough courage to not haplessly go along and fight that pointless war where the ones with a brain in their skull and I’m glad we could take them.

If you decide to double down, wade further out into the quagmire and start drafting people for Afghanistan and Pakistan, I hope we can do so again.

  97. naplesbob says:

    Lt. Col. Coward Peters,
If ever I get close to you; you will be a very sore and sorry coward. Yes I am making a promise to harm you. Yes you better hope there are people around that care about me, and stop me from pounding you into the dirt. It won’t be concern for you, low life coward, it will be out of concern of me going to jail. Do not you coward slime ever think about coming any where near Florida. If I find out where you are; I will come get you.

  98. blesscurse says:

Peters is the clown who was likened Obama to a Vampire. What about all this talk about supporting our Commander-In-Chief in a “time of war?”
