Executives receive one-third of all pay in the U.S.

wsjcharteditAccording to a Wall Street Journal analysis of Social Security Administration data, more than one-third of all pay in the U.S. now goes to executives and other highly-paid employees:

Executives and other highly compensated employees now receive more than one-third of all pay in the U.S., according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of Social Security Administration data — without counting billions of dollars more in pay that remains off federal radar screens that measure wages and salaries. Highly paid employees received nearly $2.1 trillion of the $6.4 trillion in total U.S. pay in 2007, the latest figures available. The compensation numbers don’t include incentive stock options, unexercised stock options, unvested restricted stock units and certain benefits.

Between 1979 and 2006, the inflation-adjusted after-tax income of the richest 1 percent of households increased by 256 percent, compared to 21 percent for families in the middle income quintile. Despite these numbers, Democratic leaders, “bowing to unease among lawmakers and governors in their own party,” are reconsidering the House Ways and Means committee’s proposal to implement a surtax on the richest one percent of Americans as a way of financing a portion of health care reform. The Wonk Room has more.

Congressional Dims are caving to the Pukes on the surtax because they, too, are all members of the top 1%, if not now, then when they go to work for K Street.

  2. singe_101 says:

Ah yes, the Great Man theory of leadership. And man, not many women making this much.

Somebody has to buy the mansions, right? What else would be there on that land?

If one is settling a new territory, or even planet… the first people needed… executives. Am I right? No builders or doctors or farmers!

  3. singe_101 says:

Oh and these poor ordinary folks cannot bear a tax increase, it would be the straw breaking the camel’s back.

Sure, as it says this isn’t about many other forms of income or old money. But those are just trickled down, or something.

  4. P.D. says:

And this is suprising? I find it depressing. And yet, we have Repugs and Demoncrats kowtowing to these assho*es while the average working stiff can’t afford health care or send his kids to college. We can thank Regan and other pols for dismantling eberything our Forefathers fought for. I think I’ll go to Canada. I hope if I get sick, I won’t die in the street.

  5. Jim Wolf359 says:

Time to pay the piper. The top 5% income earners got a free ride from 2001-2008 under Chimpy. Now, its time level the field a bit. And it’s not like these people work in areas that contribute directly to the welfare of the Country.
Most of these people deal in hedge funds, insurance, stock trading and the like. Essentially, they’re leeches who have helped suck the lifeblood out of our country. Pay up.

  6. Lefty Liberal says:

    Jim Wolf359 says:

The top 5% income earners got a free ride from 2001-2008 under Chimpy.

Actually they have had a free ride since Reagan, if not before.

    Definitely time to pay up

  7. Jim Wolf359 says:

I’d also add that they won’t be hurt by this surtax. Where I live, (Aspen, Colorado), a mansion on Red Mountain, a exclusive enclave just outside of town sold for $42,000,000 CASH. Kid you not. Straight cash transaction.

  8. P.D. says:

Jim@5, Try to explain that to the crazies who think all taxes are evil. For years the Repugs have said the mantra ‘Taxes are evil’ that average Americans believe it. Even the delusional righties will defend these rich assho*es right to ‘Capitalism’ Even if they are living out of a box.

  9. spencers mom says:

It’s time to return to the progressive tax rates that were in effect under Eisenhower, where the very top earners maxed out at 91%.

That was a post-war economy, after years of national sacrifice which followed years known as the Great Depression.

The richest of the rich got their “sell” orders bumped up to first in line after 9/11, and they were already selling everything at the end of last summer, just before the bubble burst.

Tax ‘em! Tax ‘em like crazy! Cut the taxes on the other 95%, watch the economy improve, watch real healthcare reform pass, and watch the GNOPers try to run on the “oh, no! taxes!” platform in 2012.

    PEACE

  10. hormiga brava chavez says:

It is time for the top 1% to pay their share of taxes. This is just ridiculous! I can not believe that Democrats have any sympathy for those who should pay more taxes. They’ve broken the middle class down – how much more do they think we can take?!

  11. Jim Wolf359 says:

I hear ya P.D. I have to listen to it enough here in Aspen. And yet these are the same people who have to work 2 or 3 jobs (if you can find even one), live in a shobox of an apartment with 3 to 4 others. And yet they consistently vote against themselves and complain when things don’t get better.

  12. Gregor Samsa says:

Yeah, well, that’s to be expected -I mean, them high executives having superior Ivy League education, being more intelligent, and overall better able to manage successful companies such as Enron, Countrywide Financial, GM, Washington Mutual, Worldcom, Adelphia, Bear Stearns, and countless others.

Thank goodness for the invisible hand, and the forces of the market! Without them, we’d be in horrible economic shape!

  13. okie dokie says:

This is why what’s left of the middle class is holding on by it’s fingernails.

  14. Gregor Samsa says:

I am sorry, troll. Did you just babble something?

    See, I don’t speak strawmanese

  15. Jim Wolf359 says:

    Wrong Proud Moron.
I’ve worked like hell to get where I am and I can say I’ve earned it. As a Progessive, I have always believed in the value of earning my own way and I think I speak for a lot of people on this board.

  16. Roket says:

I just thank the FSM that this is a Christian nation. Since greed is one of the seven deadly sins, think what shape this country would be in if it weren’t for the Christians, or something like that also too.

  17. P.D. says:

Proud, GO AWAY. Calling the average American lazy is stupid. My husband is a self-made man. He works construction and gets his hands dirty and he puts food on the table. We pay a fortune in healthcare and they don’t cover sh*t. Do you get your hands dirty? Do you work a physical job? I believe Proud should be banished. I have been a volunteer all my life, and people like you Proud make me sick. I have seen people without insurance, I have seen families lose a love one. And you know what? I will do it again. Because it is the moral, humanr thing to do.

  18. spencers mom says:

While we’re doing our tax reform wish list, let’s have Social Security and Medicare taxes kick back in after, oh say, the first $1 million, and make it apply to ALL compensation so the clever accountants don’t hide the compensation under the guise of bonuses or “expense” reimbursement. Again, it could be a progressive tax that kicks in at 1% for the second million, 2% up to $4 million, etc. with a cap at $50 million.

Here’s another fine idea – how about taxing churches on any end-of-year surpluses that exceed 2 years worth of actual operating expenses! Then the Mo’s won’t have the cash to go into other states and fund campaigns to deny the civil rights of others.

    PEACE

  27. spencers mom says:

NotJoeTheNotPlumber is a perfect example of GNOP hypocrisy. Himself a two-time welfare recipient, he now rails against government spending. And that was just the welfare part he admitted to. If he truly received welfare, he also received food stamps, Medicaid and, if he was working, child care assistance. Even after the welfare checks stopped, the other aid programs most likely continued.

As a NotPlumber, he would never have been allowed to own the NotPlumbing business he declared he was [not] just about to buy while insisting that Candidate Obama was going to raise his taxes on NotHis business.

Even if I could forgive McCain for all the smears from the campaign, he can never be forgiven for thrusting Palin and NotJoe into the national spotlight. Shit, it’s been nearly a year and not a day goes by when one of those idiots isn’t given a feature story somewhere.

The problem isn’t really with McCain on this. It is with the news agencies that keep putting them front and center. But that is what the corporate masters want. They want these types on the news so real issues can’t be discussed.

  35. ralph the wonder locust says:

Interesting. The “National Taxpayers Union” says that the top 1% are still put-upon by the tax man, eh?

Unfortunately for them, while the top 1% pays 39% of income taxes, it controls 42% of financial wealth and owns 54% of corporate wealth.

The next 19% owns 50.4% of financial wealth, leaving 7.5% of all financial wealth in the US econmomy to be distributed among the other 80% of the population.

    Those poor chaps.

  36. Lefty Liberal says:

    meaningless nonsense

Remember, there are three types of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics.

When you consider how much of the wealth in this country is controlled by the upper 20% of the population vs. the amount of wealth controlled by the bottom 80%, those at the top are not paying anywhere near what they should.

Ok Stamp let’s say you are barely in the highest tax bracket which start at $372,951 at 35% you get back $242,418.15.

Now if you were at the top of the bottom 50%, $31,987 at 15% you get back $27188.95.

Don’t know about you, but I’d rather get back 65% of $372,951 instead of 85% of $31,987.

  39. EugeneDebs says:

Good shot Ralph as usual. The thing is there is no QUESTION that the wealthy pay a much smaller percentage of their DISPOSABLE income in taxes than the middle class

I’ve always been pro-capitalist. I’ve always thought socialist ideas seemed well intentioned, but wrongheaded because they stymie competition.

But, I am beginning to understand that if capital becomes too concentrated in fewer hands, more and more people become alienated from the capitalist system. They are alienated because they have no realistic expectation to benefit from the system.

So, although a capitalist system does create competitive forces that spur economic activity, there does come a point, where those forces unchecked, yield diminishing returns for more and more of the population.

At some point, moderation of the burgeoning gaps in wealth, not only helps the have nots, but benefits those capitalists that have prospered, by reducing the potential for a total collapse of a system that benefits fewer and fewer people.

The rich pay less in taxes than any other first world nation, and they still manage to get away with this?

It’s not even the republicans this time, that’s the scary thing. It’s the DEMOCRATS who backed down on taxing the rich for this healthcare plan. Why? Oh yeah. Because they themselves are rich too.

Why do we tolerate this? I really want to know. Why?

If I had a million dollars, I’d be set for life. These people make SEVERAL million dollars EVERY SINGLE YEAR. And that number just keeps going up.

Can we all finally agree that while yes, it’s fun to look at these expensive homes and stuff, that no one really NEEDS that sort of extravagance? Please tell me I’m not alone here.

I want to live simply. Greenly. Economically. Frugally. Sustainably. These people don’t. It’s as simple as that. I think it’s high time to take back what’s ours. Our hard earned money goes into their pockets, via tax-funded bailouts or forked over via medical care, consumer goods, or house payments.

They don’t deserve it. It’s time to take it back. All of it. And watch these people suffer just as much as we all suffer. Watch them starve in the streets because they have to choose whether to make that mortgage payment or buy groceries.

Weiner Blasts the Critics of Health Reform; Ask the Energy and Commerce Committee to Vote YES on the HR 676 Amendment

Ask the Energy and Commerce Committee to vote YES on the HR 676 amendment

The silence in the House of Representatives around single-payer healthcare and H.R. 676 will end this Wednesday. Rep. Anthony Weiner, (D-NY09), who has already rankled Republicans and Blue Dogs with his no-nonsense statements before the House Energy and Commerce hearing on H.R. 3200, will move to amend the current bill. His proposal is essentially to replace H.R. 3200 with H.R. 676—single payer Medicare for All.

This exciting and potentially monumental move needs our support. We pushed Rep. Dennis Kucinich’s amendment to victory last Friday, and we can do it for Representative Weiner, too.

The full committee and its five subcommittees are spending the next three days debating the bill and performing their markups. This is the time to act, and Representative Weiner is making his move.

Call or fax the committee members and tell them you want them to support Representative Weiner’s proposal. Listen to his blunt analysis in Friday’s session of what real healthcare reform is made of, and you’ll get some good ideas of what to say when you call or fax. It’s a no-holds-barred, take-no-prisoners approach to the legislative process almost never heard on the House floor.

    aint capitalism great

we continue to blame people and fail to see the system

with communism man exploits man with capitalism it is the other way around

we cheered when communism failed not realizing capitalism’s failure was close at hand.

the lesson here be careful when you cheer others demise.

and some state that cosmic or spiritual laws do not exist.

america is a failing nation and much of that failure is due to a economic policy that russel nailed in this quote:

“Advocates of capitalism are very apt to appeal to the sacred principles of liberty which are embodied in one maxim: the fortunate must not be restrained in the exercise of tyranny over the unfortunate” Bertrand Russell.

instead we are told by our politicans and economists that this downturn is just a recession. pure genius on their part.

hey there is always hope. :-)

dont forget to pay those tax dollars wall street is waiting for it to dole out their bonuses. :-)

They don’t just own wealth, they own us.

  77. AaronQ of Maine says:

There are 3 types of people:
    1. People that know they are owned and sometimes fight against it (Democrats, 20% )
    2. People that just give up.(non-voters 61%)
    3. People that don’t know they are owned (republicans, 29%)

  78. AaronQ of Maine says:

There is no point is raising taxes if there is an proportional increase in poor spending decisions. I think Bush was right to leave taxes low because even with the money he DID spend he messed up. The government has enough money as it is, I think Obama has too much faith the government will work. I’ve never seen it work. I can’t think of anyone who has. I’m not trying to say all programs are bad, I’m just saying the government spends money like a kid in a candy store.

  79. AaronQ of Maine says:

“hH, I’m an Ivy league educated Executive. I might not be smart enough to save my failing company. But, I am smart enough to walk away from the flaming car wreck with my millions of dollars.”

  80. Perry logan says:

I see by the comments here that most of you have completely forgotten the Clinton administration.

That’s funny. It really wasn’t that long ago:

In 1982, the first full year for Reagan’s policies, the economy shrank by 2%, the worst performance since the Great Depression. Investment — the magic transmission belt through which all other Supply Side benefits were supposed to flow — actually declined as a percent of GDP over the 1980s. Worse, Reagan’s Supply Side policies created the biggest budget deficits in history. The numbers tell the story….

Bill Clinton reversed Reagan’s Supply Side policies, raising taxes on the wealthy and lowering them on the working and middle class. This Demand Side formula was fiercely resisted by Republican leaders in Congress who predicted a stock market crash and another Great Depression. Indeed, every single Republican member of Congress voted against it. It took a tie-breaking vote by Al Gore in the Senate to get the bill passed. What happened?

The economy produced the longest sustained expansion in U.S. history. It created more than 22 million new jobs, the highest level of job creation ever recorded. Unemployment fell to its lowest level in over 30 years. Inflation fell to 2.5% per year compared to the 4.7% average over the prior 12 years. And overall economic growth averaged 4.0% per year compared to 2.8% average growth over the 12 years of the Reagan/Bush administrations.

It wasn’t even close. The economy performed dramatically better in almost every way once Supply Side policies were replaced with Demand Side policies….

This is the real reason Bill Clinton was so relentlessly hounded while in office…. His big faux pas was that by paying down the Republican debts, he lowered interest rates, the basis of Republican earnings. In fact, real interest rates declined 40% while Clinton was in office. You can see why he simply had to go….

  82. WebCommoner says:

The upper class’ shady dealings when it comes to the accumulation of wealth over time stifles the lower classes’ ability to have a fair shot at economic opportunity. Wealth in this country is too often built off the backs of those less fortunate through lies, cheats, and deceit. Look at what the banks and insurance companies are doing to the middle and lower classes as we speak. Look at every crony fortunate enough to fit in George Bush’s pocket throughout his presidency. They’re all buddies, and that’s why I don’t feel bad about burdening the nation’s highest paid executives who receive a third of all income. Those among the richest 1% who wine about socialized distribution are just protecting its accumulation at the expense of the lower classes.

  84. nyer11A says:

1st reform – remove the FISA salary cap. 2nd reform – Then do something similar to help Medicare/Medicaid.

Then reform corporate taxes so that their deductions are limited & “income” is higher.

Or simpler, Go to Eisenhower income tax rates + #s 1&2 above

  85. Mr. Cobb says:

I love the idea that the top 1% will be taxed to help pay for healthcare for all but I doubt it will happen. There’s nothing fair in this world anymore.

It is time for the top 1% to pay their share of taxes. This is just ridiculous! I can not believe that Democrats have any sympathy for those who should pay more taxes. They’ve broken the middle class down – how much more do they think we can take?!
    July 21st, 2009 at 10:08 pm

Would it be worth knowing what percent of the total tax bill these top earners are already paying?

It has to be considerable because many of those on the low end of the scale don’t pay anything.

  87. tokin librul says:

Would it be worth knowing what percent of the total tax bill these top earners are already paying?

From each according to ability, to each according to need.

The more you profit from the system, the more you are required to support it.

  88. Mr. Cobb says:

It has to be considerable because many of those on the low end of the scale don’t pay anything.

You’re going to get actual class warfare now.

  89. Mr. Cobb says:

The truly rich will just try to find more loopholes to hide their income so I’m glad to see Obama going after that first.

  90. DallasNE says:

Overlay these charts with charts showing deregulation measures. It would be scary. What this really shows is the failure of capitalism to regulate itself. The obvious solution is to apply increased regulation on capital. For that to happen we need to start with public financing of federal elections. Only then can we begin to turn this slide around. The race to the bottom has been a huge failure and it has been going on for at least 40 years. Yes, Clinton signed the repeal of Glass-Stegall (sp), lest we forget. We last had real progressives in government in the 1960’s and LBJ threw it all away in Vietnam.

  91. Mr. Cobb says:

Income taxes pay mostly for things like both Iraq wars and Afghanistan, Imperialism, NAFTA, GAT, free trade agreements, interstate freeways, National Parks, FBI, CIA, a hot-shot standing military, etc. The middle class and poor pay sales taxes fund local roads, hospitals, schools, local parks, libraries, cops, city/county councils, fire fighting, etc.

I would think most of the worthwhile taxes are paid by the middle class and poor.

Why do we not pay them what they are WORTH,

  96. Mockingbird says:

Executives are merely self-important enough to matter more than everyone else!

    The lesson of “modern art”:
A thing is only worth what you get for it.

If no one wants to pay big money, its not worth anything.

If people pay big money for a Campbell Soup can, it must be thrice profound! Even when it makes fun of that very system.
    *********

Why, bloggers tell us so. The people who gain – blog “professionally.”
If there is personal recompense. A money exchange you can feel as it crosses your palm.

Why would anyone pay for the “we are all in this together” crowd; pay for such a message?

There is no direct paycheck for such activity.

That’s probably why progressive ideas & media have had problems with the bottom line. Progressive radio. Public television. Public Education. What can’t we afford NEXT?

No one pays to be NORMAL.
To enhance the bottom line status quo.
