Matthews To GOP Rep. Advancing ‘Birther’ Myth: ‘You Are Feeding The Wacko Wing Of Your Party’

Over the past several months, the right wing has been advancing the discredited myth that President Obama is not a natural-born U.S. citizen. These so-called “birthers” claim that Obama hasn’t produced his a valid birth certificate to prove that he is eligible to be president. (He has). CNN’s Lou Dobbs is the latest to traffic in this nonsense, despite the fact that his own guest-host debunked the “birther” claims on Dobbs’s show.

Today on MSNBC, host Chris Matthews interviewed Rep. John Campbell (R-CA), co-sponsor of a bill that would require candidates for president in the future to present a copy of his or her birth certificate “to establish that the candidate meets the qualifications” for president. “The proposal is not crazy,” Campbell said in defense of the measure. “Congressman, nice try,” Matthews replied. “What you’re doing is appeasing the nutcases…you’re verifying the paranoia out there,” he said. Matthews then held up a copy of Obama’s birth certificate and said, “That’s the way to deal with this, mail this birth certificate to the wacko wing of your party.”

Matthews asked Campbell seven times if he believes Obama is a natural born U.S. citizen, and after a series of dodges, Matthews said, “You are feeding the wacko wing of your party.” Campbell finally answered, “As far as I know, Yes.” “As far as you know? I’m showing you his birth certificate!” Matthews exclaimed:

MATTHEWS: It’s on the screen now, take a close look. It says “Barack Hussein Obama.” He was born August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, is that a state? Yes it was. His mother was caucasian, his father was African. What more do you want? He’s male. He was born, by the way at 7:20 P.M. in the island of Oahu. What more do you want? I mean, I’m serious, you say “as far as you know?” You are playing to the crazies.

“Was he born in this country?” Matthews asked again. “Yes, I believe so,” Campbell replied. “Ok, finally we’re making progress,” Matthews said. Watch it:

Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE) was barraged by birthers at a local town hall meeting in Delaware recently and was forced to inform the crowd — much to their dismay — that Obama is indeed a natural born citizen.

I give credit to Matthews for this — he was like a bull dog who wouldn’t let go of Campbell.
There are a couple of things that seem to have really pisssed off Matthews – the health care obstruction and the birthers.
He is in favor of health care reform and he thinks the birthers are nuts.

BTW, check out Ed Schultz who come son after Hardball — there is a guy who is really for the average Joe. He is not easily intimidated by repugs.

  12. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Is there “enabling legislation” that requires Representatives and Senators to produce birth certificates to show proof of age?

  13. pbeeg says:

    J have a question.
If Obama was born in Kenya, at what point do they allege that he and his mother made it to Hawaii?
Do they think she got on the plane (or series of planes) while he was still dripping? Or did she wait three months? Six?
If so, who filed the (bogus) newspaper birth announcement?
Are they saying that Barack Obama is a year older than he claims to be–or that his mom had fiendish accomplices in Hawaii who planted he info in the paper?

Since birth announcements are usually done directly from the hospital, the co-conspirator would probably have to be on the staff of the hospital.
And of vourse, if that’s true, then even the long form could have been faked!

    AIIIEEEEE!

  14. Jane E. Schneider says:

  16. Marie says:

I also think the underlying truth of the birthers is their racism. They obviously cannot accept a black president, (our own troll, proud among them) so they attempt to find a reason to de-legitimize him.
Proof has been submitted, proof has been verified by numerous and impartial, investigative sources, even local newspaper reports of his birth have been unearthed in Oahu.
But that isn’t enough for them because there is something more to the birthers’ continued argument — they refuse to acknowledge the true facts because that pulls the rug out from under them. They’d have to accept Obama as president.

  17. Intrepid says:

Hey birthers who insist that Obama is not a natural born US citizen, one of the whackos who appease whackos such as yourselves admitted he is a US born citizen. Play the video above and witness his ownage after Matthews held up his BIRTH CERTIFICATE.

Here… Apply for a copy of it, http://hawaii.gov/health/vital-records/pdf/birth.pdf, obtain it and mail this birth certificate to the whacko wing of your party. This is how you deal with it.

You are making this fallacious claim because of his skin color and you know it. It freightens you knowing you have an african american president which is the reason why you are spreading lies about where he was born and lying about the FACT he has submitted his birth certificate.

Face it losers…. You have been owned. Time for you to STFU and deal with it.

  18. benji85 says:

Not defending him; but common sense would say that, if the Constitution says you have to natural born, then there would be a policy already in place to prove that. Than again it is government and they aren’t exactly known for common sense.

  19. xero says:

prude says “Still waiting for Obama to produce that long form birth certificate.”

Wait ’til hell freezes over moran. If President Obama personally drove to all you idiots’ homes to show you the “long form” you’d screech “forgery”, if he produced a video of his mother squeezing him out, with Hawaii in the background, you’d find something wrong with that as well.

Its not the lack of proof, as there isn’t a lack of proof. Its that you, and the rest of the ‘birfers’, are too cowardly to admit that you hate President Obama because he’s cooler, smarter, and plays politics better, than your guys. And you’re all racists.

  24. Wayne A. Schneider says:

The “issue” that the MSM is “keeping alive” is not the question of whether or not Barack Obama was born in the United States. He was. End of story. The issue being kept alive is that there are people too blindly ignorant to accept the evidence, and some of them are serving in our Congress.

Please prove that Hawaii issues a “long form birth certificate”, because the government of that state doesn’t seem to think they do.

I was born in Ohio and up until 2006 the only birth certificate I had was from the hospital where I was delivered. It was insufficient for a passport and I had to request a certified copy from the county before I was able to qualify for a passport — and my birth certificate looks remarkably like the “short form” proof of live birth the Obama campaign offered as evidence, and the birth certificate that factcheck.org saw in Hawaii.

    ______________________________________________________________

This has been “explained” over and over and over again. The original long form birth certificate is kept in the Hawaii state archives. As they are for everyone born in Hawaii. It’s not “released” to anyone — not even the POTUS.

So what do they do when somebody wants proof of a Hawaii birth? They produce a certified copy of the information required for virtually anything anybody would need proof of birth for. Passports, employment, joining the military, registering to vote, etc. The archivists are also willing to swear in a signed statement that the long form exists. All of this has been done. At this point, there’s no reason to “release” the long form — the birthers would only claim it’s a forgery. Be honest — why would the long form convince you that Obama was born in Hawaii when the short form and sworn statements obviously do not? Sheesh — even the Governor of Hawaii (a Republican) has gone on record to say Obama’s documentation is legit.

I suppose President Obama could persuade Congress to pass a constitutional amendment federalizing all birth records in the U.S. and taking them away from the states — which would give him control of the archives and then he can wave a long form birth certificate around for everyone to see (and of course, the birthers will accuse him of using his office to rig the whole thing). And then once both houses of Congress pass such an amendment, it would need 38 states to ratify — most of which probably won’t want to yield that kind of control to the feds. And quite frankly, both the President and Congress have better things to do.

It’s not reasonable to ask you to provide that kind of documentation for any president who served before the invention of the photocopier. Just remember when the Frankenstein monster turned on his creator this issue may very well turn on the Republicans big time.

This non issue is demonstrating beyond any doubt that Republicans are dishonest and spoilers, ready to sabotage at any cost. This will be a Republican legacy, and they are earning it well.

    ___________________________________________________________

Got all three of you beat. But I’m only a year older than you. There is a lot to be said for age and experience — one of them being that we tend to recognize the same old political games over and over again, just with new props.

Even Barry Goldwater had to deal with people challenging his eligibility to be President back in 1964, because he was born in Arizona three years before it became a state. Fortunately, Goldwater’s political foes found more substantive issues upon which to criticize him.

I’ve always thought the “natural born” requirement to be President was silly — precisely because of people like the birthers. If one must be natural born to be President, why not make that requirement of Senators? Representatives? Cabinet members? Supreme Court Justices?

When Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected Governor of California, a number of giddy Republicans floated the idea of a constitutional amendment doing away with the “natural born citizen” requirement. Looking back, we probably should have taken them up on the idea, because they’d never go for it now.

I recognize there are people who will never accept a multi-racial man as President. Or maybe it’s that he’s a Democrat that’s the problem. If they couldn’t latch onto the issue of his birth, they’d probably circulate a rumor that he had a prison record that friends in high places got wiped off the books. And they’d challenge him to “prove” that was untrue.

The long form is an actual copy of the whole birth certificate. The short form is just a certification of birth without any information. Either one that is sealed by the appropriate authority is enough for legal identification. I live in Cook County, Illinois and they issue a short form unless you request the long form.

    Zooey says:
Let’s not call them “birthers,” let’s use the proper term.

    RACIST.

Racism is only a part of the problem. Obama is the complete opposite of Bush. Obama is black, intelligent, from an urban area, and he doesn’t wave the flag and thump the Bible as talking points. The”birthers” need cover for their racism and now they have a slogan to hide behind. The Republicans are not doing much to distance themselves from these fanatics. We are only six months into Obama’s term and these type of attacks are not going to get better.

  141. Zooey says:

I agree, pags2, but I truly think racism is the root of the problem.

If Hillary Clinton were president right now, she’d be catching flack for having thick ankles, wearing pantsuits, having a loud laugh, and being a b!tch (aka strong woman), but no one would be demanding to see her birth certificate.

Yes, these attacks will not get better or go away — because that would take a certain level of self-awareness and self-assessment that “birther”-types simply do not possess.

It is possible for Obama to be a citizen of two countries by reason of his birth. His citizenship in the US is confirmed by reason of his mother or because he was born on American soil. If Kenya has similar citizenship laws, Obama may be citizen of Kenya by reason of his father. Dual citizenship is common and there are many countries, particularly European, that allow it.

Racism may play a part in this for many of the reactionaries, but I think it’s mostly an attempt to convince people that Obama is not a “real” American.

All this when anyone with a brain (sorry anal-retentive Obama-lovers – that LEAVES YOU OUT!) knows that Obama’s Hippy Mother, Stanley Ann Dunham went to Kenya to see Obama Sr.’s amily before the birth – as she only ‘hooked up’ with a black man to annoy her father (her own words) – but when Obama family members rejected her crazy a55 – she tried to board a Pan Am flight back to the U.S. – but was turned away as too pregnant for overseas flying – and delivered Obama Jr. at the Coast Provincial hospital in Mombasa, Kenya & then quickly flew back to her parents in Hawaii who merely applied for a ‘Certificate of Live Birth’ – WITHOUT EVER NAMING which hospital (in Kenya) delivered Obama Jr. – which you Obama dweebs seem incapable of distinguishing from an actual ‘Birth Certificate’ !!!

    Prove your claim or begone.

TW: you’re completely full of shite. Go to this link…

    http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/born_in_the_usa.html

And tell me why on EARTH the director of Hawaii’s Department of Health Chiyome Fukino and the registrar of vital statistics, Alvin Onaka would lie about such a thing?

Just give me one good reason, or like gully foyle said, STFU and get lost.

  164. muy rosada says:

Uh, Mary Sue , isn’t there some law that states one can only take $10,000 out of the US?

If they take out more than that they can be arrested, but then it’s probably all stashed in an overseas account anyway.

  165. Gregor Samsa says:

    wow…

someone left open the front door of the asylum…

(yeah, using bold makes everything you type become true, dontcha know)

    TruthSquad,
As ye sow so shall ye reap.

God has some really nasty things to say about liars. Time to get out your Bible and read it.

  167. UCSBKitty says:

Wow, truthsquad, you managed to bash TEH GAYS and TEH MUSLIMS all in one post…How proud you must be, such a mental giant like yourself showing your utter brilliance to us mental midgets. Do you earn more points on Troll Central the more hated groups you bash in a single post?

I’m sure since you are the mental giant, an Einstein among us George W. Bushes, you are willing to provide links to your accusations.

  168. UCSBKitty says:

You make a lot of accusations, my dear Truthsquad. Oh honey, you should provide some links to back up your claims. When did Obama’s mom say she married Barack Obama Sr. to piss off her father? For such a brilliant mind, you automatically assume that we will all be blown away by your peerless mind that we’ll believe you. That might work on the GOP sheep base but not on us…
