Glenn Beck likes to bring his gun to the movies.

This afternoon, the Senate defeated an amendment sponsored by Sen. John Thune (R-SD) that would have allowed individuals with concealed carry gun permits to carry firearms into another state. Later on Fox News, Glenn Beck interviewed Thune to discuss the measure. “We’re going to disagree,” Beck warned Thune, but later, he made sure to present his gun-totin’ bona fides. “I’m a gun owner, and I’m a member of the NRA, and I am a concealed weapons permit holder. So, I mean, I love guns!” Beck boasted. He then aired a clip of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg criticizing concealed carry laws. “They’ll be able to go to the movies with guns and there will be nothing that our police officers can do about it,” Bloomberg complained. Beck then mocked Bloomberg’s concern:

BECK: I went to the movie this weekend with a gun. And surprise, surprise, I didn’t kill anybody!

That twerp shouldn’t be boasting about carrying a gun, it might give a right minded person an idea…what a schlub

  4. oldgranny says:

Gee, did the theater have a sign that said: no concealed weapons allowed?

  5. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

Who in their right mind would liscence Beck to carry a weapon? This guy is insane and should not be allowed to even own a gun, much less conceal and carry one.

Beck is surprised he didn’t kill anybody because he really wanted to.

Why would anyone feel the need to carry a loaded weapon into a theater ?

Especially an absolute MORON like Glenn Beck ; what if the gun accidently discharged ?

There is a very real possibility of an absolute tragedy occurring that was easily preventable ………

  14. Rob says:

@Cicero: Would you want to sit in a movie theater with Glen Beck holding a gun, just to prove that the Bill of Rights is absolute?

I bet I could take the gun off this bi-polar, alcoholic drama queen in three moves in a dark theater.

  47. pete says:

Leaving aside the fact that Becky’s mental health issues should bar him from gun ownership; if the theater has a sign that says “Guns are not allowed on this premises”, Becky broke the law. But I guess it’s O.K. to break the law while the Dems are in control.

  48. angels81 says:

  50. gummble-bee-itch says:

All snarking about Beck aside, it wasn’t a particularly brilliant comment by Mayor Bloomberg. I mean, seriously, that’s the worst case scenario he could come up with in regard to loose carry requirements in other states?

He should have stuck with the remark he made to TP:

This legislation is impractical for communities and police departments across this country and tramples on states rights. Under current law in most states, if you have certain misdemeanor convictions, are an alcohol abuser, or haven’t completed a gun safety training program, you cannot carry a concealed weapon. This bill would effectively erase those rules. We can’t destroy the common sense safeguards states across the country have put in place.

    Movies? Really?

(That having been said, I actually opposed the Thune amendment. There is already a well established reciprocity system among the various states that have concealed carry laws. A federal law mandating reciprocity would be a violation of the 10th amendmnet, in my opinion.)

Relevance? Especially since Cho did not even have a concealed carry permit?

The problem here was (largely) a failing of the federal and state laws concerning the instant check. This was swiftly closed to much fanfare and with the support of both the Brady Campaign and the NRA.

Still, the fact remains that concealed carry permit holders, as a group, are less likely to commit crimes than the population as a whole. You might not like this fact, but that’s your problem.

As a civilized citizen of a civilized country I’ve never felt the need to carry a weapon among my fellow citizens. I own guns but only carry them when I feel a need to eat a wild critter that can outrun me.

I do have some questions though.

Don’t you think that it would be a good idea to only sell weapons and ammo to those who qualify for a conceal/carry permit or some national standard? Should there not be a national standard and database to track those ineligible for gun ownership? Do you think that anyone who can’t meet the standard of your conceal/carry permit should be allowed to purchase deadly weapons?

Just ask Cheney’s hunting partner if accidents happen.

  84. fiduciaryatlarge says:

  85. pete says:

    tbrantz says:
…accidents happen. Just ask Cheney’s hunting partner if accidents happen.

I must quibble. The unintentional discharge of a weapon is more than an accident. It is, or should be, an act of criminal negligence.

And I’m not greatly concerned with a concealed weapon discharging and hurting someone. It’s very hard to discharge a modern weapon without intentionally firing it, Plaxico Buriss notwithstanding.

I am far more concerned with a nut like Becky having a GET OFF MY PHONE moment and blowing some poor innocent away because he had the gun handy. Also, since it’s damned uncomfortable to carry a concealed weapon, I’m concerned about these weapons being left in desks, cars, and other unsecured places.

Largely because I’m a gun owner, I strongly believe that all guns should be under lock and key unless there’s an intent to use them.

  86. libertarianism says:

  87. Jess Wonderin says:

When I was in the army, our Drill Sargent made it QUITE clear which was our “gun” and which was our “weapon” . . . I have no problem with Becky fondling his “gun” in the back row of some peepshow . . . just leave his weapon at home, securely locked away.

  88. Daniels says:

“BECK: I went to the movie this weekend with a gun. And surprise, surprise, I didn’t kill anybody!”

Just think, if someone in that theater would have jumped up at Beck and said, “I’m an Obama supporter”. We could have seen Beck go off in handcuffs and looking at life in prison….. Pity….

I would have to guess that most of the gun nuts or in hillbilly land. Where I live. The thing is there are not many armed robberies or anything with a gun around here. When something like that happens, everyone knows about it and who was involved.

One of my friends that is a republican has a concealed weapons permit. He claims that he got the permit for protection. Yet, there is hardly any crime around here. When there is a crime you can almost bet it’s a school kid in toruble for being out past curfew…..

I understand the 2nd Amendment gives the right to bear arms. It gives the hillbillies a sense of security. I guess they think that they could fight the biggest and most advanced army if the government became oppressive. Maybe what happens in the movies can happen in real life. You know at the end of, “Saving Private Ryan”, Tom Hanks is shotting the tanks with a handgun and the tank blows up. “But it looked so real PA.”

  89. Daniels says:

Having the highest amount of murders says something about our current laws on guns.

  90. Stagoculus says:

first of all the U.S does not have the highest rate of myrder. several eastern european countries have a much much higher rate of murder. secondly there are far more contributing factors in the murder rate than gun ownership. Drug trafficking/gang violence account for a vast majority of our violence and murder. plus guns are not the only weapons used. and I will throw in the fact of a lax justice system for violent criminals. Same guys keep killing over and over.

The 2nd Amendment is about the ability of states to have armed militias. It’s original intent was as a check on the unfettered power of the federal government.

Never intended to guarantee a right to an assault rifle, unless said weapon was needed in the context of a militia.

  93. Zooey says:

Beck is so unstable, I’d be more worried about being witness to Beck shooting himself in the mouth, than seeing him shoot someone else.

  94. MapleStreet says:

Was it some kind of slip when Beck said “I’m a gun owner, and I’m a member of the NRA, and I am a concealed weapons permit holder. So, I mean, I love guns!”

That is, he’s admitting that it isn’t about safety. Rather it is about an insane obsession with carrying a gun – which opens the door to all sorts of deeper psychological meanings.

  95. Keith says:

    http://www.nytimes.com/1990/12/31/nyregion/youth-charged-in-shootout-at-godfather-movie-on-li.html

“He said the shooting at the theater started after seven to 10 youths arrived late and chatted with one another throughout the show in the Sunrise Cinema complex in Valley Stream, L.I.

“The people were annoyed by the noise created,” Sergeant Cocks said.

The teen-age group soon got into a shouting match with another group of about six youths, he said. Detective Cocks said at least 25 shots were fired. The rest of the audience ducked under their seats in the darkened theater as the movie kept on rolling.”

    http://www.nytimes.com/1993/10/17/nyregion/theater-shooting-raises-security-concerns.html

The police said the shootout in the Metropolitan began at 10:40 P.M. Friday, during the last screening of “Judgment Night,” an action movie about urban violence that stars Emilio Estevez. The gunfight, they said, erupted after a fist fight broke out at the front of the theater between 19-year-old Lakeem Sules and an unidentified person. Bystanders Injured

Mr. Sules, of 446 Kingston Avenue in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn, was shot to death, and two other men and a woman sitting in the theater were injured by the gunfire. The person who had scuffled with Mr. Sules has not been found and the police do not know if that person fired the shots.

  96. lucius13 says:

If Glen Beck carries a gun, it’s probably because of the number of people he has offended. I wonder what kind of places he and Bill O’Reilly usually habg out at? Remember Bill O’s comments about the resaturant Harlem?

  97. pete says:

Valid points, Stagoculus. But try looking at things this way.

The U.S. has a higher rate of mass murder by firearm than any other civilized nation. Considering that those countries with more restrictive firearm ownership laws have fewer incidents of mass murder by firearm, is it not realistic to make a correlation?

There’s a vast area between unregulated firearm purchase and outright bans. I’m not a big fan of bans and don’t see a whole lot of support for them. On the other hand, I think that the only sane approach is to establish a national standard and database so that convicted criminals and mental patients, like Becky, can’t pack heat on our streets and public squares.

  98. dhov says:

Way to go Glenn. I applaud you! I too have a conceal/carry permit and I too have my handgun with me at the theater.
Just because I’m at the theater doesn’t mean that someone won’t come in and begin hurting me and my friends or loved ones with me. And it doesn’t mean that some criminal with no regard for human life won’t come in and just start harming or killing people. Too many times people are killed by some idiot all drugged up or psychotic, or any number of other reasons and if someone with the right training, carrying their firearm beacause they have the legal right to were there, lives could have been saved and the situation turned around where the actual bad guy paid the price. I have a permit and I will excersize my right to protect myself if unfortunately a situation like that arises. Far too many people seem to feel that it’s better to take the guns away from the law abiding citizen, which unfortunately leaves the criminals with the upper hand. I know this will get alot of negative response based on what I’ve read here and based on what seems to be alot of anti-gun people (or maybe it’s just anti Beck people) :) One thing is for sure. I know I’m not paranoid or any other comment some will want to use against me, but I do know that if anyone ever attacks me or my family with a gun or any other instrument (if I’m there with them at the time) I will at least have a fighting chance to defend ourselves with a firearm if the situation warrants it, and for that I can thank our second ammendment.

I am also *surprised, surprised* the Baboon didn’t shoot the telephone the other day.

  100. Keith says:

FBI data shows that if you have a gun, it is far more likely to hurt one of your family than to protect your family. Domestic violence, accidents, and suicide. Sorry, but that is reality—not Charles Bronson or Jodie Foster shooting the bad guys. That is fiction.

Hey, we’re better than Bulgaria! Hip hip hooray!!!!!!!!!

  101. Zooey says:

Paranoid people always “know” they’re not paranoid.

  102. Keith says:

    I know I’m not paranoid. :-)

    Beck is looney tunes.

Don’t underestimate him, Keith — Beck is batshit insane!

  105. Keith says:

    Stagoculus,

In order for you to make any sense, all other developed countries would have to be free of gangs and drugs. They are not. You would be surprized if you ever got out. Our justice system is lax? Compared to Saudi Arabia, maybe—not any other developed country.

Zooey, I never had too many psych classes, but I thought looney tunes was on the level of batshit insane. :)

    Hey, I can say “batshit”!

“Looney tunes” is a bit more benign than batshit insane. It’s all very technical. ;)

    Keith,

    Wouldn’t your alter-ego be htieK? :D

No, but I’m acquainted with Mr Hyde. I like to take him to the movies.

  117. Robt says:

Gee, Kind of makes one wonder if Glenn totes his pop gun at work.

You think FOX would mind if Beck packs his piece on company property? Doesn’t Glenn feel he has the right to pack his piece (concealed) while he works at FOX. After all FOX does employ many unsavory types?

And then there is packing your piece at funerals. Now that is the rage!

Try carrying your concealed weapon to the tanning salon while you tan.

Of course there is Beck’s constitutional right to carry a concealed weapon on any airline(s) he flys.

Oh, Beck should try to use his constitutional right to concealed carry when he visits the CIA, FBI, White House, or even the local police Dept. I’m sure they all will accomedate Beck and his concealed piece.

I just don’t think Belvue mental hospital will allow Beck his carry rights once admitted.

  118. Zooey says:

Ahhhhh, it’s so nice to hang out here with the basically normal people.

The freaks are hanging out on the abortion thread. Of course, I was there for a while, so I may qualify as a freak. :-D

They told me it was a matter of being drawn down on first.

  128. dbadass says:

I have a presentation to give in 6 hours so I am going sans butter. I wonder if I should take a hand gun with me to my meeting. You never know when some disgruntled curriculum developer might put myself and my loved ones at risk I suppose…

  129. Zooey says:

Gotta keep those meetings moving at a decent pace, db. Just show ‘em your rocket launcher.

  130. Keith says:

  135. Zooey says:

  136. Zooey says:

    Another euphemism, Keith? ;)

dhov sez: but I do know that if anyone ever attacks me or my family with a gun or any other instrument (if I’m there with them at the time) I will at least have a fighting chance to defend ourselves

Who the hell do you think you are–Wyatt Earp? This is not the OK Corral–and besides, you would probably take out several innocent bystanders in the process. Leave the law enforcement to the police…that’s what they’re for. Otherwise, it would just be a shoot-’em-up free-for-all. It’s 2009, not the first days of the Wild West, Mr. Trigger-Happy.

  146. Perry logan says:

Here’s something gun proponents are sure to ignore.

Recent historical research indicates that the Second Amendment was passed, not to preserve our freedom, but to help the Southern states keep control over their slaves.

This means gun proponents have it 180 degrees wrong. The Second Amendment represents slavery, not freedom:

Second Amendment Rooted in Southern States’ Control of Slavery, Academic Experts Say

Professor Bogus’ article demonstrates that, during debate over the new Constitution, Southern states feared the proposed federal government would use its new powers to disarm their state militia, rendering the states defenseless against a slave rebellion. Guarding against such an insurrection was a core function of the militia. As the idea of outlawing slavery gained support in the North, Southerners worried that undermining the militia might be a back-door way to achieve this goal.

Scholars who endorse this new thesis include Pulitzer Prize winning historian Garry Wills, who agrees that James Madison was responding to this fear when he wrote the Second Amendment. “Carl Bogus gives a powerful answer to the problem of the Second Amendment,” Wills states. “Madison was reassuring the states that had other uses for their well-regulated militias, including the internal policing of slave populations.”

In his 99-page article, Professor Bogus reviews wide-ranging evidence–including an analysis of Madison’s original language and an understanding of how he and other founders drew on England’s Declaration of Rights. Madison’s concern, Professor Bogus concludes, was not hunting, self-defense, national defense, or resistance to governmental tyranny, but slave control.

    http://www.vpc.org/press/9805bog.htm

This helps explain why gun proponents from Glen Beck to StormFront always use the same arguments–and are almost always white guys. ;)

Why do some guys feel they need to carry a gun (and brag about it!)? Hmmm…probably for the same reason they need to get a high-horsepower car. It’s all to make up for the lack of something else.

  151. Intrepid says:

Hey Beck. The next time you carry a gun into a movie theatre, conveniently place said gun to your tempo and conveniently kill yourself with it.

  152. LizCoro says:

WHY does this lunatic qualify for a concealment permit?

Beck’s mother and brother committed suicide which would lead one to believe there is MENTAL ILLNESS in Beck’s immediate family . .

I’d like to see his NYS Application for Weapon Concealment Permit . .

  153. SlappyBastinado says:

Hmmmmm whether to be the shooter or the shootee…THAT is the question!

  154. SkiBird says:

In Utah proud gun owners are shooting it out in the street at midnight, as they vie to see who is the real neighborhood protector. Will the guy who was trying to protect his daughter end up getting charged because he didn’t have a conceal permit, but the other guy did? Read the story to see how crazy it is getting. href=”http://www.sltrib.com/ci_12890747?source=most_viewed”>

  155. mikeinwaco says:

I’ve noticed that almost all the cable news “infotainment” personalities including Beck, O’Reilley, Matthews, Olberman, Schultz, Hannity, et al, all seem to have one thing in common: they all seem juvenile and even childish at times. Although Beck is the worst, mocking, temper tantrums, name-calling, intolerance, rudeness with guests (Matthews is one of the worst about interrupting and talking over them), quoting out of context, gushing over guests (again, Matthews is terrible about this, too), and even making things up are characteristics of most of them. Even though I include MSNBC people in the list, at least their excesses seem to be more fact-based than the constant barrage of heavily conservative misinformation on Fox. Beck needs a leash and a muzzle.

  156. SkiBird says:

  157. bsober says:

Well come on Think Progress, investigate to see if this blowhard even has a carry permit or even owns a gun. Las Vegas odds say 5-1 against.

    glogrrl says:
Who the hell do you think you are–Wyatt Earp?

Actually, Wyatt Earp as lawman of Dodge City, Kansas, used to enforce the town ordinance prohibiting firearms.

dbadass and Zooey got voted down for saying goodnite? Doesn’t make any sense. But then, trolls never do.

  159. rosebud2461 says:

You never know who has a gun that is why it is a concealed weapon. I never leave home without mine. I am lucky enough to live in Florida where you have the right to stand your ground and protect yourself and you family. I say good for Glenn.

  160. mcjj says:

I think it is so funny how that man behind the podium actually believes that CROOKS WILL TRY TO REGISTER FOR GUNS! Theives do not register for guns, law abiding citizens register for guns! It is astonishing how people believe that it is the law abiding citizen if American exercizing their 2nd ammendment right to guns is the radical who is going to walk into a holocost museum and shoot! (BTW – that man was a LEFT WING RADICAL who hates FOX news, hates the bible, hates christians)! I also think it is laughable how people who don’t even listen to glenn beck would make such hatefull comments, but I guess you “sheeple” only follow your great shephard Obama as he too likes to call people STUPID without knowing the facts!

  161. Komenscentz says:

IT’S REASSURING TO SEE THAT MOST OF YOU DEEP THINKERS ARE ABLE TO REMAIN RAZOR SHARP AND PICK RIGHT UP ON THE POINT OF THE PIECE THAT WAS BEING DONE. CONGRATS. HOW MANY OF YOU WERE WRITING YOUR NAMES IN THE SNOW AS YOU WERE PEEING WHILE WATCHING TV AS WELL? IMPRESSIVE. AFTER GETTING BLINDSIDED, WHICH ONE WILL BE THE FIRST TO SAY, “THEY CANT DO THAT TO US….WE’RE AMERICANS!” WELL, MAYBE EXTINCTION ISN’T SUCH A BAD IDEA AFTERALL- GOOD LUCK BEDWETTERS
