Peters Continues Attack On Captured U.S. Soldier: He’s A Liar And ‘A Deserter’ Who ‘Shamed His Unit’

Late last week, media outlets reported that Taliban forces had captured U.S. Army soldier Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl in Afghanistan. While the circumstances of his capture are not entirely known, Bergdahl said in a video released by his captors that he lagged behind a patrol, while other reports say he walked off a base with Afghan soldiers. In an appearance on Fox News earlier this week, retired Army Lt. Col. Ralph Peters suggested that the Taliban should kill Bergdahl because he is an “apparent deserter.”

Last night on Fox, Peters walked back slightly from that comment (“I do hope for his family’s sake this guy comes back safely,” he said) but he continued to attack the missing U.S. soldier. “I asked a very senior military leader for a yes or no answer. Is PFC Bergdahl a deserter? The answer was yes,” Peters said, calling Bergdahl a liar. He and O’Reilly then repeatedly attacked Bergdahl’s mental capacity:

O’REILLY: He leaves his weapon and he goes out someplace. Number one that tells me that he is crazy, Colonel, that he is a nut. Nobody does that.

PETERS: He may be mentally disturbed. [...]

O’REILLY: It’s got to be I’m totally out of my mind. And that’s what I think this guy is. I think he is crazy.

Peters’ main contention, however, seems to be that Bergdahl has received media attention, while fallen soldiers do not. “I was angry when this broke because I felt the media were glorifying a guy who abandoned his buddies in combat,” he said, adding that “he shamed his unit” and “he lied for the enemy’s benefit.” Watch it:

Appalled at Peters’ original comment, CNN’s Rick Sanchez reported yesterday that Bergdahl is not a deserter. “Is the military saying that he’s a deserter in any way? We have checked. No, not at all,” Sanchez said.

NBC Pentagon correspondent Jim Miklaszewski also reported yesterday that “senior Pentagon and military officials have ruled that out entirely, they say there is no evidence that he is a deserter.” Miklaszewski added that “they also point out that remarks like that are not the least bit helpful and in fact could endanger Pfc Bergdahl.”

Update Rep. John Boccieri (D-OH) and 22 other members of Congress wrote to Fox News chief executive Roger Ailes demanding "an apology to PFC Bergdahl's family and to the thousands of soldiers who put their lives on the line for our country. As a member of the military family, Mr. Peters should measure his remarks and remember that the United States will never abandon one of its own."

  5. Virtual Pebble says:

This Peters clown needs to STFU. His attitude isn’t helping anyone.

From the reports, it just sounds like Bergdahl did something really stupid. Since it’s a war zone, it might not be too much of a stretch to make some sort of claim of desertion or abandonment of duty post or some such thing, but it certainly isn’t a fact; not demonstrably proven as of the moment.

  6. AIO says:

“He may be mentally disturbed”. Who? Peters?

  7. Lefty Liberal says:

Why would any a$$hole neocon care if it would endanger a lowly Pfc? “we have to energize our base”

Can you imagine if this were Keith Olbermann and some liberal talking about a captured U.S. service person, or citizen, currently in the hands of the Taliban?

But I guess it’s okay when it’s Bildo and his raving minions.

Where the fcuk is the FCC? Where’s the Pentagon, and why aren’t they denouncing these wingnutters?

  11. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

Why is the neocon, Rupert Murdoch @ss-licking retired Lt. Col. Ralph Peters such a dooshbag? Oh, nevermind I guess I just answered my own question. Carry on with the troop bashing sir. I’m sure Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl’s family finds comfort in your words. I suppose if you are a retired Lt. Col. who NEVER saw combat or was never put under the daily stress that this Private has seen and have done nothing but carry neocon water for a decade it gives you a keen insight into this abducted soldiers mind. Military expert my @ss, this turd is just another neocon propagandist who found a way to turn a quick buck with the Murdoch media empire.

They just can’t handle veterans or those on active duty who might actually call them out or have different opinions. They’ll even get mad at the wounded, no homeless vets are in ____ City, etc.

I would say No True Scotsman defense but O’Reilly hasn’t done anything.

This is beyond belief, the “Support the Troops” crowd is openly calling for a U.S. Soldier’s death. This is what counts as “news” in this country now? A former Lt.Col goes on TV and calls a POW a liar, gee I wonder what he was saying about Jessica Lynch.

I am so glad that I never had to serve under this particular idiot, even though alot of his peers are just as stupid. I’m with my Uncle Ho on this one, I too am a very pissed off veteran right now, stay away from me.

I don’t care if he deserted, wandered away, is mentally disturbed, or was simply captured. HE’S AN AMERICAN SOLDIER!! If you don’t accept that fact alone as a reason to support his family, pray and work for his safe return, and to insure whatever he treatment he needs when he does return then you have no business ever claiming the “patriotic” label.

Let this be a clear warning to all those serving in the military. You can beat and torture enemy combatants and have proof of it and you’ll be forgiven. But god forbid you leave base to take a piss at your own leisure and get captured. Only then will you be a deserter and an idiot.

So the breakdown is as such:

    A. Follow orders to break Geneva convention is legit and supportable by your superiors.

    B. Have a mind of your own for a moment and find yourself in a predicament is means to call you a traitor, idiot, and deserter.

  27. Marie says:

OMG, Peters is smearing this young soldier without even knowing the facts.
    This is really outrageous.

Is it possible that this is the beginning of a campaign to belittle this soldier so that if he meets with personal harm in any way, it can be said that our torture practices in the past don’t count in this case because this guy was wrong?

Just when I think I have see how low repugs will stoop, they surprise me and go even lower — this Peters guy is lower than a worm. Bill-o is simply a turd with a big head.

Even if he did walk off base I don’t think you could call it desertion. I mean, where would he go in the middle of Afghanistan? Whatever he did within the Army/same day of being in the Army is important to know and address.

  48. RUCeriousMaggot! says:

skeeter, you are correct: from the US Army Code of Conduct…
    5. When questioned, should I become a prisoner of war, I am required to give name, rank, service number, and date of birth. I will evade answering further questions to the utmost of my ability. I will make no oral or written statements disloyal to my country and its allies or harmful to their cause…

Nevertheless, I am not going to condemn a soldier for not being able to live up to this responsibility. I’ve never been captured and tortured.

This is actually a subtle piece of work by the Reichwhiners. By labeling him as a “deserter” and “nuts” they are seeking to devalue Pfc. Bergdahl. As a, somehow, less than full American they can then divorce his case from the abuse of prisoners by American forces.

Then there’s the extra little jab from Bill0 that makes the presumption that those who are “nuts” aren’t worthy of our sympathy and concern.

In a 2009 article for The Journal of International Security Affairs titled “Wishful Thinking and Indecisive Wars” Peters’ advocates the ruthless use of United States military power, declaring “If you cannot win clean, win dirty.” Peters’ also raises the controversial possibility of directing the United States military to attack journalists. Peters writes, “Although it seems unthinkable now, future wars may require censorship, news blackouts and, ultimately, military attacks on the partisan media.”

This young man has not been charged with any wrongdoing. He may have been kidnapped. He may have been confronted with a threat to his unit. He may have fallen in love with a local who he believed was under threat. He may, in fact, be ill and not responsible for his actions.

The only proper position for the U.S. government, military, and media is that he is a U.S. soldier in the hands of our enemies and every resource we have should be mobilized to ensure his safe return.

here’s an instructive blip from wiki

In February 2009 Peters called for U.S. troops to be pulled out of Afghanistan, writing, “we’ve mired ourselves by attempting to modernize a society that doesn’t want to be — and cannot be — transformed.” He continued, “We needed to smash our enemies and leave. Had it proved necessary, we could have returned later for another punitive mission. Instead, we fell into the great American fallacy of believing ourselves responsible for helping those who’ve harmed us.”[19]

So he’s using this to bolster his argument that we shouldn’t be there, cause see what can happen?
He’s shamelessly using this soldier’s predicament to sell his books.

My labels are just fine, thank you.

Ralph Peters is a coward because he’s trashing a fellow service member without a single fact to back up anything he’s saying.

Peters acknowledges that he knows no details about the Bergdahl case, and then proceeds to call him a deserter, a liar, and crazy.

40,000 US Troops Have Deserted Since 2000
by: | Visit article original @

Thousands of Troops Say They Won’t Fight
    By Ana Radelat
    Gannett News Service

    Saturday 05 August 2006

Since 2000, about 40,000 troops from all branches of the military have deserted, the Pentagon says. More than half served in the Army.

Those who help war resisters say desertion is more prevalent than the military has admitted.

“They lied in Vietnam with the amount of opposition to the war and they’re lying now,” said Eric Seitz, an attorney who represents Army Lt. Ehren Watada, the first commissioned officer to refuse deployment to the war in Iraq.

The last time the US military executed a deserter was World War II. But hundreds face court-martials and imprisonment every year.

A 2002 Army report says desertion is fairly constant but tends to worsen during wartime, when there’s an increased need for troops and enlistment standards are more lax.

    in part
    http://www.truthout.org/article/40000-us-troops-have-deserted-since-2000

Now, add three more years of it……

IF, the private deserted, he is certainly NOT ALONE, though most desert stateside, not “in country”.

Still, that is a huge “IF” and considering the immense number of our own troops deserting, one has to ask if they know something that most Americans don’t seem to understand….eh? (Note also that only 5% of Americans have ever served in the military.)

I find it amazing how the righties denigrated Murtha and others for talking about the mass executions in Haditha, and complained that anyone daring to question the “mission” was anti-American, yet now that a dem is potus, all at once, they are denigrating our troops and their commander at will. The are simply hypocrites that base all on POLITICS, not honor and not country.

Judge not, or at least be willing to put your own ass on the line if you choose to judge ANY of our troops, for any reason.

Honor the warriors, not the war

oh yeah, Peters is a REMF!

  95. muy rosada says:

Since I’m spared Fox news, please tell me who are the sponsers for this ridiculous program.
It would do more good to complain to the sponsers than Ailes.

  97. nanlichi says:

If Peters would say those defamatory things to Bergdahl’s face he would get his punk ass kicked. If he said that crap to the 75% of Americans who have some sense of decency he would be looking for his teeth. But he won’t, he will spew his hateful vile comments from the safety of Faux News. Thus he is a coward.

In addition to being a hateful, ugly, nasty, vile POS. And those labels fit.

And Skeeter, how the hell do you know so much about the situation from the tiny slice you have seen? Are you channeling Madam Cleo? Quick to judge, quick to condemn from the few pieces you have been spoonfed from Faux. It’s sure is a simple world for you black/white thinkers isn’t it?

    RU,
I don’t doubt that at all. I just expect more from our troops.
Is that a reasonable expectation? Maybe not. But we need to expect the best.

    July 22nd, 2009 at 2:30 pm

How can you expect the BEST out of several hundred thousand different individuals , when the predicament and situation(s) they are placed in is the direct fault of the biggest moron to ever hold the highest elected office in the land ?

  100. Skeeter1 says:

    Zooey,
Sure you can think for yourself, but you still might want to take a look at his thoughts on the topic. His comments on the topic apparently so enraged the Bush team that they got his old network to cancel his show. That’s a good enough endorsement for me.

  101. Uncle Ho says:

    Skeeter1:
Why don’t you just fess up?
That you are just another cowardly chickenhawk member of the 101st keyboard brigade who never wore our country’s uniform.

If you were a veteran, you’d know better that to spew out the shit that you are doing.

  102. RUCeriousMaggot! says:

Skeeter1 says: I just expect more from our troops.
Is that a reasonable expectation? Maybe not. But we need to expect the best.
Based on my experience, no it’s not a reasonable expectation.
It’s a model that served us well when we had rules and boundaries that we and our enemies followed.
Since that’s not the case anymore, I don’t find it reasonable.

  103. DRxJ says:

Hey Skeeter Peters, where were your concerns and critiques when this captured soldier spoke out against the United States?

Oh, that’s right. It was during a Republican president. A WHITE Republican president!

And another thing, Uncle Ho brings a valid point. And you pi$$ing your pants over just words informs us all how easily you would “break” under similar circumstances!

Now run along, little Skeeter Peters, and let the grown ups discuss.

  104. pete says:

Has anyone else studied George Patton? He became infamous for the “slapping incident” when he accused a soldier of cowardice and slapped him. In fact, there were two similar incidents.

Anyway. He got in a lot of trouble and even lost his command. But, his apologies and atonement were not forced. When one reads his own writings and the writings of his close associates it is crystal clear that he felt he had dishonored himself. He also realized that his actions were, in part, due to his own stress and fatigue and he even changed his personal regimen and the way he used his subordinates. I will never forget a quote from one of his staff officers who said; “If he ordered you to take a thirty minute nap he would give you Hell if you weren’t asleep in two minutes”.

The reason I bring this up is that I’m 100% certain that Patton, especially after the slapping incident, would slap Peters into an early grave for the mere suggestion that a soldier deserted without proof.

  105. Wayne says:

    Peters is an a$$hat.

Add me to the list of pissed off veterans.

And Skeeter1… you are being an a$$hat too.

  106. DRxJ says:

AND WHERE THE FCK IS PWOUD????

  107. RUCeriousMaggot! says:

DRxJ, Proud won’t be commenting until FauxSnooze proclaims the soldier to be gay. Then he and Darlyy will show up with their usual bag of snot.

  108. Uncle Ho says:

    pete says:

Well, I don’t know if Patton would slap Peters silly, but I definitely know that I would.

  109. pete says:

My guess, DRxJ, is that the trolls are still full of pro-birther talking points. And I don’t think Rush has told them what to think about Peters yet.

  110. Zooey says:

    Skeeter1 says:

That’s a good enough endorsement for me.
    July 22nd, 2009 at 2:36 pm

    That’s nice.

  111. pete says:

I think Ol’ Blood-n-Guts would have been pretty pissed, Uncle Ho. If he were convinced someone deserted he would have shot him in person but he would never allow some weenie back home to get away with a groundless accusation against one of his men.

  114. Mr. Cobb says:

Nothing is being done about all the very determined sociopaths in this society and they do alot of damage. They may well doom us all.

  115. MapleStreet says:

Even I (who am relatively anti-military) cringe at the callous nature of this.

We recruit them under false pretenses (my local recruiter has fliers posted stating that you can enlist and they guarantee your training and post location. I assume that lasts as long as basic and then they move you to where they please ?)

We send them into war insisting we gave them the best available equipment – but to get correct body armor their families have to hold bake sales to raise money.

We send them into a “war” without definable objective or enemy.

Then when one gets captures, we instantly start a mythos that they deserted / are cowards / etc.

  116. republicanSScareme says:

Fortunately, Lt. Col. Ralph Peters is retired. We don’t need ten dollar thugs commanding our troops.

    Sprechen sie deutsch?

  117. Leftside Annie says:

I’m in agreement with those of you who said that Bergdahl’s family ought to sue those slanderous ugly morons at FUX for million$ and million$.

    Loathesome barstids, all of ‘em.

  118. Regis says:

As a retired Army LTC who spent a year as an infantry adviser in Vietnam, it is my observation that Peters is a right wing ideologue with the proverbial — as opposed to the real — military mind. He may be smart but he’s got a couple of wires that seem to be shorting out. Common sense zero. I served in the Pentagon for several years and was a certified Army strategist. I can assure you that officers like him don’t get to the top in the Army. He is a disgrace and I hope the Bergdahl’s sue him and Fox for all they’re worth. How any supposedly sane man can make his statements without access to all the facts is beyond me. Imagine having served in Peters’ unit.

  119. DanCaveman says:

No matter how he ended up captured, he has still served his country in combat longer than %99 percent of those in this country.

Hey O’Reilly – how was your tour in Vietnam?

  120. JJMO says:

O’Reilly ignores Peters’ original comment like it never happened. That’s unacceptable as O’Reilly should have asked Peters about his wanting the Taliban to kill our captive soldier becaue that is why people are taking issue with Peters. The rest of it such as whether he’s a deserter or out of his mind do not matter right now as we need to get him back alive.

Also, what’s with Peters saying get him back for the sake of his family? How about getting him back for the sake of is own life as it has worth too despite what Peters may personally think of him.

  121. politicscorner says:

Peters is a disgrace to the military.

  122. DanCaveman says:

Skeeter1 – I am doing my best not to type a sting of obscenities right now. First of all, it occurs to me that you have no idea what being a “Real American Soldier” is all about.

Second, you are taught to resist torture and coercion; however, it is fully expected you will crack. The goal is to resist so that any information you have may be useless WHEN you do crack. Everyone breaks, some sooner than others. It is irrelevant what propaganda videos he makes. He is still a soldier, he serves his country honorably. I am unwilling to condemn him for his service and certainly not willing to convict him of any wrong doing until all the facts are in.

You disgust me. You have no clue as to the ideals that this country stands for nor why so many have chosen to shed blood to protect them. I am going to guess that you haven’t ever sacrificed for the good of this country, let alone been a POW for it.

  123. neoconsrscum says:

One more example of CONTURDS “supporting the troops.”

  124. Robert M. says:

I’d like to run into “Col.” Peters and “thank him” for his words on behalf of myself and every other enlisted man who has worn a uniform and refused to leave their buddies behind when there was some kind of trouble.

  125. delafield says:

Retired Army Lt. Col. Ralph Peters suggested that the Taliban should kill Bergdahl because he is an apparent deserter.

Col. Peters thinks that deserters should be killed? Does he also think that George W. Bush should be killed because he deserted his post during the Vietnam War?

  126. cec says:

What does it mean when there is a vote up or down on a comment? I am new and dont quite get it.

  127. 1dmnolan says:

What do you think would happen, what do you think Bill and Peters would say, if the Taliban uploaded a photo of Pfc Bergdahl standing on a box, with a hood over his head, holding a wire in each hand?

  128. pete says:

    cec says:
What does it mean when there is a vote up or down on a comment? I am new and dont quite get it.

It’s quite simple. If you like a comment click “Vote Up”. If you dislike a comment click “Vote Down”. The total is displayed on the right. (I don’t vote either way on comments that don’t capture my interest but, that’s just how I do it.)

For instance: If you vote a comment up and I vote it down a (0) will be displayed. If we both vote it up a (2) will be displayed. If we both vote it down a (-2) will be displayed.

When a comment reaches (-10) it gets closed.

Pfc Bergdahl is the Reichwhiners’ worst nightmare, 1dmnolan. They are faced with the horrible reality of a U.S. service man in the hands of the same people we have abused so terribly. And, as true sociopaths, rather than gaining compassion for our “enemies” they have condemned Pfc Bergdahl to his fate.

This was predicted. And it just may be one of the shittiest things these shitty people have done.

  130. pete says:

    I forgot my manners.

    Welcome to the forum, cec.

  131. cec says:

Pete, what you have explained is what I thought.Thanks. So I can consider a comment to be well received if the lunatic fringe votes it down. For example,General Oreilly is an as@#### and Col.Pecker deserve ….? Please !! vote this comment. Thanks!

  132. wiley says:

politicscorner, I accidentally voted down your post. Sorry—I have tics in my fingers. Nothing personal.

  133. cec says:

Pete ,thank you for the welcome.

  134. bluesunflower says:

Peters’ main contention, however, seems to be that Bergdahl has received media attention, while fallen soldiers do not.

I’d rather Bergdahl receive media attention, rather than the flags at half-mast attention the fallen solders get instead.

  135. The Shadow says:

First of all as a veteran Coward Bill O’Reilly has no right to critize this soldier at all. Secondly, this stupid rightwing colonel is betraying a fellow veteran who is being held by a hostile enemy force. And he should be ashamed of himself for attacking a man who will probably lose his life because he was defending our country and way of life. Bill O’Reilly you are less than dirt, may you rotten soul burn in hell for this.

  136. dawgs529 says:

People need to realize that mental disability is out of someone’s control just as much as getting cancer is out of someones control. The fact that the two idiots don’t understand this is beyond me. I’m not saying the soldier has any sort of mental issues, I don’t know, but they were vilifying him even if he did have something wrong with him. It’s just not right.

  137. Jane E. Schneider says:

    Welcome to TP, cec.

“Peters’ main contention, however, seems to be that Bergdahl has received media attention, while fallen soldiers do not.”

If he had a problem with our fallen soldiers not receiving media attention, that is no justification for his unfounded attack on this poor soldier. Just where did Fux Noose find this nutjob – seriously? Go back to McMetal’s comment at #72, and RUCerious’s comment at #79 – that is not how a sane and reasonable human being thinks. And Fux is willing to go down this road with this psycho?

I truly hope that Fux has overestimated the insultability of their audience.

Being AWOL is not punishable by death. Being late to work can be considered being AWOL.

Desertion is punishable by death, I see no evidence that this man deserted.

  140. Quizmos says:

I would like Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl, and his family to know that I, as an American, thank him for his service and continue to respect and support him. Know that he is in the thoughts and prayers of every good American citizen who supports our troops, and abides by the code that we will leave no one behind as they work to protect our country. We do not turn our backs to those brave enough to serve. May God protect and comfort Pfc. Bergdahl until his safe return.

I am very sorry to hear this Colonel so publicly abandon his fellow soldier on the battlefield, in trade for money and fifteen minutes of fame. He should be stripped of his title and any retirement funds he receives from the American taxpayers. We all have a patriotic duty to support our POWs, and work to get them safely back into the hands of their homeland.

  141. woke says:

Not sure why my post was deleted with no mention, perhaps the linked/article that shows that over 40,000 veterans have deserted from 2000-2005…..and it has increased each year. Add three more years to the 40,000….and realize that nearly all desert here in the states and do not even suffer incarceration, but are given dishonorable discharges instead.

    40,000 PLUS……

just line em all up eh, Wiley?

Add to the 40,000 PLUS deserters those who return with PTSD and the incredible amount of SUICIDES and one must wonder if these vets know something those who never serve in a war zone do not….eh?

  142. Gasman says:

Ralph Peters is a traitorous imbecile that just handed the Taliban a propaganda tool to help further break Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl. Peters should be personae non grata on all TV news programs. His career as an analyst should end as of last night. An apology is required – to the nation and the Bergdahl family – but will not atone for the harm that he has done. He has openly called for the death of an American soldier. During a time of war, and that constitutes criminal behavior. Let’s lock up Mr. Peters and maybe apply some of those “enhanced interrogation” techniques and see how long he lasts. Maybe he will come to some understanding of what Pfc. Bergdahl is going through.

As for FauxNews, it is time to launch a national boycott on their sponsors. FauxNews openly provokes racism with its campaigns for the Tea Bag Parties. The do the same by fomenting the moronic Birthers. They are nothing more than a Republican Party organ spewing venom and lies. They also endorse the sleazy ambush tactics employed by Bill O’Reilly. On top of all of the above, they engage in the Orwellian practice of regularly altering their transcripts to try and change the official record of their programs. They are not a news organization, they are a bullying propaganda machine. Now they have provided a platform for someone advocating the execution of a captured U.S. soldier.

Any sponsor needs to understand that by supporting FauxNews with ad revenues they are at least giving tacit support to their cowardly, reprehensible, and traitorous tactics. I will gladly boycott any business that supports FauxNews. It’s time they were held responsible for their disgusting actions.

The White House should yank their press credentials and we should all pledge to not patronize supporters of the traitors at FauxNews.

How do we start the boycott?

  143. marlow says:

I’ll say this again: Colonel Peters is a maggot, a disgace to the armed forces, a disgrace to the uniform he wears, and a disgrace to the nation as a whole. Picking on a captured soldier whose life hangs in the balance when he cannot hope to be in possession of all the facts is pretty much par for the course at the faux fascist network. Talk about supporting the troops…
