Limbaugh: I get high ratings from ‘being positive,’ ‘inspiring and motivational.’

On Fox News last night, Rush Limbaugh noted Aug. 1 marks his 21st anniversary of being on air. When host Greta Van Susteren asked him what his “secret” is to his “amazing” “longevity,” Limbaugh replied that it’s his “positive” and “inspiring” messages:

People don’t want to be beat up every day with, This caffeine product is going to kill you, or, The seas are rising and New York’s going to get flooded. They want to hear about greatness.

They want — people want to be inspired! People want to be motivated. They want their positive thoughts validated. They don’t want to hear every day how everything’s going to hell in a handbasket and there’s a shortage of handbaskets. They don’t want to hear this. That’s what gets ratings on television. I have shown you get ratings on radio being positive, respecting the audience, being inspiring and motivational at times, when it’s necessary.

Watch it:

Showing off some of his “positive” messages, Limbaugh last night said that Obama’s health care reform was “an ideological attempt to control freedom, limit it as much as possible.” Limbaugh also tried to fear-monger about how Obama is making the situation worse for the American public, saying, “They don’t have jobs. They don’t have rising incomes. They don’t have the seas being lowered. He actually promised that. We — none of — we don’t have anything positive happening.” (HT: News Hounds)

Well Rush you get low marks for lying, stupidity, blatant propagandization, and lowering the collective IQ by making anyone who listens to you and takes you seriously that much stupider and more delusional. All in all you are like a plague rat without the integrity and self discipline

My GOD you are stupid. First he does NOT have 20 million listeners per day. That is bunk. The aggregate for a weak is ESTIMATED at that number and even then it is based on how many radio stations. Yeah he was given away for free for years and got into a bunch of stations. Of COURSE we dont have much on the radio. We are liberals not sheep brained morons like YOU that tune into radio programs to find out what we think. That is what brainwashed hiveming cretins like YOU do. Rush is an ADMITTED liar. He is a propagandist only the stupidest people imaginable tune into propagadists on purpose. That would be people as stupid as YOU. If you had any sense or self respect at all you would be ashamed as it is you KNOW you are too stupid to think for yourself so you worship at Rushs alter. The truly sad thing is when Rush is at his country club smoking his Cubans and drinking his hundred year old Cognac. He may hate people like me because I am a liberal and not stupid enough to fall for his BS but trust me he has nothing but contempt for morons like you who do

I know it is their fault for listening to the “sky is falling” everyday, and I have honestly asked folks “Whats the matter”? Some of the horrors they tell me are enough to make a Navy Seal cower in the corner with wet pants. Anymore I don’t ask WHERE they heard this, I TELL them where they heard it. To my amazement a lot of these folks when told the truth seem to walk away with a lighter demeanor and a regular gait instead of a dead man’s shuffle. Granted times are tough but to listen to these lying fear mongers could really have people considering their own demise or worse yet the demise of a liberal like ME and YOU! 56. Badger says:

    Krystalview,

I have to respectfully disagree. As the old joke goes, if you think Radio is Last century, you need a better Radio.

Rush Limbaugh’s Bigoted Worldview IS very Last Century….but Public Radio is a cultural lifeline and information source for me.

NPR has, IMHO, the BEST on the ground reporting in Iraq and Afghanistan. They rebroadcast the BBC and Canadian Programs overnite. The Talk shows on NPR showcase professors and authors, with a Wide Perspective, that actually Know what they are talking about, because they have STUDIED the Problem.
And the News Programs designate Airtime to Corrections and Listener Feedback.

Those stuck in their cars during traffic jams can use this time to become INFORMED.

And the Stations in My state have Moved into the 21st Century, by streaming their Programing on the WEB, and Pod Casting from their archives.

And finally….Listeners show their approval by Making ever increasing Pledges during fund raising drives.

“being positive” = I’ll positively kick anyone in the nuts that my corporate masters tell me to.

“inspiring” = I get the mental, moral and social defectives of the country riled up, but good.

“motivational” = My drone listeners will do anything–and I mean anything–I tell them to do.

  62. whatizz says:

to put Rush in perspective, remember that he got tossed off of Gameday on ESPN because he said Donovan Mcnabb was not smart enough to play QB in the NFL. I would call that a “positive” spin on race relations. He used to go after drug users on his show until he got pinched for abusing oxycontin. I think it is very positive that his radio network awarded a drug abuser a huge contract.Another positive is his affection for Newt Gingrich, but then they have been married the same amount of times.I don’t think i have to say anymore.

Despite certain flaws in the previous adminstration, I don’t recall that Mr. Limpdiddler bothered to call out any of the players, but he went on to hope, pray and spray the news all over the place that he hoped the new president would fail. Truly a fine upstanding American, Mr. Limpdiddler, and a class one chickenhawk, too.

I used to listen to Rush to learn what the so-called right-wing was thinking until his hatred and obvious disinterest in hearing any other view but his own finally disgusted me.

There comes a time when you have to call a kettle that is black, black. This is not being narrow minded, it is called being reasonable, something that Limbaugh is NOT.

I don’t need to listen to Limbaugh spread his hatred all over the airwaves, not when I’ve had to live and suffer the consequences of it. And I get my informed viewpoints by reading as much material as I can get my hands on about what is going on in this country. I’d never listen to Lumbaugh if I wanted an informed opinion because he doesn’t have one, only a bully pulpit from which he vomits out his own form of hatred.

He is bought and paid for. He doesn’t choose what he says. He does his job, goes home, gets bent and passes out. He is a non-issue. He hasn’t been relevant ever. The more the left pays attention to him the more power he gets. TP should Never do stories about him (other than an obituary). He is a symbol of how weak the right wing is. Every right winger out there listens to him. 20 million, which mean the left wing has 280 million. As long as rush is the republican figure head, they will continue to suck at everything, which is bad for America. It would be great if Both parties were freaking awesome. but instead of wanting everyone to succeed Rush wants everyone to fail. doesn’t sound too positive to me.

  111. AaronQ of Maine says:

    I know what you mean!
    The government should:

    1) Let companies run scams with no fear of punishment.
    2) Let companies sell untested products to infants.
    3) Let companies continue to run without paying their workers.
    4) Get rid of restrictions on how little companies can pay people.
    5) Let officials give no bid contracts to their buddies during crisis.
    6) Let crazy people make up statics out of thin air.
    7) ”
    8) Put poor people in slave camps.
    9) Make more cliffs for people to fall off.
    10) Let monopolies charge $50 for a loaf of bread.
    11) Let gas stations in the ghetto charge $15 a gallon.
    12) Make large families homeless.
    13) Let people in charge retirement funds go to Las Vegas with the cash.
    14) Make bridges for homeless to sleep under.
    15) Only allow sons of rich people to attend college.
    16) Allow corporal punishment at the work place.
    17) Abolish the pledge of allegiance and the the miranda rights laws.

The thing is…all you dimwits combined wealth…including your parents…in whose basement you still live in…do not equal Rush’s wealth now.

And this my friends is the problem with conservatives…For a group of people who preach morality and “family values” and Jesus this, Jesus that, they sure can only see the worth of people not in their hearts and good intentions, but rather their pocketbook. It doesn’t matter how evil one’s heart is but if he’s making $50 million a year, he’s virtually virtuous and pure in the minds of conservatives. It doesn’t matter how virtuous and good you are, if you don’t make anything, you are worthless in the minds of conservatives. That is the problem with today’s conservative movement.

  114. forestnfama says:

Greta question first of all assumes that Russ is as popular as he claims which is a total lie. Given that he gives lots of radio away for free just to boost his numbers. Drive anywhere into the interior of America and you can hear his stupid program two or three times a day. The real truth is almost 50% of Americans are ignorant fools who don’t know anything about what is really going on in this world. That’s why they call themselves ditto heads. Translation 1# = dumb ass rednecks translation 2# religious bigots translation 3# super rich who uses these other dumb asses and religious bigots to win elections. It is these lemmings that are so influenced by the ignorance of someone like Limbaugh.

A new Gallup Poll shows that Republicans are leaderless. It found that most Americans cannot even identify “the main person” who speaks for Republicans today.

WASHINGTON — Republicans, out of power and divided over how to get it back, are finding even the most basic questions hard to answer.
Here’s one: Who speaks for the GOP?

The question flummoxes most Americans, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds, which is among the reasons for the party’s sagging state and uncertain direction.

  123. jefdongar says:

There are many reasons why this country is screwed up. Rush Limbaugh is one of those key reasons. He is the most prolific populist of the right wing lunatic fringe. In saner times, as described in Charles Pierce’s book, Idiot America, Limbaugh would have been received as loud mouth crank. But instead, in the America we live in now he has risen in status as a respected political “mover and shaker” that controls the minds of millions. I will give you an example. If the doctor who delivered Barrack Obama came to a “birther” and showed him the actual birth certificate, that “birther would not believe him… until Rush Limbaugh told him it was true. Of course Rush would lie because his agenda is not about honesty. It is about him remaining status quo.

  134. Bozo The Neoclown says:

the “secret” to his suckcess is this:
give the program away to radio stations for free in exchange for free commerical airtime to hawk products from his crappy sponsors like craftmatic adjustible beds and gold bond. afterall, not many radio stations would pass up a free show which cuts down on their operational costs.

  135. Big Dan says:

Why isn’t Limbaugh (and any of the rightwing media) telling his listeners, that Israel has national health care for all? And that we are the only country without it? And that WE are probably paying for Israel’s national health care?

Health care in Israel is both universal and compulsory, and is administered by a small number of organizations with funding from the government. All Israeli citizens are entitled to the same Uniform Benefits Package, regardless of which organization they are a member of, and treatment under this package is funded for all citizens regardless of their financial means.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_care_in_Israel

They all talk about “pro Israel this” and “pro Israel that”…and they’re all anti-national health care for all in the U.S…..but NEVER tell their listeners ISRAEL HAS IT!!!!!!!

  136. Wannabekool says:

Something’s happened to Limbaugh’s brain. It doesn’t seem to be working. I wonder if doing too much evil turns one into an evil being.

  137. ultfan says:

If Rush was honest, he would have said, “They want — my audience wants to be inspired and motivated to despise anyone who isn‘t white and conservative. They want their twisted thoughts validated.” I was hoping that Greta would call him out for this BS, but one reason Rush goes on the Fox News Channel is that he knows his views won’t be challenged.

Ironically, Rush has inspired me. After being subjected to his “Pretzel Logic”, I feel like listening to some Steely Dan.

  138. noseeum says:

Rush has truly inspired me to be ever watchful and aware that there are indeed wacko people in the world.

  139. marlow says:

Rush has high ratings because he feeds and feeds off of the hatred and stupidity which has always bubbled below the surface of our national discourse. The next fascist sympathizer who blows up a building or tries to assassinate someone will be seen to have been an avid listener of this excrescence’s radio program.

  140. EugeneDebs says:

    RealityCheck says

You ignorant piece of dogshit. Rush is rich because people as unbelievably stupid as YOU need someone to think for them and business is glad to underwrite a Rush to brainwash you with their stupid. My GOD you are such a stupid punkass troll. Now someone with a modicrum of self respect would die of embarassment at publicly exposing how ignorant, brainwasehd and stupid they are but not you. You take being stupid to all new horizons and are PROUD of what a moron you are. I scrape thing off of my shoe that are smarter and make a better contribution to mankind as you do. Its just sad how stupid and pathetic you are.

  141. EugeneDebs says:

Are you still trying to sell that Nazis were socialsts stupidity. YOU are a moron. Hitler put REAL socialist in concentration camps. Only the stupidest and most gullible morons in the entiere world bought that bilge when Golberg puked it out. So we get that you are stupid and brainwashed but please stop being boring. Repeating stupidity doesnt change it from BEING stupidity. I understand that you are so stupid that stupidity is all you have but spare us endless repitions of it. Anyone who knows ANYTHING about politics OR history knows Nazis were on the RIGHT end of the political spectrum and all your SKWWWWWAAAAAAKKKKKKish propaganda parrrot repitions wont change that. It just makes you look like the fool you obviously are.

  142. lvdragonlady says:

No Rush, that is NOT the reason for high ratings. The ratings stem from uneducated people that do NOT have the skills to do any kind of research and would rather have someone to tell them how they feel, what to think and what to be against.

  143. jrfunkenstein says:

Why do I smell feces every time I see a picture of this hate filled, bloated creep?

  144. donaldinks says:

Here is a good “clue” as to what Rush is really about:
Go back and listen to that short clip, and (if you can)
count how many times Rush says the words: I, Me My.
    Just saying…

  145. DoubleEdgeSword says:

The ‘core argument’ of right-wing radio is always the doomsday scenario, that changing anything means the end of everything!? This is not a serious argument, saving the entire notion of an informative radio industry, as a given. Their ‘insufficient’ weapons include creativity, tradition, cultural difference, and extremes in personal living. It is ours, ‘We The People’, to fight back with library cards, and personal collections of books and periodicals or ‘first-hand sources.’ This is nothing less than a battle, because American Families are faced with serious choices with regard to employment, health care, education, and retirement, maybe because entire families don’t fit into sufficient categories labeled, “Identical”, or “Similar” or “Dissimilar?”
