Gohmert Trades Ideas With Conspiracy Theorist, Says Obama Health Plan Will ‘Absolutely Kill Senior Citizens’

Last Friday, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) joined radical conspiracy theorist Alex Jones on his radio talk show for an interview. Jones has made a name for himself propagating conspiracies ranging from the claim that Bill Clinton planned the Oklahoma City bombings to the idea that the attacks on 9/11 were orchestrated by a cabal of American and Israeli government officials.

During the 30-minute interview about “nation ending stuff,” Gohmert used his opportunity on the Jones show to showcase his own odd anti-Obama conspiracy theories:

GOHMERT: We’ve been battling this socialist health care, the nationalization of health care, that is going to absolutely kill senior citizens. They’ll put them on lists and force them to die early because they won’t get the treatment as early as they need. [...] I would rather stop this socialization of health care because once the government pays for your health care, they have every right to tell you what you eat, what you drink, how you exercise, where you live. [...] But if we’re going to pay 700 million dollars like we voted last Friday to put condoms on wild horses, and I know it just says an un-permanent enhanced contraception whatever the heck that is. I guess it follows that they’re eventually get around to doing it to us.

The outrageous claim that a public option in health care will kill people is becoming a popular meme within the GOP caucus, used also by members such as Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA). But not to be outdone, Jones offered the congressman his own set of conspiracy theories and outlandish statements, many of which Gohmert agreed with:

JONES: Did you hear about the WH science czar calling for putting stuff in the water to sterilize us?

GOHMET: No, I had not heard that. [...]

GOHMERT: People are always willing to give up their liberty to get economic stability.

JONES: Look at Hitler.

GOHMERT: Absolutely. Boy that’s the best example, maybe the best example. […]

JONES: As the Time magazine headline said, we’ve almost got national health care. They’ve almost got eugenics control grid over us. Can you speak to your website, how we help you. In closing, the youth brigades, national service compulsory in a group outside the military under the Democratic party control in the city year in the red and black uniforms? [...] In closing, and we’re going to let you go sir, the youth brigades, national compulsory service, the Democrats have introduced those bills. Your take on that?

GOHMERT: Well you just referred to that point in history where this stuff has been done before. It was done in the 1930s and its not the only place its been done. It has been done throughout history.

JONES: Mao did it.

GOHMERT: Well that’s exactly what I was thinking of. This is the kind of the thing we got to stop. We got to get back to the roots, the basics.

Listen here:

While swapping conspiracy theories, the two also traded compliments. “That shows how on top of things you are, Alex,” said Gohmert at one point, praising the talk show’s knowledge. Jones also thanked Gohmert many times and reminded him that “you’re there fighting and we’re supporting you.”

Despite his outlandish views, Jones’ influence can not be underestimated. Richard Poplawski, the young man who gunned down three Pittsburgh police officers earlier this year after professing a fear that the government would confiscate his guns, was a die-hard fan of Jones. Jones, who rants daily about Obama’s intentions to revoke the 2nd amendment, is also one of the loudest voices for the “birther movement.”

JONES: Did you hear about the WH science czar calling for putting stuff in the water to sterilize us?

GOHMERT: No, I had not heard that.

JONES: I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

JONES: Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk… ice cream. Ice cream, Mandrake, children’s ice cream.

    GOHMERT: Lord, Jack.

JONES: You know when fluoridation first began?

    GOHMERT: I… no, no. I don’t, Jack.

JONES: Nineteen hundred and forty-six. Nineteen forty-six, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It’s incredibly obvious, isn’t it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That’s the way your hard-core Commie works.

  5. singe_101 says:

Well wouldn’t the seniors rather die than ingest juice of dead babies and monkey kidneys? Don’t interfere, Jones.

    /snark

He’s right, though. Let’s go back to the roots, the basics. All the Tribes and other indigenous peoples can reclaim their land and live as they please. We’ll take some reservations and pack in people like India.

    Oops, too far?

Meanwhile, on planet Earth, the US Government has been providing “socialized” health care to the elderly for over fifty years. How many senior citizens have been put to death by the government so far?

  8. LizCoro says:

    Truthfully . .

I’m glad these ’special needs’ politicians are ‘coming out’!!

Their ’special needs’ include lack of retention and when these ’sound bites are aired’ during their re-election campaigns, they’ll just be blithering idiots and do their usual ranting about ‘bashing’ . .

    Keep it coming fools!!

  9. Mike Hunt says:

Talking reason with these nut cases is pointless. Yet it would be interesting to get statistics on how many seniors die waiting for health care in other “socialist” nations like Great Britain, France, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, to name just a few, who have and enjoy national health care.

Of course what good Repignofascist would let fact get in the way of their argument?

  13. House of Roberts says:

Senior citizens are already on Medicare and this isn’t happening. They’re already on a socialized single-payer program.

  15. wiley says:

I don’t care if I sound like a tin-foil hatter—Alex Jones poisons the well. It’s a mistake to dismiss everything he says as a lie. He can have most people dismissing truth as outrageous conspiracy theory by trumpeting the truth in exactly the same way he trumpets lies. It’s an old tactic, used much by the C.I.A., KGB, and sociopaths everywhere.

This idea that the public option will kill seniors is, of course, a blatant lie. Watching Fox news and being bitter, hateful, bigoted basket cases is killing more seniors than the public option ever will.

  28. barfly says:

  29. misscoleopteramolly says:

I’m curious. We have a lot of alarmists on the right — braying to anybody who will listen about how people are going to die, private insurance will cease to exist, we’re going to turn into the Soviet Union under Stalin, etc., etc.

It’s been pointed out that many countries already have what the wingnuts are decrying as “socialized medicine”, but the examples provided by both sides tend to be countries on single-payer systems. United Kingdom, Canada, France.

Never mind that the United Kingdom, Canada, and France aren’t planning to scrap their single-payer systems and turn the whole operation over to private companies anytime soon. And never mind that the best the wingnuts can do is provide a few isolated instances of some Canadian somewhere who had to wait several months for a knee replacement or some such scary story. Nobody has been able to make a convincing argument that any of these systems themselves are in danger of collapsing.

However, single-payer isn’t even on the table here. So why aren’t we looking at countries who have something a little closer to what President Obama is proposing? I did a little looking, and I found Switzerland — a country where public and private insurance providers coexist. Yes, all Swiss are required by law to have insurance, but they have a number of choices — from public AND private sources. And since employers are out of the equation, they’re not limited to the insurance company their employer was able to make the best deal with.

    http://www.justlanded.com/english/Switzerland/Switzerland-Guide/Health/Health-insurance

Swiss law requires everybody to have insurance to cover basic services — treatment for illness, accident, maternity, and medication prescribed by a doctor. Those who wish can purchase insurance to cover additional perks or services (such as a guaranteed private room in a hospital, for example). About 40% of the Swiss opt to upgrade their insurance in this manner at an additional cost.

Even though the Swiss system isn’t exactly like what’s being proposed here, it comes closer to it than the single-payer plans in other countries. So why aren’t we hearing more about how supposedly awful the Swiss system is? Why aren’t we hearing more Swiss horror stories about how private insurers are being forced out of business? Why aren’t we hearing about elderly Swiss being left to die untreated? And why aren’t we hearing about the Swiss system collapsing because it’s not sustainable?

My guess is because the Swiss system probably works.

    _____________________________________________________________

I suspect that’s probably what happened in 1993. There weren’t enough people hurting enough and outraged enough to keep up the fight.

Times are different now. There’s plenty of hurt, plenty of desperation, and plenty of outrage. With more and more people being priced out of the insurance system every day, there will be no rolling over as there was in 1993. And if there comes no significant relief, look for representatives and senators from BOTH parties to get kicked to the curb.

WTF!! Older people are mostly on Medicade or Medicare. They are totally different! So, I guess the young people who don’t have it or are underinsured are worth less? Is That what their implying. No offense, but my daughter who is 22 doesn’t have insurance although she works a full time job. So she isn’t worthy enough because she isn’t older and votes more often. That’s what it is boiling down to. For years politicains always pandered to the older generation because they vote in record numbers AND they are more Conservative. Must be nice.

As a resident of Austin, I see and hear Alex Jones and his fans almost every day. I happen to get a big kick out of listening to Alex’s rants…though perhaps I shouldn’t admit it.

I used to go around debunking Alex, until I realized the best way to debunk Alex Jones is to quote Alex Jones.

And I quote: “The government keeps giant, honeycombed hives of toddlers drugged on lithium.” Just one of many.

There is a blog–with the delicious name LEAVING ALEX JONESVILLE–devoted to discussing/debunking Jones’ wild and woolly claims:

  43. Spencer's mom says:

I’ve got a big, fat fact for these big, fat idiots: Chances are the seniors are going to die before the majority of the remaining population. But I don’t think it’s Medicare that’s going to kill them.

However, of the remaining people who die before they become seniors, not having health insurance will be a leading cause of death.

Therefore, you pigeyedsacksofshit, I can honestly say that “not passing Obama’s plan will absolutely kill non-senior citizens.”

    PEACE

  44. wiley says:

The government doesn’t keep “honeycombed hives of toddlers drugged on lithium”, unfortunately there has been a trend of diagnosing toddlers and infants as bipolar then prescribing them mood stabilizers and anti-psychotics. The true damage done by this well poisoning, is that serious issues get blown out of proportion, then blown off the radar.

  49. BigJonM-NZ says:

Watching this debate from afar (very afar I am in New Zealand) I cant help wanting to shout out to all my US friend WAKE THE F&^* UP! Even in a small country like NZ we are able to provide a level of basic medical care (along side private insurance for those who want it) that provides decent treatment no matter what your condition. I am a diabetic and I just totalled up the cost of my care to me $120.00NZD PER YEAR! That includes strips, insulin, needles/syringes and blood glucose tester. I just picked up 3 months insulin supply, my co-pay amount with the government $11.00NZD.

Yes as a high income earner I pay a little extra to visit my GP (doctor) about 50 dollars a time but I am ok with that as I go only twice a year.

I guess the biggest difference is the worry, I don’t have to. Even when I earn a six figure income I know my taxes (about 33-35 cents on the dollar) mean the government has me covered no matter what happens no matter the type, level and length of treatment I need. Ours is not the Rolls Royce of health care systems in NZ, in fact we are endlessly talking about how it can be better, but it is efficient, cost effective and free to those who need it. Yes we have waiting lists for elective surgery, but in nearly all cases if you need it you get it and quickly. Will there be isolated cases where things go wrong? Yes but no more that you have in your private systems.

WAKE UP OVER THERE YOU ARE BEING FED A LINE BY FOX AND THE GOP AND THE INSURANCE COMPANIES. Socialised or government provided medicine is not bad medicine.

But people who are ignorant can say anything and other ignorant people will believe it and pass it on as fact. That is what happens in the right wing of the Republican party. We can’t change ignorant people. We can only inform others who want to vote and vote for a sane Congressman or woman. Meanwhile call or write your own Congressman/woman and Senators and tell them you are watching their voting. We need a single payer system to compete with the profiteering insurance companies to bring down costs. I am uninsured and I have worked for 36 years in health care. Now since I am a personal contractor the only insurance I can get is COBRA and that is very expensive.

All you who believe the left right paradigm are fools, all you who attack Alex Jones are attacking a true patriot. Long live the Republic.

  63. ProgressiveEugenicist says:

How can Alex Jones not agree with being a slave to group think Progressive Ideologies like Obama’s Science Czar John P.Holdren.

John P. Holdren co-wrote “ECO SCIENCE” and called for mandatory sterilization, sterilizing chemicals in the tap water… and you know what Alex Jones is crazy for not being progressive enough to want to scientifically alter society.

Alex Jones exposes the forces behind both the RIGHT and the LEFT.

He exposed Bush for all his crimes. And still exposes corruption on a global scale.

But somehow, group think casualties are still confined to the dis-proven, debunked conspiracy theory that the LEFT or the RIGHT are any different in their actions.

    And about group think:

Think Progress claims that it is a “nonpartisan organization,” and yet it’s bankrolled by the Center for American Progress Action Fund, a think tank headed by Bill Clinton’s former chief of staff John D. Podesta (pictured top), who was also head of Barack Obama’s presidential transition team after the 2008 election.

According to SourceWatch, “CAP’s Progressive Media project emerged as a major communications war room on behalf of Obama’s domestic and foreign policy agenda and CAP became a strong advocate for escalation in Afghanistan. Progressive Media is run through the Center for American Project Action Fund, the more political 501(c)4 arm of CAP. It coordindates closely with the Common Purpose Project, an effort to create message discipline among the pro-Obama organizations, with a direct tie to the White House.”

Think Progress was vehemently anti-war during the Bush administration, but since Obama took power, bombing brown people in broken-backed third world countries has apparently become a “progressive” and “liberal” virtue.

According to Center for American Progress director Jennifer Palmieri, the organization is focused around “driving the White House’s message and agenda.”

How on earth can “driving the White House’s message and agenda” be deemed “non-partisan”?

Think Progress is nothing more than an echo chamber for Obama administration propaganda – it’s the Free Republic of the left-wing. It’s about as “non-partisan” as the Communist Party propaganda organ Pravda was during the Cold War.

  64. garye says:

  66. hurricane says:

This article lacks a proper refutation but rather falls to childish name calling. That’s because the writer can’t handle truth in his biased partisan mind.
