Recently, the birther movement has gained greater notoriety, with CNN’s Lou Dobbs promoting the discredited myth and right-wing activists confronting members of Congress. Though the conspiracy theory has been thoroughly-debunked, some Republicans continue to feed “the wacko wing” of the party. For instance, Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) recently told Politico that he thinks the birthers “have a point”:
But as if to illustrate the touchiness of the subject, Hoekstra quickly added: “Not that this isn’t important.”
Sen. Jim Inhofe has also tried to find the elusive middle ground.
“They have a point,” he said of the birthers. “I don’t discourage it. … But I’m going to pursue defeating [Obama] on things that I think are very destructive to America.”
It’s unclear why Politico characterizes Inhofe’s decided support for the “birthers” as an “elusive middle ground” stance.
The point that they make is the Constitutional mandate that the U.S. President be a natural born citizen, and the White House has not done a very good job of dispelling the concerns of these citizens. My focus is on issues where I can make a difference to stop the liberal agenda being pushed by President Obama.
Holocaust deniers have a point too, Inhofe. It doesn’t mean we should be encouraging them.
July 27th, 2009 at 9:52 amFine. Just tell me what that “point” is and why it is “important”.
July 27th, 2009 at 9:53 amThe only point birthers have is on the tops of their heads. Inhofe is stupid enough to belong among their numbers and the birther movement is made up of the stupidest people on Earth. I mean there is a lot of stupid on the right but even by those standards the birthers are a sad lot
July 27th, 2009 at 9:54 amInhofe: The birthers ‘have a point’…
– - As does the top of your head.
July 27th, 2009 at 9:54 amIt’s funny how little things like facts don’t seem to matter much in the thinking of the Right Wing…
July 27th, 2009 at 9:55 amDoes it surprise anyone that this gun totting racist moron would say they have a point? SHAME on the people of Oklahoma.
July 27th, 2009 at 9:58 amI am assuming you meant to hit the vote up on number 1…
July 27th, 2009 at 9:59 amThe “birthers” are neo-Confederate morons, stupid whites who hate non-whites and are furious that a non-white is in the White House.
Most of those folks have very little material wealth, and are played shamelessly by the holy roller theocrats such as Imhofe, who are hoping to install an evangelical
theocracy in this country.
The “birthers” are their storm troopers, and are the breeding machine to keep supplying the military machine with fresh replacements.
July 27th, 2009 at 10:00 amThough the conspiracy theory has been thoroughly-debunked, some Republicans continue to feed “the wacko wing” of the party. For instance, Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) recently told Politico that he thinks the birthers “have a point”

Now we have trailer trash showing up at Republic rallies with their little birth certificates in a ziplock baggie.
It’s like the McCain woman on SNL, wandering around with little factoids, but not sure how or where to apply them.
President Obama could carry his around too, but they still wouldn’t believe him.
If anyone had any doubts about Lou ‘the illegal’ Dobbs, they should be put to rest now. Lou’s job is to make news, not report it.
July 27th, 2009 at 10:04 amWhat did these fools think of George Bush’s destruction of everything American?
July 27th, 2009 at 10:04 amThat man was the worst president in history, who oversaw the near-collapse of the entire economy of the nation, fought an illegal war of choice based on lies, and off budget, sought to shred the Constitution and grant ultimate powers to the executive branch, corrupted the justice system – and you know the rest — yet these clowns think Obama is out to destroy American with his remedies to repair the damage done over the past ten years?
They have no points except for the figurative ones on their heads.
Though the conspiracy theory has been thoroughly-debunked, some Republicans continue to feed “the wacko wing” of the party./em>
well, sure. When you’re keeping a rabid attack weasel in your backyard, you don’t want him to get too hungry, or else he might decide your leg looks tasty.
July 27th, 2009 at 10:05 amThe “birthers” are not thinkers. They fly into a rage whenever they see a non-white person in their neighborhoods, or in a position of authortiy over them.
July 27th, 2009 at 10:06 amRepublicans don’t want to alienate their ignorant, fearful, bigoted, frightened, little base of uneducated nimrods.
July 27th, 2009 at 10:08 amWhen so-called “legitimate” news anchors promote this idiocy, it is no wonder that the non-thinking public believes the lies.
July 27th, 2009 at 10:09 amThis movement can be dangerous, folks — we’re laughing it off as belonging to a few rightwing nut cases, but this story continues to move through news cycles and the potential for horrific consequences is rising.
I think we must press the media (print and broadcast) to debunk this and stop giving validity to these insane claims for fear of the next step some of them might take.
Birthers including Inhofe are looking for one whack job to take his gun and get rid of the scary black man. The are inciting violence just like Palin did during the election.
July 27th, 2009 at 10:09 amThe dumbing down of America, in action.
My belief is that the GNOP is struggling with how to deal with this Birther issue. There still remain some thinking members of that party (few and far between, apparently) and they must see how foolish the party looks trying to lend credence to this idiocracy. But, since the GNOP has successfully alienated just about everyone else, they need to hold onto the WackWing nuts. What to do, what to do…

These people are thoroughly hopeless. Like the Clinton Chroniclers and the Truthers before them, the Birthers bring the level of public discourse in this country down to “National Inquierer” or “Fox News”.

July 27th, 2009 at 10:21 amI won’t discourage people from thinking that Inhofe is a damned idiot because I think they have a point.
July 27th, 2009 at 10:25 amThe rethugs are really irritated they can’t fabricate a sex scandal. They really tried with the idiot cab driver. It is evident now that they orchestrated the Paula Jones debacle to destroy the Clinton presidency and agenda. They will stretch this insanity out as long as they can to do the same to Obama. What we need is investigations into the crimes by Bushco and the rest of the right so the cancervatives have to play defense for their actual crimes instead of making up false ones.
July 27th, 2009 at 10:26 amI believe this will be the GOP downfall. After all the immigrant bashing, race baiting, homophobia and sexism. This has got to be the most inane, stupidest talking point they have left. By allowing this small fringe group all this attention, they are making fools of themselves. That woman who accosted that Repug (Moderate, by the way) last week apparently is in hiding. Even associates think she is nuts. If the Repugs jump on this bandwagon, they are contributing to their own downfall.

_______________
And the more it promotes the idea that Obama is not American. It doesn’t matter if it’s not true – the fact that it’s being repeated constantly – even if the repetition is a repeated debunking – will nevertheless plant the idea in people’s heads.
Keep in mind the results of the Irony of Satire study on political ideology and the Colbert Report. People who are predisposed towards conservative ideas tend to believe that Stephen Colbert is validating their beliefs when he’s clearly making fun of them. Just the mere usage of terms and talking points borrowed from the conservative playbook – even in jest – is in a way promoting them.
On the other hand, actively suppressing the idea would also be counterproductive, since it lets the birther crowd wonder why they’re being silenced and why their “controversy” is being covered up.
It’s exactly the same MO used by evolution deniers and moon hoaxers. Perhaps one day there’ll be a Birth Certificate Museum in Kansas somewhere.
July 27th, 2009 at 10:28 amPerfect setup….Let the right wing nation get into a full fledged lather and then pull out the original birth certificate.
July 27th, 2009 at 10:28 amI think Marie (17) has is completely right … this isn’t a joke and we shouldn’t just laugh at these folks. The situation is turning scary very fast and we’re heading into some serious territory here as this vitriol continues to escalate. These “less than subtle” code issues (he’s paling around with terrorists, he’s Muslim, he’s not our legitimate president, et.) are all aimed at the fringe element in this country. It’s time for all of us to stand up and demand that the leaders of this country and the media stop enabling this form of hate speech now.
July 27th, 2009 at 10:29 amThe points are on the top of the birthers heads.
July 27th, 2009 at 10:31 amPeople often wonder how Bill Clinton won re-election in ‘96 by such a large margin, after the Dems were obliterated in the midterms and healthcare reform was crushed by the GOP. It’s due in large part to insane shite like this. The more the rabid right-wing pushes a conspiracy theory, the more the media covers it, and the more it seems to benefit the “victim” of the conspiracy theory.
If the far-right keeps it up, Obama’s looking at another blowout in 2012.
July 27th, 2009 at 10:32 amQuestion: Would it be worthwhile for someone to propose a bill that confirms that President Barack Hussein Obama was born in Hawaii and is, and always has been, a natural born citizen of the United States?
The reason I ask this is because it would put the GNOPers in the position of either voting for the bill, thus alienating their only loyal base – the wingnutteria, or voting against the bill, thus demonstrating to the rest of the country that they, too, are complete and total idiots, and questioning the legitimacy of the President during a time of war.
It might be an interesting exercise…

July 27th, 2009 at 10:33 amSpencer’s mom says: But, since the GNOP has successfully alienated just about everyone else, they need to hold onto the WackWing nuts
Hi mom.
I think you are under a misapprehension.
A significant proportion of the GOP ‘leadership’ as a whole is as nutty and moronic as the ‘morans’ who keep them in office.
I don’t think the slightly more rational GOPers that are left have any say in the matter, publicly or privately. Ergo there’s no institutional struggle really, just everyone for themselves on each and every issue.
To quote Lord Elrond of RIvendell: “They are scattered, leaderless.”
July 27th, 2009 at 10:34 amI have a feeling that Inhofe is either truly buying into this whacko theory or a disproportionate number of the birthers live in his state and he’s afraid of losing votes.
If Inhofe really went in for conspiracy theories, he would be conceding that crackpots “have a point” for the moon landing hoax, 9/11 being an inside job, there being multiple gunmen who assassinated JFK, the earth being flat, and that the Holocaust never happened.

So? That won’t prove anything.
The doctor’s signature will be a forgery, the notary’s signature will be smudged, the paper won’t be the correct bond weight, the birth weight will be inaccurate due to a miscalibrated scale, and the paper will need to be carbon-dated to prove its antiquity. And so on.
People determined not to believe basic facts will come up with infinite reasons not to believe those facts when they are presented to them.
July 27th, 2009 at 10:36 amSpeaking of the whacko wing and birthers, where are all our trolls? All both of them.
July 27th, 2009 at 10:36 amThis whole thing is ridiculous. When you have Ann Coulter, yes, ANN COULTER call these people cranks you have trouble in GOP land. Already “The Free Republic” is denouncing her. Funny, “The Free Republic” always worshiped Ann until she grew some balls to call the ‘Birthers’ for what they are. Reminds me when Kathleen Parker called Palin for the empty shill she was and got death threats. I guess free debate isn’t important to Repugs.

That would be very interesting, for the reasons you describe. And just the making the proposal would stir the pot.
I happen to be an American citizen by birth because my mother was born in the US. But I don’t have a US birth certificate because none exists. What does exist (that I also don’t personally possess) is my official registration as a US citizen by dint of being born of an American mother and being registered as such with the US authorities.

There is no excuse for them.

July 27th, 2009 at 11:05 amIf Barack Obama was in fact perpetrating a monstrous hoax on the American people, the ACTUAL procedure would be to impeach him and remove him from office.
The only problem with that is that the Democrats control both houses of Congress, most Governorships, most state legislatures, and so on. Are all of them pod-people too?
And unless they ran Colin Powell, if there were a ‘do-over’ election they’d lose again, and probably by a bigger margin.
What they’re facing is not one peculiarly charismatic individual bucking a trend. What they’re facing is a trend. And they know it.
So instead of simple calls for impeachment, they talk secession. Major Cook refuses to obey the chain of command–which is illegitimate even if he’s sincere.
Even if he’s right.
After the 2004 election, a lot of disheartened liberals talked wistfully about moving to Canada. (Most decided to stay and fight.)
But these guys? They’ve got no place to go. At least not since apartheid fell. There’s definitely no place that would allow them to bring their guns. So their backs are up against the wall.
Of the militia compound..
You mean like… impeaching someone for lying about a blowjob?

July 27th, 2009 at 12:10 pmAnyone else notice that every time (and I mean EVERY TIME) watchpuppy corrects grammar or spelling, in that same post that he is correcting someone else he himself commits errors of grammar and spelling?
Mind boggling. Really.
My question is, is it arrogance, stupidity, hypocricy? What?

“It’ll” might be better — non-gender specific.
“On the fence”, as it were.
Looks like to be possibly either gender or even both simultaneously.
Doesn’t matter, as it is too stupid to properly breed.
July 27th, 2009 at 12:17 pmwatchpup has the mistaken idea that it is intelligent on the “technicality” that it has rudimentary primitive brain function.
July 27th, 2009 at 12:22 pmToo bad it is not intelligent enough to be embarrassed by itself.

The answer is YES. =)

Is not a “technicality” (in the sense it is being used here) meaning that someone did not follow the correct and lawful procedure in a matter?
Thus, to decry “technicalities” is to claim that laws and procedures are unnecessary.
Rather anarchistic, though I could see it also falling under a fascist mindset as well.
Teh stupid infects every cell, no?
July 27th, 2009 at 12:29 pmAs missmolly pointed out, when used as a contraction for “it is”, the proper punctuation is “it’s”. Similarly, when using a contraction of “you are” one should properly display it as “you’re”.
Just sayin’… if you’re going to base your attacks on another’s spelling and grammar, you should make sure your attacks are presented error-free in order to avoid an embarrassing stumble.
July 27th, 2009 at 12:31 pmInhofe…birthers…say no more.
July 27th, 2009 at 12:48 pmI have a watchdog, a mastiff to be exact.
He’s much, much, smarter than the watchdog who posts here.
July 27th, 2009 at 12:55 pmOops, messed up the italics on that last one, but my dog is still smarter than watchdog.
July 27th, 2009 at 12:57 pmThere is no middle with Inhofe…the Global Warming denier, Politico seems to be the “apologist” for these radical wackos!!

July 27th, 2009 at 1:02 pmI’ve said it before but this is my favorite troll jujitsu pratfall — bar none.
July 27th, 2009 at 1:08 pmrhf: I agree completely. There are a couple trolls who post here who appear to be nothing more than bored, intoxicated juveniles, amusing themselves by trying to instigate flame. I prefer to speak about them but not to them as much as possible. Or flag and forget.
Ralph: It IS amusing to see the typos in a post that is correcting someone else’s typos. But, man, it does get OLD when it is so consistent and repetitive.

And you have clearly summed up the repubilcan politicians. Nicely done.
July 27th, 2009 at 1:28 pmI hear what you’re saying, Cagey… but what the hey, we all have our guilty pleasures, right?
July 27th, 2009 at 1:31 pmInhofe spokesman Jared Young sent another statement to Greg Sargent on the birther issue:
The point that they make is the Constitutional mandate that the U.S. President be a natural born citizen, and the White House has not done a very good job of dispelling the concerns of these citizens. My focus is on issues where I can make a difference to stop the liberal agenda being pushed by President Obama.
Well, I did not know that the White House had an obligation to dispell the concerns of any ‘group of citizens’ who has a concern.
I’m still waiting on a clear investigation of the events of 9/11 (and there are a lot of people — at LEAST as many as the birthers — who want to know). Why didn’t the White House work harder to quell those questions? How about those concerned about the Iraq and Afghanistan engagements? Certainly more than the birthers want answers to those issues. How many issues and private citizen groups deserve White House time to make them feel happy? The list could go on for quite a bit.
Futhermore, there has already been more official time spent on the birther issue than should have been necessary, as the birth certificate WAS obtained, and was posted online. Any more time spent on them will only serve to substantiate their crazy claim.
Intriguing that the birthers are NOT wondering why the rest of our entire government and governmental system and branches seem to be just fine with President Obama’s birth credentials. The argument that there is a Democrat majority only works if you believe the Democrats act in subserviant lockstep like the republicans have…. but the clear evidence is to the contrary on that. Furthermore, a Democrat would STILL be in the rpesidency (Biden) if the birthers got what they wanted, so the argument that the Democrats would ‘protect their own’ lest they lose the executive is loony in itself. The VP would take charge, and by a strange coincidence, the VP is a Democrat as well.
Oh, and end your comment by re-affirming that you will do everyhting in your power to stop the President of the United States from accomplishing anything on his agenda.
How F#@king unpatriotic of you, you traitorous scumbag who obviously hates everything about democracy and America itself.

Yes…. I understand completely. :)
And I don’t think I’ve flagged watchpup. I think those flags should be reserved for comments that should be removed, not just because one disagrees or that they are just being stupid.
July 27th, 2009 at 1:47 pmInhofe doesn’t accept that greenhouse gases are having a detrimental effect on the earth’s environment despite overwhelming evidence to support that. If he doesn’t believe in likely tens of thousands of documents affirming global warming, then why would he accept one document affirming Obama’s US citizenship?
The man doesn’t care about proof or evidence, he’s sad that a white guy isn’t in the White House.

Yeah watchPUNK. We know you consider it entertainment to try to annoy people. What you dont get is you are too stupid to pull it off. So you just TRY to annoy people then THINK you did and that entertains you. Pretty much the definition of being a juvenile, petulant PUNK. So go scrape up some self respect somewhere and STFU
