Rob Portman is running for Ohio’s U.S. Senate seat in 2010 that is being vacated by retiring-Sen. George Voinovich (R). But Portman is also running from someone. Portman, who spent 12 years representing Ohio’s 2nd Congressional district has a campaign website that wants Ohioans to know he grew up learning the value of “hard work, leadership, and fiscal responsibility.” Notably, however, there’s an important name missing from Portman’s biography: George W. Bush.
For a politician who served in President Bush’s cabinet and who spent “his entire career in the orbit of the Bush family,” it’s a notable omission. In 2005, Portman gave up his congressional seat to serve as Bush’s U.S. Trade Representative and, later, as Office of Management and Budget Director. The AP wrote of Portman: “For an administration that cherishes loyalty, it’s difficult to find a more faithful supporter [of President Bush] than Rob Portman.” Bush, in turn, showered his “good friend” with praise:
I am here to say goodbye to a good friend. … Recently, Rob Portman came and told me that after 14 years of public service in Washington, he’s ready to head home to be with Jane and the family. I’ve known him for many years. There’s no finer man in public service than Rob Portman. He’s been a trusted adviser, and Laura and I are going to miss him. … I thank Rob for his service and good advice and, most of all, his friendship.
Self-described on his website as a “budget hawk,” Portman’s record under Bush proves otherwise. Over the period of Portman’s tenure, the budget deficit “nearly doubled.” The nation’s unemployment rate ballooned from 4.6 percent to 7.6 percent by the time Bush left office. Only 26 percent of Ohioans approved of Bush’s handling of the economy in 2008.
Now, Bush’s “trusted adviser” doesn’t seem anxious to acknowledge all the “good advice” he gave to President Bush.
We need to keep this guy front and center, and we need to supply the missing “Bush” stuff from his resume.
Do we need any other repiggie accomplices of the Bush/Cheney regime in our lives?
July 28th, 2009 at 4:07 pmGood luck washing off the stink of failure, Portman.
You guys love to play the “Guilty by Association” game with President Obama, now try playing defense after a tight little eight-year run with the least popular president in recent memory.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:08 pmI don’t think he “failed” to mention him.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:08 pmErase history
July 28th, 2009 at 4:09 pmChange the name of your country
Run like hell from Bush
No offense, but can you blame the guy? Either way the guy is toast. Bush is like a skunk. The stench will be wrapped around anyone who was associated with him. But we are talking about Ohio here. I don’t about the district, but Ohio let us down in 2004.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:09 pmThe pool of “availables” continues to shrink! It’s hard to remember that just a few years ago these lowlifes ruled the world, and represented America.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:10 pmWAYNEBRO, The fact that he didn’t mention Bush at all says volumes. Probably the most visable job the guy ever had, and he didn’t mention it? Come on!
July 28th, 2009 at 4:11 pmThe Ohio voters should be reminded daily of Portman’s role as Bush’s lapdog.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:12 pmRepublican Revisionism will clean him up and feed him to the Ohio Voters as the ONLY salvation from economic ruin . . . regardless of facts . . . . the old “tell a lie” . . .
July 28th, 2009 at 4:13 pmYou’re not too good with subtle innuendo, are you?
Like I said, I don’t think he “failed” to mention Bush.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:18 pmSmart move on Portman’s part as the voters just might put him in office to make sure President Obama and the US fail. Ohio voters might not care that their unemployment rate will go sky high. Think about how Bush won Ohio in his second term when the people of Ohio knew they were suffering from the Bush Policies. Ohio voters pushed Bush over to win and are now one of the highest unemployment States but that doesn’t seem to bother people. Now Portman might be a Republican candidate for President if he pulls this one off. Yes Portman can continue the Bush Mission and the Ohio voters can look forward to an unemployment rate of 90 per cent. Boehner laughs at his voters in Ohio as he lives large and has a lot of money from pay to play while the voters of his district are suffering but still giving Boehner their vote.

July 28th, 2009 at 4:24 pmOf course he didn’t. Look how long it took Gonzo to get a job.
This guy is running as fast and as far as he can from Bush.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:29 pm1) In most job applications, isn’t it considered immoral, possibly illegal, and often cause for dismissal if you leave out things on your application / resume ?
2) Why would anyone not mention that they had power and prestige associated with being a trusted advisor the the leader of the free world ?
I was gonna say rhetorical question, but then I noticed that I was associating Bush with the Free world. My bad.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:31 pmSelf-described on his website as a “budget hawk,” Portman’s record under Bush proves otherwise.
Or, as GDumbya would say, “heckuva job, Robbie”.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:32 pmI still can’t believe John Yoo and Gonzo can still get jobs. These guys should be shamed and should voluntarily sink into oblivion. But hey, Michael Vick can play Pro again, so why should we be suprised?
July 28th, 2009 at 4:34 pmDon’t worry. Some of us living in Ohio don’t intend to let the rest of the state forget Portman’s history. Aside from his tenure as the smartest kid on the Bush short bus Portman has never run statewide and hails from the same county that inflicted Ken Blackwell and Boob Taft (as well as an undistinguished state treasurer who abruptly resigned when two of his aides were caught peddling influence) on the state. If the economy doesn’t show some improvement by next year all bets are off. In the last two election cycles however the state has gone from having Republics in control of every branch of government and both senate seats to electing a Dem governor (in a landslide over Blackwell) and senator in 2006 and voting for Obama last year.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:35 pmI hope he gets squashed in 2010.
What a loser. He’s ashamed to be associated with Bush.
Another example of how bad things turned out. In time we’ll see more and more of how poorly this country was run the last 8 years.
JUST THINK, if we don’t continue to track these scum bags, Sara Palin could get elected!!! Actually probably “Jeb”.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:39 pmHmm. Large, unanswered gaps in a resume are considered a bad thing. Hey, we’ll help ya fill in the missing details!
In retrospect, Bush was not the most evil of that administration. The Decider who was ultimately responsible for everything that happened, yes, but the worst of the group? That’s a tough call.
PEACE
July 28th, 2009 at 4:40 pmHmmm.
Maybe Portman is still a “trusted advisor” of the ex-president.
Discretion is an essential quality when you serve the “Dark Side”.

wow, you read my mind.

July 28th, 2009 at 4:43 pmWell yes, that was obviously my point.
Of course subtle irony loses something when it has to be explained.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:44 pmAh, WAYNEBRO, you had the same reply with my comment. So, I think there is a problem with your ‘irony’.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:50 pmPeople who continue to vote for these cretins should be labeled as the IDIOTS that they are. Obama was right. They continue to vote against their own interest. I have no pity for STUPID PEOPLE. You get the leaders you deserve. WAKE UP MORONS!

July 28th, 2009 at 6:29 pmuhh, no, the subtle irony of my comments was evidently not a problem for most people as indicated by the votes “up” for them.
Only you and your friend here seemed to have difficulty comprehending them.
July 28th, 2009 at 6:49 pmFor Poppy Bush’s 80th birthday, he jumped out of an airplane. At government expense, a military plane, of course, with an accompanying airman/Ranger/whatever to make sure he pulled the cord on the chute.
But the funniest and most telling information about this jump was the name on Poppy’s jumpsuit. We all know he is usually referred to as George H. W. Bush; that’s his name. But the name on his jumpsuit was missing the W. Take a look.
Bush’s own father dropped the “W” out of his given birth name…now THAT’S what I call a dirty shame.
July 28th, 2009 at 11:51 pmShouldn’t do things you’re ashamed of.
July 29th, 2009 at 12:19 amI wouldn’t mention the loser idiot that ruined it all either.
