REPORT: A Statistical Analysis Of Policy Trends And Abnormalities In Sarah Palin’s Tweets

090729-palin-computerAfter stepping down on Sunday morning, Sarah Palin posted her final Twitter update to her @AKGovSarahPalin account, which had close to 125k followers. With Palin’s refusal to specifically address her post-gubernatorial plans, speculation has run rampant over what she intends to accomplish out of office. She is reportedly considering joining the ranks of the esteemed talk radio punditry.

An analysis of Palin’s Twitter activity in the weeks leading up to her final @AKGovSarahPalin update on Sunday may provide the best insight into what issue most concerns the former vice presidential nominee.

A comprehensive analysis of Palin’s last two months of Twitter updates (May 26-July 26) reveals that she mentioned energy 53 times out of 400 updates, far more than any other single issue. That is nearly 4 times as many mentions than the economy, and just short of 11 times the mentions of health care. A word cloud based on her Twitter activity reinforces the fact that Palin has been focusing her efforts on leading the GOP’s opposition to clean energy reform. Here’s a chart tracking Palin’s tweets:

090729-palin-twitter-energy

Some of Palin’s energy policy insights:

Attacking Cap-and-Trade: “DC plan for Cap & Trade (huge tax) hurts AK’s potential to supply more than 20% of US energy incl nat gas pipeline, see WashPost OpEd today” 9:16 AM Jul 14th

Drill Baby Drill: “Alaska’s role is to provide domestic energy leading to less reliance on foreign sources…” 10:11 AM May 27th

Drill Baby Drill Pt. 2: “Disappointed Congress once again voted to keep Americans dependent on foreign energy by keeping ANWR closed.” 5:39 PM Jun 10th

Drill Baby Drill Pt. 3: “EIA estimates US energy consumption will INCREASE by 44% in next 20 yrs. We MUST utilize our local energy sources. http://tinyurl.com/lesekh” 3:17 PM Jun 12th

Drill Baby Drill Pt. 4: “Great comments re safe offshore drilling by Lt Gov Parnell published today, asks Interior Dept to use tools in hand to meet court’s concerns” 6:43 AM Jun 17th

As Think Progress noted recently, Newt Gingrich has been touting Palin as a conservative leader on energy issues. On July 13, Palin wrote an op-ed slamming the cap-and-trade measure as “an enormous threat to our economy,” in spite of her previous support for capping carbon emissions. And last week, MoveOn began airing ads calling Palin “the new face of Republican opposition to clean energy.” Palin continues along the same tired Republican trajectory on energy: continued dependence on fossil fuels combined with subsidies to the oil, coal, and nuclear industries.

Update Last night, William Shatner performed a beat poetry rendition of Palin's Tweets on Conan O'Brien's show.

  2. sscncturn64 says:

Palin obviously needs money. I think she should ask Hugh Hefner if she could do a spread in playboy. She could probably demand a million dollar paycheck. Think of all the wingnuts (beck, orielly, limpdick) that would buy it. They can sit in their tree stands with one hand on their rifle and the pictures of palin in front of them. That would leave their other hand free to ,well whatever.

  3. KayInMaine says:

    Everything Palin does is abnormal.

  6. Arctic Ghetto says:

We could drill baby drill like gangbusters and wouldn’t come close satisfying our needs. We as a nation and as a people are going broke following oil power brokers. Palin will make a strange but effective mouthpiece for an industry that is pushing us to the rocks of history.

    How gross! Spread? Eeww.

She better hurry up…. air brushing can only do so much and that money making activity may be all she has.

  10. AngryOne says:

Sadly, Sarah Palin doesn’t even know how much energy Alaska produces:

“Let me speak specifically about a credential that I do bring to this table, Charlie, and that’s with the energy independence that I’ve been working on for these years as the governor of this state that produces nearly 20 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of energy…” (Misunderstanding Alaska’s 3.5% share of U.S. domestic energy production, September 11, 2008.)

  20. Spencer's mom says:

    Radio? Radio?

If ever there was a voice for silent movies. Sarah isn’t fit for the “talkies”.

Palin’s best moments, such as they were, were when she was seen and not heard! She shrieks, she’s shrill and she makes no sense! “Word salad” is the best definition I’ve heard to date of PalinSpeak.

Just go away, Sarah. Just go away.

  21. libertarianism says:

  26. Leftside Annie says:

I’m sure it’s been said before, but it’s well worth saying again:

Sarah Palin puts the “TWIT” in “Twitter.”

  27. had enough says:

Palin is an empty head with the ability to attract and gain attention – some, if not all of that ability learned in broadcasting school.

  28. okie dokie says:

Sarah is the definition of verbal abuse.

    And adjective abuse, as well.

  29. Xisithrus says:

I think Sarah is a pretty woman.

On the subject of energy she is, it seems, concerned with only two sources of it, those being oil and natural gas.

Even so, if she were a true expert on all sources of energy would that be a resume for office of president?

    I think not.

  30. Leftside Annie says:

So, can she fancy pageant walk and Twitter at the same time?

  31. The Moderate Squad says:

Twitter is perfect for Palin – the format is so short she’s done before she has a chance to quit …

  34. sscncturn64 says:

#29 Xisithrus, alot of people think palin is pretty. One of the reasons that mcaine chose her as a running mate is because he knew her looks would get him some votes.
The sad reality is that some people vote for canidates for silly reasons like their looks,or he or she is someone you would like to have a beer with. Then theres the millions of people who arent even registered to vote. I cant even comprehend how you wouldnt want to get involved with politics and vote.

  35. Spencer's mom says:

Ms. Palin has 135k followers on Twitter. But she supposedly have the support of tens of millions of Americans for the presidency, and the last few months have been the most “interesting” times she’s given us so far?

I’d bet many of those following her on Twitter only do so to see what stupid things she’ll Tweet. Then there are the Alaskans. So how many of her loyal followers are actually loyally following her?

    PEACE

  36. The Moderate Squad says:

WAYNEBRO @ 33: Thanks, that was hugely funny.

Let’s examine the word “expert” for a moment. “ex” is a prefix that means “former” spurt or in it’s form in this word “xpert” means “drip under pressure”

So that would mean that she is a “former drip under pressure”. That pretty much sums up the former Governor of Alaska!

  84. wiley says:

Here’s an excerpt from my favorite story, from Bruce Blair, about launch codes:

Last month I asked Robert McNamara, the secretary of defense during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, what he believed back in the 1960s was the status of technical locks on the Minuteman intercontinental missiles. These long-range nuclear-tipped missiles first came on line during the Cuban missile crisis and grew to a force of 1,000 during the McNamara years — the backbone of the U.S. strategic deterrent through the late 1960s. McNamara replied, in his trade-mark, assertively confident manner that he personally saw to it that these special locks (known to wonks as “Permissive Action Links”) were installed on the Minuteman force, and that he regarded them as essential to strict central control and preventing unauthorized launch.

The Strategic Air Command (SAC) in Omaha quietly decided to set the “locks” to all zeros in order to circumvent this safeguard. During the early to mid-1970s, during my stint as a Minuteman launch officer, they still had not been changed. Our launch checklist in fact instructed us, the firing crew, to double-check the locking panel in our underground launch bunker to ensure that no digits other than zero had been inadvertently dialed into the panel. SAC remained far less concerned about unauthorized launches than about the potential of these safeguards to interfere with the implementation of wartime launch orders. And so the “secret unlock code” during the height of the nuclear crises of the Cold War remained constant at OOOOOOOO.

By the same token, I don’t believe that the nuclear apparatus would launch a nuclear war because Palin or Bush, or anyone else got some ideological hair up their butt and wanted to prove something.

  85. wiley says:

Oh, yeah—here’s the link to that “Keeping Presidents in the Dark” story.

Obviously the launch codes wiley, is a Euphemism for being in command of the armed forces and international affairs. The President starts wars, as we see with Bush in Iraq.

Wars lead to bigger wars and bigger wars can lead to nuclear war.

No one was suggesting Palin would walk into the white house and start entering codes into some secret terminal.

    It was a euphemism.

Your misogyny is showing and it ain’t as PROGRESSIVE as you might think.

I get it, she is one of the most despicable politicians in years, doubly so because she is a woman who wants to take rights away from other women.

Your collective political spankathon does nothing for the cause.

So, “There are enough reasons to slam palin” (your words). The posts that you referenced are not misogyinistic, and neither are those who posted them (if you were a regular here you would know that). While references to palin’s ability to sell pictures of herself naked or in sexual situations is crude, it is also true — she would do very well with that route, particualrly among the conservatives (who, by availabvle data, are the largest puveyors of pornography).

Furthermore, it is appropriate to make such comments. She was used as a sexual image, she was a (runneer-up) beauty pageant contestant, and proud of it (now — if you don’t think beauty pageants are demaeaning and degrading then you are confused — in fact I could, but won;t do so here, argue that women engaged in pornography are stronger and more willful than the beauty pageant contestants). And add to that that SHE HERSELF used her looks (”Cool State, Hot Rep”, or something to that effect was one of HER slogans, and I’ve seen photos of her wearing that on her shirt and on a campaign pin). So, she herself is aware and has deliberately used the fact that she is female and attractive (at least to some).

Fact of the matter is that Playboy (and others) DO pay 1 mil, or more, for celebrity photo shoots. It is actually not hyperbole to suggest that Playboy would do so (and they would probably pay more than that to Palin). Your suggestion also seems to imply that nude models, and strippers are forced to do these jobs by men who hate women. That is just silly. Funny thing, both of those jobs tend to pay very well, and most women in those jobs choose to do them (often because they pay so very well).

So, you denigrate posters here without understanding who they are, and you denigrate every woman working in the fields of nude model or stripper. Perhaps YOU need to re-evaluate these issues.

AAnd, to re-state it, Palin would make a killing of money if she went into nude modeling right now (not that she will, so don’t get YOUR panties all in a bunch).

  93. KayInMaine says:

I’m sure Sarah Palin has thought about posing for Playboy at some point. It’s how she is. In her eyes she’s the most beautiful woman in the world, while to the rest of us….she’s revolting thanks to her world views, ideologies, and actions.

This is the equivalent of creating a new tax which will hurt the poorest and be of greatest benefit for the wealthy, while doing nothing to protect the environment.

Wait and see, the Neocons will be all over this and the ignorant populace of the U.S. will think because the Democrats and Republicans are in agreement that it must be a good thing.
