Yesterday, ThinkProgress and other sites called attention to anti-health care protesters who recently hung up an effigy of Rep. Frank Kratovil (D-MD) outside his district office in Salisbury, MD. The city was also the site of a recent symposium on the dangers of “government-run health care,” sponsored by a group called “Patients First,” a project of the lobbyist-funded Americans for Prosperity. Today, DCCC chairman and Maryland congressman Chris Van Hollen put out a statement condemning hanging effigies of federal lawmakers:
This shocking and despicable act of hate has no place in any debate and Republicans must condemn it.
While there should be a robust exchange of ideas about the best way to reform our broken health insurance system, violent expressions are beyond the boundaries of a respectful and civilized debate. With skyrocketing health care costs hurting more families each day, we cannot afford to have this serious debate sidetracked by outrageous displays like this.
The American people are counting on Republicans to join Democrats in a constructive way to help President Obama bring urgently-needed health insurance reform.

Well, I’m not sure it should be tried as a hate crime but its also not something that’s just for public opinion.
We need of course to protect free speech and the right to protest our leaders, however, there are laws against inciting people to violence. Hanging leaders in effigy means you would like to see them hung in real life. While this guy will no doubt claim he meant something else,…something benign yet symbolic, the fact is that’s not what his display represents. It represents a man being hung by his neck, which under the right circumstances could cause a lynch mob mentality and possibly harm to the congressman.
If this had been a liberal hanging Bush or some republican leader in effigy, in SALISBURY Maryland, then you can rest assured the police would not have taken such a generous attitude towards the display.

Nice sentiment by Van Hollen but you are dealing with an allegedly national political party whose elected representatives have a hard time admitting the president is a natural born US citizen. Utah man’s anti-Bush sticker prompts visit by Secret Service

SALT LAKE CITY — A 19-year-old man was paid a visit by two Secret Service agents after neighbors complained about an anti-President Bush sticker on his car.
The black-and-white, postcard-sized paper printed off a Web site and taped on Derek Kjar’s car had a cartoonish depiction of Bush’s head wearing a crown, with the words “King George — off with his head.”
Stickers of that image are widely available on the Internet.
Lon Garner, special agent in charge of the Secret Service’s Denver field office, confirmed that Kjar was investigated, but said agents had ruled out a threat to the president.
He said it was the agency’s job to investigate all reported threats to figures under Secret Service protection — including Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry.
“We are bound by law,” Garner said. “We take them very seriously, regardless of who the protectee is.”
Still, the visit put a scare in Kjar, and has First Amendment experts crying foul.
“It’s political hyperbole,” said David Hudson, a research attorney with the First Amendment Center. “However distasteful you might think it is, it’s pure political speech.”
Kjar said two agents visited him at his job at a dry-cleaning service and interviewed him for about an hour and 15 minutes. He said they asked him about a broad range of things, including whether he had any ties to terrorist groups or enjoyed reading historical accounts of assassinations.
They also asked Kjar about his friends and family, and even wanted to know how he split up bills with his roommates, he said.
He said the agents asked him to take the paper off his car and give it to them, and didn’t gave it back.
Kjar said he feared the agents were going to “take me away.”

Please, really? I have called you no names have not insulted your intelligence, cursed, YELLED, or said I want to inflict bodily harm to you. I have only asked a question of you, and commented on your obvious happiness of troll stabbing(whatever that is). This is a public forum you are right about that. So I ask again what is economic justice? It is at the top of the page. Under the headings what we are about and what we are fighting for.
