Earlier this week, Sen. George Voinovich (R-OH) told the Columbus Dispatch that the GOP was “being taken over by southerners” and that the party has “too many Jim DeMints and Tom Coburns.” Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) responded today by slamming his colleague for being a “moderate, really wishy-washy” Republican. Vitter decried the influence of “moderates” in his party, saying that the GOP has not stuck to “core conservative values:”
“I’m on the side of conservatives getting back to core conservative values,” said Mr. Vitter, Louisiana Republican and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. “There are a lot of us from the South who hold those values, which I think the party is supposed to be about. We strayed from them in the past few years, and that’s why we performed so badly in the national elections.”
Vitter is an unusual standard-bearer for the “conservative values” wing of the Republican Party. As Steve Benen writes, “[E]very time Vitter mentions the word ‘values,’ it elicits the same response: ‘Aren’t you that ‘family-values’ guy who got caught with prostitutes?’” After confirming his involvement with the “DC Madam” escort service in 2007, Vitter admitted to a “very serious sin” but refused to resign, despite having previously called upon Bill Clinton to resign for marital infidelity.
Pampers or Huggies?
July 29th, 2009 at 6:02 pmI never knew that conspiracies were a core conservative value….
July 29th, 2009 at 6:05 pmValues Vitter?
July 29th, 2009 at 6:06 pmDon’t make me laugh.
If you had any shame, you would have resigned and gone into hiding where you could have enjoyed wearing whatever turns you on with whoever turns you on.
Oh, so he gets caught and now he’s feigning remorse and a promise to change. OK, in ten years if you really have changed your ways you may be considered again for public life. Until then, have some class and STFU like you know you should.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:06 pm“I’m on the side of conservatives getting back to core conservative values.”. . . which are (T?F)
1. No business regulation.
2. Minimum government. Everyone fends for themselves.
3. No minimum wage.
4. Maximum defense spending no matter what.
5. No civil rights laws.
6. Women must be subservient.
There must be more.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:06 pmThis is too easy. My fellow TPers, commence.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:07 pmDid anyone check if Vitter had his fingers crossed behind his back when he said this?
July 29th, 2009 at 6:07 pmThat Depends, Zooey
July 29th, 2009 at 6:08 pmLet me get this straight:
Hiring prostitutes is a conservative value.
Cheating on your wife is a conservative value.
Humiliating your wife in public is a conservative value.
Lying is a conservative value.
Being a hypocrite is a conservative value.
Got it. Thanks, Vitter.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:09 pmRepublican conservative values are NOTHING more than telling others how to live their lives. True values would involve actually taking responsibility for their OWN life choices and paying the consequences for their hypocrisy. Republicans don’t PAY for anything, they feel ‘entitled’ to steal from the poor and make money off the backs of those they scorn the most.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:10 pmVitter and values…Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!
July 29th, 2009 at 6:12 pmTo boil down the above list, the Golden Conservative Value is:
Do as I say, not as I do.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:12 pmIf the core GOP family values now include sexcapades with prostitutes, then I may be interested in changing my “party” affiliation. Thanks for clarifying.

July 29th, 2009 at 6:13 pmDavid Vitter: ‘I’m on the side of conservatives getting back to core conservative values.’

PEACE
July 29th, 2009 at 6:13 pmVitter has a wife whose most subdued dress for the “my husband fcuked prostitutes” news conference was a body-hugging leopard print, but he chose the prostitutes.
**shaking head**
July 29th, 2009 at 6:14 pmWho else thinks the look on his wife’s face deserves heartfelt empathy? You know she won’t get it from Senate Judicial Committee.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:15 pmZooey says:
Whoa, Zooey, I thought you were going to say Golden Showers! Don’t tease Vitter like that!
PEACE
July 29th, 2009 at 6:15 pmI think you are all missing the real point of the story. This appears to be a split in the Republican party. The question is whether these conservatives from the South are going to purge all moderates. If they do, then the Dems may have even more members in Congress. It is easier for the moderate Republicans to become Blue Dogs than to try and effectuate change in the Republican party.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:17 pmWar crimes, stealing from the public coffers, and obstructing government business is not conservative values.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:17 pmSpencer’s mom says:

Huggies stock price plunged 5.00 on this remark.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:26 pmIs there a difference between Conservative values and corporate values? The main conservative value is to maintain conservatives in power using corporate money while appealing to hate and fear of a populus with marginal educations and a economics. The abortion debate is a great example of appealing to those who may have heart-felt beliefs but in the end conservative pols do nothing exploit those fears for votes. They have not made any significant effort to advance that cause only paying lip service. There are many examples of this besides abortion, gun control, immigration, and opposing education and health care reform to name a few. With conservatives it is all about exploitation of voters, diverting them with hate and fear from their real from their real self interest, and servicing their corporate masters. Sometimes you just have to get it off your chest.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:29 pmCore GOP values: Mustard, flag pin, teleprompter, birth certificate.
Judging by the red states you could also add child poverty, substandard education, throngs of uninsured working poor to that list.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:30 pmBBBBBBBhhhhhwwwwwaaaaaaaaHH !! Please someone pass me an oxygen bottle ..I can’s breath from laughing so hard…..BBwwwwwwhhhhhaaaaa…ouch my sides hurt…..gasping for breath….oohh…

Hi Zooey! A Tenn. state Sen. taking advantage of a 22-year old intern is also a conservative value!
July 29th, 2009 at 6:39 pm“I’m on the side of conservatives getting back to core conservative values,” said Mr. Vitter, Louisiana Republican and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. “There are a lot of us from the South who hold those values, which I think the party is supposed to be about. We strayed from them in the past few years, and that’s why we performed so badly in the national elections.”
This is basic coding for his constituency: “We must get back to White rule. No more coloreds in the White House.”
July 29th, 2009 at 6:39 pmDid I mention Tenn. Sen. Paul Stanley has a wife and two children?
TEH FAMILY!
July 29th, 2009 at 6:43 pmGetting back to what? Reagan? The conservatives have always called for small government and expanded its size. They deregulate their country club grifter friends and place more laws on ordinary Americans. The espouse family values while crushing the middle class economically and humping anything that moves. What they really want to get back to is a time when their horse pucky was believed.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:43 pm*
oh really?
:)
July 29th, 2009 at 6:45 pmBaby Vitter thinks he can run around in his pampers, crying: I wah, wah, wanna be the wee, wee, weepublican values wepwesentative. Wah should wee-wee bow to the mainstream moderates. I think I’m going to eat my own pooh now, wah, wah, wanna wahtch me.

What electoral weight does the South hold on the rest of the country, McDiapers? The Southern Strategery has run its course.
Goodbye.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:46 pmVitter is correct, Conservatives do need to get back to their core values if they ever want to regain political power. In order to do that, Vitter should resign immediately.
It’s so easy to point out the hypocrisy and so difficult to make them stop.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:47 pmHmmmmm — I wonder if David Vitter’s “core conservative values” have anything to do with Desitin and talcum powder:

Just saying . . .
July 29th, 2009 at 6:49 pmword is, Stormy Daniels was arrested on domestic assault charges.

the porn star lost her moral high road against Vitter.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:50 pmWell, if by core conservative values he means gettin all liquored up and snackin on some high priced hookers, then I’m all about core values.

Hi, McWars. :)
I guess it wasn’t a sin until he got caught, huh?
These guys are so pent up, that the only way they can get it up is by doing something very very naughty. Oh the thrill. *sigh*
July 29th, 2009 at 6:52 pmSorry to bum the laff party.
This is the vile and pernicious David Vitter, who, as a representative, added, and had passed, an amendment to the “No Child Left Behind” bill allowing the military, through high schools’ records, access to all students’ contact information, for recruiting purposes.
Schools refusing to comply were to lose federal funding and students/parents must opt out of the program. With military-worshipping America, this means
everybody, essentially, is IN the military system.
This guy is not only in need of a carefully powdered butt, he is a clear murderer, not “just” an abuser, of American youth.
Anyone have his military record?
July 29th, 2009 at 6:55 pmYea, I think it’s John Wayne sings the Green Beret anthem.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:58 pm14 core conservative values
July 29th, 2009 at 7:02 pmreally,
Clinton did NOT lie under oath. That is why he was found NOT Guilty. That is why some Republican senators voted NOT GUILTY. A federal judge later specifically ruled that it could not be perjury if he DID lie because it was irrelevant to the Paula Jones case. There is no evidence that Clinton did anything that was not consensual. You probably also believe that Obama was not born in the US.
It is different when people like Vitter, Sanford, Ensign, Craig, Foley, etc. have sex outside of marriage because they campaign that they are superior to Dems on this. Clinton did not claim to be superior to anyone when it came to infidelity.
Why did you not mention Guliani, Gingrich, GHWBush, Reagan, McCain, Eisenhower, etc. having sex outside of marriage.
July 29th, 2009 at 7:12 pmUnusual standard bearer for the “conservative values”
Far from it.
Hypocrisy is a core christian conservative value–why, the goddamb bible itself says that folks will never measure up to Godly standards. So why even try? Sin all you want, just be sure at the end of the day you use that magic Jesus soap to wash up the mess (and lord knows, diaper fetishism can be messy).
July 29th, 2009 at 7:17 pmPlease don’t be so harsh on Vitter. He’s simply for conservative whore-mongering.
July 29th, 2009 at 7:18 pmDavid Vitter:
July 29th, 2009 at 7:19 pm” I only put my ’southern’ diapers on after the madam called me a baby”
really… says:
Bill Clinton lied under oath. He sexually harassed many, many women, he allowed a sexual harassment suit put him on the stand where he lied under oath.
Clinton did not run on a family values platform like all the Republicans that have been caught be unfaithful. The reason why Clinton was still popular is because he did not profess false piety like the Republicans who have been caught. The public will viciously turn on people who claim the higher moral ground and get caught in a sexual peccadillo. This applies to Republicans and Dems, but mostly the evangelicals who talk about family values.
July 29th, 2009 at 7:22 pm***
lora,
i’m sorry for being harsh.
conservative whore mongering
has it’s points.

July 29th, 2009 at 7:28 pmto really stupid,
This thread isn’t about Bill Clinton, and no one here has been calling him a martyr. The thread is about
G(roup)O(f)P(erverts) hypocrisy and how many of those who called for Clinton’s resignation and/or tried to impeach him have been found to be adulterers themselves.
Despite all the GOP fixation on Whitewater and then Monica, Clinton, in fact, handled his business well and left the presidency with a budget surplus, which Bush and company quickly turned into a record deficit.
really stupid.. says:
July 29th, 2009 at 7:29 pmBill Clinton lied under oath. He sexually harassed many, many women, he allowed a sexual harassment suit put him on the stand where he lied under oath. He could have and should have settled the suit.
Bill Clinton wasn’t impeached because of infidelity, he was impeached because he couldn’t handle his business. Bill Clinton is no martyr.
“We strayed from them in the past few years, and that’s why we performed so badly in the national elections.”
Why, thank you, Captain Obvious!

July 29th, 2009 at 7:37 pmYou can get impeached for that? Since when?
July 29th, 2009 at 7:39 pm“I’m on the side of conservatives getting back to core conservative values,”
Oh, you mean like f**king around on your wife with hookers and Argentian mistresses and staffers and 22 year-old interns–then having your buddies at “C” Street cover up for you and your parents pay off the mistress? Yeah, that’s the Rethuglican, conservative values we all love and aspire to. Nice try, Vitter.
July 29th, 2009 at 7:40 pmVitter’s was cheered by his fellow Republicans for his conduct with the prostitute so I guess voters don’t see a problem and just might vote for him. Now Vitters has two Wendy’s as one is his wife and the other his prostitute. Notice how Mrs. Vitter even started dressing like Wendy the prostitute. I guess when you give the church over 100,000 in Government support, even the Pastor see’s no problem.
July 29th, 2009 at 7:43 pmEven the meaning of conservative has to keep up with progress. The thugs are still living in the revolutionary ages. Vitter’s idea of conservative is pre-American Revolution. Now he faces that fact every day, Poor Baby!
July 29th, 2009 at 8:34 pmIt looks like, if the Thugcanzi can’t have the moral authority they will shoot for the immoral authority.
July 29th, 2009 at 8:36 pmThey bragged about their “moral majority” and now they are nothing but an immoral minority.
July 29th, 2009 at 8:40 pmAre rank shamelessness and hypocrisy core conservative values?
July 29th, 2009 at 8:44 pmCore conservative values? That means adultery because these repugs keep getting caught and yet they keep doing it. Moral values my ass. Their motto should be “hypocrite believe in it”
July 29th, 2009 at 9:10 pmLet’s see what KKKonservanzis have for conservanazi values.
Adultery. Closeted homosexuality. Lying. Cheating. Stealing. Racism.
I’m sure I left a few out.
David Vitter is the epitomy of good christian KKKonservanazi republiKKKan values. He has some sense of loyalty. He was banging a hooker that had the same name as his wife. That counts for something, doesn’t it? ;)
“WHEN FASCISM COMES TO AMERICA, IT WILL BE WRAPPED IN THE FLAG CARRYING A CROSS.” Sinclair Lewis.
July 29th, 2009 at 9:20 pm“core conservative values?” For eight years under the Bush-Republican regime, we were treated to torture, treason and tyranny, core conservative values. Until Republicans start repudiating Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld and their vile policies, the GOP will continue to flounder and sink further in the minds of most voters.
July 29th, 2009 at 9:32 pmYes. Do you even need an answer to that question?
marlow says:
July 29th, 2009 at 9:33 pmAre rank shamelessness and hypocrisy core conservative values?
If you’re a Senator or Representative and you get caught in an infidelity, it should be a private matter for you and you family.
Unless your a Senator or Representative that preaches the importance of ‘family values’.
In that case, you should resign due to the hypocrisy.
July 29th, 2009 at 9:33 pmGee, backup, there may be hope for you yet.
July 29th, 2009 at 9:50 pmBackup is making….

what, b-cup? No “on the other hand” this time?
Maybe you are making progress.
July 29th, 2009 at 10:04 pmSenator David Vitter is a g*dd*mn*d f**king liar. He is a criminal patron of illegal prostitutes. He is a hypocrite of the highest order. He is no more religious than a praying mantis.
This story is good for one thing only–a good, long belly laugh, at Senator Bitter’s expense.
ha ha
July 29th, 2009 at 11:05 pmLike Fu(king everything in your kitchen but the cantaloupe, Vitter?
Would that represent conservative values?
No? A good, solid conservative would grab the fruit by flesh and get giddy with it.
Hows ’bout the loaf of bread, Dave?
July 29th, 2009 at 11:34 pm“There are a lot of us from the South who hold those values, which I think the party is supposed to be about.”
Yes… and every time Vitter puts this idea forth, he should be reminded that the Southern Republican Party gained in membership when Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act and all the racist Democrats switched parties. The election of a Black President is why Southern Republicans are making headlines again. Make no mistake.
July 29th, 2009 at 11:52 pmBut he does value diapers and whore-mongering.

July 30th, 2009 at 1:27 amIt is the Diaper Dave’s that have much to do with the poor opinions of our Gov’t and our nation.
What exactly has Sen David Vitter done for America since he has been in Congress. What positive measurres can one point to Vitter for accomplishing? Other than picking up a pay check and using his tax payer funded health care. I didn’t realize our funded health care covers V.D..
July 30th, 2009 at 3:15 amTo do this, you will need to tell your comrades to keep it in their pants to start with.
July 30th, 2009 at 10:38 amI’m curious, what exactly was Vitter doing after he got into those diapers?
What was that scenario all about?
I want the full story.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:28 amMaybe someone can ask for more details at his next press conference.
Conservative values, this guy makes me laugh.
Real Conservative Values=
Not spending more than you earn (as applied to government)
State’s Rights, with the main role of the Federal Government being policing the States from passing Unconsititutional Laws and violating the unalienable rights of the citizenry, maintaining a standing Army and Navy, protecting the privacy of the individual, diplomacy with foreign nations
Limiting the taxing power of the Federal Government to Constitutional standards
Peace, commerce and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none
Agriculture, manufacturing, commerce and navigation, the four pillars of our prosperity, are the most thriving when left most free to individual enterprise
The neoconservatives in Washington have violated all these principles and are not true conservatives in any sense of the word.

You left out promoting the general wellfare which is in the very preamble to the constitution if you disagree with that say so directly.
Limiting the taxing power of the Federal Government to Constitutional standards
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Impractical since the taxing power of congress is written in broad principles not specifics. Article 1 Secton 8 says congress can levy taxes to PROVIDE FOR THE GENERAL WELLFARE. That clearly is a democratic line to be drawn and redrawn. Cons keep pretending they can say any spending they dont like is unconstitutional with the argument you make and it is frankly ludicrous.
Agriculture, manufacturing, commerce and navigation, the four pillars of our prosperity, are the most thriving when left most free to individual enterprise
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
No they arent. That is the shiny object the rightwing spins to hypnotize the gullible magpies of their base to use them. There has never BEEN a real free market and the closer we come to it the bigger the disaster. Like the savings and Loan scandal and the mortgage meltdown also the great depression. All along our economy has been based largely on public cost turned into private profit. It is the pile they sell but REAL large business and Government officials dont buy into it for a minute. Our country has always had socialism for the rich and they always have socialized risk while privitizing the profit. It SOUNDS good if you dont know what you are talking about but its snake oil. Our businesses work best with strong regulation to reign in greed and predation on the poor. Remember that Ford marketed the Pinto KNOWING it would kill people and someone built a housing project on a toxic waste dump called Love Canal.
The neoconservatives in Washington have violated all these principles and are not true conservatives in any sense of the word.

I agree they have sullied the decent name of conservative. I like to think of them as radical statists

Incorrect. Yes he did lie under oath, and Congress was right to impeach him. Clinton specifically made a deal after leaving office in order to avoid further prosecution where he admitted in a special address that he did lie when asked about his possible infidelities.
