Tancredo: Sotomayor Pals Around With Mexican Separatists

tancredoDoubling-down on his previous claim that Justice-to-be Sonia Sotomayor is a member of the “Latino KKK,” nativist former Congressman and presidential candidate Tom Tancredo (R-CO) published a column yesterday suggesting that she supports an imaginary movement of Mexican-Americans planning to wage civil war against the United States:

The last thing the Democrats want is for the American people to know about the National Council of La Raza, their radical agenda and Sotomayor’s association with the group.

Sotomayor is a member of La Raza and her comments about “Wise Latinas” being superior to white men appeared in the La Raza Law Journal. The National Council of La Raza bills itself as “the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States” who works through “its network of nearly 300 affiliated community-based organizations.”

Among these affiliates are several chapters of the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (Chicano Student Movement of Aztlán) who La Raza helps fund. Aztlán is what radical “Mechistas”—as they refer to themselves on La Raza’s website—call the American Southwest, which they claim still belongs to Mexico. Their slogan is “Por La Raza todo, Fuera de La Raza nada” meaning “For the Race everything, outside the Race nothing.” One chapter says on La Raza’s site that their mission is “empowerment of our gente and the liberation of Aztlán.”

For starters, Tancredo offers no explanation for his belief that Sotomayor, who is Puerto Rican, would somehow find common cause with Mexican-American separatists.  Mr. Tancredo may be unaware of this fact, but Puerto Rico is not part of Mexico.

Moreover, Tancredo’s claim that America is threatened by Mexican-Americans eager to start a second civil war is simply absurd hate speech.  According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Aztlán libel is based on a radical document published in 1969, which called on Mexican-Americans to “reclaim the land of their birth” and unite to fight “oppression, exploitation and racism.”  Although this document is nothing more than “a relic of the counterculture of the 1960s,”  nativist hate groups have seized upon it as a supposed “founding document of a bona fide conspiracy endorsed and backed by Mexico and, in some versions, by most Mexican Americans.”

For Tancredo, however, no theory is too bizarre, so long as it bolsters his deep-seated hatred of people who don’t look like him.

Designated minority victim groups are free to promote their anti-white racist agenda, while any whites who fight back are playing “racial politics.”

And yet he fails to see how he is playing “racial politics” just like the people he decries.

Just look at that face in the picture. “Proud to be racist.”

    ’nuff said.

  7. Whenwillthisnightmareend says:

Obviously, for Tancredo and others like him, the only relevant point is white is white, black is black, latino is latino, there is no commonality, only division. And if there were no white/black/latino issue, it would be some other division, such as catholic/ baptist/ jewish, and on and on. In short, statements like this prove that he is the very definition of a racist. For example, it is so clear that just because Sotomayor speaks spanish, regardless of any unwarranted defense she may provide, she must be a Mexican separist, and by the way, why not a basque separatist, and why not some cuban bent on exporting communist revolution. SHE’S GOT A LOT OF SPLAININ TO DO.

Perhaps the most despicable thing about him, and other republican politicians who are disseminating this bull, they, themselves can’t possibly believe this shit. They are only spreading it to the ignorant boobs who make up their base. You can tell them anything; they don’t even have the ability to know (or even care) that they are being lied to. To them it’s GOD, Country, and GUNS. And Tancredo knows that.

A search of “liberation on the NCLR site produces NO RESULT.
A search of “liberty” produces 8 results
A search of “Aztlan” produces ONE mention of the word:

    1. Statement of Raul Yzaguirre, NCLR President on La Voz De Aztlan (News).

From which the following is excerpted:

Washington, DC – Recently the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) became aware of a website and other information that is being circulated on the Internet by La Voz de Aztlan. The phrases the site frequently uses, “La Raza de Aztlan” or “La Raza,” are generic terms that many use to refer to Mexican American people in this country. NCLR has no connection whatsoever to the website or its sponsoring group.

I am issuing this somewhat unusual statement because, after a cursory review of the website, I found it to be full of reprehensible and bigoted references toward a number of communities – in particular, to the Jewish American community. No responsible Latino organization or leader of my acquaintance agrees with the misinformation being dispensed on the site, nor do I know of any who concur with the grotesque stereotypes that appear in many of its alleged “articles.”

Tancredo isn’t just ’spinning’, or suing spurious logic, he’s just LYING (what a shock!).

  12. 5th Estate says:

Correction: Tancredo isn’t just ’spinning’, or using spurious logic, he’s just LYING (what a shock!).

Though he;s no longer in office, he is personally and professionally committed to the GOP, and appears in the media to opine on the GOP’s behalf. If the MSM picks up this story–which they should because the Sotomayor conformation is important—which among them will take the two minutes I just took to prove that Tancredo is a liar? MSNBC? The LA Times?
Which will actually SAY he’s a LIAR? None of them, I’ll bet.

  18. Spencer's mom says:

Okay, admittedly I’ve been naive. I thought that, with the huge election of a minority to the office of POTUS, we as a nation would keep racism and bigotry on the down low and attack the President on his policies, his cabinet, his choice of words, whatever the GNOP thought they could use against him to regain power.

Never in my wildest dreams did I believe that this nation would take long-held ignorant racism out of the closet and wear it proudly, showing off the hatred of “other” with such gusto, that a national party would not only embrace the racism but would use it as their platform, and with the national media fully complying by reporting without condemning.

I am not in any way proud of what this nation has become, and I hate the GNOP even more for creating a situation where I feel this way.

Lou Dobbs still has not proven that his wife is a legal citizen of the United States of America. We are waiting for the vault copy of her American birth certificate, Lou! Wait you mean people actually believe that Mexicans immigrate here not to send money back to families in Mexico but lay seeds for a war?

Wow these guys are loons. I lived in the orange counties of Florida where many Mexicans work, and they only want to make some kind of cash so they can support their family, never saying anything bad about this country. Granted that could be form just fear of being turned on.

Have they stopped to think that if they, somehow they do manage to take the southwest, that with the will lose its value with a United States Seal?

I don’t think we should limit that to Mexican-Americans. I think everyone should tell him how offensive and foolish this is.

  27. larkohio says:

Has this man ever noticed that Mexico is our neighbor to the south? He is aware that Hispanic people have lived in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Arizona since before the American revolution, right? America is a land of many races and religions, we are a diverse people Tom, Hispanics are us, and they aren’t scary!

  29. wolfsinger says:

This is what the GOP has become. Shrill. Violent. Isolated. Unhinged. De-evolving on a national scale into a dank and hideous intelligence.

Ralph the wonder llama is right when he say stop polluting (GOP) discourse(?) with fact and logic, emphasis mine. GOP discourse is truly an oxymoron if there ever was one.

It is no longer about “thinking” with today’s Republicans and Christian Values Conservatives. They are tossing away any remnants of logic and civility daily. They do not seem able to see beyond the ends of their angry white noses.

Having no fear of their hypocrisies revealed, over and over again, and with their God in their pocket, they seem quite willing to use any means possible to inflict their “vision” of America on the rest of us.

  30. delafield says:

Tancredo’s claim that America is threatened by Mexican-Americans eager to start a second civil war is simply absurd hate speech.

If there is a 2nd civil war, the United States should go on another “Sherman’s March” through all the sessionist Slave States. Only this time, let’s not be as civil as Sherman.

  31. tom says:

Congress should seriously consider passing legislation to enable nut-sacks like Tancredo to individually secede from the United States. It is very apparent that he is unhappy with our country and it would be very humane to allow him to withdraw from our Union.

I am thinking that such a law could set aside a couple thousand acres in Alabama to which such “seceded individuals” could relocate. Then, they could put a big bubble around themselves — no TV other than FoxSnooze; nothing but right-wing rant-radio on the airwaves; etc.

I can think of a l-o-o-o-o-ng list of candidates to inhabit this “bubble” . . . starting with Bailin’ Failin’ Palin, Darth Cheney (and his whole brood), Little Seanie Vanity and a good share of the republican members of Congress.

  32. tom says:

. . . and, in the absence of such an “individual secession” law, we should just all shun lunatics such as Tancredo.

Obama’s support has been a mile wide and an inch deep. If he cannot deliver on expectations–and he cannot–his support will erode swiftly and irretrievably.

More and more I’m believing Obama’s election was and is mainly cosmetic, designed to 1) alleviate some of the international embarrassment of endemic USer racism, 2) provide a scapegoat to absorb all the responsibility for the past 30 years of crypto-fascism, and 3) to prepare the electorate for the next Bush.

(Tancredo and his birther and racist friends are not going to quit until they croak, and even when they arrive in Hell, they’ll probably annoy Lucifer to the point where he has to send them off to a very dark, very cold place. Their strategy:

If they could bring the public race attitude back to the 1950’s, they will surely win in ‘12.

My vote for Obama had nothing to do with guilt, because after 8 years of Dumbya Bush, I would have voted for whoever the Democrat candidate was. I also liked Obama for his intelligence–not just because we are alums of the same university. Moreover, although I don’t dislike McCain, the idea of Sarah Palin one 72-year cancer survivor’s heartbeat away from the Presidency was truly frightening. McCain’s attempt to capture some disgruntled Hillary voters with Bible spice was an absymal failure, as the former Miss Wasila is an airhead who stands for none of the rights most women support.

    conservative guy says:
#58, Obama got the guilty white vote. Even if Obama got every minority vote he had to have some guilty white votes to win.

  82. Lora says:

You forgot to mention former first dude, Todd Palin, a member of the Alaska independence movement.

    Xisithrus says:
Bad bad Sotomayor dont you know its only okay if you pal around with the seperatists like goobernor (R)Rick Perry

  83. WillWrite4Food says:

And Virgil Goode is there, too? Is this a Klan meeting or what?

  84. osage says:

Is there any so-called minority voting bloc in American that will vote for Republicans in 2010? African Americans? Hispanics? Gays? Two-headed albino Aborigines?

  85. TrueLiberty says:

McCain was going to be Gore’s running mate and backed out at the eleventh hour. McCain is a supporter of LaRaza, despite their radical agenda, to get Latino votes in his area, which is heavily latino.

Cap and trade is Corporatist concept which further shifts the wealth of the world away from the poorest and into the pockets of the wealthiest. If you listen to and believe the rhetoric without researching what is the truth, you are a pawn of Corporatism whether you vote Republican or Democrat.

There are good men/women left in the Democratic party, McKinney, Kucinich, Gravel, then there are the statist like Clinton and Obama who could have easily run as Republicans with their politics (globalism, foreign policy, fiscal policy, privacy policy, Constitutional policy). Just because they say they are pro-gay marriage doesn’t make their other policies any less fascist than George W.

  86. EugeneDebs says:

    TrueLiberty says:

LaRaza is a civil rights group. Give the hysteria pushed by the right a rest. Yeah I know cap and trade was originally the conservative position. If politics is the art of the possible it is what is possible. If YOU know how to get a Kucinch elected and REAL progressive wholesale changes made then let us in on the secret or explain why your position isnt letting the perfect get in the way of, well at least something that MIGHT help and all we CAN get. I am with you overall. I am a green. I left the Democratic party when they put Joe Lieberman on the ticket as VP. Dont you think that if we elect someone slightly left and he gets some things done in the end we have a better chance for a Kucinich or Feingold down the road than if the somewhat, slightly to the left considering the spectrum Obama is elected then we assue he gets NOTHING done by attacking his policies and he gets NOTHING done to help?

Again. If YOU know a way to get a REAL lefty Like Kucinich or McKinney eleted next election let me know I will sign up tomorrow
