Malkin Calls Right-Wing Tea Party Movement A ‘Counter-Insurgency’

This morning, right-wing blogger Michelle Malkin joined the ABC roundtable on This Week with George Stephanopoulos. Asked what the conservative opposition strategy is going to be this coming month while Congress is in recess, Malkin said there is a growing “tea party movement — these counterinsurgencies amongst taxpayer rights groups” — that is fomenting opposition to Obama’s health care plan.

Malkin claimed the Obama administration has “vastly underestimated just how grassroots this movement is.” Lawmakers are going to face “townhalls-gone-wild,” she added. Watch it:

The term “counter-insurgencies” does reveal the mentality of conservatives in opposition to Obama. Like Bill Kristol has said, the right wing is bluntly stating that it is going “for the kill.” Malkin has previously declare her hope that Obama fails.

As ThinkProgress has documented, these tea parties may indeed be “counter-insurgencies,” but they are hardly “grassroots” movements. Corporate lobbyists — led by Dick Armey’s FreedomWorks and Tim Phillips’ Americans for Prosperity organizations — have staffed and funded these gatherings. (They are doing so again.) The Fox News network, including Malkin’s frequent appearances, has taken the lead in publicizing and promoting the events among its right-wing base.

The tea-partiers have already proved that they can create a “townhalls-gone-wild” effect and are willing to demonstrate the violent qualities of an insurgency. Recently, Republican congressman Mike Castle (R-DE) faced down angry right activists who hijacked a townhall gathering by spouting crazy conspiracy theories. Right-wing protesters surrounded Rep. Tim Bishop (D) in New York and forced police officers to have to escort him to his car for safety. And anti-health care protesters hung an effigy of Rep. Frank Kratovil (D) in Maryland.

Update Crooks & Liars has video of Bill Maher mocking Malkin's new book.

Jeezus effin Christ, why is Michelle Malkin on “This Week”?

    – - The right wing no longer has many reasonable or sensible spokespeople so the Sunday morning talk shows are reduced to scraping the dregs of the lunatic fringe Right, hence Michelle Malkin.

  9. BaPo says:

Malkin was relatively quiet during the Cheney years but has re-upped with President Obama. Actually, she and the entire bunch oh hate-mongering talkers should thank him for giving them such full employment. Unfortunately, a progressive America is these folks’ best friend.

While I find Michelle Malkin offensive in the extreme and cringe at whatever legitimacy being on “This Week” will give the wingnuts favorite anchor baby I do hope that the groups who support healthcare reform are paying attention and will have robust counter demonstrations and local citizens asking questions wherever the teabaggers may show up.

It’s a great point. They choose words on the right not for what they strictly mean, but for the emotional resonance they carry. That’s why they are desperately trying to convince people that “fascism” is actually a liberal ideology — because they know it carries negative connotations. they don’t really care what defines fascism; they just know it’s bad, so it must be leftist.

“Counter-insurgency” implies a reaction to a movement. Thus, they see themselves as simply countering a (presumably illegitimate) “insurgency” that threatens their precious bodily fluids. It gives them some form of moral comfort, the belief that everything would be fine if the leftists hadn’t mounted their “insurgency” by electing, y’know… a black man.

I always enjoy George’s “Sunday Funnies” segment. This morning, the “Sunday Funnies” began during the panel discussion with the addition of Shelley (The Merkin) Malkin. Indeed, it was funny to see her virtually ignored and discounted by everyone else around the table. George would politely ask her for her opinion on a topic; she would spew out her usual talking-point drivel; and then the adults in the room would resume their conversation as if she weren’t even there.

Actually, although an earlier poster derided her presence on George’s show this morning, I think this is a brilliant, subtle move to undermine the right-wingers and expose their utter uselessness. It was starkly clear that Little Shelley is totally clueless and purely negative in her thinking. She doesn’t have an original idea of her own and, yet, she is held up as an A-list conservative pundit.

I would like to see George extend this strategy in future weeks. Personally, I think it would be hilarious to have Bailin’ Failin’ Palin, Little Seanie Vanity, John (”Got Milk?”} Bolton sitting in the Malkin chair.

The counter-insurgency is merely an illusion of opposition. Now that the disruption tactics have been exposed, the tea baggers and fake protesters lose credibility. It will be unpleasant when these people are arrested and face criminal charges for disorderly conduct. The protests will be traced back to the astroturfing organizations and I would hope they become the target of an ambitious State’s Attorney or US Attorney. This tactic has already been publicly exposed so these organizations will have to back off. The US Attorney General will direct the US Attorneys to begin investigations. When the group is a target of an FBI and grand jury investigation, they will have to disentangle themselves from the fringe groups.

  20. Wayne A. Schneider says:

The biggest mistake television news has made is in giving credence to the idea that “you have to present both sides of the story”, as if the objective truth lies somewhere in the middle of what we hear from liberals and conservatives. That is flat out wrong. It is easily demonstrable that the right wing (particularly opinionists like Malkin) does not use the truth to make its case, so why should their opinion matter to those interested in the facts?

In general, when does the left find itself in agreement with the right? When the right bases its opinion on the truth, and not some crazy, unworkabale, un-American ideology.

Michelle Malkin does not belong on any television program intended to present itself as News.

  21. katy says:

i didn’t watch it all, but i did notice that malkin was not exactly given free reign there… she got some fact checking…

  22. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Malkin claimed the Obama administration has “vastly underestimated just how grassroots this movement is.”

Except, Michelle, they are not really “grassroots” movements if they are being organized by K-Street lobbyists.

  23. kats says:

LOL, MM was totally ignored by the other panelists at the round table. She must have gotten on because she has a new “comic book” out, which was also virtually ignored. She looked and acted totally stupid on the panel. If anyone noticed her body language, she was stiff as a board in her chair, I’m sure she knew what the others were thinking.

  24. Midland says:

Remember, from the Winger point of view, there is no legitimate opposition, so Obama’s victory is an insurgency, or coup-de-etat, if they dared to speak French. They are trying to take back America from evil-doers, which is why they feel no need to be polite, tolerant, etc., or even to tell the truth in public.

  27. Shayne says:

Actually the one point Malkin made was that extending unemployment would encourage the “slackers” to not look for work. The other woman told her that may be true if there were jobs to go to but there aren’t. And the guys mentioned that every time there is a job notice the employer is swamped with applicants. I just hope the unemployed heard Malkin imply they’d rather do nothing. Those people should start an insurgency against this maniac for insulting them all.

  28. Shayne says:

Oh to be a fly on the wall to see how they treated her when the cameras weren’t on them. I hope they acted less professionally then.

Wait, weren’t they referring to themselves as “insurgents” just a few short months ago?

So which is it? Are you the insurgents or the counter-insurgents? Or does that fact that you claim both simply indicative of the leaderless circular firing squad clusterfcuk that is today’s GNOP, aka the White Wing.

    PEACE

  31. Purple State says:

Let’s get something clear: the “tea party” movement has become grassroots, especially since the GOP tried to make it their own idea.

The first set of parties WAS astro-turf. Fox covered it, and the GOPs attended. The second group, however, was not, as it is clear these branded parties are NOT what the GOP wish to be identified with. Perhaps it had to do with the fact they were done on July 4th, but this is a fringe rebellion and not one the GOP is aligning itself with.

I do hope that Malkin seizes leadership in these parties. Especially since she’s the looniest of them all.

  34. dhairston says:

I thought it was pretty idiotic when she brought up the unemployment extension argument and when shot down her only retort was a childish “it came from a Clinton administration official…” as if that should somehow quiet the George and the roundtable. If you applied the same logic to the health care debate, one would think that it would be appropriate to deny health care to people because in doing so, that would be more motivated to stay healthy.

I most certainly hope that the rest of the world watching was able to see the intellectual lightweight being sent back to the kids table. However, it is also funny to see the left in a position to actually plead for George Will to be brought back on the air.

I did, although the fact that “victoria” was never taught about paragraphs made it tricky. I am bemused when Righties suddenly express concern about the Constitution–the same people silent as the tomb during the Bush/Cheney efforts to gut it completely.

A couple of years ago I expressed the opinion that Barack Obama could not be elected because this country wasn’t ready for a Black president. I got it partly right. He was elected, but this country still isn’t ready for a Black president. Racism runs too deeply here.

Counter-insurgencies or not grassroots movement or not the right wing has effectively taken the spot light to relay their blatant lies to the people of America and they seem to be buying the crap. What is surprising is the inability and lack of strategy of the democratic party to portray their message as effectively as the republican portrayal of their lies. Every issue proposed by the democratic party to forward their agendas after resoundingly winning the elections has been met with a forceful rebuttal by the opposition party. The lack of the people to give their elected officials to run the government by supporting the constant barrage of lies promulgated by the likes of Michelle Malkin, Bill Crystal and their likes is astounding.

    …when they’re in high school.
Yep, they put ‘I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul” under their yearbook pictures.
Are you a subsistence farmer? Then you’re a bit on your way to self-sufficiency.
Beyond that, you rely nearly totally on people deciding to give you a job, giving you services for a reasonable price.
Your average rightie viewsa job as their right. There’s no dependency there! I’ve EARNED my money. It’s a natural and inevitable result of being a superior entity.
Work for a while as a freelancer and see how ‘absolute’ earning money. Work on a large project where the client dicks you around for months on payment, or simply goes under–and you not only learn how contingent ‘earning’ is, you learn a lot about self-sufficiency–like how it doesn’t exist. Run a small business and you’ll realize how dependent you are on everybody else. Nobody has to order your stuff, nobody has to use your services. The money you get is a vast series of co-operations with other people.

More often thsn not the wingnut either has worked for big corporations all their life–of Mommy and Daddy are still paying for everything. They’re able to act as if the job they’ve got is a theological given, an outward proof of their inward virtue, They’re self-sufficient–because somebody has decided to pay them for their work. Because they get paid, they’re the master of their fate, captain of their souls, and don’t need anybody in the whole world!

The people who are responsible for subverting the Constitution were Nixon and George w. Bush, both of whom were Republicans. They wilfully ignored the Constitution and treated their position as akin to a monarchy not subject to any laws. Nixon was impeached and had the Congress known about all of the Bush secrets, he would have been impeached. The only people who are trying to destroy the country are the Republicans who have adopted a slash and burn political strategy. They are knee jerk reactionaries who are opposed to anything the Dems propose. The Republicans have abased themselves with questionable morals, political views and association with the radical fringe. The party is heading further right much like they did in 1964. That means that the moderate Republicans will distance themselves from the party rather than sign on to support people and positions they disdain. You better get used to Obama being your president because he will be around for a long time and will be reelected in 2012. And this is all courtesy of the Republican party who made it possible for a black man to get elected.

Stirring people into violent action like this is something that the public will take out on the Republicans. Especially when it is shown that the ringleaders were paid Republican staffers, as happened in Miami.

When I asked what Fox News show he heard some of his inane rantings from, he replied that he had read about it. When I asked WHERE he had read IT, I received the same response that has been typical, and that is no response at all. I am by no means a literal giant but can at least give several sources when I am asked where I read something. My point is this, from now on I am going to make these goats (not smart enough to be sheep) to give an account of WHERE they are getting their information. 139. TrueLiberty says:

Alecto, the local Liberal Party on Long Island gathered up the names of over 700 citizens in Bishop’s district in Suffolk County. The petition was pleading with Mr. Bishop to support the effort to repeal the Patriot Act.

Mr. Bishop’s office formally announced to us that he was in favor of the Patriot Act and would not vote for any house resolution repealing it.

Many fine people in the house were duped into signing the first Patriot Act. They didn’t get a chance to read it, it is a long document and a tragic event had just happened. After reading the Act, and seeing how heinous and unPatriotic it truly is, only the good men and women in the house cried out to repeal this Act.

You know not of what you speak concerning Mr. Bishop’s politics. He also was in favor of the Bush bailouts.

  140. TrueLiberty says:

    Eugene Debs,

The article was a joint effort by no fewer than 9 people. We give permission to anyone who wants to use it as long as they don’t make any changes. Nonetheless, even if someone posted it here who did not write it, what is the point you are trying to make?

Truth is truth. Zooey has adopted a political stance of our agricultural system right out of the Mussolini/Hitler playbook, yet likes to call himself a Liberal.

This George Soros funded website is clearly not a place of the interchange of ideas. It is not a place where liberals discuss issues and inform each other. It is a place of mud slinging and insults. This web site is the mouthpiece of the Democratic Party. Blindly following any party is a sort of extremism that ushered in Communist Russia and China and National Socialist Italy and Germany.

I don’t believe the foul-mouthed writers here would know what to do on issues where Democrats disagreed. It seems they have lost the ability to discern and are only capable of following the party, even when said party flips 180 degrees on a political position.

The other interesting thing here is voting down someone. Share your opinion here as long as it matches mine!!!

There’s no room for free thought. We must follow the party line.

  141. TrueLiberty says:

Alecto, you used many nasty adjectives in front of George W. Bush’s name and I can’t say that I don’t understand your animosity towards him. He did many unfathomable acts of tyranny while in office. George W. is most certainly treasonous. So what about the Democrats in Congress who voted for it? Do they get called the same adjectives by you? Or are they OK guys anyway?

    Wayne A. Scheider,

Thank you for disagreeing with me in an intelligent, respectful and polite fashion. You are a gentleman, unlike others who write here. We have looked into the underlying principles concerning this house resolution. Believe me, Monsanto doesn’t spend millions of dollars lobbying for stuff like this for the benefit of mankind.

The agenda of CODEX, GMO foods and government interference with small farming is a problem. You may change your mind if you speak with the lawyers representing the small farming community and speaking to organic farmers directly.

  145. LiberalLinebacker says:

Is Ralph The Wonder Llama a Monty Python reference?

I agree 99% with TrueLiberty. Coming from a big farming state and understanding what the likes of Monsanto has done to this country, you can not take these HRs too lightly.

But I wouldn’t call zooey a fascist just because he agrees with a single piece of fascist agenda. I also do not believe that the terms Conservative, Liberal are definitive enough. Liberalism and Conservatism pre ’50s is radically different from today’s definition.

I voted TrueLiberty up because he is sharing information that is valid.

  146. LiberalLinebacker says:

I don’t get this whole teabagger crap. A grassroots bipartisan effort that has as many Libertarians as Republicans is suddenly co-opted by the stinking Neocons?

They can’t even come up with their own original ideas. The media trying to portray this as a Republican “thang”, is way off base. I witnessed many college kids from the local university who are very vocal Democrats attend one of these outings.

  147. Jacktheliberal says:

I don’t know how you guys started talking about a farming bill, but I wouldn’t let Zooey, Wonder Llama, Eugene Debs get under your skin. They gotta be right wing plants to make liberals look biased, crude and ignorant.

  148. Jacktheliberal says:

I can relate liblinebacker. I know as many pissed off Democrat types as i do Republicans when it comes to the Bush variety of bailouts and Obama’s round 2 of unconstitutional bailouts.

Do people really think only Republicans are pissed off at our deficit spending? I am a hardcore Democrat and I am very pissed off.

The point TrueLiberty makes about following the party line is so very true.

If you agree with either of the following sentences:

All Democrats are good, all Republicans are bad OR All Republicans are good, all Democrats are bad

You are totally mind-controlled and delusional, if you buy into this philosophy you will never be able to think rationally about the problems facing this nation

  149. Jacktheliberal says:

So if you were 1 of 9 individuals who wrote an article, you can’t post it in a stupid blogroom like this because it is plagiarism? The lack of logic here is staggering

Get real Debs and others…almost all the comments I see you writing are not original ideas, just recycled ideas spoon fed to you by the corporate controlled media

Secondly, I cannot read a blog that “voted down” an entry they don’t agree with, as they’ll probably “vote-down” this won.

  151. LeeHope says:

I am really at a loss for words as to why ABC News decided it was time to have one of these Right-wing lunatics on as part of their “round table” of so-called journalists on their Sunday morning program? I then remember that George Stephanopoulos’ show is just as good a show as any on Fox News to highlight Ms. Malkin given his one foot into the “fringe-group” association that he was in when he and his network did an ambush job on candidate Obama in what was supposed to be a debate against Hillary Clinton. I still don’t however understand the reasoning behind having Malkin on this show in the first place on Sunday morning? Was it to attempt to legitimize this crazy, or was it an attempt to berate her logic, if any? At any rate what she offered to the show and how many of the viewers that were left after she opened her mouth was not helpful…at either eductaing the public or even ratings.

  152. nan4tjn says:

EugeneDebs you really are a nasty person!

There is no debate here at all just nasty name calling.
My post about record numbers of military re-enlisting is fact, they are not being forced to re-enlist they are doing it because they are fighting a just cause. It is a GREAT thing that Saddam is out of power millions of Iraqi people are now free, the Kurds don’t have to be afraid didn’t you see the mass graves?
The reason we are in Iraq is because of WMD’s the UN passed 17 resolutions (broke every one how many chances do we give him?) Terrorists were training in Iraq too.
You people really make me sick you don’t think! Saddam used WMD’s bio. and chem. weapons on his own people! He had them and wouldn’t let anyone see that he got rid of them.
I pray for you people so filled with hate.

  153. nan4tjn says:

    Jacktheliberal you are SO right!

The price of EVERYTHING is going up up up while people are losing their jobs and homes. I don’t know who got a tax cut but my family surely didn’t and we are lower middle class. My husband works his behind off, and supports our family 2 kids and my mom. He has worked very hard for what we have but may end up losing it because he may not have a job next week.
Bailouts aren’t the answer Reagan and Clinton had it right lower taxes means more jobs.
