Beck: ‘Just one lunatic like Timothy McVeigh could ruin everything.’

Among high-profile media pundits, Glenn Beck has used some of the most divisive language when speaking about President Obama. Just last week he called Obama a “racist” who “hates white people.” But yesterday on his Fox News show, an unusually subdued Beck turned down his hostility to deliver a message, in an apparent attempt to insulate himself, saying the interaction needs to be “respectful, polite, forceful and peaceful” because “one lunatic like Timothy McVeigh could ruin everything”:

BECK: If anyone thinks that it would be a good idea to turn violent, think again. It would destroy the Republic. They have awakened a sleeping giant. But just one lunatic like Timothy McVeigh could ruin everything that everyone has worked so hard for. Because these people in Washington won’t pass up the use of an emergency. Look how the media ran with the abortion doctor killing. They tried to pin that despicable act on Fox in general and specifically Bill O’Reilly and me. …I don’t want to ever hear from our own Americans, anyone voicing some sort of Muslim-extremist type justification.

Watch it:

Washington Monthly’s Steve Benen writes: “Beck has spent months — literally screaming and crying — insisting that the president is a socialist/fascist/communist/racist who’s trying to destroy the country through totalitarian means. Major media outlets have plenty of irresponsible voices, but Beck has been unique in his insane rantings. It wasn’t hard to imagine some of his viewers/listeners getting so worked up, they might at least consider doing something dangerous.”

Update A fan of Glenn Beck was recently arrested for “scouting out and taking pictures of an Air National Guard base." The woman had an arsenal that included an XM-15 assault rifle, a shotgun and 500 rounds of ammunition.

Are you sure he wasn’t using right wing code words meaning “Timothy McVeigh, where are you?”

  2. The Moderate Squad says:

Did Rupert Murdoch’s lawyers have a little sit-down with Ms. Beck?

  3. rastaman says:

in NAZI Germany, Hitler’s chief propaganda artist, Julius Streicher also disregarded ethical standards and skirted the edges of German media laws. He also made outrageous claims against jews and fomented hatred with one hand and feigning ignorance with the other.

his mantra regarding his lies?…..“something always sticks”

let’s hope Beck suffers the same fate as Streicher.

  4. majii says:

Beck is still just being Beck. Stir things up with violent and coded words, watch the results, deny the blame. He knows he and O’Reilly stirred the pot of violence against Dr. Tiller, and he now places the blame on someone in Washington. This non-statement is exactly that: a non-statement. Expect more of the same from this mouthpiece.

  5. Above the Clouds says:

Beck should try breaking the pills in half for a while.

  6. DRxJ says:

    Muslim-extremist type justification?

You mean (and I paraphrase your own words) like this:

Because these people in Washington won’t pass up the use of an emergency. Look how the Bush Administration ran with the 9/11 attacks? They tried to pin that despicable act on Iraq and misled us into an unjustifiable war…

  7. Chyron HR says:

But just one lunatic like Timothy McVeigh could ruin everything that everyone has worked so hard for. Because these people in Washington won’t pass up the use of an emergency.

Also a lunatic like Timothy McVeigh would try to kill hundreds of innocent men, women and children. But for Republicans, the only thing that matters is that it would hurt them politically.

  8. Jackie says:

As we have seen many arrested and two man who have murdered innocent people with the guidance of people from Fox News. Now one might ask why is Beck backing down? The answer is Law Suits that will be filed as a defense with many of those who have committed hate crimes. Yes as Sarah Palin push many to commit hate crimes so has the group on Fox News. O’Reilly had pushed for so long for someone to kill the Abortion Doctor and many tried and one succeeded. Now the Fox News is asking wacko’s to hurt Obama and minorities. Check you Law Books and you’ll see when you encourage a person to commit a crime you are also responsible in part for that action. You can bet those men sitting in jail are saying they were influenced by the Fox News and many more are also.

I think so! This morning Beck was on Fox & Friends saying that as bad as things are violence is not the answer. The others just sat there staring at him for a minute until someone said okay, then what should be done? Pray he said, get down on your knees and pray.

I really fear that one of those “teabaggers” or “birthers” will decide to “do God’s will” and someone will be hurt, perhaps shot, by those lunatics.

Beck and his fellow harpies are stirring the pot while bringing it to a boil. God forbid something should happen to one of our congressional representatives or senators because of the inflammatory rhetoric of Beck et al.

By the way, Lou Dobbs is a moron.

This is just a ridiculous attempt to cover his own butt! Sure Beck, rile up the crazies and then have no ownership of what they do. Beck is irresponsible and he will own the problem of wingnuts committing acts of violence because of what they’ve been fed from his show.

  15. EnnuiDivine says:

Does any rational person (read: Not Beck/rabid right/odd assortment of trolls we get in these parts) really believe that if we DO get another Oklahoma City, it would come at the hands of “Muslim extremists” and not right-wing terrorists like McVeigh?

Glenn Bleeeech! is a certifiable loony-toon. Right now, he’s enjoying his fifteen minutes of fame and I don’t blame him for warning off the lunatic fringe who actually take his insane rantings seriously. After all, if one of those morons explodes, it will entirely ruin his gig. He’ll either have to find a real job (a remote possibility) or climb back into a bottle of Jim Beam (very likely).

  22. mary lacewing says:

Of course, just by invoking McVeigh’s name Beck has managed to define Obama’s actions as something a particularly irate citizen might respond to by getting violent.

In other words he’s saying that if someone were to do something, it’s not that it would be inappropriate per se (or surprising – I can just see him shaking his head sadly saying something about how he could see that coming) but that it would damage their cause.

  30. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Oh boy, it sounds like someone took Beck to the woodshed. This probably has something to do with the woman who was caught on an army base with guns and ammunition. She told authorities that she thought the base was a re-education camp and that she thought that because Glen Beck said so. It sounds like Fixed is getting a little worried about liability factors.

Great point @ #6. The entire Bush administration canned be summed up with the words “Muslim-extremist justification.” And Beck was there to wave his pom-poms for the whole thing. It’s particularly galling to hear him now call for civility, after touting the GOPs little handbook on how to shout down healthcare information in public forums.

  37. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

I just had a thought. Considering all the horrible things that George Bush and Friends did to this country for 8 years, can anyone remember a left leaning talk show host EVER do anything that could be pointed to as “inciting” their listeners to violence? I can’t think of one.

  38. paleolib says:

My Wingnut to English dictionary translates Beck’s comment as follows:

“It is all Obama’s fault that homicidal maniacs are screaming for blood (i.e. “they have awakened a sleeping giant”). I don’t give a damn about the US Constitution and favor free elections only when my people win but I recognize that my lunatics would get wiped out if they started shooting because after all that Muslim guy does control the military (”. . . could ruin everything that everyone has worked so hard for”). One of my fans taking a shot at Obama might make even Fox think twice about putting me on the air and a full scale riot would put my audience at Supermax or in the morgue (”. . . could ruin everything that [I have] worked for”). Let’s go easy people, I almost have enough swag to buy that private island.”

Is this little display intended to inoculate Beck against any backlash if and when some nut case takes his rants to heart and takes action?

Yeah — in the aftermath, when fingers are pointing to the hatemongers, Beck wants to be able to bring out this film clip, thinking it will absolve him of all blame.

  41. joeyramonesmom says:

The footnote to the article says it all. That woman who was arrested scared him a little. Not because of what she might have done but because he might have been blamed for stirring her up. Beck, like all the other rightie vaudevillains, likes to talk big but he’s not man enough to take responsibility for whatever violence or problems his irresponsible words cause. He’s doing the cya dance today. Pathetic.

I would love to meet him in an elevator. If I could have just two minutes with him, I could make him cry like a little girl.

  42. TXProgressive says:

Recently here in Houston, a furniture store was set on fire – they caught the arsonist. In a tv interview, the police investigator stated that the arsonist was a big glen beck fan. This type of stuff doesn’t surprise me, what does surprise me is the irresponsibility of media owners and politicians – they’re lack of action in reining this type of hate talk in. They know they’re dealing with the bottom feeders, but they continue to egg them on – and fein ignorance or no responsibility to the outcome. Shameful.

  43. Purple State says:

I’ve gone through the video again, and I came up with another nugget to chew on.

See, this is the problem with Beck’s use of historical anecdotes. While the chronicle of the first Americans’ plight for recognition from England is very real, it is not romantic in the eyes of neither historians NOR Beck himself.

The “peace pipe”–diplomatic conversation and discussion–is an important tool in history, but this is a device that Beck has constantly ignored in his depictions of how the world should be run. Beck constantly cites unrest from the Revolutionary and Cold War eras and makes associations towards how those ways should be the way now.

The controversy between early Americans and the English empire is not remembered for the diplomacy between sides. It is sadly remembered as one of social unrest. Beck is just trying to massage his words so that he isn’t found responsible for inciting the public.

This is your mess, Glenn Beck. A disclaimer will not clean it up.

  44. 5th Estate says:

BECK: If anyone thinks that it would be a good idea to turn violent, think again.

Is Beck alluding to one of his ardent viewers who just got busted ‘casing’ a ANG base she thought it was a FEMA ‘camp’?

    It would destroy the Republic.

Who describes the US as “The Republic”? That’s just weird.

They have awakened a sleeping giant.

Who has? And who is the sleeping giant? (and why is Beck quoting Admiral Yamamoto?)

But just one lunatic like Timothy McVeigh could ruin everything that everyone has worked so hard for.

Screaming and yelling that Obama is a Kenyan, a Muslim, a socialist, a communist, a fascist, the antichrist, that Obama wants to take away our guns, euthanize anyone over 60, make abortions mandatory, spend us all into oblivion is hard work? And what exactly has all that hard work been for?
What’s been the result, except the hysteria that Beck has been making a career of whipping up, and the mindless obstruction to vital policies?

Because these people in Washington won’t pass up the use of an emergency.

Meaning the government, meaning the Obama administration.

So after telling everybody that Obama’s plan is for a totalitarian state and that he needs to be thwarted in that goal, Beck is now saying that the hysteria and aggressive opposition he’s been fomenting now needs to be scaled back or Obama WILL use it as an excuse to impose martial law? So Beck is still claiming that Obama has fascist intentions.

Look how the media ran with the abortion doctor killing. They tried to pin that despicable act on Fox in general and specifically Bill O’Reilly and me. …I don’t want to ever hear from our own Americans, anyone voicing some sort of Muslim-extremist type justification.

Our own Americans? Meaning Beck’s crazy fans. Yup, Beck is well aware of the woman’s arrest at the ANG base and doesn’t want to be pinned with inciting her to violence.

some sort of Muslim-extremist type justification.”
Like Obama is the Anti Christ, (“Satan”)? Too late, Beck.

This appeal is going to do nothing except give Beck some cover. Ah, now I understand the “sleeping giant” reference.
Beck is Yamamoto. HE ( not “they”) has “woken a sleeping giant” and it’s just dawned on him what he’s done with his theatrics and fearmongering.

But there’s no reason to suppose that morons Beck has riled up will listen now to his plea for calm. It would mean abandoning everything they’ve been taught and believed up until now. Beck has fomented a Jihad, it has its own cells and other leaders and and it has a life of its own.

The Republican Party is using propaganda to influence Americans against their own best interest and fraud to influence our elected leaders. This is also unacceptable. There are dozens of other behaviors that the American people find unacceptable, including having you on the air, Mr. Beck.

The Republican Party is unacceptable. Mr. Beck, you and your fellow propagandists and the rest of the C-Street crime family have awakened the sleeping giant of the American people. We demand that you fascists be held accountable to the law and we will never stop.

  66. EnnuiDivine says:

    Vigor,

Common sense time: .22 ammo won’t cause as much damage as .38, .444, 7.62, 5.56 or really any other caliber. Getting shot by a .22 bullet might not, in itself, be fatal. Getting shot by 500 .22 bullets sure as hell is.

You’re what’s wrong with people “exercising their 2nd amendment rights.” The 2nd amendment exists as an implicit right to self-defense. Nonetheless, the Founding Fathers would’ve had something to say if people back then walked around with a musket in each arm and a mortar or five at home. A handgun can be self-defense. An assault rifle (XM15, from Bushmaster. Modified M16/AR15 for civilian use) capable of firing 800 rounds per minute is used to incite chaos, violence, and murder. And, since you’re such a defender of the Constitution, this is a woman who ostensibly was going to use said assault rifle against American soliders. You sicken me.

  71. pete says:

BTW. Do you know why the U.S. and NATO went to the small caliber in the first place? Because the reduced recoil makes it possible to shoot more rounds more accurately than a larger caliber. It’s designed for volume of fire AND NOTHING ELSE.

The regular TP community actually has quite a few gun owners and they are valued members here.

An army issue M4 uses a 5.56mm standard NATO round.
    5.56mm = 0.219 of an inch.
Round up and you get .22″ or .22

That’s what the US soldier uses to kill his enemies, .22 bullets.
The XM-15 is a deadly weapon. Your “hunting rifle” comment is stupid. If you can kill a deer, you can kill a human.

Your stupidity is insulting. Piss off.

  76. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

just one lunatic like Timothy McVeigh could ruin everything that everyone has worked so hard for.

I find this sentence very telling. “Just one lunatic…could ruin everything” This sound to me like it requires lots of lunatics to prevent everything from being ruined.

I also found the choice of the words, “everything” and “everyone” most interesting. Who is everyone? One lunatic probably could not ruin everything for every American, as in the case of Timothy McVeigh. While he killed a lot of people, he certainly did not ruin everything for everyone.

I must assume that the “everyone” is every one of Beck’s followers, and not every American. If that is the case, then the sentences meaning changes to:

If you use violence alone, you will ruin everything for all of Beck’s listeners (and presumably the Republican Party).

That made me wonder what Beck meant by “everything” When someone tells me that I “ruined everything” it usually means I spoiled some kind of plan, or destroyed something that took a great effort to achieve. Assuming Beck meant that “everything” is some kind of plan, it makes we wonder what the Republicans are planning that requires violence by groups larger than one.

So to translate this sentence into non-Republican English, what Beck really said was:

If you use violence, you will disrupt the plan to overthrow the government that the fascist theocratic Republican’s have worked so hard to prepare for.

Beck is literally calling for the “lunatics” to form terrorist cells so they can carry out violence against the people of the United States of America to further whatever plan it is that Beck’s followers have “worked so hard for”.

Since trolls are stupid, ignorant, and incurious they believe others are too. But even the relatively rational ones can’t give one good reason why a civilian, even in a “Red Dawn” scenario, needs a weapon designed for volume of fire.

  78. Virtual Pebble says:

    60. Vigor sez:…

No effing NRA apologetics, Vigor. You’re being less than candid. Sure, a center-fire .223 round, which is what the XM-15 is chambered for, is not much larger than a .22, but the basic ball ammunition round is exactly what is used by the military. Since this yo-yo was probably using commercial hunting cartridges, which may have been jacketed hollow points or something similar, any poor bozo that got in front of her had she let fly could be seriously maimed or dead. Don’t forget that people get killed by .22s all time too and getting on the wrong end of a shotgun load isn’t going to make your day very pleasant either; go ask Cheney’s lawyer buddy about that one.

She’s a fruitcake and has no business wandering around a military post, even an ANG post, armed like that, unless they have a range that she has an invitation or permission to use.

It is my sincerest wish that a plague befalls the building in New York that houses all of these crackpot whack jobs who work for Faux “News”.

What concerns me is that she is clearly bonkers – and as our troll pointed out, not properly armed. So, that implies in bold terms that the less insane and far more dangerous folks are out there – better armed – on similar missions.

She only got caught because she’s nuts…I fear for the Americans who come in between the others and their missions. It really scares the crap out of me.

  81. 5th Estate says:

pete : “Since trolls are stupid, ignorant, and incurious…?

What makes me so crazy about nitwits like vigor is not so much their assumption that all liberals hate guns, but that liberals know nothing about them.

Numbties like vigor are actually MORE ignorant about weapons and the military than the average liberal (on TP anyway).

There have been quite a few self-appointed military experts who have shown up here in the past, and they have ALL been shockingly ignorant and ill-informed about even the simplest thing (as vigor so brilliantly demonstrated).

  82. Shayne says:

Beck’s looking for plausible deniability. Too late jerkoff, tell it to the judge. He should be in prison right next to Charles Manson.

  83. Shayne says:

What Vigor and the other ignorant right wing cowards don’t seem to understand is the cities are full of people with concealable weapons. And those people use them on other people routinely not just on can out behind the double wide. If President Obama gets hurt there is going to be a whole lot of folks looking to hurt somebody. And Beck, Limbaugh, O’Reilly, Murdoch and the rest of them won’t find walls big enough to keep them safe. And that’s not counting the old fashioned liberals with military experience who will defend themselves from the Nazi militia types. They’re all like Vigor and think we’d all be sitting ducks for their insanity. It’s the same mentality that got them destroyed during the Civil War.

  84. pete says:

    5th Estate,

That was my point. The stupid trolls are so stupid that they can’t imagine others aren’t as stupid as they are. Whether it’s the trolls exposing their ignorance about weapons, or Shelly Bachmann’s (InsaneR-Mn.) quoting page numbers of Bills that haven’t been written, they never dream that someone else may know better or, failing that, simply check the facts.

The part that I find maddening is that, once they have been misinformed, they will violently defend the misinformation despite all refutation.

  85. Yankeluh says:

Well Beck, it sure takes one idiot to know another idiot.

  86. Pelotonpro 048 says:

As strange as this sounds it is only a matter of time before Beck goes too far even for Faux. This will be fun to watch!

right JAQUEBAUER, and what about those lazy types who inherit their money and contribute nothing to society? Of course you never rant and rail against them, because you’re a willing pawn in the class warfare corporate America has forced on you…Who needs lobbyists when they have people like you willing to slit your throats?

    JAQUEBAUER,

“Wake up America, before Obama destroys all we have worked hard for”

I must apologize for taking this phrase out of context, but considering the nature of your comment, I really don’t think it matters.

I am surprised a conservative has finally taken credit for all the hard work of the last 8 years. I give you credit; you are a man among lesser mortals.

I find it amusing that the present state of the Republican Party constitutes hard work. I do see money being made, ratings being checked and rechecked. And make no mistake; the country knows exactly whose lap this present state of affairs truly belongs in.

I find it interesting that Murch’s Beck appears to be distancing himself from the polarization he helped to generate. I see Dobb’s ratings slip and FOX and NBC trying to put a damper on the rhetoric. They are getting scared!

The Bush administration had a vision of America, and we see the results of that vision.
If our present condition constitutes all the “hard work” you conservatives are crowing about, you are truly delusional and pathetic.

The Bush Legacy is not a vision I hold for America.
    America deserves far better.

    98. joe cantwell says: i never got to read jaquebauer’s
    comment… was it interesting?

joe, it is perhaps interesting as a historical artifact. it’s the first trollscreed I’ve seen that looks like something out of the ’60s. I think the troll JerqueBowWow may have learned bircherismo and white citizens council at his pappy’s or grandpappy’s knee – and I do mean bircherism, as in John Birch Society, Robert Welch Presiding, not birtherism, although the troll JerqueBowWow is probably that latter too. one can never have too much of a good thing, ya know.

it is possible too that JerqueBowWow is just an old farht fascist, rather than an adolescent barking his daddy’s tune. who’s to say? JerqueBowWow, his sef, perhaps?

note that he conflates race and social movement politics, i.e., the mixed “race” of our president and communism. that’s straight out of the Bircher/WCC playbook.

  98. Virtual Pebble says:

    100. Deuce Coupe says: Oh come on guys, For a middle of the road guy, Beck is really funny.

I don’t buy it, Deuce. He might be funny if he weren’t jacked up on meds and driving on the wrong side of the middle of the road head on at everyone else.

He’s playing the provocateur to a bunch of folks who aren’t wrapped too tight to begin with and he’s almost acknowledged that he might be pushing one or more into doing a McVeigh.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised to find out that Beck’s producer got a call in the middle of the night from the US Attorney for the state that ANG base is in. He might have had a couple of questions for Beck and said producer about why this nice crazy lady is running around an ANG base unauthorized, with a story. Not only with a story, but with unauthorized weaponry, too. Said story being about how Beck told her via radidio or teevee that said ANG base was a FEMA concentration camp.

It might interest some to know that carrying weapons and cameras and some other stuff on some installations, particularly active military installations, and especially active federal military installations, is a no-no. Some NG and ANG installations are federal, and I would expect most that are not to have similar rules in place under their particular state law. Someone that sent someone else out to wander onto a base with a gun might be in just as much trouble as the gun carrier.

Put that way, even a yo-yo like Beck might sit up and take notice.

Bravo to all of the excellent comments here! I think of all the progressive blogs I’ve been on, the comments here at TP are the most intelligent of them all….except of course for all of the comments made here by the intellectually challenged, drooling, knuckle dragging neanderthals on the right.
