Sen. Kit Bond (R-MO) just announced that he will support Judge Sotomayor’s nomination to the Supreme Court, explaining that “my choice for President did not win the last election, and…our people’s democracy has spoken for the change and they are getting it.” ”Elections,” says Bond, “do have consequences.” Bond joins six other Republicans in defying his party’s base to support President Obama’s nominee. Watch it:
Bond’s willingness to break from his fellow conservatives may flow from his plans to retire from the Senate at the end of his current term. A coalition of prominent right-wing activists, led by disgraced computer hacker Manuel Miranda, delivered a letter to minority senators demanding that they filibuster Judge Sotomayor just one week after her nomination was announced.
Right-wing attack dog Ed Whelan recently warned that conservative senators who do not share his views on judges “may discover that the next elections they face have unwelcome consequences for their political careers.” With no risk of a primary challenge in his future, however, Bond apparently feels comfortable voting his conscience, instead of the right wing’s “white voter strategy.”
I think he may be experiencing a sense of exhiliration after marching in lockstep with the party for so long.
August 5th, 2009 at 12:38 pm”Elections,” says Bond, “do have consequences.”
I know, I know.
There’s always one ray of sunshine that manages to find it’s way through the clouds of ignorance.
August 5th, 2009 at 12:39 pm”Elections,” says Bond, “do have consequences.”
– - I’ll say, like that one in 2000.
And another white guy from a red state sees the future.
August 5th, 2009 at 12:42 pmNow if only more Republic Fascist Party Members would retire or just go away maybe the country can move forward.
August 5th, 2009 at 12:43 pmThe repiggies are dealing with acute shrinkage issues. To oppose the nomination
of Judge Sotomayor will not endear them much with the ever increasing size and strength of the Hispanic electorate.
By the way, Lou Dobbs is a moron.
August 5th, 2009 at 12:44 pmPerhaps Kit has realized he will need to hire a few more Mexican immigrants to clean his mansion, mow the lawn, watch his grand children, cook his meals and clean the pool…..
August 5th, 2009 at 12:52 pmBy the way, Lou Dobbs is a moron.
– - I keep smirking when I see this, but I think Dobbs is more a scared, aging white guy who can’t accept facts as they are.
Now Glenn Beck, HE’S a moron.
August 5th, 2009 at 12:54 pmI think Sen. Bond has hit the nail right on the head here.
I, for one, would not wish to encourage blind protests when the other side wins the right to elect who they feel is worthy for the Supreme Court, so I hope that we all learn some value when it comes to these hearings.
The progressives won the election. We get the right to decide on the next member of the Supreme Court. Then next Republican that gets in the Oval Office should have the same right, and I will respect that person’s selection if the candidate meets all the requirements, regardless of race, gender or orientation.
August 5th, 2009 at 12:58 pmIt’s a sad state of the world when a jerk like Ed Whelan tries to dictate what to do and what to think…by the way, who the hell is Ed Whelan?
August 5th, 2009 at 12:58 pmSo if your republican you have to retire in order to vote your conscience?
August 5th, 2009 at 1:01 pmI guess sometimes Altzheimer’s can be a good thing.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:02 pmPersonally,I am suspicious of this last minute “Come to Jesus: moment.
Kit Bond, imho, is hoping to gain some quid pro quo with Dems.
One of his former staffers was indicted in the Abramoff investigation, and the investigation is STILL ongoing.
According to some, one of the MAIN reasons Bond chose not to run again.
Jus’ sayin’.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:07 pmI, for one, will definitely not miss this buffoon.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:09 pm@12
Anti Corruption Republican:
Fraser Verrusio: INDICTEDBecause Mr. Verrusio is on the receiving end of an indictment, I infer that there is no plea deal … 2. Sen. Kit Bond (R-Mo.) and an Unnamed Senate Staffer …

Nice going Senator Bond. It’s a safe move, but nevertheless, a decision based on reason, not on knee, er.. arm jerk reaction. Heil ReichWing!
August 5th, 2009 at 1:13 pmapparently when our senators are not worried about re-election they can vote their for what they believe. maybe they should all only get one term.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:13 pmTeh Sotomayor vote is an artificial tempest.
Her approval is gay-ron-fuukin-TEED! chers.
the margin, or of whom it consists if useless, irrelevant distraction.
Fuggedabodit.
She’ll be a reliable corporatist.
just as “thePrez” intended.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:13 pm“Elections have consequences”. Psst, Senator Bond, I think
August 5th, 2009 at 1:15 pmyou need to have a word with Senator McCain.
I remember Bond from over 30 years ago in the state of Misery. He was honorable even then, in spite of being handicapped by being a Republican.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:17 pmIt’s interesting that that Ed Whoever says the next election could have consequences without acknowledging the consequences of the last one. If the lunatic fringe doesn’t become more progressive, they will continue to lose.
Maybe Bond will let his conscience be his guide on other votes too.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:20 pmA Republican with scruples? Who would of thought it?
August 5th, 2009 at 1:23 pmtokin, it could have been worse. it could have been hillary
or even much worse: McCain
August 5th, 2009 at 1:29 pmtokin librul ,
August 5th, 2009 at 1:30 pmHow dare you attack Sotomayor. You are a racist, anyone who is against her is a racist.
I wouldn’t go so far as to say he has scruples. He’s done and said a lot of “republican” things over the past few years and I, for one, am glad to see him go. I live in Missouri and have been writing him for years about his cr*p. However, I’ll begrudgingly give him credit for this statement.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:03 pmBonds decisions as he retires illustrates why thinking of politics as a *career* erodes our democracy. The goal of the political career game is getting re-elected, not taking care of the nation’s business. All eyes are on the money; ethics and morality be damned.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:39 pmWell i am glad to hear this>>>>>>>>>>> but it way to late>>>>>>>
I guess he feels he needs to clear his mine so he be able to do some relaxing and retiring.
on the sweat and blood of the people.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:12 pmThis is strange. Kit Bond isn’t running for re-election and he is one of the few republicans who seem to support Sotomayor. I mean this is a Republican who will take any position opposite of a Democrats position.
We’ll have to wait and see. When it comes time to vote, he may change his mind and vote against her. Notice Judd Greg was going to be commerce secretary. Then all of the sudden he didn’t take the job cause of his “different views”. Not like he didn’t know from the start a Democratic administration, would use Democratic policies.
He also denies Climate Change. Just so you all know what kind of crazy your dealing with.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:13 pmI went through the WAPO list of GOP senators who have already declared. 30 will say no, 7 will say yes and 3 are still undeclared.
Voinovich is not yet on the list. I bet he will vote yes.
So, assuming that Kennedy or Byrd can make it and assuming that one of them does not, this would mean 67 votes for Sotomayor. Could go as high as 69, but I doubt it.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:27 pmFor Republicans to do the right thing they have to not run office. When they are in office they can’t do the right thing or the corporate and right wing hate groups come down hard on them.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:46 pmKit Bond is an unreliable drunkard. This man is just brain-farting, he knows that there are a lot of hispanics in and around Branson, MO (they all work in food service and in hotels), and he’s keeping the path swept clean for Roy Blunt to succeed him in his senate seat.
Like Samuel Clemons, I’m Missouri born, and I trust his words as much as I would a leaky boat.
August 5th, 2009 at 4:31 pmKit Bond is a RINO and I’m glad he’s leaving.
August 5th, 2009 at 4:51 pmGood for him, and filibuster how?
August 5th, 2009 at 8:24 pmconservative guy says:
Kit Bond is a RINO and I’m glad he’s leaving.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
You are a moron and I wish YOU would leave…Earth that is
August 6th, 2009 at 2:28 amconservative guy says:

Hey, go ahead and keep throwing your own kind under the bus. Seems to be working for us when you do.
