Yesterday, super-hawk John Bolton was upset that President Clinton, along with a group that included Center for American Progress President and CEO John Podesta, went over to North Korea to negotiate the release of two imprisoned American journalists, Laura Ling and Euna Lee. “It comes perilously close to negotiating with terrorists,” Bolton said. Even after news of their release, Bolton still called the move a mistake. “[T]his is a classic case of rewarding bad behavior,” he complained.
Many right-wing commentators later piled on. “John Bolton is right,” declared the Weekly Standard’s Steve Hayes. “This is a lifeline to a regime that is a terrorist regime that has proliferated nuclear technology,” he said. Former Bush press secretary Dana Perino even blamed Vice President Al Gore for the journalists’ imprisonment because he is a co-founder of the company (Current TV) that employs them. “Al Gore is responsible if he made the order, but ultimately, he’s responsible, and I think we need to hear a little bit more about that,” she said last night on Fox News. Some other lowlights:
– Fox News’ Dick Morris called Clinton’s trip “awful” and “ridiculous” and suggested that Ling and Lee should “live with the consequences of their decision to go” to North Korea.
– Charles Krauthammer complained that North Korea “got a lot” out of the deal and that “it does help the North Koreans in their legitimacy.”
But some conservatives did see the utility of Clinton’s trip. “I think it’s wonderful, obviously, that he secured their release,” Laura Ingraham conceded. Shortly after landing in Los Angeles, Ling expressed her “deepest gratitude” for the rescue:
LING: Thirty hours ago Euna Lee and I were prisoners in North Korea. We feared that at any moment we could be sent to a hard labor camp and then suddenly we were told that we were going to a meeting. We were taken to a location and when we walked through the doors we saw standing before us President Bill Clinton. We were shocked but we knew instantly in our hearts that the nightmare of our lives was finally coming to an end. And now, we stand here, home and free. Euna and I would just like to express our deepest gratitude to President Clinton and his wonderful, amazing, not to mention, super-cool team.
Watch it:
But what many conservatives don’t understand is that, as nonproliferation expert and Ploughshares Fund president Joe Cirincione noted yesterday, Clinton was “the right man at the right moment.” And the BBC’s John Sudworth noted that now was the time to get the deal done:
And not least, there’s always the fear that North Korea could, by holding on to these two journalists, continue to use them as leverage. So I think in Washington’s wider — and perhaps colder — political interests, it makes good sense to try to clear this up now.
“I am very happy that after this long ordeal, Laura Ling and Euna Lee are now home and reunited with their loved ones,” President Clinton said in a statement. “When their families, Vice President Gore and the White House asked that I undertake this humanitarian mission, I agreed. I share a deep sense of relief with Laura and Euna and their families that they are safely home.”
We share the sense of excitement and relief expressed by President Obama and many others today upon the successful release of our fellow citizens, Laura Ling and Euna Lee. We are proud of the role Center for American Progress CEO and founder John D. Podesta played in accompanying former President Clinton on the mission to secure their freedom. We hope the North Korean regime decides to build on this successful episode by recommitting to its existing obligations toward the verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula through peaceful means.
Jealous much, righties?
Or just disappointed that it didn’t cost 100 billion dollars and result in lots of foreigners getting killed?
You guys are just SO VERY classy.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:27 pmHe’s a good man.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:27 pmThis is the exact same way the Right-wing media reacted to John McCain’s mission to rescue those hostages in Colombia last year… isn’t it?
It’s not?
Hmm… that’s a little strange…
August 5th, 2009 at 1:32 pmWhat, Obama didn’t want to send Junior Bush? The nerve of him!!!!
August 5th, 2009 at 1:32 pmRight. Rewarding bad behavior by potentially saving the lives of two American citizens. Would it show strength to let them rot in a North Korean prison for 12 years just to make a point? Wasn’t St. Ronnie hailed as a hero when he benefited from Carter’s efforts on behalf of the Iranian hostages?
This is what diplomacy looks like, asswipes. Learn from it.
PEACE
August 5th, 2009 at 1:32 pmWow. Look at the Right work themselves into a frenzy. Let’s look at the track record, shall we? Ever since Georgie boy got in office, he has made these countries more defiant. Iran, North Korea and don’t forget George’s favorite dictator, Hugo Chavez. From what I see, a little diplomacy goes a long way. And what would the Right want us to do? Let those poor women suffer brutality in a foriegn land? Yeah, that’s what they would rather do. Dirt-bags.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:33 pmGreat job Bill. Of course if these were relatives of any of these blowhards, enough couldn’t be done fast enough. So what if it cost us a couple of cases of Jack.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:34 pmThese people are beyond shameless. In a way there is a tiny residue of what might have once served as a conscience in their shameless excuses for the Cheney/Bush disaster. Sadly, they’ll never appear anywhere except FOX where no one will ever beard them for their hypocrisy. Thank God there are enough GnOP pols who can’t keep their pants zipped. It’s the same amoral behavior.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:35 pmJust imagine it was the Bush twins imprisoned in an unfriendly nation. What would be considered off-limits in that scenario?
That’s what I thought.

The repiggies are the Party of Stupid.
Everything they attempted these past eight years resulted in calamity and disaster.
Thank God they are out of power, and the adults are once again in charge.
By the way, Lou Dobbs is a moron.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:40 pmToo bad that Mr’s Bolton, Morris and Krauthammer didn’t offer themselves to be held in their place, doing hard labor.
Oh, wait. We have 3 Americans being held by Iran. Now is their chance to be true to their word and not ‘reward’ bad behavior of a foreign country.
John, Dick and Charles, surrender now for glory of American freedom!
August 5th, 2009 at 1:40 pmto the Right Wing, people (actual living people) have no meaning beyond their use as political tools or as cannon fodder.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:42 pmEnvy is a bad thing, righties.
Your man couldn’t accomplish anything diplomatically, so you feel you must condemn anyone else’s diplomatic efforts, particularly successful ones.
Keep it up – jerks!
Teabag shows, racism, disruption of democratic govermnment, condemn anything and all things successful.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:43 pmYour guy left the largest pile of stinking sh!t on the white house doorstep when he left and now you are just unable to stomach the truth – he was a failure and so are you.
The attacks by the right wing on Clinton have never stopped. This is because they were unable to impeach him and because he is still popular in contrast to Bush. These attacks are irrelevant to the public.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:43 pmCriminy sakes, these conservative right-wingnuts are the poorest group of losers I’ve ever seen.
The right wingers are just going to have to get over it somehow and move on. The world is headed in a new direction and has rejected the imperialistic direction you tried to impose for the last 10 or so years.
Seriously, get some counseling or some medications. For your own good. And ours.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:43 pmWell, these clowns had eight cheney/bush years to force these “outlaw” countries to submit to the cheney/bush will and it didn’t happen. They have been wrong on every turn and don’t deserve one second of time presenting their views on anything.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:44 pmFox News’ Dick Morris called Clinton’s trip “awful” and “ridiculous.”
And yet Morris himself might best be described by these exact words.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:45 pmThere’s no hope for conservatives. They’re never going to get it.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:45 pmThis is a lose-lose proposition for the right. Who didn’t want these lovely girls home? Oh, maybe because they were not white?
August 5th, 2009 at 1:45 pmIt’s beginning to look like the Bush years were just the “last throes” of the Republican Party
good riddance
August 5th, 2009 at 1:45 pmShorter GOP: “Captured soldiers should be killed! Imprisoned journalists should be killed! More blood for the blood god!”
August 5th, 2009 at 1:45 pmSpencer’s mom@9, Oh, you would see the Righties move Heaven and Earth if their loved ones were peril. That is why I will never forgive (nor forget) the Bush Administrations response to Hurricane Katrina. If New Orleans was having a Billionaires Convention and their cronies were in jeopardy, the Righties would have sent in the troops lickity-split. But it was only the Middle Class and the poor, so they let them fend for themselves. I still can’t get the images of the dead in wheelchairs and on the side of the Super Dome out of my head. I will haunt me.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:45 pmTheir entire ideology depends on them not getting it.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:46 pmI look at the ex-Presidents and Vice Presidents from the recent past and see much more international activity done by Democrats than Republicans. It’s quite telling.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:47 pmThis is the same response when the Somali Pirates seized that ship. Remember how the Right claimed that Obama was weak because he didn’t respond right away? And after Obama gave the orders to take them out remember their reply? “Oh, he just made matters worse.” WTF? You can’t win with these assh*les. We shouldn’t even try.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:48 pmRight Wing Attacks Clinton’s Successful Trip To Free American Journalists In North Korea
– - It’s a neocon wet dream.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:50 pmunder Clinton, Jimmy Carter was able to sue for peace almost globally. Ireland, North Korea, even Palestine.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:52 pmThere are not enough adjectives in the english language to describe how despicable these repubs are. We are finding out though, that their is no limit to how low these people will go to get their way.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:54 pmI don’t remember Dick Morris getting indignant about “living with their consequences” when the Bush Administration was secretly negotiating with the Taliban for the release of Christian missionaries proselytizing in Afghanistan in direct opposition to that country’s law in 2001.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:55 pmfrom abcnews:
In the end, it was the reclusive tyrant’s desire to be seen with former president Bill Clinton that created a deal to let them go free.
Ohh, that’s gotta hurt all those rabid anti-Clinton people.
Let’s face it, there’s no way they were going to applaud that one! What is that affiction called? Clinton derangement syndrome?
August 5th, 2009 at 1:56 pmThink of the irony. Bill Clinton gets kudos for his work. And Georgie spends his days picking up Barney’s droppings. If that isn’t a metophor for Bush’s legacy, I don’t know what is.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:57 pmThe fact that these trolls just can’t live with is that a sitting president can call upon Bill Clinton, Al Gore or Jimmy Carter to go almost anywhere on the planet knowing that they will be received with respect. If they sent Chimpy or The Dick anywhere outside of Canada, the U.K. and perhaps a few countries in Eastern Europe they would be subject to attack or arrest. Good thing foreigners don’t count, right neocons?
By the way, Dana Perino couldn’t find North Korea on a large print Fox “News” map.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:59 pmAs I said elsewhere, only Republicans are so anti-American that they are actually disappointed & angry when fellow Americans are freed from captivity. The true colors of the GOP reveal hate, anger, & partisanship– no love of their country or its citizens.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:59 pmpaleolib says: 1:59

August 5th, 2009 at 2:02 pmNo, no, mary lacewing! Don’t you see? By agreeing to be seen with Kim Jong Il, ill Clinton is appeasing the tyrant! After all, Kim wanted to be seen with Clinton, and Clinton gave him exactly what he wanted!!!! What’s next? Giving him nuclear technology? August 5th, 2009 at 2:04 pmyeahhhhh SHUT the UP already Faux! Bush’s policy on NK was working so swimmingly, wasn’t it? NOT. It would seem at this point Bills visit to NK has been the only contact with NK we have been allowed. I doubt we will get anywhere much with NK right now, since NK is struggling with the sucession question as Kim Jong II-sung is rumored to have life ending cancer, and the military is not happy that he wants to pass the President for life on to his son. Getting the reporters out now was a better decision than letting NK use them later. I have to doubt whether any of those “comentators” on Faux News have had a rational thought since the Bush era.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:05 pmI almost think I’m in a dream world. These young women finally have freedom, and the Righties piss all over it. My God. We are Americans! Can’t the Neo-Cons at least show compassion that these women are safe and free? Does their hatred for anything other than Republicanism cloud everything? I honestly think these people have a brain disorder! Can’t they celebrate that Clinton did a good job to secure those womens freedom? Didn’t Bush brag that he wanted to spread Democracy? Oh, I guess that is reserved for oil rich states.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:06 pm– Fox News’ Dick Morris called Clinton’s trip “awful” and “ridiculous” and suggested that Ling and Lee should “live with the consequences of their decision to go” to North Korea.

Ah, more voices of compassionate conservatism. These folks sound unhinged at this point.
Bubba did good.

August 5th, 2009 at 2:09 pmKim Il Jong is going to seek attention on the world stage in one way or another – by testing weapons or getting his picture taken with Clinton and other respected world leaders. The US can give him attention by labelling him one of the axis of evil or by talking to him. Which costs the US and the world more? Which gives the most benefit? The right is, again, wrong.

August 5th, 2009 at 2:09 pmLets, see.

Gee, what a mistake.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:10 pmWebster’s dictionary describes liberalism as: a political philosophy based on belief in progress, the essential goodness of man, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political civil liberties.
Conservatism: a political philosophy based on tradition and social stability stressing established institutions.
I would add greedy, self-centered, and cold-hearted.

Podhoretz is racist and an extreme Zionist. I’d like to know when we’re going to hold Israel accountable for 60 years of crimes against humanity.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:11 pmIf Bolton was still in charge he’d be bringing the girls home in body bags.

And I hear that Clinton had dinner with him too. What a message to send to the rest of the world! Unforgiveable.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:13 pm4. Chris Dutch said, “What, Obama didn’t want to send Junior Bush? The nerve of him!!!!”
Uh Chris, the goal was to free the journalists, not to get them killed.
But seriously, Carter was a successful diplomatic mission. He didn’t have to drop the first nuke or even fire a pea shooter. Just have a little talk. Most media are hailing the success.
Isn’t it rather self-defeating for the repubs to criticize what is obviously a feel-good moment ? (of course, I realize that keeping the base enraged and non-sentient can also be a goal).
August 5th, 2009 at 2:15 pmUltra right winger John Podhoretz attacks Ling and Lee, calling them “amateurish” and saying that they should “be held accountable”.
Five months in a North Korean jail seems to be some form of “accountability”. How much have we held accountable Bush, Cheney, Rove, Libby, Yoo, Gonzales, Blackwater, ……
August 5th, 2009 at 2:16 pmWhat former President Clinton did elevated our nation in the eyes of the world. It was another very visible demonstration that the era of BushCheney is over, that the United States is once again both civil and civilized, that we value human life over political posturing, that peace always trumps violence in negotiations.
And that goes against everything the neocons need to advance their agenda.
Clinton also opened the door for our Secretary of State to begin a reasonable dialogue with North Korea. Oh my God! What’s next?

LOL “Freedom Balls”? Is that like a really big Tea Party?
August 5th, 2009 at 2:18 pmLifted from The Bible, of all places. Chew on that, Righties.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:18 pmNow what if the former clown President and co-President Supreme Leader Dick freed the two journalists [which of course, this would never happen]? What would the wingnut media do? Of course, they would bring out the balloons and cake in celebration that their BFF Administration saved the day. But, no, it wasn’t George and Dick. It was the impeached former President and ex-Veep whose candidancy for President was stolen in 2000. This is why the wingnuts are clinging on to their pearls and having a hissy fit over this: Bubba is back in the spotlight.
And the wingnut media will never get it that Bill Clinton is more powerful and popular in this country and overseas out of office than he was in office.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:20 pmHere’s another Bible verse that the right can chew on:
James 3:17-18
But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:22 pmGee, lessened tensions and improved relations.
:0
It will be hard to live with, but we’ll try.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:23 pmIn a normal; civil world, we might expect a statement or letter of gratitude and thanks to Bill Clinton from George Bush and former members of his administration for safely and peacefully delivering these Americans home. Instead, we get Podhoretz and Bolton without a shred of grace or compassion–let alone acknowledgment of success and freedom.

August 5th, 2009 at 2:26 pmNote the subtle differences from how Bush/Cheney would have handled the situation–i.e., carpet-bombed some tiny country.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:27 pmSorry everyone – I’ll stop now.
Man oh man republicans are SO predictable.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:27 pmThis was a win win win win situation for everyone. Who the hell cares if North Korea had some sort of agenda? This incident could be the ice-breaker that allows for a more peaceful planet. How very cool is that!
August 5th, 2009 at 2:28 pmSee the difference people between republican run govt and democratic run govt?
The republicans approach to govt is to tell you govt doesn’t work.
The republicans approach to govt is to do nothing, and let US citizens rot and die in a North Korean prison, just like they did in Katrina.
The republicans will tell you “we’re sorry, there’s nothing we can do”.
And the democrats approach to government, is to “GIT R DONE”.
:|
Now, who would you rather have in charge during a crisis?
August 5th, 2009 at 2:29 pmPLC, you just know Jesus would be labeled a Commie by the White Wing. He collected the only food available (a few loaves and some fish) and then fed everyone with it. And He didn’t charge a cover charge, ask for Oaths of Loyalty or even campaign contributions. He couldn’t be bought off by lobbyists.
Makes me wonder why these buffoons consider this a Christian nation when they want nothing more than to deprive and denegrate everyone who isn’t rich, white and male.

August 5th, 2009 at 2:29 pmFormer Bush press secretary Dana Perino even blamed Vice President Al Gore for the journalists’ imprisonment because he is a co-founder of the company (Current TV) that employs them. “Al Gore is responsible if he made the order, but ultimately, he’s responsible, and I think we need to hear a little bit more about that,”
Simply amazing….these same fools ignored the decider-n-chief never, ever, never taking responsibility for any of the shit he did for the entirety of his 8 years of ruin to this great nation…and she has the gall to criticize a decision that a private citizen made that had a wholly successful outcome…simply amazing
August 5th, 2009 at 2:30 pmYou’d have to be heartless to listen to Ling’s speech and watch Lee looking at her husband and daughter, and say they should have been left to rot in N. Korea.
Oh, wait…
August 5th, 2009 at 2:33 pmSpencer’s mom, maybe the Christian Pharisees like the phrase “Jesus Loves You” because it means, in their selfish little minds and hearts, that they don’t have to.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:33 pmNow we know the people “Tokin Liberal” was listening to before he posted his tripe on the Think Fast thread this morning…
Sounds like he was expressively soaking in Morris’ diatribe, for sure.
The only thing that would have satisfied the right wing neocons would have been if N Korea had tortured them and executed them. That’s the only kind of diplomacy they recognize.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:34 pmYea, but it would’ve been the wrong country.

question: i keep hearing bits about clinton working out this deal…
and i also heard, can’t remember the name, gibbs?, someone-who-knows,
that this deal was made BEFORE clinton even got on that plane – that
they wouldn’t send him to NK without knowing how it would end.
fine. great. perfect, actually.
that means that LOTS of kudos go tot LOTS of people.
i’d like to know more… will i?
August 5th, 2009 at 2:36 pmAnother low for the neocon slugs. Limbaugh has just “just asked” if President Clinto “hit on the two journalists.” Bolton, Krauthammer, and Morris are stupid, but Limbaugh is disgusting. He has always been a bit of political pornographer, but this is brand new.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:38 pmIf we had let the two girls rot there, these republican losers would have been crying about that.
Face it.
This is sour grapes from a bunch of LAZY, INCOMPETENT BUNGLING BUFFOONS, who can’t stand the fact that when democrats are in charge, they get the job done.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:39 pmHow come bush didn’t go?
August 5th, 2009 at 2:39 pmHey, Waynebro. @ #79, I think that would have sent a very strong messages to the Austrians. And while we’re at it, I don’t like the way those Icelanders are looking at us either…
August 5th, 2009 at 2:39 pmI’d like to “just ask” Limbaugh if Dick Morris is sucking on his toes during his broadcasts. The video feeds showing Limbaugh’s bouncy demeanor certainly suggest something is going on “down there” to excite him.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:41 pmkaty, of course a deal was struck before Clinton boarded that plane. There is no reason he would have gone without at least partial assurance that he would return with the women. There would have been no greeting ceremony at the airport in N. Korea, no scheduled visit complete with press at the meeting of the two men.
But it wasn’t a done deal until they boarded the plane to come home. Clinton is a great American whose legacy was tarnished by a bunch of hypcrits on a witch hunt.

Nah.

good one;-)
August 5th, 2009 at 2:53 pmThe three Americans who “stumbled into Iran and got arrested” at least didn’t take 150,000 troops with them on their misadventure.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:55 pmblotchdog’s post will done get raptured soon enough, but before it does, I would like to point out that it used the adjective “stupid” to describe the “liberals” arrested in Iran.
Now, from the article that blotchdog so eagerly posted:
Three Americans whose disappearance in Iran has prompted concern from U.S. officials are idealistic UC Berkeley graduates whose interest in Middle Eastern culture and human rights led them abroad to study and do freelance journalism, friends and colleagues said Monday.
Hmmmmmm, I guess in blotchdog’s world, being UC Berkely graduates with an interest in Middle Eastern culture and HUMAN RIGHTS are stoopid!
August 5th, 2009 at 2:56 pmMust be that whole Islamo-facial thing.
This is where the Right Wing beats the Left every time. They have the strength and will to strong oppose EVERYTHING the opposition does. Lefties are too meek to do the same thing.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:58 pmWe understand it just fine inbred.
You republicans are too utterly bungling, stupid and incompetent to succeed at anything so you don’t even try.
And you’d let two Americans rot and die in a North Korean prison because when you’re in charge the American people come last. Just like you let them rot and die in Katrina.
And when you see the democrats actually doing what they were elected to do….and doing it with ease, you’re mad and want to cry because it casts an even brighter light on the last 8 years of worthless bungling incompetent can’t get it done republican rule.
We understand it just fine.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:59 pmI look at Bill Clinton like the brother I wish I had ok I’m African American but I was never taught racism so I think differently then others. I know Bill would help any American who needed help, even if it were the Bush twins. But many Americans have so much hate they think like Bolton who wouldn’t save his own daughter if she were jailed in North Korea. We have some very sick people and most of the Evil people were part of the Bush Administration. I often think of the victims of Katrina who begged for help and Bill Clinton came to help. Yes Daddy Bush came for some contracts for his son and the photo ops, Barbara Bush showed the World how racist she is by saying the victims were living better in the Dome. Yes they quickly sent Barbara Bush back to the ranch. Laura was not interested in the victims because their was on profit for her. Isn’t it interesting we have 4 living Presidents with only two doing what ever they can to help all Americans. Yes Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton are always available to all Americans but the Bush Presidents are only users of the taxpayers.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:59 pmHEY! Blotchdog just admitted he’s the dumb one!
Good boy, Blotchdog!
GOOOOOD BOY!

August 5th, 2009 at 3:02 pmYeah, Bolt-On, those journalists would be some much better off rotting in a North Korean prison.
A$$Hole.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:03 pmDumb?
I’d say more like stupid beyond all recognition.
You’re a worthless little prick who backs losers who can’t get the job done and now you’re in here whining because Bill Clinton with a handshake and a smile just undid 8 years of damage to North Korean relations left by that uneducated bungling incompetent clown you fools elected named Bush.
Bill Clinton just shined a light on the sheer impotence of republican govt.
He made fools of you all.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:04 pmEven after being out of the Presidency for 8 years, Bill Clinton has more power in a handshake and a smile than your little bungling dictator did with an entire army under his control.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:06 pmwatchdog, the answers are “yes” and “no”. I’ll leave you to try to figure which answer goes with which question. Fetch.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:11 pmYeah I do. I also thougth that Iraq was totally under control and that continued sanctions were working.
I would rather invest in a cooperative with these nations than wage a bloody and costly war that achieved nothing any time.
As pointed out by many. You are just plain dumb. Thank god your idiots are out of power.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:12 pmI wonder what their reaction would have been if they had been two Fox News reporters. If it was Steve Doocey in North Korean custody I would have let them keep him.

August 5th, 2009 at 3:21 pmYou must see this clip.
This woman is nuts. Is she actually blaming Bill Clinton for the death of Daniel Pearl because Clinton did not do the same for him?
See for yourself.
http://progressnotcongress.org/?p=2414
August 5th, 2009 at 3:22 pmRepublicans are going crazy. The Democrats are just pounding them left, right, and center.
Notice they are not really talking much about Clinton bringing them home. They are takling about the nukes.
It’s all they know how to do. Fear/Hate Monger. They have no idea how to formulate ideas or plans. Notice they won the Healthcare battle in the 90’s. And what did their reforms do to the healthcare insurance industry? Premiums tripled and profits went up more then 400%. O and we’re around 37th in quality of care. BRAVO…..
August 5th, 2009 at 3:26 pmDear WatchCur:
You should have bought a squirrel.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:29 pmkevsters says:
This woman is nuts. Is she actually blaming Bill Clinton for the death of Daniel Pearl because Clinton did not do the same for him?
I wouldn’t say that she’s blaming Clinton for singlehandedly dooming Pearl, but this is an orange-to-apple comparison she’s stretching for. There were no messages from North Korea that the two journalists were going to be killed. No reason to. Meanwhile, if you send an envoy to Pakistan in 2002–months after 9/11–you’re pretty much stepping into a death trap, whether it be Pearl’s or the envoy’s.
Wow.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:36 pmHa ha ha you right wing tools. President Clinton did in less than 24 hours what you losers couldn’t do in 8 years.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:37 pmWouldn’t happen. Faux News personalities like Steve Doocy don’t like to leave the comfort of their studio.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!
Oh my! Thanks for that, Doc!!!

August 5th, 2009 at 3:48 pmGOP: We have an 18-year crusade against a very successful democratic ex-president and you two little girls got in the middle of it. He toppled us once again (has anyone dared to keep count?) like a knife through hot butter. On a happy day we threaten to bomb random countries containing dirty foreign people, on a bad day we pick off people right here in America (captured soldiers, journalists– nobody’s off limits) and advocate they be fed to the wolves. Making a couple of Americans martyrs for our failed rigid ideology could, by some off chance in hell, help us regain power in 2010 – POWER, POWER, POWER!
August 5th, 2009 at 3:49 pmSo let’s see. We had 3 options:
1) Cut our losses and let the two young women rot in a North Korean prison.
2) Nuke the whole freakin’ nation. The women would die, but the opportunity to take out an adversary would be worth the collateral damage.
3) Let Bill Clinton provide a pre-negotiated photo op for that whack-job Kim Jong Il, the women are released, and tensions between the two nations are reduced such that diplomacy and talks involving nuclear threats possibly can be resumed.
Gee. I don’t know. Tough call.
Of course, if you subscribe to the conventional right wing philosophy, it’s choice #1. If you are a far right extremist, obviously #2 is the way to go. By no means choose #3, because that would create the impression that the Obama Administration did something right, and we certainly cannot allow that to happen.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:50 pmYea, glad you noticed that lesson we gave you too.
Now you know democrats can disagree, not get along and STILL get the job done.
Something that your bungling bunch of blockheads couldn’t do in 8 solid years.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:52 pmUs: diplomacy
Them: guns, bombs, riots, general thuggery
August 5th, 2009 at 3:52 pmwatchdog jerks back to the primaries – talk about contorting the debate! Smart power is real and Bill Clinton isn’t afraid to get the job done. Right-wingers spread fear and in the process underestimate America’s capabilities. They want to project America as being all brauns — not that approach has much use — when throughout our history brains has done the job most of time. Even when military use is required the right-wing nuts are incapable of properly employing a force.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:59 pmYou think it was a smart idea to step foot on N Korean soil? And I’m the dumb one?
You won’t even step in your own backyard, basement-dwelling chickenhawk.
August 5th, 2009 at 4:03 pmHave you heard more whining and pouting in your life??
Bolton…almost cried in his mustache…Podhoretz spewed more vile for the mindless masses of huddled wingnuts…
Who needs Loon Watch when they do it to themselves!! You absolutely can’t make this stuff up….
August 5th, 2009 at 4:03 pmlol, only on election night last year.
August 5th, 2009 at 4:26 pmWith respect to Republican’s inability to govern, which came first, the cowardice or the ignorance?
August 5th, 2009 at 4:41 pmBasically what these Regressives are saying is that the two women are not white, and since they were working for a company owned by Al Gore, they are not even American, so why even bother to save their lives?
“Disgusting” is too mild a word to describe how it feels.

Hey, conservative guy, if you are going to quote Limbaugh, you should use those little grammatical markings that are designed for such a purpose and give Limbaugh credit.
You and Limbaugh are perverts. You can quote me.
August 5th, 2009 at 4:53 pmReal classy conservative guy, real classy. Way to keep up the childish behavior of your leaders. Bwaaack, what does limbaugh say, bwaaack.
August 5th, 2009 at 4:57 pmconservative guy says:

That’s a good Rush Limbaugh parrot. Polly wanna cracker?
August 5th, 2009 at 5:06 pmconservative guy says:

That’s what I love about Clinton’s legacy — the right’s continual obsession with a matter long resolved between Bill & Hillary is ALL they’ve got!
August 5th, 2009 at 5:10 pmI guess we can add conservative guy to our long list of plagiarist trolls.
Not that he’ll know about it; conservative guy doesn’t have the cojones to stick around and defend his blather. Just rips a fart and exits the room, every time.
August 5th, 2009 at 5:19 pmWow.
Look at this troll squirm.
:|
He’s miserable, the poor thing.
August 5th, 2009 at 5:31 pmConservatives and reichwingnut extremists are just evil people. They are domestic terrorists and make me wonder why we worry about attacks from outside when we have an enemy doing the terror inside our borders. The righties are worthless, unAmerican, jackasses.
August 5th, 2009 at 5:33 pmIf he did, no doubt he would have been successful there too.
August 5th, 2009 at 5:33 pmThe same people who knock these two American citizens supported lies to start an immoral, illegal, and unnecessary war in Iraq and supported the killing of innocent civilians all for the love of the Rethuglican party. Conservatives are evil and ignorant people.
August 5th, 2009 at 5:35 pmBolton is more interested in making points with the neocons rather than pragmatism. He puts the political above what is in our best interests. This is the real world and not a chess game.
August 5th, 2009 at 6:20 pmIt’s fascinating what can be accomplished when you don’t follow GW Bush’s method of “cowboy diplomacy” like his threats and “wanted dead or alive” comments. Democrats get things done.
August 5th, 2009 at 6:37 pmThanks, and its true.
It’s the democrats who “GIT R DONE”.
The republicans makes speeches about why they can’t.
August 5th, 2009 at 7:44 pmLet’s look at the base facts here:
1) When anyone enters a foreign country, they are subjecting themselves to the laws of that country – whether it is a democracy or dictatorship.
2) if you enter illegally, you can expect to be treated as a criminal.
3) when you go to expose poor conditions, tyranny, abuse, … and the country has laws against speaking out against the government, you can expect to be treated as a criminal.
In my opinion, the US Government should not intervene in this case, the individuals involved knew what they were doing and knew the risk.
If it is uncovered that the administration “neogotiated” with the North Koreans in any way, it is a crime.
August 5th, 2009 at 7:55 pmztesnovich–
so what do your points say about our invasion of Iraq?
Saddam’s country, Saddam’s rules?
August 5th, 2009 at 8:22 pmReagan’s crew didn’t negotiate with Iran to free the hostages, they negotiated to *delay* releasing them until after the election with the agreement to sell Iran missiles if Reagan won.
Casey was called to testify about it, but he conveniently died.
August 5th, 2009 at 8:22 pmI watched some coverage of the release on CNN last night, and it was pathetic. There were plenty of intimations that Clinton conducted some shady deal and only managed to give Kim Jong Il some photo ops.
Of course, there was no speculation about the very real possibility that they really were spies. And there was not much background in our relations with North Korea. They showed film clips of missile tests without mentioning that they were duds, etc.
I want everyone to TURN IT OFF. Get on-line and learn how to do research. Television news is a histrionic mess that doesn’t deserve an audience.
August 5th, 2009 at 8:23 pmClinton didn’t hit on the girls but I heard Mark Sanford fell in love with them while on the Appalachian Trail
August 5th, 2009 at 9:43 pmNaturally, the right wing fringe is outraged, outraged I say, that President Clinton made the humanitarian trip to North Korea on behalf of ordinary Americans. Now, had those imprisoned journalists been billionaires and moguls … the trip would have totally been de rigueur.
August 5th, 2009 at 9:52 pmYou leftie idiots. Boy do the DEMS show just how weak we have become as a nation. When we get attacked by North Korea, China, Iran…. What are we gonna do, beat them away with our “GIVE PEACE A CHANCE” posters. This little Clinton release shows these idiots that all they have to do is say the word and we will do exactly what they tell us to do. Have a little backbone like Bush had. Obama is selling out this country, and within 12-months we will be attacked because Obama and the Dems have no idea what they are doing. GOD BLESS US ALL. Sorry about that Obama, I know that GOD is not your thing….
August 5th, 2009 at 11:25 pmIt’s really ashame that the Republicans are so hell bent on keeping this country on its belly. Clinton was chosen for a reason and, as usual, he did the United States proud. Our citizens are safe at home and who knows, Clinton’s diplomacy could very well open the doors for dialogue instead of war with NK. You know what would be a good idea, is to put Bolton, Bush, Limbaugh, Dobbs and the rest of the naysayers in the NK prison and let them rot there.
August 5th, 2009 at 11:41 pmThe right-wing can’t spin this to their advantage (not that they have one), so they’re reduced to b!tching about how getting these two journalists released is a bad thing.
That it was done by Bill Clinton only makes them madder.
August 5th, 2009 at 11:42 pmThis is a good example of right wing mean-spiritedness. These folks would rather leave two fellow citizens to rot in jail than credit anyone they consider to be political enemies. Even if my political ideology were similar (it isn’t), I would avoid right-wingers because they are so MEAN!

If it is uncovered that the administration “neogotiated” with the North Koreans in any way, it is a crime.
I’m not sure how in the world negotiating with another government for the return of a citizen could be considered a “crime”. World governments routinely intervene on the behalf of their traveling citizenry, even in egregious capital cases.
I suppose we don’t have “formal” diplomatic relations with North Korea, and they are not bound by any of the treaties that normally govern such negotiations (as far as I know), but it’s certainly not illegal for the government to allow a private citizen to negotiate a good-will release in exchange for a photo op.
And considering how often the Reagan administration intervened to negotiate release of people accused by the USSR of espionage (if I’m remembering correctly, it was more than once)…I don’t think Republicans have much room to throw stones.
These journalists were doing their job, and I’m certain they were aware of the risks they were taking. They showed extraordinary bravery and dedication to the ideals of their profession. To denigrate them as “amateurish” is to deride the efforts of the many international reporters who risk their lives on a daily basis to bring us the stories we’d rather not listen to, but MUST if we have any sense of compassion and moral obligation to others. No one but a piss-poor excuse for an “entertainer” (who does not in any way do anything to earn the title of “journalist”) would be so very insulting and babyish.
August 5th, 2009 at 11:50 pmWhile Saddam Hussein was dropping chemical weapons, Saint Ronnie Reagan sent Donald Rumsfeld to Iraq to sell him even more weapons.
The reaction from Republicans? Silence.
August 5th, 2009 at 11:58 pmNorth Korea played you libs like a drum. You probably all think Jong is now a good guy who can be nutured and persuaded to be good as long as we talk nicely to him. It’s great that the girls were saved, but this was self-serving as heck for NK. You probably also buy that the Secretary of State’s husband was on a “private” trip. My question is did Billy Boy hit on one or both of those girls on the flight back?
August 6th, 2009 at 12:08 amYOU DO realize that if North Korea held on to them, they could have used them as bargaining chips for whatever schemes they were plotting…
Typical…you assume because we’re on the left in the political spectrum, we support North Korea…
August 6th, 2009 at 12:35 amTweety says that Clinton was called on and that as usual he did our country proud!
August 6th, 2009 at 1:06 amI’m very glad those girls were brought back even if it was Bill Clinton, who played the “patsy” well I might add . But it’s amzing how so many women still love Clinton after what he humiliated his wife while in the Oval Office!
Did he set a good example of what you would want in a husband or a good man, or how about making you proud of him at that moment. Just wondering!

Sorry gforce179 but JAYUSMC is even more hilarious…
August 6th, 2009 at 1:15 amSo many Leftists here patting themselves on the back after bjbill got two women out of the backward stalinist police state? Why is it that every worthless cesspool country is either Leftist or islamic? Kim played bjbill like a fiddle and got support for his regime while building nukes.
For those who tout comrade carter, he aided the afghani coup plotters knowing that the soviets would invade afghanistan. Take a bow for starting the Taliban and al qaeda, comrades! Not content with just messing up that area of the world he handed Iran to the mad mullahs and then stuck Zimbabwe with a marxist stooge like Mugabe. Seeking more areas of the world to mess up he then got the KGB trained gay egyptian arafart’s terrorist kleptocrats running gaza and the west bank, soon dooming the residents there to chaos and mayhem, when before they’d had one of the highest standards of living in the arab world.
Katrina? Oh yeah! Corrupt Dem run N.O. didn’t bother to follow THEIR own evacuation plan which called for using school buses and city buses to evacuate the poor. Ever see the pictures of HUNDREDS of swamped and messed up buses that then had to be replaced? Parishes near by had 99% evacuation rates BUT {the CIA is out to get me} Nagin was as incompetent at Gov. Blanco, also a Dem. Wasn’t she the moron that blocked the Red Cross convoy from even entering New Orleans?
And of course a corrupt Dem run police dept…disappeared or bunkered down, THEN body-slammed aging grannies with pea-shooters to illegally confiscate weapons from law-a-biding citizens.
I hope more of you Lefties lose your jobs in Barry’s recession/depression! You hopey-changers voted for that marxist trained Jr. senator with NO executive experience as Joe Biden pointed out! How’s his on the job training going, comrades? LOL!
August 6th, 2009 at 1:28 amthat’s just bizarre…Still the addition of the LOL sort of adds a little….
August 6th, 2009 at 1:31 amIf only Newt the Cute had gone instead. He could have flashed his lasers and other swell stuff, and gotten all professorial for the media. Lil Kim would have been so impressed.
August 6th, 2009 at 1:32 amoldswede
Since energy hog al bore has made a 100 $million or so off gorebal warming, he could have paid quite a bribe. Too bad he didn’t go, or do even the NK’s think he’s as nutty as a fruitcake?

You rightwingnuts are just plain stupid. N Korea got nothing. There is no GOOD thing that morons like you wont attack just because you hate. A couple of niave women will not have to spend a decade at hard labor. That is a good thing. Anyone not a moron and with a heart of any kind knows this. You are too stupid and hardhearted to BE a human being you subhuman moron
August 6th, 2009 at 2:22 ammanifesto_pesto says:
Why is it you rightwingers are so brainwashed and stupid? A WHOLE lot of cesspool countries are VERY rightwing. You are just too stupid to have any idea what you are talking about. Guatemala kills all the lefties they can. Columbia the same. Uganda under Idi Amin. Indonesia under mass murderer Suhuarto. In fact this list is too long to deal with. You are stupid and your delusions are almost as stupid as you are. Just face facts. You were born a moron and you will die a moron. The sooner the better. Oh and you are a liar about Al Gore I notice you did the derisive nickname thing like the good little brainwashed member of the Limborg hivemind you are. So you have shown just how stupid you are you can go away now and let the adults talk
August 6th, 2009 at 2:25 amNo one is unhappy about the girls being rescued, right or left. What the “right” is unhappy about is the fact that through this “diplomacy” the United States of America broke it’s own set of regulations by negotiating with a crazy man who has now had his status arised in the world.
To call these girls jounalists is like calling a school yard fight a boxing match. They should not have been there, where they WERE. Period. The calls for them to suffer the consequences of their stupidy, and the stupidy of Al Gore to have sent them are rational. Al Gore, and these girls put the United States of America in a position to have to go and rescue them. This is quite simply another example of the liberals twisting the rules to suit themselves, and to keep the “good ole boy” network in existance. Investigate the relationships of the people involved, and the reasons that this incident occured before you start implying that we are sad over these girls “rescue”. No one is unhappy that these girls are no longer in jail. We are unhappy because, like stupid little teenagers, these girls brought the greatest nation on the face of the earth to the point of having to “bow down” to a madman. Over stupidness. If Al Gore had NOT been involved, this “rescue” would NOT have happened …admit that, and you begin to see the true face of the democratic party in America, as just another “good ole boys club”.
August 6th, 2009 at 4:09 amAl Gore put his personal problems in front of the necessities of his nation. At the very least, and I mean the VERY least, this is a misalignment of priorities.
August 6th, 2009 at 5:12 amrbecton says:
We have no such policy. This may suprise you but we dont get to CHOSE the leaders of other countries. I mean we have in the past when we overthrew democracies and installed military dictatorships but we actually showed that we suck at regime changes. So yeah he is a nut but he IS the leader of North Korea and pretending he isnt and will go away if we ignore him would be blatantly stupid. Clinton didnt trade arms for them or anything like Raygun did nor did we BOW DOWN to them, so really you dont have a point.
Do you have any evidence that no one else in the world has that Gore SENT them into North Korea? I read they strayed in reporting on orphans. So either cough up your evidence Gore SENT them to North Korea or admit you are a liar and a fool with a hatred of Gore based on you being an idiot. YOU put your delusions above truth, reality and FACTS. So grow up
August 6th, 2009 at 5:44 amThese girls work for a small magazine owned and run by Al Gore. Look it up.
Thanks for thinking you know me, but you obviously DO NOT.
August 6th, 2009 at 6:47 amSince I’m not fcking Bill Clinton, I couldn’t possibly care less where he puts his dick.
August 6th, 2009 at 6:54 amGranted that it’s a consenting adult on the receiving end.
August 6th, 2009 at 6:55 amIt’s amazing that it takes THIS topic to draw the ridiculous right-wing here.
This was a rescue effort, pure and simple. This was nothing to drop bombs on North Korea for. This was a misunderstanding that REQUIRED diplomacy. The same will be required for the three captured in Iran for wandering over the border.
You’re all just jealous that Clinton and Gore managed to do what any Republican ex-President or Vice President can’t do. You’re mad that military strength couldn’t be used.
You’re angry that the dove worked.

August 6th, 2009 at 8:12 amAfter listening to a lot of these right-wing criticisms of the freeing of the 2 journalists and the supposed negative ramifications I admit to wishing ill on others. What I wish is that some of these same people (preferrably the Fox-friends morning crew, Limbaugh and Hannity for starters) would go do a special report from the N. Korean border and make the same mistake as the 2 women did. Let them be in N. Korean prisons then the Administration can say, you know you were right all along. We shouldn’t “negotiate with terrorists”. Hope it goes ok for you the next 10-15 years in prison. Call us when you get out.
August 6th, 2009 at 8:21 amHas everyone forgotten that these people committed a crime by illegally entering a foreign country?
August 6th, 2009 at 9:20 amWhy a former President should have gotten involved is still the question here.
I guess I will go break into my neighbor’s house and when I go to jail, I will call Bill up to se if he will come get me otu.
Does it follow that invading a country on false pretenses. Oh never mind that would be different to you….
August 6th, 2009 at 9:44 amIf you are referring to Iraq “dbadass” then you are mistaken. Iraq was invaded in the TRUE BELIEF that there were WMD’s there. It is easier to be a Monday morning quarterback, than to admit that everyone on BOTH sides of the aisle were fooled by hard to interpret information.
Quit trying to deflect smarter people from the subject under discussion.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:28 pmJust so we’re clear about whether or not Al Gore was involved.
LAURA LING AND EUNA LEE ARE COMING HOME
Current Media journalists, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, who have been detained in North Korea since March 17th, will be coming home on Wednesday morning with former President Bill Clinton, who is at this moment returning from North Korea having obtained their release.
We want to thank the Obama Administration for its continuous and determined efforts to achieve this outcome, and President Clinton for his willingness to undertake this mission.
All of us at Current are overjoyed at Laura and Euna’s safe return. Our hearts go out to them – and to their families – for persevering through this horrible experience.
We will have more to say in the days and weeks ahead. But for now, all our thoughts are with Laura and Euna and their families, who have shown remarkable courage and initiative for the 140 days of this ordeal.
