Freshman Democratic lawmaker ‘physically assaulted at a local event’ by activists.

As lobbyist-run groups encourage conservative activists to “rattle” members of Congress at local town hall events, Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA), the president of the freshman Democratic class has revealed that “at least one freshman Democrat” has already been “physically assaulted at a local event.” Connolly warned that conservative groups had taken things to a “dangerous level“:

“When you look at the fervor of some of these people who are all being whipped up by the right-wing talking heads on Fox, to me, you’re crossing a line,’ Connolly said. ‘They’re inciting people to riot with just total distortions of facts. They think we’re going to euthanize Grandma and the government is going to take over.”

Recent events have given congressman good reason to be “fearful for their safety.” Last week, a protester hung an effigy of freshman Rep. Frank Kratovil (D-MD) outside his district office, and after a June 22 town hall meeting was disrupted by an “unruly mob” of tea party activists, Rep. Tim Bishop (D-NY) had to be escorted to his car by police. ThinkProgress contacted Connolly’s office regarding the identity of the congressman who was physically assaulted, but we have not yet received a response.

It’s one thing to spread lies as talking points and slogans when your main objective is to discredit the opposition simply because they’re the opposition.

But the sad thing is that many of these “rattlers” truly believe that granny’s going to get euthanized by the government if any meaningful health care reform gets passed.

And the talking heads who have given these marching orders to the gullible, obedient masses will claim no responsibility at all — that they have the right to express their “opinions”, even though they are clearly meant to misinform and inflame to suit a political agenda.

If you recall the utter madness that seethed through the crowd at McCain’s concession speech, then you’ll realize that these people are determined to undermine any leader except one they choose (and foist upon everyone else).

If there’s a revolution, it will not be started by progressives, it will be started by one or more of these ‘wingnut’, ‘teabagger’, ultra-right-wing, lunatics.

And unfortunately, given the state of the media in this country, the revolution will be televised.

That’s why they’re called Rethuglicans. W’s tax cuts were pushed through using the reconciliation process – time to start using the tactics they use when in power.

These townhall meetings should be treated just like legislative functions, and staked out by FBI agents. Conspiracy to interfere with a governmental function is a felony, and should be treated as such. If Fox is inciting these folks, they should be charged, fined, and perhaps even their broadcast license revoked.

Joe, take a look at these crowds. It is calculated that they’ve been directed to violence and mob mentality because it’s clear that anything that involved thought would be lost on them.

Each entrance to these events must have a metal detector. Add a computer and scan the IDs of each and every person who enters. Set up cameras aimed at the attendees. Record everything. That will keep most of these idiots outside of events.

I have to say that I watch the Fox newsclips and others with jaw-dropping astonishment. I find it hard to believe that people could rise to such heights in any organization who are apparently incapable of real analysis of the events they’re discussing. OR that people would be taken as credible news sources who are so obviously indulging in emotional manipulation, hyperbole and just plain babbling.

The only reason I can think of that their network honchos would air such empty “analysis” is that it makes them money and that making money is more important to them than the progress of this country and the well-being of their fellow human beings.

Robert Freeman’s prescient article last March (http://www.commondreams.org/view/2009/03/15) foretold this.

“…So what is the right wing response?

They have adopted the strategy and tactics of the failed right wing plotters in Weimar Germany. First, stoke the resentment of the population about the increasingly dire state of its living conditions-no matter that those conditions were created by the very right-wing oligarchs who now pretend to befriend the little guy. Rage is rage. It is glandular and unseeing. Once catalyzed it is easy to turn on any subject.

Second, prevent the new government from succeeding in any meaningful endeavor. The Republicans have set all their efforts to doing everything they can to make sure the Obama administration fails. Rush Limbaugh’s infamous, ‘I hope he fails’ pronouncement is only the beginning of the fomenting of hatred from the right. As Limbaugh said, ‘Let’s be honest. Every Republican in America is hoping for Obama’s failure.’…”

  54. tinythinker says:

It’s very sad. Moderate Republicans, those who are left anyway, who were of the Dwight Eisenhower kind of mold, must be beside themselves (and whatever you thought of Ike he sounds like an infinitely fair-minded genius compared to the leadership of the GOP today). Even Powell, who shed so much credibility by making Bush’s bogus case for Iraq, is considered just too “moderate” these days, which apparently means “not willing to go along with the violent conspiratorial crazies who have taken over conservatism.”

Violence betrays a lack of creativity – when you can’t make something (of your own), destroy something (someone else made). The current GOP can’t come up with any original ideas, so the game plans is obvious. Claim credit for other people’s idea while attacking those ideas (cough, stimulus) and then make sure any new opposition ideas can’t get a fair hearing.

This is not just the GOPs fault, I fear. It’s just the result of a political system in which polarization is fueled by competitive one-upmanship. One side engages in soundbyte politics, and the other side sees it works and follows suit. One side engages in hyperbole, and the other side needs to “win” so they try it too. And so it escalates until each side believes they are the sole possessor of some form of righteousness, looks at the other side, and thanks whatever they believe in they are “not like them.” The game continues, polarization increases, and the wingnuts on both sides openly embrace a visceral hatred. It was only a matter of time before this open hatred started moving into the mainstream of one of the parties.

Isn’t this why people were drawn to Obama? Because they wanted to reverse this trend and saw him as representing such change? Caving in to this kind of violence isn’t an option, but becoming more divided and divisive isn’t the solution either. It is times like these when true creativity is really needed. One example is to take the craziness seriously to expose it for what it is, like the people passing a House resolution which stated Obama was born in Hawaii (no one voted against) or the recent amendment proposed by a Democrat to end Medicare to see if Republicans had the courage of their rhetoric.

    Other ideas? Creative solutions?

What if the people being shouted down walked over to the ugliest, loudest SOB in the crowd and gave him a big hug? Can you imagine? Oh now you are shouting again? Hug. And you? Hug.

Of course, there are alternatives to hugs for those with personal space issues, but doesn’t hate seem its ugliest when contrasted with love? And doesn’t our social justice playbook, a la folks like Dr King, have love as a central theme?

    Other ideas?

Display this on a common board with white numbers painted on black squares and you make a ceremony of updating the number add anctedotal facts and faces, namesw, and stories. mention it in every opportunity! get other causes, personalities, websites to talk about it and maybe display it at events they participate in. you could get supporters to take their copy of the board to townhalls and other event that are politically connected.

The whole idea is to make this as simple and cheaply replicable so everyone can get involved. If this went viral and started showing up everywhere I think it would capture the attention of the nation. Rember the clinton deficit clock and what great commercials that made when people tried to drag their feet on his budget strategy. Backdropped with real faces and death announcements this could turn into the best tool there is for focusing the national attention a single payer system. You could even get people to do streetcorner demostrations with them. I think this is just what we need to combat the tsunami of right wing propaganda thats headed our way. 61. sponson says:

There is one essential “solution” to this and there are no shortcuts for it. If a local Democrat holds a “town hall” event, supporters of democracy must show up in equal or larger numbers to thwart those who want to shut the event down without discussion. We can talk and speculate until our democracy literally becomes a thing of the past, but that fact will never change. There are many other tactics that may enhance the containment of these fascist tactics being condoned by the corporations and the media, but there is no substitute for showing up.

I agree. Let’s go a bit further and only allow those who are represented by the Representative into the town hall meeting. There is absolutely no need for someone from another Congressional Representative’s district to attend this Congressional Representative’s district.

We have laws in this country that cover incitement to violence. To incite violence through words, actions, rhetoric, is to break the law. Those that are using their words to whip up the people into a frenzy know full well that the next step past words is to action. Violent action.

If we can’t win at the ballot box, then we should turn to the bullet box…”

They want to kill your grandma…”

    He pals around with terrorists…”

He’s not an American, its unconstitutional for him to be President…”

We’ve all heard these and more. Someone is going to get killed, and the Congress men and women touting this touting this rhetoric, the talking heads on TV and radio, will all wash their hands of it all claiming they never advocated violence. Yet in truth they have not only advocated violence but have actively encouraged it.

This needs to be stopped. It is not about free speech, because with free speech comes responsibility. Free speech does not allow for liable or perjury or yelling “Fire” in a crowded theater. Free speech ends with the potential for serious bodily injury or death of other can/will occur because of one’s words.

This has gotten well past the criminal stage and needs to end now.

We have elected our representatives, senators, and POTUS. If we don’t like what they are doing, we can change that by using our vote in the next election. If your guy didn’t win this time around, too bad, so sad, get over it. There will be another election, and another and another. We don’t always get the person we want. That is life.

  88. flag@whitehouse.gov says:

So you guys think that there is a conspiracy that is so well organized, it can show up at EVERY town hall meeting, demonstrate in front of Politicians offices, and put together tens of thousands of people for TEA parties….and PAY all of these people. People are frustrated on both sides of the political spectrum with this administration, the last administration, and the government in general for overstepping its bounds (Bush included), Wasting money (War, TARP, Stimulus Bill, Healthcare), and CONTINUING cronyism (Bush included). Obama was supposed to be the one to lead us with a transparency never before seen, by reaching out and uniting people, and bringing hope and change. There are plenty of people Left, Right, and Middle at these gatherings that are not paid or organized, but pissed off with an out of control government that is not and has not listened to the people in many, many years.

There are a number of comments about arresting people at these meetings. That sounds awfully authoritarian and fascist to me.

  89. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

Since tinythinker proposed we throw out some ideas, I will contribute something from the world of tactics.

Since we know the tactics of the tea baggers, we can use it against them. We know they are going to show up at a town hall meeting hosted by a Democratic representative so we host “special” town hall meetings.

These special meetings allow everyone in, but they do not let everyone out. Once in the door, everyone is required to show identification. People without identification or those from districts other than the congressman’s are placed in custody, quietly, one at a time.

You will need several dozen prison busses, and lots of handcuffs. Those placed in custody will be interrogated to find out if they had a legitimate reason to come to a town hall meeting that is not for them. If they do not have a legitimate reason, charge them with a felony, and give them the maximum sentence.

You could even have other filters, such as if someone presents a legitimate identification, they then have to go to the next room, where they have to go through one door if they think Obama was born in the united states, and another door if they think he was not. Of course, you detain all of the birthers, and treat them as if they were there to commit a felony.

Each of the detainees should be held without charge in a makeshift tent prison camp with a big sign in front that reads, “FEMA”. The best part of it would be that you would only have to do it once.

This is precisely how the pre-WWII German Fascists operated. Everything action the Repug party, as it stands today, has taken has a mirror image in the Fascist playbook. Guess KKKarl Rove internalized the manual, and under the PNAC/Bush criminal regime they were executing it before Obama turned up and interrupted their plans. They were so close to closing the deal with the devil, although the millions of dead or displaced Iraqis will attest to them actually finalizing the deal, that they and their outraged patron and master will do anything to conceal their true motives. On the whole, the American people are no longer as gullible and quickly taken in by the lies of the devil-worshiping neocons, and we might yet prevail and obtain a single payer health maintenance system we so desperately need. So we can expect opposition to sane civilized behavior from these crazy failure-loving clowns.

This country was not created by the wisdom or effort of the government. It was created by people who wanted to be left alone to be themselves, worship as they chose and to advance themselves as far as they could without the “help” of the government. The Federal Government has a place in our lives, as do the President, the Congress and the Supreme Court. Neither the Federal Government nor any of its parts has any business deciding for anyone what doctors to see nor counseling elderly people on suicide nor controlling health care to the degree that the new health care “reform” will do.

“Change” is not always better. Adolf Hitler was a “Change” for the German people. Change can be bad, this health care “reform” is bad.

To all of you who think that the anger expressed toward our Congress members is false or just a bunch of people doing what “talking heads” tell them to do. You are wrong. The anger is real and extremely few people do what “talking heads” tell them to do, well, maybe not so few.

I love seeing so many of you riled up and excited! What power we have! Very cool! The Constitution in action! Maybe some of you would like to read that document when you get a chance. It’s amazing how quick some of you are to take freedom of speech away from people just because they don’t share the same beliefs as you. What happened to all of you who, like me, were yelling at Bush for attempting to take away our rights and privacy in the name of security after September 11. It’s all the same…new issue….new president…SAME GAME PLAN!!

This will do no good, but I would like to make a useless attempt to enlighten you on a few facts. 1) We are not all Republicans!! I dislike Republican politicians as much as I dislike Democrats. I was and still am a very vocal critic of George W. Bush!! 2) I was at the event in St. Louis with McCaskill’s representatives last week. While people were very vocal, there was much respect and civility. There were only a very few people who were yelling over those they opposed. I can’t control those people anymore than you can control the idiots on your side. Most of all, there was NO VIOLENCE or even any threats of violence. 3) These meetings are for EVERYONE and EVERYONE has a right to voice their opinions. That’s how it works. Otherwise, you are just mindless sheep who allow the government to rule your life with no input. 4) NOBODY is paying me (or dare I say, anyone else) to show up at these events. I am an independent, free-thinking individual. I belong to no political groups or organizations. I have gone to events because I have a particular opinion I wish to represent and feel very passionately that I am correct. My anger and distrust for the government has been growing for a long time, well before I heard the name Barack Obama. We have been heading in the wrong direction for quite a while, but now things are accelerating at a much faster pace. 5) I am non-violent and do not even own any guns. AMAZING!!!! Lastly 6) I do believe we should have a plan (at the state level) for taking care of our fellow citizens who are not insured or are between jobs. However, this is NOT the right plan!!!! Read it for yourself.

So there!! I didn’t even have to resort to name-calling to make my point. How adult of me.

This is not an issue of freedom of speech, this is an issue of incitement to violence. Speak your peace man, for heaven’s sake. Be clear and concise and exorcise that right to the fullest. No one wants to take that away. No one.

However speaking to hatred, speaking to create fear, to deliberately with malice and forethought to push others towards violent acts is criminal. It is called incitement to violence. It is illegal to yell “fire” in a crowded theater when there is no fire. We all know why, because someone is bound to be seriously injured or killed.

These people are yelling fire and there is no fire. These people are pushing others into a fearful frenzy of craziness. Someone is going to get seriously hurt or killed.

I am exercising my right to speak up and voice my opinion on a very serious subject. AS I SAID PREVIOUSLY, I did not cause a disruption to any meeting and I only witnessed a handful of people being too loud for my comfort. Even those people did not cause delay or disruption to the meeting. It is acceptable to be loud and passionate at times, but people also have to listen to each other. The left has been disrupting meetings for years to make their points, it’s time for the other side to have a voice. Most of these are people who have never spoken up or protested about anything, ever.

Regardless of what happens, I will survive and life goes on. I will, however, be pleased with the fact that so many are waking up and holding the spoiled, elitist, government accountable for their actions.

Every time you post your fascist rantings, you leave a trail that will be followed right to your door. We are coming for you, and we are going to remove you from our society.

This individual believes that it is completely okay to imprison those who speak different than he would have them. And he is calling them fascist?

I detest people like this because of their glaring hypocrisy. Bill Clinton got caught with his pants down, and now we’re seeing all sorts of Republican lawmakers coming out of the woodwork being caught with theirs down as well, a few of whom were avid supporters of Slick Willy’s impeachment (although to be fair, the impeachment was regarding perjury, not for having a White House aid polish his pole on the desk of the President of the United States–which is possibly the most awesome thing to ever happen in the White House when you realize that W was forced to sit at and work on that desk afterwards).

Another great hypocrisy comes from both sides of the aisle. And you ALL are guilty of this, so don’t try to wiggle out of this one with your “but our side is right” mantra:
When the Democrats lost the House in 1994 and the election in 2000 (its over, move on), liberals blew a gasket. They couldn’t believe what had happened and were so enraged that they had crazies coming out from all parts of the woodwork trying to desperately send their message out any way they could, doing anything and everything to discredit, distort, and even outright lie to get back into power. Conservatives laughed at their “meltdown” and figured this was how it was going to be from now on… then came 2006, and 2008… role reversal in the extreme. History was (and still is) repeating itself. Conservatives are having a complete meltdown and liberals believe the party is done and are laughing about it even though they did the exact same thing not a decade before.

As far as the health care bill, I see the idiot groups with their misrepresentations about end-of-life consults for seniors as if that means euthanasia, publicly funded abortion, and rate increases for the privately insured. I laugh. So desperate are they to get people to oppose it that they lie and distort (see above). My only question regarding the bill is simple: How do they plan on paying for it? Even the Congressional Budget Office has estimated that it will add $2.2 trillion to the deficit, while Obama has made a claim of $2.7 trillion in budget cuts. No offense, but I think I will stick to what the Budget Office says, rather than a politician.

I am a conservative. A true conservative. An open-minded, free-thinking individual that would rather look at raw data to glean facts than to take the easy way because I learned early on: Believe none of what you hear, and half of what you see.

In the end, we’re all human. Stop fighting and play nice.

  128. Ed in WA says:

Here’s an email message from the DNC… and my answer:

There’s been a lot of media coverage about organized mobs intimidating lawmakers, disrupting town halls, and silencing real discussion about the need for real health insurance reform.

The truth is, it’s a sham. These “grassroots protests” are being organized and largely paid for by Washington special interests and insurance companies who are desperate to block reform. They’re trying to use lies and fear to break the President and his agenda for change.

Health insurance reform is about our lives, our jobs, and our families — we can’t let distortions and intimidation get in the way. We need to expose these outrageous tactics, and we’re counting on you to help. Can you read these “5 facts about the anti-reform mobs,” then pass them along to your friends and family?

5 facts about the anti-reform mobs

    1. These disruptions are being funded and organized by out-of-district special-interest groups and insurance companies who fear that health insurance reform could help Americans, but hurt their bottom line. A group run by the same folks who made the “Swiftboat” ads against John Kerry is compiling a list of congressional events in August to disrupt. An insurance company coalition has stationed employees in 30 states to track where local lawmakers hold town-hall meetings.

    2. People are scared because they are being fed frightening lies. These crowds are being riled up by anti-reform lies being spread by industry front groups that invent smears to tarnish the President’s plan and scare voters. But as the President has repeatedly said, health insurance reform will create more health care choices for the American people, not reduce them. If you like your insurance or your doctor, you can keep them, and there is no “government takeover” in any part of any plan supported by the President or Congress.

    3. Their actions are getting more extreme. Texas protesters brought signs displaying a tombstone for Rep. Lloyd Doggett and using the “SS” symbol to compare President Obama’s policies to Nazism. Maryland Rep. Frank Kratovil was hanged in effigy outside his district office. Rep. Tim Bishop of New York had to be escorted to his car by police after an angry few disrupted his town hall meeting — and more examples like this come in every day. And they have gone beyond just trying to derail the President’s health insurance reform plans, they are trying to “break” the President himself and ruin his Presidency.

    4. Their goal is to disrupt and shut down legitimate conversation. Protesters have routinely shouted down representatives trying to engage in constructive dialogue with voters, and done everything they can to intimidate and silence regular people who just want more information. One attack group has even published a manual instructing protesters to “stand up and shout” and try to “rattle” lawmakers to prevent them from talking peacefully with their constituents.

    5. Republican leadership is irresponsibly cheering on the thuggish crowds. Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner issued a statement applauding and promoting a video of the disruptions and looking forward to “a long, hot August for Democrats in Congress.”

It’s time to expose this charade, before it gets more dangerous. Please send these facts to everyone you know. You can also post them on your website, blog, or Facebook page.

Now, more than ever, we need to stand strong together and defend the truth.

    Thanks,

    Jen O’Malley Dillon

How long will it be until one of these “screamers” pulls out his legally concealed weapon and shoots someone. This is getting out of hand.

    I told you yesterday.

    Time to start arresting them.

Send these idiots straight to jail when they get out of line.

Time to make use of that Patriot Act that was so loved by the Republicans.

I think that it was Eldridge Cleaver who said that violence was as American as apple pie.

Funny how 6 or 7 months in this is becoming a genuine concern… yet for all the complaining Democrats and liberals did about Bush there really wasn’t anything comparable going on.

Just shows you the mentality, I guess.

This is domestic terrorism sponsored and encouraged by the Republican party and their fascist mouthpieces on talk radio. It’s time for President Obama to make a public appeal to the Republican leadership to call for and end to this unpatriotic breakdown in order within the Republican party

Response: Let’s reframe the debate here and replace the party names with the term government. While the left side would like to frame the right side of the “political” spectrum as fascist, and the right frame the left as socialist. The truth is that our founders were trying to keep our government somewhere in the center of a completely different spectrum with “tyranny” being the far left and “anarchy” being the far right. You seem to be smart people, so I won’t define those two terms. Our GOVERNMENT, both parties, is moving us towards tyranny which comes in forms such as socialism, fascism, and communism….all authoritative statist rule.

This leads me back to the point of this thread. We the people are fed up with our governments rapid move towards tyranny…whether you want to frame it as fascism or socialism. I don’t agree with Bill Maher or Rush Limbaugh who think that the American people are stupid. We know tyranny when we see it, thus we are showing up, UNPAID, to town hall meetings, TEA parties, and our leaders offices, and letting our government know that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Give us our country back.

If you right wingers think you have power now. Just wait a little while.

You will soon be screeching from behind the cars in the parking lot.

You’re losing sensible people and the fringies like you are soon to be thrown under the bus.

    good night gop.
