Steele Distances Himself From Town Hall Mobs: ‘We’re Not Encouraging People To Be Angry’

This afternoon, ThinkProgress was on a conference call hosted by RNC Chairman Michael Steele. In response to a question from The Washington Times about protests inside health care town halls, Steele distanced himself and the RNC from the protesters:

STEELE: I had nothing to do with that, I did not encourage that. And we’re not encouraging people to be angry I mean to the point of being nasty and brutish and ugly. That’s not what this is about. There’s no upside for the Republican Party or the people involved to do that. Now some people, you know, that’s how they express their frustration, that’s how they express their frustration. But that’s not something deliberately coordinated by me or any one state party.

In condemning these disruptions, Steele placed himself at odds with a number of other Republican leaders. Recently House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) promised that House Democrats would have a “very, very hot summer” when they had to face their constituents. Today, in fact, he even sent out a “GOP Leader Alert” that seemingly promoted the mob attacks on his colleagues:

boehner

Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) has gone even further, bluntly telling the press that the time for polite town halls is now “over.” The NRCC also sent out a jubilant e-mail recently that praised the disruptions as “recess roasting.”

Steele may be distancing himself now, but in the past, he has embraced astroturfing tactics. In 2006, the Maryland GOP bused in homeless people from outside the state to hand out flyers on behalf of Steele, who was incorrectly identified as a Democrat.

The Washington Independent’s David Weigel, who was also on the call, noted that Steele said the stock market improving is a direct result of Democratic legislation slowing down in Congress.

Update Earlier today, Sen John McCain (R-AZ) voiced his displeasure with the town hall mobs via Twitter: "Town hall meetings are an American tradition - we should allow everyone to express their views without disruption - even if we disagree!"

This is your creation. Live with it. And when somebody get hurt or worse, DIES, it is on YOUR heads. Already, Americans are wise to this ruse. It’s the same old, white people who made the ‘Tea-Bag Parties’ infamous. The ‘Birther’s’ whom you claim don’t speak for you (But they do!) It will be a long, hot summer for you, Repugs. try to stay cool.

  19. dasm says:

Steele: “And we’re not encouraging people to be angry I mean to the point of being nasty and brutish and ugly.”

Um, YES YOU ARE! (What a liar Steele is!) Repubs, GOP, Repub pundits, Repub lobbyists, Fox,(the Repub propaganda network)– are ALL encouraging right-wing wackos to be angry, disrupt, scream, drown out, & basically derail any meetings about health care in particular. They’re telling (& probably paying) a bunch of right-wing extremist white people (home-grown terrorists, it seems) to attack anything Obama suggests. Racism? Yes. Anti-Americanism? Absolutely. Preventing others from participating in the democratic process? You betcha. We’ve all seen the videos, we’ve all seen the REpub emails, we’ve all heard the Repub pundits all call for disruption, anger, & hate. Please don’t deny it– you already look like a fool & this just adds to it. And all those GOP/Repub clips, emails, etc.– they’re ALL recorded forever. You’ll never be able to hide from the GOP orchestrated hatred & disruption of democracy. Repubs have revealed themselves as the hateful, ignorant, petulant, bullying, lying “party of no”. No improvement, no change, no honesty, no love of country, no facts, no plan, no suggestions. And no pretense whatsoever of honoring the American Constitution.

  20. RantingTommy says:

amazing how gullible these morons are that really believe the lies coming from FOX and the rest of the right wing mainstream media

they never factcheck, even though it is easy to do

they never even consider the effect all the ads that are purchased from the news media channels by pharmaceutical and health insurance companies has on the coverage of the issue

ignorant and stupid, they are the ones outside the castle yelling “it’s ok, everybody! we can just eat cake!”

(sorry for the repost, bad tab management in Firefox on my part, doh!)

  21. gummble-bee-itch says:

For decades, the Right has made a huge issue of how Leftists don’t believe in free speech, because a few of them show up at campus speeches by Ann Coulter or John Bolton and are disruptive–yelling at the speaker until they get tossed out. The Right has been claiming for years that this proves that the Left isn’t interested in real dialog and not willing to listen to other points of view.

And now we get organized disruption on a grand scale, and the Tracy’s of the world argue that this is perfectly appropriate behavior, because otherwise no one will listen.

Doesn’t that seem a little, uh, hypocritical?

Why does anyone care about this hysterical, whining, lying group of cry-babies? They’re like 1 year-olds who had their soother taken away. 33. Marie says:

CNN must prefer to cover the mob rule at town hall meetings — they refuse to air an ad targeting the insurance industry.

The network — already taking criticism for declining to run an ad criticizing Lou Dobbs — is now refusing to run an ad nationally criticizing the insurance industry…

CNN’s reason: The ad “unnecessarily” singles out a top insurance industry executive by name for criticism.

The labor-backed Americans United for Change tried to book time on CNN and MSNBC for the ad, which hits the insurance industry for wanting to preserve the status quo and levels harsh criticism at insurance giant Cigna’s CEO, Ed Hanway.

“Why do insurance companies and Republicans want to kill health insurance reform? Because they like things the way they are now,” the ad says, and then slams Hanway’s annual salary of over $12 million and golden parachute retirement package of over $70 million.

CNN emailed the following reason for rejection:

“This ad does not comply with our clearance guidelines because it unnecessarily singles out an individual company and person.”

That very well may be CNN’s policy…
AUC argues, the industry is made up of companies that are run by individuals deciding how to spend huge money to impact the health care debate — so why are they off limits?

“The bottom line question is: Would CNN run ads from Cigna that are positive about the company?”
“If yes, why would they turn down an ad critical of the company for their role in trying to kill health insurance reform?”
MSNBC will run the ad starting tomorrow.

BTW, rumor has it that Dobbs is looking at moving to Fox – don’t have any idea if it’s true, but he’d be more “at home” there.

PaladinofPeace, WRONG. The people at these town hall meetings listen to Glenn Beck in the morning and at night, they listen to Fox News, and they run to their basements in fear every time Sean Hannity screams, “Socialists!”, after clicking his jackboots together at George Bush’s picture every night. These people are mainly dumb, uneducated, buffoons who are love fear because without it, they can’t explain what is going on, don’t know how to get to the truth (and Beck & Fox refuse to give it to them!), and only know how to react and their response to what they’re hearing (lies) is fear which is making them react. Fear is the fuel to their irrational rage! They have no idea they’re being lied to, they have no idea how they’re being used by the very people who always screw them over in the end, and they just don’t understand the basics of anything. Hell, these are the people who think they understand the laws of our country and claim they’ve read the US Constitution! Wrong! I know silly. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/17/obama-boost-new-poll-show_n_217175.html

New poll numbers from NBC/Wall Street Journal produce two major and potentially conflicting story lines when it comes to the Obama administration’s efforts for a health care overhaul. On the one hand, the American public overwhelmingly favors a choice between getting insurance coverage either through the private market or a government run option. Indeed, 76 percent of respondents said it was either “extremely” or “quite” important to “give people a choice of both a public plan administered by the federal government and a private plan for their health insurance.”

  125. KayInMaine says:

Uh Jay? Moron? No one is going to come to your house if anyone reports your bullsh*t to the White House. What will happen is the White House (or Linda Douglass) will see a pattern of lies being told to the public by you, Beck, and Dobbs (married to an illegal alien. No birth vault certificate viewed publicly yet) and the White House will then post a piece on their website pointing out the truth WITH LINKS TO THE ACTUAL DOCUMENTS.

See how that works? It’s kind of like a poll. If they get 8,000 emails about how “President Obama is going to use guns to kill old people when they reach the age of 79 to keep health care costs down” out of 10,000 emails, well, that would be the moment they would want to GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT!

Jay, provide the link of truth to your point that when someone emails the White House with one of your right wing lies, you will get a visit from the police. Surely you must have a White House link to back your statement of “fact” up with!

The fact that even after being led by the hand through something that would be obvious to any reasonably bright six year old you STILL dont get that only shows how incredibly stupid you are. It isnt nonsense just because it shows that once again you NEVER know what you are talking about. The poll shows that 76% of the people back a public auction and if you think things have changed that much in the last two months then cough up the poll that shows this or STFU if for no other reason than to stop humiliating yourself. Do however keep snivelling like the punk you are about our name calling after the contempt dripping from your posts talking about out dribbling and such. You are a punk. jay says:
Now, where in the document does it say that this administration seeks to eliminate private insurers?

No that was in a speech by Obama.

“If I were designing a system from scratch, I would probably go ahead with a single-payer system,” Obama told some 1,800 people at a town-hall style meeting on the economy.

    So let’s recap:

jay embraces a statement made by the President a year ago as current gospel, yet rejects the findings of a poll less than two months old that has yet to be superseded by another.

That’s about par for jay’s course.

(oh, and jay conveniently neglects to include the completion of the then-candidate’s statement:

If I were designing a system from scratch, I would probably go ahead with a single-payer system,” Obama told some 1,800 people at a town-hall style meeting on the economy.

A single-payer system would eliminate private insurance companies and put a Medicare-like system into place where the government pays all health-care bills with tax dollars.

But we’ve got all these legacy systems in place, and managing the transition, as well as adjusting the culture to a different system, would be difficult to pull off. So we may need a system that’s not so disruptive that people feel like suddenly what they’ve known for most of their lives is thrown by the wayside.’

    Imagine that.)

Unfortunately, Jay is probably out in the real world, masquerading as a human. This is one of the problems in identifying the fascist theocrat Republicans that are about to go ballistic and start shooting people. They go about their lives pretty much like everyone else, and when they express their wingnuttery, they are outcast by their contemporaries.

Eventually people like Jay snap and then start shooting. We really need to get these fascists out of our society and into a nice prison where they can get deprogrammed. And we need to stop the propaganda before more people die.

  292. EugeneDebs says:

    Jay

There are three competing bills STILL moron. Why waste my time reading what is still basically in the negotiation stage? NONE of them are advocating a single payer plan. THAT bill HR 676 I HAVE read. It is great. It also doesnt have enough support to get out of comittee unfortunatly. YOU. ARE. STUPID. You dont know what you are talking about Obama is NOT advocating a single payer system. He has said he supporsts one but doesnt want to scrap what we have to start over so all he is advocating is a public option. Its that simple. I am sorry. I simply cant dumb it down any further. I dont know what part of that you are just flat too stupid to understand

  297. RantingTommy says:

there are only 3 possibilities here:

    1. jay is lying – plausable, but I think he really believes what he is saying, which is pathologically ignorant, but he believes it nonetheless

    2. jay is stupid – most likely scenario, he just can’t understand the words on the page and so he fills in what his brain misses with the propaganda he is fed by the right wing corporate mainstream media

    3. jay is kidding – least likely scenario – he doesn’t appear to have the intellectual capacity for humor beyond simple slapstick and racial bigotry

    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Single payer isnt nonsense it works in most of the rest of the industrial world but Obama doesnt want to scrap our entire system to start over. This is simple. Only a low level moron as stupid as you cant see that this makes sense.

A single-payer system would be financed by eliminating private insurers and recapturing their administrative waste. Modest new taxes would replace premiums and out-of-pocket payments currently paid by individuals and business. Costs would be controlled through negotiated fees, global budgeting and bulk purchasing.
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Yes that is how it would work. There would be other savings that I wont go into since you being too stupid to even understand what we ARE talking about are FAR too stupid to take through them. That really isnt relevant though since Obama isnt ADVOCATING A SINGLE PAYER SYSTEM. There IS a bill in the house that does. HR 676 Obama has not supported it nor even MENTIONED IT.
    We will see.

You are pretty closed minded aren’t you.

From what I understand, the repugs are worried that a government run healthcare system would put insurance companies out of business. Dont you think that insurance companies worried about going under would be a huge benefit for most Americans?
If they have competition then they might have to put their policy holders first and profits second.
If a major insurance company folds because of gov. run healthcare alot of people would lose their jobs. No one wants to see that happen. So that should give the insurance companies more incentive to put their holders first. Sick people would get the treatment that they deserve and paid for,and their employees would be able to retain their jobs.
Most of all every single American will be able to sleep better at night knowing that they have health insurance.
You know what they say the better you sleep at night the more productive you are at work. That will mean less manhours lost everyday at the workplace.
It looks like a win,win for every one.

A decent post. Without contempt or derisive insults. Telling us what you THINK. If you did that from the beggining instead of regurgitating talking points you would have been treated differently.

Sure. I doubt there IS a perfect system. By the way SOME countries DO cover everyone citizen or no but that is another conversation. Yeah. I doubt single payer is the answer to all problems. The thing is for profit healthcare causes several contradictions. First the only way to maximize profits, which at its base is the agenda for all businesses they have to become healthcare denial systems. Second. Those without healtchare are funneled away from the much less expensive preventative care into the MONUMENTALLY expensive end of life critical care. 18,000 people a year DIE from lack of access to healthcare in this country and that is most likely a lowball figure. Half of all bankrupcies are from medical causes and more than half of them started with health insurance. This is another way healthcare insurance screws YOU to get their profits. They link to your job. So if you get REALLY sick or chronically sick you miss work lose your job and they no longer cover you. Those without insurance drive up the cost of those WITH insurance so our heavy industries subsidize them and put us at a competitive disadvantage with our biggest competitors which have national healthcare plans so their corporations only pay a tax. A set cost rather than getting jacked up 10% in a year by the insurance corporations because they lost money in the stock market. The EASIEST way to alleviate all these unacceptable problems would be single payer but with a public option at least a few of them would be addressed. We MUST get a universal coverage. It is not acceptable to allow people to DIE of being poor, that is a first step ALL of those things must be addressed. I suppose a mixed system can do that but it means regulation and laws MAKING insurance companies take better responsibility for the entire healthcare of their patients

Prices would go down because they have nowhere else to go genetic disease and certain pre conditions should be allowed but if i exercise and eat right why should i pay more for some fast food eating smoker that’s only exercise is lifting the tv changer. also get ride of employer runned insurance why shuold you not own your own insurance. Its not right that if you switch jobs your lose insurance, this would raise wages and with better competition you could get a great plan for a good price and there would be a focus on healthy living.

THEY DIE. They get sent home to die. You are ignorant it really is that simple.

As to your next post you wouldnt know a fact from an igloo MORON.

You continue with the rightwing talking points that will not address the problems. That is 18,000 people a year dying from lack of access to healthcare. That half of all bankrupcies are healthcare related and more than half of those had healthcare when their problems began. The competitive disadvantage our industries haveing to provide healthcare when our foriegn competitors are in countries with single payer so that burden ISNT on them. That our healthcare is joined with our jobs so if we get a chronic illness or something that makes us miss too much work we lose our jobs AND our healthcare. Rush isnt going to tell you what to think about the real problems so you are never going to have the slightest idea how to address them. I have learned a valueble lesson from this website you cant debate a koolaid drinking liberal cause no matter what they are right. It will very intresting to see the results in 2010 I suspect a huge gop comeback and liberal tears then Obamas experiment of socializing the United States might be interupted. You all say its not socialism well when the government runs the automotive industry the banking industry the morgage companies, your health care and taxes the rich so that he can give to the poor, bankrupt the United states. Obama has spent more money in six months than Bush did in eight years and he spent way to much. You can’t spend money you dont have.

  374. jddarr66 says:

Its a dangerous moment when a democratic society tries to quell the voice of the American people. Regardless of which side your on, the opportunity to voice opinions, as long as it is within the confines of the law, is a precious right not embraced by every country. The same rights that allow people to protest at town hall meetings are the same rights that allowed people to protest at funerals of our fallen soldiers during the Iraq war. It is also the same rights that allowed people to protest the Vietnam war. I sincerely hope we are not arguing that it is ok to protest as long as it is in keeping with a certain “agenda”. So what is the solution to the boistrous health care town hall meetings? How about locking up protestors as we did in the 60’s. Spray the protestors with water cannons?

To accuse the RNP of manufacturing the protests is about as fair as accusing the DNP of manufacturing evidence to support their side.

I make these comments without identifying which “side” I’m on. At this point in my life, I’m not on anyone’s side. I distrust our legislatures. For the last 20 years we have had to settle for the better of two evils when it comes to candidates. I have not read Obama’s health care reform bill and I’m not about to throw stones at something in which “I do not have “all the facts” and I certainly will not refer to his bill as being “stupid” yet.”

The side I am on is for the American people to have the best leadership, the best plans and the best opportunity to succeed. I honestly do not believe what we have in Washington is capable of achieving. I think there is too much corruption and too much deception. If a health care reform bill is passed and it most assuredly takes money from our pockets, it better be the best money can buy and not just “suck less” than the present system.

    Thank you,

sure he really got us by CROPPING Obamas quote and entirely changing its meaning. I guess he thought WE were as stupid as the two of you and wouldnt KNOW he was a lying sack of crap. He was too stupid to know what Obama was saying and when he was taken apart like a cheap watch by showing what Obama REALLY said IN CONTEXT, he ignored it and ran away. How ignorant and brainwashed do you have to be to pretend that made sense AFTER he was utterly demolished on that weak attempt at a point? I mean just how stupid ARE you anyway? I am curious would someone have to be as stupid as YOU to be brainwashed by this idiocy? Fold it up moron. You guys are WAY too stupid to be taken seriously

Eugene, I think you are a long winded idiot. You deal in insults and are a fine example of a left wing moron.

Really? I know you are but what am I? Thats the best you can do? Go back to the third grade playground. You are way out of your league here.

Of course that is just my opinion.

Sure who gave it to you? Look you are stupid. It isnt our fault. You were born a moron and you will die a moron. Time fo come to terms with your disability. The sun will never dawn on the day you will be capable of higher brain function. Thanks for the free clown show. I love to laugh at people as stupid as you.
    Pathetic? Yes. :)

  378. EugeneDebs says:

You are a liar ProudMoron. You have never learned anything in your LIFE. You not only cant debate liberals you cant debate at ALL. Regurgitating what Rush told you to think isnt debating. You are too stupid to think for yourself. Higher brain function is necessary for debate and you are NEVER going to have the intellectual capacity to pull that off.

Look up the word socialism its embarassing when you show how stupid you are because you use words and dont know what they mean. The government is NOT nationalizing healthcare moron. MY GOD you are stupid.

You really are an idiot. It isnt about trying to stop people giving their opinions CAN YOU READ? They are disrupting these meetings they are TOLD to disrupt them and the e-mail FROM THE RNC telling them to disrupt these meeting early NOT to have an intelligent debate have already been shown. Since you CLEARLY have no idea what you are talking about I skipped the rest of your post. Try haveing some dim idea what you are talking about before embarassing yourself further.

  380. coord_xfrm says:

jddarr66 – there may be few plants (no, not pot!) in a town-hall meeting here or there but for the most part there’s just a bunch of pissed-off people. It won’t matter how they are labeled – they’ll still be po’d. In fact – the more they are seen as just a bunch of Republican lackies the more po’d they’ll become. Neither the politicians (on both sides of the isle) nor the Left really get it – yet. They see everything as some phony, orchestrated, show since that’s how they operate and is all they understand. They probably haven’t seen or can’t remember genuine populace outrage – at least since the anti-Vietnam mass movements in the late 60s and early 70s. I know a populace revolt in the making when I see one, having been part of one before, and now, once again, the government is going to learn a couple lesson in Principles of Government 101: don’t ram shit down the throats of an unwilling people and don’t steal their money to use for political self-empowerment!

Oh my…you hurt my feelings. Honestly, I expected a bit better response than just name calling. I guess anyone who’s opinion is different from yours is an idiot. I wont resort to that level except to say the education system isn’t what it used to be.

All I have seen on the internet regarding Obama’s plan is biased commentary from both sides or rhetoric from Obama’s office website. I dont want fluff, I want concrete information.

Ok, I’m so hurt by Eugene’s comments I have to go lay down…or maybe I’ll do a Youtube video with a flash light and the covers over my head…”Leave jddarr66 alone!!” ;-)

I dont care what you feel. I am not trying to hurt your feelings. I am not going to cry if they are hurt. You started your post with a talking point that showed CLEARLY that you dont understand at ALl what you are talking about. It isnt about silencing dissent. I love dissent. They arent dissenting they are DISRUPTING. Then you made a plain idiotic statement about it being unfair to accuse the RNC of manufacturing these problems when the memo from them was SHOWN. AGAIN it says to disrupt early. It says directly NOT to engage in intelligent debate the very thing you are trying to portray these people as trying to have. You can do that then pretend you are being reasonable but it ISNT reasonable. If you dont know what you are talking about and just want to tell us what some radio screechmonkey TOLD you to think then you being an idiot. It really is that simple. ALL the criticisms of this ARE about the disruption NOT the dissent, NOT giving other opinions. So why not stop with the strawman argument that wastes our ti8me and make a real contribution or just go away and let the adults talk

    Eugene,
Tsk Tsk…such hostility! I’m really amazed you are incapable of disagreeing with people without using insults which must be an IQ thing and is no fault of your own. You were born this way. For the record, you didn’t hurt my feelings. You do not know me, but I love to stir the pot. I obviously struck a nerve with you and I enjoy that immensely. So please, keep it up. I really enjoy it.

Seriously, I have to wonder if it’s only disruptive because it doesn’t match the agenda of the party in charge and is a threat to health care reform in general. The American people are angry and they are letting their feelings boil over at these meetings. They want their voices to be heard and they are tired of politicians cramming stuff down their throat. This is a very passionate issue and people want to know what they are getting and how it will affect them.

By the way, I hardly listen to politically based radio programs as a means of shaping my views as you have charged. I assume you are talking about Glen Beck, Rush and others just as I hardly listen to the liberal stations such as Air America. Yes, I have heard of such stations and radio personalities. I get too angry at the hypocrisy of each side to listen for very long.
