Crowd laughs and applauds at Rep. Akin’s comment about lawmakers almost being ‘lynched’ at town halls.

At a “Freedom Conference” meeting earlier this week, Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) mentioned that some Democratic lawmakers were almost “lynched” by angry protesters around the country at town hall meetings. In response, the crowd loudly laughed and applauded. Akin then lightly said that “we dont want to” approve lynchings, which generated more laughter:

Different people from Washington, DC have come back to their districts and had town hall meetings, and they almost got lynched. (APPLAUSE)

I assume you’re not approving lynchings, because we don’t want to do that. (LAUGHTER)

Watch it:

GOP lawmakers have been tacitly endorsing — and sometimes outright encouraging — these angry mobs to confront Democratic lawmakers in their districts. Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) has said that the time for polite town halls is “over,” and House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) has said that Democrats will have a “very, very hot summer.”

This bill, previously introduced in Congress in 2007, seeks to expand upon the 1969 US federal hate-crime law by extending beyond federally-protected activities and towards bodily crimes motivated by a victim’s actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability, in addition to the current provisions of bodily crimes motivated by a victim’s actual or perceived race, color, religion, and national origin. It would also codify and expand the funding and investigative capabilities of federal officials for aiding their local counterparts.

You sound a great deal like Trent Lott on election night, 1996 — when, despite state after state re-electing Bill Clinton, he maintained that Bob Dole would eventually emerge the victor, the GOP would strengthen their majorities in both houses, and we’d get our economy (which was booming at the time) “back on track”.

In other words, boastful trash talk such as yours doesn’t have to make sense, and most of us see it for what it is.

They are fanning the flames of bigotry through their manipulative, disingenuous association of Obama, Congressional Democrats, and liberals in the general populace with terms such as “Socialist”, “Communist”, “Fascist” and “un-American”.

These hate-mongers have been encouraging their listeners and constituents to “take up arms” against those with whom they disagree, and also to direct their rage at non-English speaking immigrants, suggesting that these minorities are violent vermin engaging in criminal enterprises. Referring to abortion clinic workers as “baby killers” is apt to incite violence as well.

These demagogues claim to speak on behalf of most Americans, but they actually are primarily drawing the right-wing fringe to their cause. The Aryan Brotherhood, the KKK, the John Birch Society, etc regard themselves as their peeps.

The more that these bombastic, bellicose, self-serving commentators and politicians promote a message of hatred and fear about Obama and his policies, the greater the probability that yet another wacko extremist will take their message too literally and respond violently against anyone who they feel is not “pro-America” in their eyes.

From what I can see there are two Americas – 1 that wants goverment to completely take care of them and 2 the American that wants to pay as we go, take care of our own.

Under which category falls the financing of two foreign wars, massive corporate welfare and tax cuts for the wealthy by borrowing from China?

Seems to me that’s neither “wants the government to take care of us” nor “wants to pay as we go”.

Dammit, let me try that again with better formatting:

Attended the Akin ‘Freedom Forum’ local campus police were near the doors and a personal data card had to be filled out and tendered in order to enter the venue.

There should have been no fears, the crowd was very friendly – the only signs I saw said ‘Socialisn is Bad’ or along those lines.

Interesting and sad that Akin – a prostate cancer survivor – said that those with or have to deal with cancer “will not like the Obama plans” – so much for cancellations or non-acceptance! For the record, this was one of his ‘crowd pleasser – misleading statements – when in fact he does support many items included in the ‘Obama Plans’ = from his website “If an individual is currently insured, they cannot be dropped by a health insurance company due to a pre-existing condition.”

While ’socialized healthcare’ was booed – no questions were asked how many attendees were currently on Medicare. It would probably have been embarassing to see the results if the attendees were truthful. Or painful if no one raised a hand . . .

Sometimes I think about going to a GOPers town hall and standing and shouting and interrupting and demand that they speak out against the hooliganism. Put them on the spot and demand that they speak for civility.

Of course, that would be, er, “ironic.”

What is ironic is that I am a registered Dem as is my family and most of our neighbors, we all went to the last town hall meeting and heard from many other registers Dems who are not at all happy with what is going on. You may well be a registered Democrat, but you sure don’t sound like a liberal.

  118. ralph the wonder llama says:

Oh, and… you being a “registered Dem” and being “not happy at all with what is going on” is not ironic.

Look up the definition of “irony” the next time you want to use it.

    trojten says:

What is it with you REALLY stupid people who think you can read minds through a moniter screen? I make fun of the stupid in your post and you go straight to I am angry? Oh its what Rush told you to think isnt it that us lefties are all angry? I love to laugh at people as stupid as you. Its fun. Its how I amuse myself. Why would I be mad at you? You give me a free clown show. So now you are assuming facts not in evidence are you going to go down the list of logical fallacies and show us examples of each one?

  120. EugeneDebs says:

    trojten says:

Sure lots of dems are not happy about things. That is why Obama STILL has an approval rating above sixty percent. You are HILARIOUS

You mean those “Democrats” want the Democratic members of Congress one step closer to death? *shocked

  124. UCSBKitty says:

are you that ashamed to run away from the GOP label? First, we have libertarians, then independents, former Dems, and then a so-called atheist, and now you, a registered Dem…There are plenty of Dems and liberals who are not pleased with President Obama, but they don’t need talking points and memos from lobbyists and corporations to express that anger and they actually have legitimate grassroots concerns such as Obama’s stance on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, etc. What do you guys have? OMG Obamacare will KILL our parents as if the health insurance companies’ culture of denial won’t first…

The REAL Americans have started to express their displeasure with this Socialist Administration already…and it is only going to grow until we remove this terrible group of idiots from power!

The only terrible group of idiots I see is the bunch of teabagger hooligans disrupting these town hall meetings and cheering on the violence, too stupid to think for themselves and too stupid to see the irony that many of them have Medicare yet rail against a public option and single-payer…There’s a reason why Glenn Beck asked you guys to chill, and it’s not because he legitimately fears for the safety of the Democrats, it’s because he doesn’t want any of you unhinged people shooting someone and “ruining the cause.”

what this Republican doesn’t realize is that lynching is no laughing matter and he and the bunch of thugs in the audience have trivialized the word and trivialized the deaths of thousands of African-Americans at the hands of racists…the video on Firedoglake makes it look worse than what we’re reading here…I encourage every one of you to see it.

Yeah, Limbaugh encouraged a lot of you idiots to register as Democrats to disrupt things.

  132. wiley says:

When people laugh at the thought of lynching, they are clearly not identifying with the person being “lynched”. Here comes the liberals have no sense of humor thing, right?

The lack of couthe in the Bush administration seems to have concentrated in a much smaller group now.

  133. Blaidd Drwg says:

Pags2 @ #16 says that the only problem with these tactics is that they will eventually be used against Republicans – quite true, and when they are, the right-wing blogosphere and right-wing radio will be screaming for blood, charging conspiracy, treason, and incitment to riot – not to mention playing the ever-ready race card.

  134. ohioboy says:

I didn’t realize that we were far enough away from actual lynchings to be able to laugh at them. Or is it that only those of us who were alive in the 50s and 60s who laugh at a ‘lynching’ joke didn’t really care much about what was going on at the time? There’s your republican voters.

I wonder if the ‘laugh squad’ was bussed in for this particular meeting, or if this is the standard MO voter… either way it is appalling

Yeah, and I guess it is only ‘cute’ when republicans do that. When liberals disrupt meanings they are labeled as degenerate potheads and arrested. Maybe if you protest while looking the part of the average rural American… you know, a nice pair of jorts (jean shorts) and a big, gaudy American Flag polo, a mustache, and a bag of fireworks… then you’ll pass for one of them.
