At a contentious town hall meeting last week, Rep. David Scott (D-GA) shot back at the protesters who were disrupting his event by accusing them of “hijack[ing]” the gathering. Now, Scott’s district office in Smyrna, GA, has been vandalized with a four-foot swastika painted onto his door. Fox News reported that Capitol Hill police will likely be launching an investigation immediately. Watch it:
Just yesterday, Glenn Beck went off on a rant against Scott on his Fox News show:
BECK: Congressman, how many Americans…have called and called and called, only to be treated like swine?
You know what? I’m not sure, Congressman, if you are aware that not everybody has access to a brand new Gulfstream G550. I mean, it might be tough for the average Joe, who makes $129,000 less than you do to swing by the office for a meeting in Washington, D.C. We hope you understand and accept our offer instead to use a common alternative to private jets that are so much better for the environment called the telephone.
America, you call your congressman. You call just — the congressman that represents you. You call your senator right now. Is that — there is the House switchboard right there.
Oh yeah… the Tea Baggers got REAL class…
It’s only a matter of time before something truly tragic happens.
Thank you Rush Limbaugh.

August 11th, 2009 at 11:26 amQuestion…
When someone, like Scott, finally does get hurt or killed, can POSs like Limbaugh or Beck be charged w/ something akin to inciting?
August 11th, 2009 at 11:27 amSatan is smiling…
August 11th, 2009 at 11:27 amLeave it to conservatives to continue to blame the victim.
It really is crafty of Beck et al to blame the Reps and Senators for this behavior.

I know it’s probably a rhetorical question but… when big and tough NBA and NFL players earn 100 times what scientists, teachers and researchers earn, you’re not exactly breeding a smart population.
Not the only cause, obviously, but I think it’s something to be considered.
August 11th, 2009 at 11:37 amI guess we should be grateful that they didn’t just burn a freakin’ cross on the lawn…
August 11th, 2009 at 11:38 amSome of these comments are correct something bad will happen as was in the pass. We saw three young man leave to help minorities sign up to vote, only to learn they were killed by the KKK. Color nor Race didn’t matter as these were three good human beings. A little boy with a smile saw a lady who happen to be White as he said she was so pretty, which she was. Later that night the child was kidnapped and murdered for saying the White Lady was pretty. A woman from New York volunteer to help blacks fill out forms to vote in the South. Her name was Viola and she was White. She came to the South and was murdered. This is how the KKK gathers it’s followers and recruits more people. We’re not born with Hate we’re taught Hate. But for many young Americans you are seeing just a little of our pass and the left over old Law Makers/People who just have hate in their hearts and needed a Leader to call them out of their holes. Yes we now know this time the Leader is Rush Limbaugh a drug addicted and pervert in charge of the Republican Party.
August 11th, 2009 at 11:44 amso, now we’ll get the half-hearted ‘oh don’t resort to violence and vandalism *wink wink*’ from Beck and Limbaugh so that when it gets worse, they can say they tried to stop it
August 11th, 2009 at 11:44 amI’ve gotta think that Mittens is having many sleepless nights trying to figure out how he will distance himself, and his religion, from Beck and his racist rants.
I don’t know many Mormons who would support the message that Beck is sending.
PEACE
August 11th, 2009 at 11:45 amRepublic of Stupidity: When will the right wing media be held accountable when something violent happens? You mean like how Bill O’Reilly was held accountable when the abortion doctor who O’Reilly regularly attacked was murdered? Like that?? Our mainstream media is complicit in all of this and does little to counter the radical right foot soldiers and their corporate whore leaders in Congress.
August 11th, 2009 at 11:45 amThis is just gonna get worse…
August 11th, 2009 at 11:45 amThe only conclusion I can come to is that we desperately need to teach critical thinking in schools and conduct voter education classes in communities. Maybe then people will be able to think for themselves when someone invokes “death panels”, and maybe even stop voting in spineless pinheads that can’t stand up and denounce the likes of Beck and Limbaugh.
August 11th, 2009 at 11:46 amgo ahead Jackie number 20- tell it like it is !!!
August 11th, 2009 at 11:49 amNice to see man of the people Beck talking about folks who don’t have access to a Gulfstream. Considering how much psycho-Glenn makes inciting lunatic rednecks I doubt he flies commercial these days. Time to go after his sponsors again.
August 11th, 2009 at 11:49 amWhy hasn’t HomeLand sercurity talked to Beck? If he mentioned this guy on his program? And what ‘Average Joe’ earns $129,000 a year? How clueless can you get?

August 11th, 2009 at 11:51 ambarfly@30, Intellegence is in short supply with these Wing-Nuts.
August 11th, 2009 at 11:53 amStLuke says: Our mainstream media is complicit in all of this and does little to counter the radical right foot soldiers and their corporate whore leaders in Congress.
Exactly my thought, StLuke, as I watched the national news on two of the major non-Faux networks last night and both described the lunatic fringe rantings at town halls as “protests by citizens”. Until the corporate-controlled networks start telling the truth about these republic fascist party- and insurance company-instigated disruptions of healthcare town hall meetings, the average citizen who doesn’t know any better will think there really are two rational views on this whole issue. Sorta like the global warming deniers being described in the MSM and the press as having “another view” rather than as distorting the truth or telling outright lies…
Bill Mahr is right — much of America is stupid, and on that point there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being part of the “intellectual elite” (whatever that is) and doing whatever is necessary to protect this great country and its founding principles…
August 11th, 2009 at 11:54 amYou’d think that with health care being a top news item, there would be more than 9 hits on news searches for this:
http://cbs2.com/local/health.dental.eye.2.1123028.html
CBS did a high profile piece on the one in Wise, Virginia but can’t get a news crew into downtown LA?
August 11th, 2009 at 11:54 amP.D. says: And what ‘Average Joe’ earns $129,000 a year?
I can think of one ‘Average Joe’ who’s probably earning more than that right now, P.D. — only his name isn’t really “Joe” and he isn’t really a plumber…
Just sayin’…

August 11th, 2009 at 12:07 pmI have friends across the entire political spectrum, from the hippie-child type to the deeply conservative Christian and, frankly, racist. But one friend in particular phrased the Republican party thusly: Self-describing Republicans are either stupid, naive or evil.
The scary part is, I have never seen a conservative that didn’t have one of these three qualities. Dick Cheney and private industry CEO’s? Evil. Congressional apologists and citizens that will gladly pass around misinforming e-mails as “fact”? Naive. And, pertaining to this issue, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin and the “screamers”? So very, very stupid.
Beck and Palin have no cognitive ability to foresee the effect of their “free speech” until violence is directly traced back to them, days later. Some, like Limbaugh, will refuse to acknowledge their effect on the town halls and will lap up the viewership and profits from his program like an ego-fueled dog. But, of course, Limbaugh’s big enough to be both evil and stupid.
But, man, these town hall “screamers”… they’re ratcheting up the threats, hate speech and violence. They’re like Bizarro Americans; they figure the only way to save “their country” is to destroy it. And, of course, they’re too stupid to realize that their local actions backfire on a national stage.
August 11th, 2009 at 12:10 pmpastcaring,
I think it was misplaced.
Not because it wasn’t in all probability, wildly accurate, but because I think rising above their crap, is the better path to victory.
Now those responsible for this crime, need to be found and prosecuted. They are criminals. That’s what we should call them. But don’t act like the other side by name calling. It makes us look as small as they are.
I understand the anger we feel about this as well. I hate to bring up Gandhi, but he had it right. Let shame win. Anger rarely gets votes. The people will see that these idiots are wrong. And we will win the day by exposing them for who they are. But if we name call as they do, then the country will think that every is to blame and no one is to be trusted.
August 11th, 2009 at 12:11 pmIt would be wonderful to require every single attendant to these meetings to submit their name and address…when they act up, throw them out, and then strip those who have it, of their medicare–you know, that socialist program run by the government…

August 11th, 2009 at 12:21 pmI agree with the Ghandi and the MLK approach, but they most definitely did call out their opponents and the tactics that were being used. They have shown that you don’t have to name-call to tell the truth of what is happening…but you do have to tell the truth of what is happening…that means if they are using tactics that the KKK used or the third reich used, then say it, but say it clearly. It’s not our fault that these people are using tactics straight out of the KKK-Nazi playbook, we shouldn’t be afraid to call it for what it is…

August 11th, 2009 at 12:50 pmWell, the witless turd that smeared Rep. Scott’s door is almost certainly a racist. Whether it’s an old-line KKK/WCC type racist or one of the recent variety that’s been showing up calling liberals and progressives Nazis is another matter, not that there’s any useful difference, although if it’s a young one, perhaps it can be redirected, or at least convinced that it shouldn’t act out.
I don’t see any point to taking a cheap shot at Mr. Scott for getting a ride in a Gulfstream. The aircraft may either be one of the AF VIP fleet birds or it might be one of Gulfstream’s own corporate birds. Gulfstream Aero is HQ’ed in GA, and while their production operations are in Savannah and Brunswick, I wouldn’t be surprised if they give hops to anyone in the GA delegation. I expect that the GA delegation is aware of the travel and reimbursement rules.
Has Beck checked into how Zell Miller (R-Redneck bunghole) and Saxby Chambliss (R-Peanut fueled racist) travel back and forth to GA? Oh, sorry, they’re regressives and backwards; they travel by mule. That’s why they’re always late for votes.

Joe’s right, about the ’surly’. Check spelling before clicking on “Submit Comment”, and feel free to ding me on my spelling, too. :)
On the other hand, there’s something deeper in the geometry business. As I see it, the left/right distinction is not always useful. The deal here is that FauxSnooze will use any fracking lie and sensationalize anything to sell advertising time or space. If they thought liberals and progressives were as thoroughly uneducated and incapable of analysis as the “conservative” (or ignorant and reactionary) element is, Faux would swing their slanted coverage that way. The other major media outlets seem less crazy than Faux because they like to pretend that they haven’t lost their virginity.
Mind you, I’m not saying that all liberals and progressives are smart, intelligent, and on top of it, nor am I saying that all conservatives are ranting raving witless fools. We’re all human (more or less) and both groups have some share of wisdom and stupidity.
The process, however, that makes some people liberal or progressive does tend to broaden their exposure to the range of ideas and knowledge available to us, while most conservatism is simply the “natural” conservatism of people who haven’t been paying attention, who are somewhat suspicious of anything outside their own experience or what their background taught them. And at the moment, they’re very angry because they see what they thought was a given and their familiar world crumbling. We’ll have to cope with that anger for some time to come (always in fact), but we do need to assure that it does NOT become a well-spring of violence and craziness.
While that violence and craziness is what Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, and various and sundry others seem to be pushing, remember, they’re just in it for Faux or some other media outlet, that is, selling advertising time, or seeking attention for themselves (which is an equivalent to advertising), or both, because they think themselves to be immune to any blowback or backlash.

August 11th, 2009 at 2:44 pmThe Republican party has been taken over by fascists. They are not interested in debate, they are only interested in getting out their own paranoid talking points and not allowing anyone with a different viewpoint to speak. These people are modern day Brown Shirts, encouraged by a political party that now consists of a racist underclass interested only in installing a regime of Christian totalitarianism. The Democratic leadership needs to hold the Republican leadership accountable for this unpatriotic breakdown of order in their party. Americans died in WWII fighting the same brand of fascism in Europe. We can’t allow these people to plunge the United States of America into chaos.

August 11th, 2009 at 3:28 pmThis is not unusual in GA. During the presidential campaign someone went into a north GA community where a lot of minorities live, and placed flyers in every mailbox warning of what would happen to immigrants, LGBT persons, and minorities if Obama became president. There have been numerous racists words and signs written/placed on Jewish and Muslim organizations and schools here. Less than 30 miles away from where I live the KKK had its’ first rally in middle GA in 20 years during the presidential campaign. Plus there are two branches of the League of the South located close by: one in my city and another in a town 20 miles away. Atlanta, Athens, and Macon are very blue, but the rest of the state is blood red.
August 11th, 2009 at 3:36 pmThis is a strange turn in the history of the swastika and vandalism. Now it’s a wild-eyed accusation. Ironically, it loses power for skin-heads and other neo-nazis when used this way. Also, this one is rounded, rather than being straight lines. Strange.
Why is it that people like Jonah Goldberg, with a totally crackpot thesis, manages to be not only insanely influential, but almost immediately hidden in his influence as if the idea that fascism is liberal is common knowledge?
August 11th, 2009 at 3:38 pmI think the curvy swastika is probably because the people that drew it don’t really know much about it. They are fascists, but they have not adopted the swastika as their symbol, because it is so widely hated in America.
American fascist Republicans do not label themselves with swastikas, they label anyone that opposes them with them. They are still displaying the swastika, but they don’t see themselves as fascists.
August 11th, 2009 at 4:32 pmYeppers… we have returned to the hay day of the KKK.
August 11th, 2009 at 4:41 pmThe Weakly Standard says that it’s “likely” the swastika was faked by one of Rep Scott’s supporters.

While here just trying to stir the pot a little bit, try and get a good conversation going like my friend and I have I was called an Idiot countless times and apparently I’m incoherent (but yet they understand enough to comment) also my poor English and typing skills pointed out to me several times.
If only I was as perfect as you all I would be able to see that you guys are all alike the left and the right are the same.Name calling, hate mongering we’re so great they’re so stupid. Yep the same.
The truth of the matter is there is a large group in the middle they’re not right or left but what ever side they lean toward that’s the side that will take office.
In less than two years we vote again and many of those Idiots,Teabaggers, morons, traitors, and what ever else you call them are people in the middle and they might not lean toward the left this time.
I’ve been an U.S. citizen for almost six years now and am proud of it.
My question is why the two party system can’t these men and women stand on their own??

Included an address label. The FBI should be on this guy’s doorstep.

Assuming it’s the real deal, it’s astounding. Address and phone number. All the Capitol Police has to do is send the bigoted doofus a fax telling him the Feds are coming to take him away. He’ll probably leave a trail of crumbs out of his door.
Don’t discount the possibility of a false flag disinformation gambit, though. One document doesn’t prove anything; it’s just an initial point in a trace.
August 12th, 2009 at 1:42 pmMaybe he put the swastika there himself to show his allegiance to the Facism and Socialism the Democrat party now represents? Since the bill has been proven to have language in it to remove a persons choice in health care insurance, I would think all Democrats would be against it, since they are they party of pro-choice. Although, on the other hand, it has also been shown that they are only pro-choice when one chooses as they deem appropriate. Like when a pregnant woman chooses to have a baby she is obviously just a farm for degenerate rednecks, where as a pregnant woman decides to have a hole drilled into her fetus’ head, the brain spun like a scrambled egg and then sucked out with a vacuum tube – the corpse to follow – she is a strong and empowered woman. I get it.
For all of you who are saying the Republicans lost and should get over it, what happened to the importance of listening to the minority that you were preaching when the Republicans were in power?
