Grassley Scaremongers About Government Pulling ‘The Plug On Grandma’

Yesterday, President Obama told a New Hampshire audience that Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) is “sincerely trying to figure out…a health care bill that works.”

But as The Iowa Independent reports today, during a health care meeting with constituents Grassley spouted the latest conservative conspiracy theory about health care reform — that it will put seniors to death:

Americans should be scared of provisions in a health care bill currently in the U.S. House because it will allow the government to have a say in end-of-life decisions, Republican U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley told a crowd of more than 300 Wednesday morning.

“In the House bill, there is counseling for end of life,” Grassley said. “You have every right to fear. You shouldn’t have counseling at the end of life, you should have done that 20 years before. Should not have a government run plan to decide when to pull the plug on grandma.”

ThinkProgress recorded Grassley’s comments on the ground. Watch it:

In endorsing this latest right-wing conspiracy theory, Grassley seperates himself from other GOP senators. Yesterday Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) told an Anchorage crowd that she was “offended” that fellow conservative Sarah Palin wrote that health care legislation will force citizens to stand before “death panels.” And Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA), who has authored legislation calling for government coverage of voluntary end-of-life counseling, called the conspiracy theory “nuts.”

This isn’t the first time Grassley has scare mongered about health care. Last week he told an Iowan radio host that government-run health insurance programs would force people like Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA), who was recently treated for a brain tumor, to die rather than treating them.

Despite all this, Senate Finance Committee Chair Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) has continued to insist that he “couldn’t ask for a better partner” for “meaningful health care reform” than Grassley.

(HT: Washington Independent)

Update Huffington Post's Sam Stein notes that White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs hit back at Palin today for her death panel remark, saying that the former governor had given out "information that I think many of you all pointed out was wrong."
Update Politico's Lisa Lerer reports that "Grassley flagrently refused to denounce rumors for a second time on Wednesday that the House health care bill would allow government to make end of life decisions." "With all the other fears people have and what they do in England then you get the idea that somebody is going to decide grandma lived too long," said Grassley. "You understand why you get it."

I’m tired of this fear-mongering! Just do it already! Pull the plug before any healthcare reform is drafted, let alone debated and voted on.

Better yet, have cameras rolling as someone who has no health insurance passes away from lack of treatment. Or someone who has a treatable illness that, had it been detected and treated early on, would have made a full recovery but didn’t because he/she had no health insurance.

Those are the ads we need to be running.

Is there a way someone can do some investigating of VA Hospitals and severly wounded veterans, and whether there is a policy of not treating them? Such as if a soldier was ever on life support or had late-stage cancer, and the VA stopped treating them?

Yes, you can! I would find it impossible to believe that any VA facility would do such a thing without a living will in place or at the request of family if the patient isn’t able to make his/her own decisions, but you go ahead and do your research and report back.

Such a change from the Bush administration. You only received one if you were a boot licking, ass kissing, brown shirt wearing member/supporter of their illegal administration.

Whew, am I glad we’re done with them. Now, if we only start the investigations.

  15. The Dogfather says:

We need to stop calling what Palin, Grassley, and their ilk are saying “wrong” — that implies that they’ve simply made a mistake in what they say. In fact, they know exactly what they’re saying, and they also know that what they’re saying isn’t true but they’re saying it anyway for the purposes of stirring up the scared, mindless, teabagging lemmings who follow them into the frenzies that we’re now witnessing.

That doesn’t make what they’re saying “wrong” — it makes what they’re saying lies. And so, Palin, Grassley, Boner, Bachmann, Beck, O’Lielly, Dobbs, etc. aren’t merely “wrong” on this issue — they’re liars. Once we all start using the correct terminology here, perhaps we can help get this country back on track and out of the gutter that these nutjobs are steering us all into…

What I don’t understand is this:

We can all agree that if politicians are good at anything, it’s looking out for their own self-interests. So, I’d like to know what the hell politician would propose, support, and defend a plan that would kill off voters? The very idea is so nonsensical, that it’s the kind of thing that I would have to see proof of before I believed it, and even then there would be no guarantees that I would because it’s so damn outrageous. The entire thing is just ridiculous.

  22. misscoleopteramolly says:

Lemme get this straight. If the government offers to pay for a senior citizen’s “end of life wishes” consultation with her doctor, that means the government wants to kill her.

That’s like saying that if an employer offers to pay for a retiring employee’s consultation with a financial planner, that means the employer wants to steal all the employee’s money.

    Makes about as much sense…

I really overestimated Grassley. I should’ve known that he’d revert to demogogouery once he was back in his state. His DC demogogouery is only insane, doesn’t have as much stupid thrown in. That’s my impression, anyway.

The weird thing is that there are so many examples of insurance companies doing this very thing: denying coverage for procedures that would prolong the life of the insured. The difference is that the governmet wouldn’t increase profits by doing so.

  55. chiroptera toasterhead says:

Interesting that Sen. Grassley should be so concerned about “pulling the plug on grandma.” In the 1980s, the C-Streeter was very helpful in “pulling the plug” on thousands of Somalis through his support of “Quranic Marxist” dictator Siad Barre.

    From today’s Democracy Now:

AMY GOODMAN: And Siad Barre of Somalia?

JEFF SHARLET: Yeah, dictator of Somalia. It’s, to me, one of the scariest stories that I found in their archives. I was able to recreate this, because they dumped 600 boxes of papers in the Billy Graham archives. Siad Barre was a—not a likely candidate for Christian right recruitment, called himself a Koranic Marxist. But in the early ’80s, the Soviets had abandoned him. There had been a power shift between Somalia and Ethiopia. He was in the market for a new patron. And working through Senator Chuck Grassley, Republican of Iowa, of course still in office—

AMY GOODMAN: Talk more about Chuck Grassley, who certainly is in the news now, who, together with Max Baucus, heads the Senate Finance Committee.

    JEFF SHARLET: Yeah.

AMY GOODMAN: Baucus, Democrat; Grassley, Republican. Very powerful figure, especially around healthcare right now.

JEFF SHARLET: Indeed. And Grassley has been involved with the organization for quite some time, since the ’80s, when he traveled to Somalia to join Barre, Siad Barre, in prayer to Jesus. And he brought with him a defense contractor named Bill Brehm.

And Barre was a kind of a cynical character, as you might expect for a dictator. He was very clear. He says, “I’m willing to pray to Jesus, and here’s what I want in return.” He says, “I want my defense budget doubled.” He says, “I want meetings for my officials with the Reagan White House. And I want a sort of a hands-off policy while I crack down on some rebels.” Doug Coe, the leader of the group, wrote back, in essence, “Done, done and done.”

And when we look at history, so it was. And Barre used those weapons, supplied to him in part by the US, to wage a war of almost biblical proportion on his own people, from which Somalia has not recovered to this day. The Family doesn’t consider that a failure; they consider that God’s will for Somalia.

  56. smidget says:

    Xisithrus

Apparently it’s just fine and dandy when the government steps in to make your medical decisions for you as long as it is to stop abortion, maintain lifesupport, or prevent assisted suicide.

But it’s certainly not okay when it’s to pay for abortions, pull the plug, or let people decide when and how they want to die, or any other instance for that matter.

In other words – it’s okay if it upholds Republican values. Everyone else can just go to hell, though.

  57. Spencer's mom says:

Hmm, interesting. The Schiavo vote was unanimous in the Senate. All three (3) Republicans present voted for it:

The Sun Sentinel reports that there were three Senators present for the “unanimous” vote: Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-TN ; Senator John Warner, R-VA ; and Senator Mel Martinez, R-FL.

    Frist = gone
    Warner = gone
    Martinez = going

Isn’t that an astonishing statement? It just defies logic. Apparently, if we have failed to have end of life counseling in our 40s, then that means the government wants to murder us? Make about as much sense as Grassley, right?

In addition to your observation that one doesn’t qualify for such Medicare coverage in our 40s, our lives are much different in our 40s than in our 60s, 70s and 80s. Some of us might still be raising children and building our careers, and our health is still very good.

Grassley is just desperate and grasping at anything he can to continue to appeal to the baser elements of the R party.

    Unfcukingbelievable.

  60. Xisithrus says:

    Chuck Grassley then:

That surely was one of the political calculations the Republicans made when deciding to get so involved in the Schiavo case, which was first discussed in the halls of Congress late last year. At a time when G.O.P. leaders in Congress have been unable to gain much traction on issues like abortion and gay rights-which are near and dear to Christian conservatives-this was a no-lose opportunity to burnish their credentials with their most demanding and important supporters. Still, many Republicans reject the notion that anything but deep moral conviction motivated the extraordinary legislative measure. “It’s hard to say it’s politics when you get that kind of consensus in a divided U.S. Senate,” says Republican Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa.

    Chuck Grassley now:

Iowa Republican Senator Charles Grassley says end of life decisions should be strictly between patients, families and doctor—and that many fear some ideas in these bills can lead to the government influencing that decision making.

“That’s unethical as far as I’m concerned,” said Grassley.

    Outlaw284 says:

Hey MORON at least I am not so stupid I misspell stupid. Again there is not ONE bill. There are several different bills you ignoramus. As to the rest of your ignorant post its just the lies the right is telling

    http://mediamatters.org/research/200907290047

House bill does not make end-of-life-counseling mandatory
Advance care planning is not mandatory in the House health care bill. The House health care reform bill provides coverage for counseling as a service through Medicare and is not mandatory. Section 1233 of America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009 amends the Social Security Act to ensure that advance care planning will be covered if a patient requests it from a qualified care provider [America's Affordable Health Choices Act, Sec. 1233]. According to an analysis of the bill produced by the three relevant House committees, the provision “[p]rovides coverage for consultation between enrollees and practitioners to discuss orders for life-sustaining treatment. Instructs CMS to modify ‘Medicare & You’ handbook to incorporate information on end-of-life planning resources and to incorporate measures on advance care planning into the physician’s quality reporting initiative.” [waysandmeans.house.gov, accessed 7/29/09]

Rep. Blumenauer: “Myth: Patients will be forced to have this consultation once every five years.” Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), who co-authored the provision, released a fact sheet on advance planning consultations in the House health care bill that states: “Myth: Patients will be forced to have this consultation once every five years. Fact: Advance planning consultations are not mandatory; this benefit is completely voluntary. The provision merely provides coverage under Medicare to have a conversation once every five years if — and only if — a patient wants to make his or her wishes known to a doctor. If desired, patients may have consultations more frequently if they are chronically ill or if their health status changes.”

You are an ignorant loser. There are more than one bill but at least the ways and means bill does NOT make it mandatory and the every five year BS is just another lie you have been brainwashed with

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/8/11/765224/-Want-To-Debunk-The-Right-Wing-B.S.-On-Health-CareRead-This!

The right-wing conspiracy b.s. is in blockquotes. The debunking is in standard text.

Pg 29 lines 4-16 in the HC Bill – YOUR HEALTH CARE IS RATIONED!!!

The section says you have co-pays and premiums. Just like every other insurance plan. If they have a problem with that, tell them to start advocating for a single-payer plan.

Pg 30 Sec 123 of HC Bill – THERE WILL BE A GOVERNMENT COMMITTEE that decides what treatments/benefits you get

Oh horror upon horrors, the government run health care system is going to be run by…..the government. Just like Medicare and Medicaid. And upon doing some more research, I found that there’s lots of departments that run government programs. For example, did you know that every branch of the military has its own department, and is consolidated into a larger Department of Defense? Did you know that The Post Office is run by a Postmaster General who decides where your mail goes? There’s even a Department of Justice that regulates law enforcement agencies-they decide what crime gets fought you don’t have a choice! There’s even a Food and Drug administration that tells us which foods are safe to eat! We don’t get to decide!

Pg 50 Section 152 in HC Bill – HC will be provided to ALL non-U.S. citizens, illegal or otherwise

Apparently the jokers at Liberty U didn’t find this gem at page 143, section 246:

NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS

    Moving on…

Pg 58 HC Bill – Government will have real-time access to individual’s finances and a National ID Health Care Card will be issued!

That’s right. If you have the public option for insurance, they will give you a card. JUST LIKE EVERY INSURANCE COMPANY IN THE COUNTRY.

Pg 59 HC Bill lines 21-24 Government will have direct access to your banks accounts for electronic funds transfer.

If you read the section, you’ll see that this is shown as a voluntary alternative to paper bill payments. Which makes them every bit as dangerous as EVERY BILL I PAY. I honestly can’t remember the last time I wrote a check to pay a bill. Like everyone else under the age of 80 with an internet connection, I pay my bills online.

Besides, if the government really wanted to take all your cash, the IRS already has the authority to do it. You don’t need public health care to do that.

And, as a veteran, the government already has my bank info, since they’ve been giving me direct deposit payments since I joined the military. And the state has that info since I used online payment to renew my vehicle registration. And I use direct deposit to get my income tax refund.

Pg 65 Sec 164 is a payoff subsidized plan for retirees and their families in unions and community organizations (ACORN).

ACORN isn’t mentioned once in the bill (but the line by line website sure brings them up a lot), and unions aren’t mentioned for another 850 pages or so. This section says that if you get retiree health care, the government will make sure you keep it. Nothing about giveaways to “unions and community organizations”. I don’t even know if ACORN has a retiree health care system.

Pg 72 Lines 8-14 Government is creating a Health Care Exchange to bring private health care plans under government control.

The program has already been created. It’s the private insurance pool that government employees use to get affordable, private insurance. Now everyone will be able to use it. And yes, the government negotiates to keep prices down and make sure you get a good deal. Anybody have a problem with getting low-cost, high quality, private insurance? Didn’t think so. Moving on.

Pg 145 Line 15-17 An employer MUST auto enroll employees into public opt plan. NO CHOICE

Once again, the genius minds at Liberty U can’t tell the difference between the public option and the private insurance pool. Businesses are not going to be required to buy the public option (in fact, I’m pretty sure that’s not allowed). But they are going to have to provide insurance for their employees or face an increase in their taxes. This can also be waived.

Pg 126 Lines 22-25 Employers MUST pay for health care for part-time employees AND their families.

Page 126 doesn’t even have 25 lines, and nothing in that page discusses anything described in the block quote.

Pg 195 Officers & employees of HC Admin (GOVT) will have access to ALL Americans’ financial and personal records.

Page 195 has some stuff on tax records, but that’s it. Nothing on ALL financial and personal records at all.

Pg 203 Line 14-15 HC – “The tax imposed under this section shall not be treated as tax.” Yes, it says that.

That wasn’t the whole sentence. The whole sentence reads:

“The tax imposed under this section shall not be treated as tax imposed by this chapter for purposes of determining the amount of any credit under this chapter or for purposes of section 55.” Yeah, it’s a tax being treated as a different tax than the one described. Liberty U is definetely proving itself to be a bunch of grade A geniuses, that’s for sure!

Pg 239 Line 14-24 HC Bill Government will reduce physician services for Medicaid. Seniors, low income, poor affected.

    .

There’s no talk about cutting funding for Medicaid for anybody in here.

Pg 272 SEC. 1145. Treatment of certain cancer hospitals – Cancer patients – welcome to rationing!

The section says that a study will be done to determine if people can get the same care for cheaper in a regular hospital that they get at a cancer treatment hospital. A report is being done. Big whoop.

Pg 489 Sec 1308 The government will cover Marriage and Family therapy. They will insert government into your marriage.

I didn’t bother reading this section to fact check it. I’ll just say that THE GOVERNMENT IS ALREADY IN YOUR MARRIAGE! IT’S CALLED A MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE!

Lets not encourage WatchPUNKS sexual perversions

Eugene, I’m not interested in encouraging it’s perversions. There’s a fairly high correlation though between abuse of animals in the period before and during adolescense and abuse of domestic partners and children post-adolescense. So, if watchdog is abusing animals, that may be useful to know.

  145. EugeneDebs says:

    Virtual Pebble says:

Of course. Eugene go for laugh no get

  146. Outlaw284 says:

    EugeneDebs
why don’t you try and find a credible sources that knows what they are talking about rather then someone who gives what he thinks it says. Media Matters has been proven wrong so many times it isn’t even funny and the other source you try to use is someone who has no clue.

  147. UCSBKitty says:

OUTLAW, with all due respect, did you read EVERY 500-600 page bill out there?

  148. Outlaw284 says:

    EugeneDebs says:

    ——————————————————————————–

Notice the word for word correlation of Outlaws BS he plagiarized it from the Liberty University and decided we would just LAUGH at him, which he richly deserves, if he sourced it. Outlaw you are a sad joke

Just to help you out here. I didn’t get this from Liberty University I got it all from the http://www.heritage.org/

  149. Outlaw284 says:

    UCSBKitty says:

    ——————————————————————————–

OUTLAW, with all due respect, did you read EVERY 500-600 page bill out there?

No as a matter of fact i am about done with all 1018 pages since that is how long the house bill is

  150. smidget says:

So, Outlaw, is you actually read the bill, how is it that you’ve managed to get it so pathetically wrong? Is your reading comprehension really that bad?

  151. EugeneDebs says:

    Outlaw284 says:

No Outlaw. I know Rush TOLD you to think that but you only show your ignorance by regurgitating it. Media Matters IS a credible source and professional journalists USE it as a source. MMFA backs up their articles with links and sources. You WISH they werent credible because they show what LIARS the screechmonkeys who do your thinking are.

  152. EugeneDebs says:

    Outlaw284 says:

So you got if from HERITAGE and didnt source it for the same reason. I notice they were word for word so I wonder which one cribbed from the other. Still you didnt cite your reference you tried to pass it off as your own. You use Heritage a biased rightwing thinktank then snivel about Media Matters credibility. At any rate the Kos article debunked the idiocy pretty well.

  153. EugeneDebs says:

Why bother to read it when you obviously dont understand it Outlaw? The end of life consultations are NOT mandated every five years and they are NOT mandatory.

  154. Teabagger says:

A telling comment by Tom Coburn R-Oklahoma:

“I offered an amendment in committee to force members of Congress to enroll in the public option. Nine out of eleven Democrats on the health committee who back the public option refused. If the politicians creating the public option don’t have confidence in it, neither should the American people.”

Good enough for constituents. Not good enough for Senators.
The people who make our laws are above many of them.

  155. Virtual Pebble says:

    171. teabagger sez:…

That’s not very interesting. The old “double dare ya” political stunt. Did Coburn offer to go first?

I’d be inclined to wait for the open enrollment period when it’ll clear whether there is a public option or not. The whole point of the public option is to give a choice, not to force a choice, as Mr. Coburn puts it.

Coburn is just another grandstander. Get serious.

  156. Teabagger says:

    Virtual Pebble,

I don’t think you understand. Why on earth would he volunteer for something not as good as what he has?

Why do you consider pointing out the weakness grandstanding?

I will admit that the public option is likely to be relatively better and better as the competition (subsidised by us) weakens the commercial insurers.
It may lead to the failure of companies like BC/BS and then we’d all be in the public option.

  157. noregrets says:

Try to be informed and not so wrong. It wouldn’t hurt for you to do your research.

  158. EugeneDebs says:

Teabagging MORON. They have a LOT of money and alraedy have a very good healthcare system. THAT means NOTHING to the 40+MILLION people without healthcare. You really arent very bright are you. I mean you really fell for that bit of drama queen stupidity? No really you thought it made a point? Man. You should be embarassed

  159. EugeneDebs says:

    Teabagger says:

Its not a weakness you are just stupid enough to fall for the false dichotomy. As if either they use the public option or it shows the option is bad. It just isnt as good as what they already have. It is about like offering REALLY cheap cars that work pretty well but have no frills. The fact that people already driving Jaguars and Cadillacs wouldnt want to trade for them doesnt mean it wouldnt be a GODSEND to those working at McDonalds that otherwise would have to do WITHOUT cars. Is this really to complex for you to understand?
