Member of House GOP leadership criticizes conservatives comparing Democrats to Nazis.

In the past few weeks, influential conservative talkers like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, as well as some activists at town halls, have ratcheted up their radical rhetoric, repeatedly comparing President Obama and Democrats to Nazis. Though Limbaugh’s comments have been denounced by prominent Jewish groups, Republican leaders have been hesitant to criticize the rhetoric. Yesterday, however, Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), a member of the House Republican leadership, came close to criticizing Limbaugh, though she never mentioned him by name. Instead, McMorris Rodgers denounced the comparisons of Democrats to Nazis at town halls:

“I think the purpose of the town halls is for people to be able to express their views in an orderly and respectful manner, and that needs to take place on both sides,” said McMorris Rodgers, the fifth-ranking Republican in the House.

“I certainly don’t condone violence, I don’t condone calling President Obama Hitler and painting swastikas on signs at town halls,” continued McMorris Rodgers, vice chairwoman of the GOP conference.

When you say “I certainly don’t condone violence, I don’t condone calling President Obama Hitler and painting swastikas on signs at town halls,”, you need to add ‘which is why those damn liberals better stop doing it’. I expect to see this addition on this evening’s news.”

  7. CageyCretin says:

More distancing from the hate rhetoric. Are these repugs feeling like the message has gone out and the radical base is sufficiently stirred up? Just a matter of time, now?

These crazy people are “your people”, republicnas. You defend them, you encourage them. If you are REALLY concerned about their behavior and potential behavior, perhaps you should start to make EFFORTS (including spending some of your precious money) to get you crazy base people back into line and acting like civil and responsible citizens of the United States.

A few words saying that you “don’t agree with it” is NOT SUFFICIENT, and neither is that a declarative denouncement of the activity: it is SIMPLY saying that you “don’t agree with it”, which is not close to CONDEMNING it.

Great, you “don’t condone it” — neither do you condemn it.

Republicans: traitors to their country since the Nixon years.

You’re not paying attention. She did not condemn anything — she simply said that SHE does not “condone” this behavior. That is not condemnation. She is simply trying to distance herself from these dangerous radicals for fear that one of them might successfully commit an act of high treason.

Show where she has condemned these people, as opposed to just saying, “I’m not directly involved.”

Or is it just when a Republican says similar things about a Democrat is it condemned?

actually, I have made no comment about condoning, not condoning, nor condemning speech. Nor am I an elected official. Nor am I an elected official in a prominent leadership position in government.

However, words themselves are not an issue — it is words in the context, manner, and forum in which they are used. Civil discourse is always acceptable, even if the language is heated (however, threats do not constitute “heated language” in this context). Debate is fine, but to debate, one must hold an opposing view with counter proposals. Denial is not debate.

I suppose that you don’t think there is anything wrong with signs calling for the death of Obama and his children? Is that something that you consider “free speech” (as long as it isn’t a republican being threatened)?

Dick Cheney blew the cover of CIA NOC and WMD specialist Valerie Plame because her husband Joe Wilson demolished the yellow cake claim Bush used to justify an illegal war.

The Bush administration blew the cover of a British intelligence Al Qaeda mole just to score political points, thus forcing premature arrests, endangering the life of the mole and destroying any chance of further infiltration.

Second, American people have made very clear that they want choice, so ask your representative whether they represent you or the insurance companies, and remind them that you’ll be having that discussion with them again in 2010. Follow-up: the public option will make the insurance companies honest. The problem is the insurance companies are just an extension of what’s been going on on Wall St. They’re in it for profit, not for health care.

The chosen terminology for the Washington Post article about Cheney’s upcoming g*dd*mned f**king lies/memoir is very interesting. From the Think Progress post that so succinctly condenses the WaPo article:

In “informal conversations” with authors, diplomats, policy experts and past colleagues as he prepares his memoir, former Vice President Dick Cheney has “opened a second front” against his “White House partner of eight years, George W. Bush.” Cheney felt “that Bush had gone soft on him” in the second term, one participant said. “Or rather Bush had hardened against Cheney’s advice.”

Hmm. My inner psychologist’s gay-dar is ringing like a dinner bell…It sounds like Little Georgie and Uncle Dick had a rather special sort of relationship. If we can trust these words to be Cheney’s own, it would appear that Dick perhaps thought of himself as the Top Man in a latter-day Spartan mentored sort of war training for his young protege. Those Greeks…

Not that there’s anything wrong with sweaty wrestling before a roaring fire in order to determine whose war policy will win out.

There are unfortunately a paucity of these reasonable people. But if the likes of Beck and Limbaugh continue down this path of demagoguery, we will destroy the two party system in America. The moderates of America are too willing to underestimate the potential for fanatic zealots on the right who have either no understanding of the democratic principles of our government (aside from a twisted comprehension of the second amendment) or who are, like the past administration, simply hell bent on power and believe themselves to be above the law.

I condemned it in 32, Will you?

As far as I can tell, you are not an elected official, either. This is a blog – a forum for personal opinion. This is not a town hall, nor is it even possible for someone to come on this blog and, by shouting and screaming, drown you out. Nor is it possible for anyone on this blog to cause you one iota of violence, no matter how well armed one is at their keyboard.

Now, you compare that to the people we are talking about — people with hate signs showing up in person where the people they are carrying the hate signs about are speaking. Some of those people with the hate signs are showing up armed. Their speech is not simply a matter of “you teabagger” — they are blatant threats of violence.

Your dissosciation with the differences of these instances is your problem. Not mine.

And on a blog, you can say what you will. Why should I believe you? You SAY here that you condemn these violent protestors, but I have no way in the world of affirming or denying the truth of what you say. Neither do you for any poster here.

I say that I like to eat boiled puppy brains. Am I serious or am I pulling your leg? And — prove it.

You are childish, coming here and DEMANDING that other posters appease your ego by posting words that you DEMAND we post for you. Who do you think you are?

You demands also are not on topic. You are altering the topic to try to discuss what posters here have posted or are willing to post. You ignore that fact that your republican leadership has yet to condemn these activities.

Hey, we live in Opposite Land – The True Nazis, Repukes calling Dems Nazis.

They do it just because they are ignorant fools who simply don’t have a clue as to what Nazis are or what fascism is.

  89. NutWrench says:

I was feeling a bit Nazi-ish today and I came up with a “final solution” for these town hall disruptors. Have the cops check everyone’s ID at the door. If you aren’t a town resident and still want to protest, you get transported to a “free speech zone” several blocks from the town hall. Doesn’t that sound nice? Free to shout “fascist” and threaten death to the president to their little hearts content. Of course, nobody gets gassed but that’s what happens when you don’t have qualified Nazi’s running things.

  90. Zooey says:

I wouldn’t trust Cathy McMorris Rodgers as far as I could throw her. She’s the one always standing with Boney and Cantor when they do their news conferences.

She’s taking heat from her constituents, so she has to say something.

  91. joe cantwell says:

    ***

tundra, i got one word for you:

    thorazine.

    **

    º:=)

    take it.

    . … .

  92. conservative guy says:

Like liberals didn’t call Bush a Nazi. Liberals thy name is hyocrite.

  93. EugeneDebs says:

    ConservativePUNK

Thy name is MORON. You are a stupid punkass troll. Ignorant beyond all belief. Why dont you just STFU and let the adults talk you worthless piece of garbage?

  94. miria says:

Thank you, Rep. Rogers for having some sanity about not calling the President of the US Hitler, and the use of swastikas by the protesters. This type of name calling is bringing out the crazies, the angry people, and could lead to violence. I abhor violence.
